External HardDrive/Hub combo on iMac 800MHz

I'm thinking of getting an external Hard drive/Hub combo in the hopes that it will allow me to use my 800MHz iMac with peripherals that require USB 2.0. Is this the way to upgrade to usb 2.0 and/or Firewire 800 on this vintage of Mac?

Hi Martin,
When you connect a "Ministack" type hard disk with Firewire and USB hubs there is no cross-over in the technologies. You must connect the USB hub to a free USB port on your iMac and the Firewire Hub to a free Firewire port on the iMac. As such the USB2.0 (480Mbps)ports on the hub are limited to the single USB1.1 (12Mbps) port that you connect to on the iMac. USB relies on the iMac's processor for a lot of it's processing whereas Firewire does not. This is why you'll variation in performance, but Firewire is nearly always better.
I'm sure Ian will agree with me (we've move just moved from iMac G4s to Alu Intel iMacs) that there is absolutely no user learning curve to the move to Intel. The OS is identical. no path names are different. Admittedly some software needs updating but most 'just works'. Because Mac OS transfers everything across a new iMac can be made to be identical to an old iMac in a couple of hours (the Mac working not you!). That said I did get a phone call from my wife whilst I was at work today; she couldn't find where to put her CD-ROM in the new iMac. I struggled to contain my mirth in front of my colleagues and am sure I'll be reprimanded for it later.

I agree with your neighbor. A good source is OWC. You want a 3.5" SATA I or SATA II (1.5 or 3.0 Gb/s) hard drive. The enclosure should have a power supply and support at least Firewire 400/800 and USB 2.0. OWC even has tools. Good drives to choose from include Seagate, HGST, and Western Digital (stay away from their Blue drives.) Avoid so-called Green drives.

Transfer files from External Harddrive to new iMac

Had old powerbook, saved all data onto External Harddrive. Purchased new iMac and need to transfer Address Book and iCal information from ex. harddrive to iMac. I can't seem to figure it out. Can anyone help?

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

Generic USB hub doesn't allow iMac to recognize external harddrive and iPhone.

I have an iMac (few years old) and placed a generic USB hub on one of the ports. My iMac doesn't recognize my external harddrive or iPhone cradle, unless I connect them directly to the back of the iMac. Are there hubs that work better?

How do i copy files and folders from one external harddrive to another on the iMac?

For some reason when i drag the folder or file that i want to transfer or copy from one external harddrive to another, nothing happens when i drop it on the destination folder or drive. however, when i drag and drop to the desktop or any location on the Imac internal hardrive it works without any issue. The only problem is that i dont want to transfer or copy stuff to the computer. i want to copy it to an external harddrive. please help if your have answers to my question.

Check the formatting of the external hard drive. To do that, right click on the drive icon and select Get Info. (Or click once on the drive and type command +i ) The pane includes information about the drive format.
The drive should be formatted as Mac OS Extended. If it is not, run Disk Utility (App;ications / Utilities) and format the drive.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

External Harddrive won't work on iMac

I have an external harddrive that I previously used on my PC. It only has generic JPG files saved to it. When I plug it in to my iMac it is read only and will not allow me to save things to the disk. In the information menu it shows that it is read only and I cannot modify the files or create new folders.
What do I have to do to make this work? Is there any initialize process or something?

The safest thing to do would be to get a new external drive. Look up the reviews via Google on the external drive before buying. Best to get a drive that is Mac friendly.
You could try this driver:

Problem accessing Seagate External Harddrive from iMac and Mac Book Air

I have a brand new Seagate 2TB external harddrive which I have just used to backup my entire iMac files (photos, videos, etc) via the Time Capsule programme. However I now can't access the files which apparently have been copied onto the Segate. I have now connected the Seagate to my Mac Book Air and it is not even being recognised as an external storage device.
Is someone able to tell me how I can access the files on the external drive?

do you mean "time machine" as opposed to "time capsule" the latter is a back up drive in itself.
before you did your backup was your seagate drive formatted or did you just connect and instruct the mac to back up to the drive.
if the drive was not formatted then you will need to format the drive using disc utility.

Quiting iTunes first if it's running
Connecting your external harddrive to your Mac, use the Finder to browse to it
Find your iTunes folder on the ext HDD and double-click on iTunes Library.itl

I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

If you don't remember your restrictions passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it using iTunes. Do NOT restore your backup. The restrictions passcode is part of the backup.
Everything on the phone will be lost.
You can extract the photos from the camera roll the same way you would from any other digital camera. Having a restriction passcode set should not prevent that. do that before you put the phone in recovery mode and restore it.

Hey Guys, i currently have time machine backing up everything on my 2011 imac to an external harddrive, which is working fine! No problems there.
As a photographer, i currently have two seperate harddrives. Harddrive (A) - All projects/files, & Harddrive (B) - Backup of Harddrive (A) with all projects/files.
What i'm wanting is for time machine to continue backing up my i mac as usual to the external harddrive, whilst also backing up the contents of Harddrive (A) to Harddrive (B) at the same time without backing up everything on my imac
Is this possible to do??

Sorry Leslie but time machine cant do what you are asking for, however there are free apps like backuplist+ that can sync Harddrive to Harddrive, the app can be found here

Can somebody please please help me! External harddrive not readable due to dumb mistake!

What is quite possibly one of the dumbest decisions i ever made in my life, I disconnected my external harddrive from my imac & plugged it into a laptop that has Windows 7 to trasfer footage from there to my imac more quicker. I clciked an option that allowed me to assign a letter to it to it can be read by the laptop (however, I would of needed to format the harddrive which I thankfully didn't). Please understand that erasing the entire harddrive is NOT an option! I am a filmmaker & I have so many years of work on there, including videos, music, & documents.
When the computer starts up I get hit with "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"! I tried Disk Utiity & even though it recognizes the drive's existence, I cannot repair or mount...nor can I access any of the files! I also tried Diskwarrior & got "directory cannot be rebuilt, the file system is unsupported".
If theres anything you guys can do to help me, please do so. My life was on that harddrive & losing it would be the most devistating thing I could ever experience. A movie I finished not too long ago...is also on that harddrive. I'll send you a full video completely thanking you for your help!
