External Harddrive no longer recognized

Hey all.
Ok, so I have a 15" MBP and I bought a 1 TB external HD firewire 800 because I needed stuff for my video editing. Everything worked perfectly, I would unplug it and plug it in all the time (properly and improperly). Well I recently moved and it won't be recognized by the laptop anymore. It is plugged in and on and everything works fine. When I plug it in, the harddrive makes noises and then nothing happens. It does NOT appear in disk utility either. There is a switch on the harddrive to make it so whenever the harddrive is plugged into something, it turns on. When I plug it into the laptop it still turns on yet the laptop does not recognize it.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
A couple of possibilities are a bad FW cable, a failed FW chip in the external drive, and your FW 800 port not working.
Do other FW peripherals work? If not try a SMC Reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
If so, try another FW cable. If the drive has USB capability, see if DU sees it with a USB cable.
If the Mac can see the drive with USB, but not with FW, you might be able to put the drive in a different enclosure and have FW capability again. Look for an enclosure with an Oxford 924+ chipset.
Good luck!

Hi, I am experiencing a problem with my external WD eSATA harddisk. The setop box was recognizing it perfectly and I was recording programs with no problem. Suddenly the DVR does not show the drive any longer. I tried unplugging and rebooting. Did not fix the issue. I need help: what should I do???

I had the exact same thing happen and you aren't going to like the answer/solution. One day my eSATA just disappeared, the DVR no longer recognized it. I unplugged, rebooted, reset, reconnectedetc. etc. and nothing. So I thought it was a DVR issue , after working with Verizon Customer Care Verizon sent me another 7232. I connected the eSATA to the new 7232, alas still nothing, it was not recognized. Turns out it was not a DVR/FiOS issue, the eSATA went bad (after 12 stinking days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Western Digital eSATA's are junk. I contacted Western Digital and they sent me a new eSATA (if it is still under warranty they will replace it for free BUT you have to pay all shipping costs), I connected that and it works just fine (but I am holding my breath, it has been 11 days since I connect the new one).
If the eSATA is bad you need to contact that Western Digitial, NOT Verizon. If it is bad it is not a Verizon problem.
And the Verizon In Home Agent is pretty much useless, that did nothing except waste a lot of my time.

  • 2 TB External Drive no Longer Recognized by iMac 27"

I have a 2 TB external HD (actually two 1 TB drives housed together in a OQC Mercury Elite Case) that has been working flawlessly for about 10 months as my Time Machine backup to the iMac 27". I have it hooked via FW800.
Yesterday I noticed that TM backup failed and when playing around, I also noticed that the drive was no longer recognized. I check System Profiler and the drive was not seen. I did a PRAM reset (as this usually fixed the FW800 issues), but still no drive.
Thinking I had a faulty FW800 port on the iMac, I switched the connection to USB 2. I see the Drive listed in the USB Device Tree in System Profiler, but still nothing on Finder.
I opened Disk Utliltiy and I see a listing for a "2 TB External Raid Media" and then as a indent is says "Disk 3s3", but this is grayed out and you can not click on it to, say, repair permissions.
I installed an update late Friday night and I have no idea if this is the reason, but I am curious what the next step might be. I am using 10.6.4.

    James,
There are some basics you can do to do trouble shoot the FW800 problem. First is doing a SMC reset, follow the instructions for Intel based iMacs. This letter covers multiple models of Macs and you need to follow the correct procedure.
The next item to try would be resetting the PRAM.
Finally The X Lab has written a good article on troubleshooting Firewire devices. You can locate that article here.
    Hope this helps out some.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • External iSight no longer recognized, built-in iSight works - how to fix?

I have a new MacBook Pro with Leopard and both the built-in iSight and my external iSight were recognized and I could switch between them. This past week or so my external iSight became no longer recognized even after unplugging and re-plugging in. When I plug it into the Firewire port, the green light goes on and it makes a whirring sound, but my computer does not recognize it in iChat, in PhotoBooth, nor in iMovie. I repaired permissions and it still doesn't get recognized in any applications. Is there a setting someplace that needs resetting? Or do I need to bring it into the Apple store for technical help?
    Richard

    Hello Richard
I wonder how many others have this problem?
A search or look through iSight Discussions will show you that a few of the many users of external iSight have reported problems using their Firewire iSights with MacBook Pro. I will leave it to you to try to determine whether that might be because few external iSight users have problems, few have MacBook Pros, or few use their external iSights with their MacBook Pros.
I agree that the system should allow both to co-exist.
Any other suggestions before I go to the Apple Genius folks?
If you have already considered all the suggestions about cables, connections, Firewire ports, possible conflicts, and the relevant suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight without success, you can also try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • LaCie External Drive No Longer Recognized

My LaCie d2 Hard Drive (Extreme) suddenly is no longer recognized. This may or may not have anything to do with my copying several files to it just prior, with much memory still available on it. I rebooted my computer twice and it was still not there. Is this a crash? Should I kiss that drive goodbye? If not, any suggestions?

