External harddrive suggestion to boost my computer...

Hello,
I'm stuck at a standstill with my project because I'm all out of memory. I'm dealing with 32 hours of footage. I tend to put most of it on the computer before trimming it down, just to see what I'm working with. I still have roughly 20 hours of footage to sort through.
A friend recommended I get a Terrabyte external drive. Yes? No? Models/brand suggestions? I'm working on a new MacPro.

Unless you need RAID for speed (or backup: mirrors, Raid 5, etc.), I'd go with internal; you can get up to 1.5TB drives from Seagate at MacSales.com for about $160. I've used them (at least the ATA bare drives) and they work fine for me.
For external (not raid: for that, Caldigit is the right answer), I usually get Mercury Elite Pro drives with Quad interfaces (future proof: USB 2, FW800, FW400, eSata) and use FW800. Again, 1.5TB for $260.
I've bee using internal Sata drives on my G5 Quad and external FW800 for ProRes 422 (1440x1080p30) and up to three streams of multi-clip without incident; but that's pushing it and I suspect that for real ProRes multistream use, a Raid of some sort is needed (see CalDigit).

  • Portable External Harddrive Suggestion

I travel a lot and need to constantly transfer my files to a Portable External Hard drive that I can travel with. I just purchased a small (320 gb) hp-SimpleSave and for some reason I can not "drag and drop" my files on to this device. Unfortunately I did not read the configuration requirements before I purchased it, and well of course it specifies: Windows XP, Vista, or 7, nothing about OS. But I always thought most devices that connect through USB can connect to a Mac, but I guess I am wrong. Can anyone suggest a nice SMALL and robust external hard drive I can travel with?
    Thanks

I second the suggestion for OWC as a source of drives. I also would recommend OWC's Mercury on the Go FireWire 800 enclosures. They have the highly reliable Oxford chip sets, and you can choose whatever bare drive you want and put it in the enclosure. I travel a lot too, and I have 3 of these. The drive and the cable fit nicely into Case Logic's hard drive cases, which you can occasionally find on half price sale.
Many bare drives come formatted for Windows, but you should be able to use Disk Utility to format them for Macs. Here is a link that may be helpful:

Open Time Machine to the date that you know the iPhoto Library is in the format you want and select and Restore it.

  • My itunes library is stored on an external harddrive which i dont have on me at the moment, i would like to add songs from my computer to my ipod touch, can i do this without losing the songs already on there?

I store all y music on an external harddrive and update my ipod from that normally. However at the moment I dont have it but would like to put songs that i have added to my itunes and are stored on my computer onto my ipod touch. Is there a way to just add songs to the ipod touch without losing all the rest of the songs on there?

You should be able to to it by using manual syncing method. See that method here:

  • How do I transfer images from external harddrive with Bridge settings to new computer?

I used to use Adobe Bridge on a computer that stopped working. My computer tech then made the harddrive out of that computer to an external harddrive. Now I want to transfer all those images with all the settings I have a applied to them, to my new computer. My new computer is a PC with Windows 7 and I run Adobe Creative Cloud on it.

Thanks for your answer. Where is the xmp file located?
That depends on your preference settings. By default Bridge is set to store metadata as a sidecar XMP file. This is the file that has the same filename as its original but it only uses the ".xmp" extension instead of the Raw file extension.
Bridge stores this file in the same folder as the original. If you use Bridge to move files to other location it automatically selects the xmp files to travel with it.
If you use the menu view / show hidden files you will see what Curt meant by XMP being hidden files, the all have a document icon.
If you have converted the RAW to DNG this data is written in the file itself as is the case with other filetypes like jpeg and tiff that can be handled by ACR.
You should be able to copy the whole folder to your new system or point Bridge to the old disk, select the files you want in the content panel and use the folder panel to navigate to the new location and use drag and drop
    Plenty of options

You can't view your photos in the iPhoto library in Time Machine vis the Finder.  You must enter Time Machine, go back in time to the library you want to restore and restore it?
One can only restore an entire library from TM:

  • Can someone help with moving iTunes & iPhoto from a external harddrive to my new computer?

I got my new computer 3 days ago. I'm loving it so far. My question is...I have an external harddrive that I was using as my backup for my old computer. It was running OS X 10.4 My new computer is 10.8.2. I have no idea how to get the info for iTunes or iPhoto off of my external drive. I've never had to do that before so I'm a little lost.
    Thank you for your time.

Migrating from an older Mac OS to a newer one is usually smooth (not vice-versa, there may be problems). Depending on the app used for backup, you may use it in the reverse order (you used to to backup, it must have a restore function).
Alternatively, you may simply copy the iTunes and iPhoto folders into ~/Users/logged in user/Library/Music and ..../Pictures, respectively.
You may also continue to use the folders on the external drive by pressing Option/Alt key upon starting iPhoto and iTunes. You can do that any time you wish to keep these folders in another location than the default one. See screenshots below.
If not clear, please come back with details.

  • External Firewire Harddrive Suggestions

I have a new macbook pro and want to use an external harddrive through the 800 port for recording and loading samples. Probably a 1 or 1.5 TB size.
Can I get some suggestions of what firewire harddrive brands seem to be most compatible with the macbook pros?
    thanks!

