External Harddrive doesn't show in Finder

Finder won't show my hard drive. It's never been a problem before, but now it won't show at all. Disk utility shows it is connected. What has happenned, and how do i fix it?
Thanks,
Vincenso

Is it connected via USB or Firewire?

  • External HDD doesn't show on finder.

    Hello community!
My friends MacBook Air is not recognizing the HDD.
The HDD works through USB and used to work on her's iMac.
Tried to go to the disk utility and the disk doesn't show up there, neither on finder.
    Regrards,
    Rui

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Since updating my Mac to 10.8.4 any external hard disk doesn't show on Finder sidebar (but shows on desktop). Anyone else have the same problem?

Since updating my Mac to 10.8.4 any external hard disk doesn't show on Finder sidebar (but shows on desktop). Anyone else have the same problem?
It's annoying because now I can't use Finder sidebar for drag and drop to thumb drive etc.
Thanks for your thoughts and help!

    Hi Barney-15E,
Thanks for your reply and suggestions!
It is set to show on the sidebar in Finder prefs and I tried toggling the setting multiple times but it didn't fix anything.
I went into Preferences (I'm Administrator) but the strange thing is I don't see com.apple.sidebarlists.plist anywhere in the folder. Not sure what that means..

  • External Hard Drive not showing in finder

    Hi,
I have done an unsafe eject two weeks ago of my external hd. When I try to connect the hd again it doesn't show in finder. I've tried the disk utility but that doesn't work. Are there any other ways to get the hd working again?

I had this problem a few days ago…
I solved using the following steps:
    1) Disconnect the external HD from everything, including power.
    2) Shut down the Mac.
    3) Reboot the Mac from the Installer disc.
    4) Run Disc Utility, first "Repair Disc" then "Repair Permissions" on the internal HD (which actually threw up a total of 4 errors).
    5) Restart the Mac from the internal HD.
    6) Reconnect the external HD.
At this point, mine connected perfectly and enabled me to run Time Machine.
However, the next step would have been:
    7) Run Disc Utility from the internal HD, use it to mount the external, and then do Repair Disc.
If that fails, then as Kappy says, a reformat of the external is the only remaining option.
    Good luck

  • PhotoShop external editor doesn't show up in Preset file application support. It is listed as the top external editor. But will not go there

PhotoShop external editor doesn't show up in Preset photoShop file application support. It is listed as the top editor in the Light room preference. But it will not go there. You can use export to Photoshop CC but not as a editor. It stays there. I have OS10.8 and Photoshop CC not Photoshop CC2014 at this time. If I go to presets in Lightroom preferences and push restore export presets
do I also lose my plugin presets and have to reload them ?

Glad you were able to resolve your issue. Thanks for posting back with how you did it.

  • My external drive mounts but doesn't show in Finder anymore?

I was accessing my iMac external backup drive over the network from my laptop and it suddenly greyed out.  Going to my iMac I discoverd that the drive was mounted according to Disk Utility and my backup utility could find it but it doesn't show on my desktop or the sidebar of the Finder window.  I can access it thru the Go to Folder menu item.  I can then drag items to it but can't save items to it directly since it doesn't show up in Finder. I have checked Finder preferences, restarted the iMac, dismounted (in Disk Utility) and remounted it.  I've also eliminated it in Sharing system preferences.  No luck on all counts.  I connected it to the laptop and it behaves the same way.  Doing a Google search turned up the possiblity that it has become "invisible" but I'm confused as to how to change this attribute.  I'm hoping there is a simple Terminal command I can use.
    Looking for some help here!

Yes I did Eric.  Then just found the answer.  Volume became hidden and I used a Terminal command.
Thank you for reading my question and suggesting a solution!

  • Toshiba harddrive doesn't show up on macbook pro but shows up on macmini

1 tb toshiba harddrive won't show up on macbook pro.  Other external harddrives have showed up on Macbook pro.
The toshiba does show up on my mac mini.
I checked in Disk Utility to see if it showed up there in the macbook pro and it did not.
    macbook pro - maverick
    mac mini has 10.8.5
Does anyone have a clue? Thanks for any tips.