Bizarre. After some time it now appears, and apparently with all files on it. I thought the cable was already secure on both ends, but perhaps it appeared after tightening them just slightly. Do you think that was it?

  • External USB harddrive no longer recognized/accepted

    Hi,
Since updating to Mac OS X 10.5.9 my Mac doesn't recognize/accept one of my external USB harddrives--both are Western Digital ones, which I'm using successfully for more than one year now--, and upgrading to Snow Leopard didn't resolve this issue (see console output at the end).
Changing USB ports--hub, directly on my Mac--is to no avail either.

    Hi,
Well, at least momentarily this issue seems to be resolved, although I quite can't grasp all of it.
I've unplugged the external drive in question, both from the USB hub, as well as from the power jack, waited now for two days, until just a couple of minutes reconnecting everything again, starting with the power supply, and after some seconds the USB followed.
Et voilá the drive is being recognized and mounted again.
Weird, really weird, as I haven't got the slightes clue whatever, when this will arise the next time!

  • External Drive No Longer Recognized

I have a DiskGo Edge 500GB external hard drive that will no longer mount on my computer. It was dropped from about two feet, and no longer pops up on my desktop. Originally, when I launched Disk Utility, it would appear on the sidebar, but after about five minutes it failed to show up. I booted into a Leopard Install DVD and ran Disk Utility form there, and it appeared there, but still would not show up when logged in. Running the Data Rescue 3 program was no help, as it didn't even appear as a drive to repair.
The drive still emits a soft hum when connected, and there are no visible signs of wear. Any ideas?

All of a sudden it is now being recognized by Disk Utility again. However, if I click on it, I just get the rainbow wheel.
Terminal displays it through diskutil list, and this is the information when I type diskutil info /dev/disk2:

  • External HD no longer recognized...

I was told that my previous post was posted in the wrong forum, so hopefully this is the right place to post it.
I've been using an external HD for the past few months, and so far it has been working great. But now, whenever I turn it on, it isn't detected my Mac. Please help me, as there are many important files that I need to retrieve from it.
If this information helps at all, the external HD is a 500GB LaCie Big Disk Hi-Speed USB 2.0. I noticed that whenever I turn it on, it makes a clicking sound. Any suggestions?
    -M.R.P.

As USB HDD:s get older these things happen. What you can do is "force" your mb to recognize the USb HDD. Try launching the app "USB prober" it should be native in your OS X if not, find on your original DVD.
When you start that APP it seems to get MB:s to access USb hdd.
If it doesnt work try restarting the USB HDD. If that doesnt work retart both MB and YSb HDD If this doesnt work buy a new external HDD. go for a brand name and keep it still and cool always.

  • External devices no longer recognized

I have a Powerbook G4 that just recently started having issues with the external drives. Nothing put into the USB ports or CD/DVD drive show up on the desktop. Can anyone help me with this problem. I've already made sure they were checked as showing up under the Finder preferences.

Look for updated drivers for the devices on the manufacturer's website. This is a common problem after a major system upgrade although many devices still plug & play well. Although I didn't have the problems you're having I have had several driver updates to provide proper stability for my devices after upgrading to Leopard. Of course Apple secure upgraded drivers from many 3rd-party suppliers when they release a system update - but not from all.

  • External Harddrive no longer showing up

so my old hard drive (external) has been playing up for a while, i daisy chained it to another and to my imac and tried to transfer everything so i can wipe it and reformat it. i transferred most things but now it just won't show up on my mac...
I'm using firewire, and it just won't show up no matter what i do, so even if i've lost everything i can't reformat...
    any tips?
Message was edited by: Time Machine now won't back up

Based on what you have done, I think you have eliminated as causes:
    Software (the system or settings)
The iMac's FireWire port (try the other port if you have not already)
    The FireWire cable
So the only remaining possibilities are:
    The hard drive itself
The external drive enclosure (if the case has two FireWire ports, be sure to try both)
You can test the hard drive apart from the case by removing it from the case and putting it in another case that uses the same type of drive.
Is this an iMac G4? If so, does it have USB 2.0 ports or is it the earlier model with USB 1.1?
Also, is this external hard drive (the one with the problem) the type that has its own power supply, or is it the pocket type that gets power from the FireWire connection?
One more question: If you run Disk Utility with the hard drive connected directly to the iMac's port, does it appear in the sidebar?

  • Firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized

After last system update, my firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized. Any solutions?
Why does MacOS go backwards... gets worse over time?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours may be the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

  • After security patch 03/04/2014 OSX 10.7.5, first one, then a second, external backup drive no longer recognized.  Diagnostics for the FireWire one displays brand name of unit, but Time Machine and its own app don't see it.  Where do I start?