Try OWC. Or you can DIY:
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
    Buy.Com
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • My computer ignores my external harddrive

alright, so i accidentally started to unstuff a .sit file onto my external harddrive and my computer froze, so i had to restart my computer. When it rebooted it said that there was an error with my hard drive and asked me what i wanted to do. I chose ignore, not knowing that it would ignore it forever. Is there any way to get my computer to quit ignoring it, and recognize when i have the hard drive plugged in. The hard drive is a maxtor one touch usb 2.0.

I can't do that because the hard drive won't mount, so it won't even show up in disk utility. I did an experiment and plugged in the HD to a pc and the pc recognized it, but i couldn't open it unless i formatted the drive. I'm going to bring it to work and see if i can get results on my mac at work. i'll post the results.

  • Have airport extreme, square model, have a external harddrive to use as back up(formated for mac)hooked it up to the usb port in back. can't find it on my computer. what am i doing wrong

have the airport extreme, square model. have a external harddrive formated for mac hooked up to the usb port in back.
i can't find the harddrive on the computer for back up in timemachine. what am i doing wrong?

First, if you are not aware, you need to know that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
That may be part of the problem here, so if you want to continue to try this, you need to understand that there are no guarantees of success.
Some users do seem to be able to make this work, but most have some problems and some....like me....have nothing but problems when they try this.
If you want to continue to try this, the first thing to verify is that the drive is formatted specifically in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Have you verified that the drive is formatted correctly by connecting it directly to your Mac and using Disk Utility to check?
Some drives that are advertised as being "compatible for Mac" are not formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Time Machine has no chance of success unless the drive is first formatted correctly.
I would also ask that you consider leaving the drive connected to your Mac for Time Machine backups. That will be supported, and is a far more reliable way to keep backups if your data is important to you.
Next, we need to know what operating system you are running on your Mac. If you do not know, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac.  Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

  • How do I transfer my firefox bookmarks from an external harddrive to my new windows 7 computer?

I backed up my old pc on an external hard drive. Now, I have a new computer with Windows 7 and need to transfer/import my bookmarks from the external hard drive to my new computer. I found my bookmarks file on the external hard drive, I think, but don't know where to put the file on the new pc.

The user data is stored in the profile folder. You can copy more than just the bookmarks by copying the relevant files from your backup into your current [[profiles|profile folder]], for details see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup Profile backup - MozillaZine Knowledge Base] or [[Recovering important data from an old profile]].
The bookmarks file is called places.sqlite, that file also contains browsing history. You can copy that file from the backup and place it in your current [[profiles|profile folder]] to restore the bookmarks and history.
An alternative approach if you just want the bookmarks, inside the backup of your profile folder there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups. Inside that folder are files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json, those are backups of your bookmarks. You can import one of those files into your current version of Firefox by following the restore procedure in the [[backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article, using the "Choose file" option.

  • Need Help setting up a Fully-Accessible External Harddrive on Network.

Alright Ladies and Gentlmen of the Apple Support Forums,
I'm fairly new to servers in general - but I thought I'd be able to figure this one out on my own...I guess I was wrong
I am the tech head of a video studio that needs to share a single 12 TB external 3.0 drive on the entire network. I want all to be able to read, write, and delete as easy as possible.
    Here's what I have:
    - 20mb/s UP and 20 mb/s DOWN coming from Northstate into my modem.
    - I have my modem connected to my new Airport Express.
    - I have connected my airport express to my Mac Mini server (new).
    - I also have it connected to a 24 port netgear switch.
    - My switch is connected to about 11 stations across the studio.
    - My LaCie 12TB drive is connected via USB 3.0 to the mac mini and is available to view in the "shared" finder window for all computers. In other words, everyone CAN see it.
    - I have set everyone up with their own username and password to connect to the server. I have set permissions through the server (file sharing) to allow all users to Read & Write to the external Harddrive.
    My problem:
It seems as though any file or folder created by one computer is not accessable by another computer - and vice versa. One user has NO permission to write or copy a file into a folder that another user has created on the external drive.
    My needs:
I really want this to work freely. I want all users to be able to write, read, and delete any file or folder on the External HDD through the network. I don't want to have to set every folder created on the external to sharing or have to manage permissions at all.
Ladies and Gentlemen! What am I doing wrong?!

Underlying the Mac OS is unix. By default when a file or folder is created, it is owned by that user. Other users don't have read/write permissions.
I suggest reading a bit about unix permissions work.
Unix assigns permissions for 3 categories for each file and folder. Self, group, and other (think of other like the permissions you would want a complete stranger to have).
If all your users are members of the same group, you can use unix permissions to allow anyone in the group to have r/w permissions. You'd first need to define a group, and then assign all the users to that group.
Lastly, you'd want to associate all the existing files you already have to that group.

  • Can I back iphone os to an external harddrive?

I am trying to upgrade to the newest OS on my iphone 4 and my computer does not have enough space available to backup my phone.  Can I back up to an external harddrive and then upgrade the OS and if so what are the steps?

The backup is located in the iTunes folder, so you would need to move the entire folder so as not to mess up iTunes, but it can be done.
I would suggest moving other files and applications to the external drive, before I would move iTunes. For proper operation, your startup disk should have at least 10 - 15% free space, so you need to do something regardless of this iPhone upgrade issue.