I had this same problem with an external seagate drive I was using as a time machine backup for my iMac. When I installed/updated OS 10.9 on the iMac, the seagate drive would not show up on the iMac.
The seagate drive shows up on my MBP/r even after updating the MBP/r to OS10.9
I just checked again to make sure this info is accurate, it is accurate.
The seagate drive still doesn't show up on the iMac but does show on the MBP/r.
The seagate drive does not show in disk utilities on the iMac but does show on the MBP/r.
I finally bought another external HD for my back-ups, I needed that drive!
BTW, I did not buy another seagate.
I have a couple toshiba external drives and, so far, they are working ok, on both my computers.
    I don't get it either.

  • Now External Firewire doesn't show on desktop...even on another computer.

This is a continuation of the problem of the disappearing internal hard drives topic but it's taken on a whole new dimension. I have restored two of the three internal volumes affected and they show up. So I thought maybe now I can use the command-, option on the finder to make the third volume appear. Under "show these items on desktop" I checked the box next to "hard disks" off and then back on. I didn't touch the box next to "external drives" but the EXTERNAL firewire drive disappeared from the desktop. Two of the three internal volumes still showed on desktop. The external firewire shows in Disk Utility but nowhere else. I disconnected the firewire drive and connected it to a laptop. It doesn't show on the desktop there either, but it does show in disk utility. Obviously my computer must be doing something to the drives to make them not appear no matter where they're connected. I'm desperate now.

Did you try mounting it in Disk Utility?

  • External hard drive not showing in finder or disk utility

1TB WD external hard drive is not showing in finder sidebar, destop, or disk utility. I have checked and all the preferences are ticked. The disk itself is showing a light and making a whirring sound during start up after being plugged into the power.

Three different external drives, on 2 different MacBook Pros (different ages).  One drive with internal power, 2 through USB.  Also have a new Solid State External Drive and it does work.  The were all working before upgrade to Yosemite.
    Have tried multiple USB Cords

  • External firewire doesn't show

I'm having trouble seeing an external firewire drive on the desktop.
I've tried restarting with it on and then off, and turning it on after the boot is complete.
I've reset the PRAM, still without success.
The drive has a USB port which I tried, but when I connect via USB it still doesn't show up.
If I leave the drive on whille connected via USB the computer does not boot, the screen remains a blank white.
Outside of trying another firewire cable, are there any suggestions available that I can try?
    Thank you.

a brody, thanks for your reply.
I tried safe mode, still didn't show up.
The drive doen't have any backup software, I use Carbon Copy Cloner.
The drive has worked well since 2007.
I tried booting from a drive other then the maind drive, holding the option key down on start up.
The only drive to show on the desktop was the main drive, the external didn't show.
Problem began a couple of weeks ago.
If the drive doesn't show either via firewire or USB, do you think the dirve is just bad, and a new drive is the way to go?

  • Saving a file with Dreamweaver it doesn't show up finder view of folder

Since I updated Mac Leopard it seems that when saving a file with Dreamweaver 8 it shows up in the files list but it doesn't show up in the finder when I look at the same folder.
But if I save to the desktop the file is visible and if I save to another folder it's visible. Any ideas why?

    Hi harvey waxman;
It was my understanding that anything prior to DW CS3, which is version 9, is not compatible with Leopard.

  • External drive doesn't show up.

I have a LaCie mini hub external drive that I use as a backup drive for my Mac Mini. Well, the drive in the Mini died. I took the LaCie to the Apple store with the Mini and they confirmed that the external drive was working OK, by either USB or Firewire. They kept the Mini for warranty repair and I'm still waiting for it to return.
I get home and attach the LaCie drive to my ibook, but the ibook doesn't see it. It doesn't show up with system profiler, so I can't even try running Disk Utilities on it. The hub function of the LaCie seems to work OK, but that's probably not surprising, and has little to do with the hard disk inside it.
The Mini is a intel duo core running OS X 10.4.8
    The ibook is a G4 running OS X 10.3.9
The LaCie is 250 GB, formatted using HFS+, according to the manual.
Mostly I just want to reassure myself that the backup is intact on the LaCie drive. Any thoughts?

You might have a look at the demo version of iPartition.
    http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php
The demo won't write any changes, so hopefully it is a safe way to confirm that you still can access your drive -- though it won't actually let you get the contents, since it is a partitioning utility.
(If it were me, I'd leave well enough alone until your fixed Mini returns.)