Yesterday I installed the security patch, OSX 10.7.5 to my IMac that is about 2 years old.
Today my Seagate BackupPlus for Mac will power on but is not recognized.  It does not show up as a device, Time Machine says the latest backup was DELAYED, last successful at 03/04/2014 9:35 PM (yesterday) and next backup would begin when the disk was connected.  An error message I did not save said basically the drive was not recognized.   I did all drive's  troubleshooting steps, including installing a newer version of their app.  I tried swapping USB for FireWire, changing electrical outlets, etc.
It seems a bit coincidental to have 2 drives "fail" simultaneously.  Is anyone else having this issue after this security patch?  What would be the approach from the Mac side?  TIA for any assistance.
Please see below regarding the second drive.  Is this a red herring, or does it help pinpoint where the failure might lie?
I also have a Seagate GoFlex that WAS recognized until I did the troubleshooting on the other drive.  When I put it back on after testing the other drive with FireWire, it now is no longer recognized.
    Diagnostics says this about that:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
    GoFlex Mac:
      Manufacturer:          Seagate
      Model:          0x6090
      GUID:          0x2037600121908F
Maximum Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed:          Up to 800 Mb/sec
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac Unit:
      Unit Software Version:          0x10483
      Unit Spec ID:          0x609E
      Firmware Revision:          0x111
      Sub-units:
    GoFlex Mac SBP-LUN:
Thirdly, in after one of the testing/reboot loops, the HP WiFi printer was no longer recognized, but after a few more it came back.

    I have a similar problem.
Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?

  • External harddrive in network not recognized by windows XP

    Hi,
I have an external harddrive (Iomega), FAT partioned, that windows, via bootcamp, will recognize. When I connect the ext. harddrive to my apple extreme, it is recognized by Apple but not by Windows XP SP2.

  • EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE NO LONGER RECOGNIZED, DOES NOT MOUNT

Hello everyone, this is not necessarily a mac mini issue
last night was working on my mac mini (intel 2007), it froze up, couldnt even restart, so i held the power button (hard reset i guess)
it came back on but then would NOT recognize my external HD, (which is an iomega mini max 1TB)
perhaps this was considered by my mac as "not ejecting or putting the disc away properly "
i did a ton of research (here and elsewhere)..found various hints/fixes but nothing works so far
i tried using different cables, firewire, usb..ran hardware test...zapped the pram....tried it on my ibook (which also does not recognize it)...turned the hd off and on...
i unplugged everything, power to mac, all cables.. left overnight...tried again with no luck
    restarted, powered down...nothing
tried finding the the external hd partitions in "/Volumes" to trash. there was ONE of the partitions there, which i trashed - no luck (i had 3 partitions on the external hd)
was going to swap the hd to another enclosure, but the mini max hd wont fit it/work
    disk utility doesnt see it
i tried a few things with terminal - nothing
i am unable to open firmware (via commandoption+OF, as this is an intel)
it doesnt seem to be a problem with the firewire port, as that port recognized my video camera
im pretty sure the HD and my data is fine, its just that my mac doesnt recognize it. its like its already "on" or "mounted"
it cant find the path or map or something like that
in system profiler it comes up as:
    "Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
any ideas? why would force shutting down (by holding the power button) cause my mac to no longer recognize the external HD?
i have NOT tried "discwarrior" or norton. trying to avoid having to pay $100 and i read that others with this problem bought discwarrior, which didnt see it or help
i did try something called "total recall" by virtualab - it did NOT see the external HD
and as i mentioned above, disk utility does not recognize it
ok please let me know, i could really use some help here
i do usually backup to dvd's but not everything..also did a ton of work recently that was NOT backed up
hope to hear from you soon!!!
    thanks in advance, andrew

hello, i dont have a UPS but have it connected to a power strip
    what might this mean?
btw - when this first happened (3 days ago) i used disk utility/first aid to examine my mini, it PASSED
yesterday i thought what the heck, ill run first aid again
and this is what i got:
    verifying volume "mac mini"
    checking HFS plus volume
    checking extents overflow file
    checking catalog file
incorrect block count for file AbletonTmp-0001
(it should be 1 instead of 0)
    1%)
    checking multi-linked files
    checking catalog hierarchy
    checking extended attributes file
    checking volume bitmap
    checking volume bitmap
    or repair",0)
    checking volume information
    volume header needs minor repair
the volume mac mini needs to be repaired
error: the underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume needs repair
it wasnt able to fix it while booting/running off the mini so
i then ran disk utility on the OSX install disc and was able to fix that problem
but alas, no luck with the external HD, still not recognized
the AbletonTmp-0001 makes sense because that was one of the programs i was running when it crashed
i was hopeful that fixing that problem would help.
ive been through quite a few crashes and restarts like that, i wonder why this time it caused such a serious problem
i would imagine there are a ton of people who have to force a restart or dont eject the HD, or unplug it, etc
i wonder why there isnt an easier/better way for a mac to deal with an external hd/flash etc. are pc's as sensitive with ex hd's?
ive had to tell new mac owners again and again -"no! you have to eject it first!"
ok well thanks in advance for any further advice/help
it means a lot to me, so thank you!!
    -andrew
