External Harddrive w/ Mac OS X Tiger

Hello, I was wondering ----- if I install OS X onto a firewire or usb hard drive, would i be able to boot up using OS X on a PC or other Mac's, like physically have everything that is OS X like full desktop, dock, etc etc functionality?

There are some other limitations not originally stated. Some Macs may not be able to boot of systems you put on that hard drive. Macs will not normally boot off systems older than they shipped with. PowerPC Macs will only boot off
Apple Partition Map formatted partitions, and Intel Macs will only boot off GUID partition formatted partitions. To create a dual Intel Mac/PowerPC Mac boot drive, see this tip:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
PCs can't read such volumes without http://www.mediafour.com/ 's MacDrive.
If you want to create a volume both PCs and Macs can use with read/write capability, but not boot off of without additional software, format the hard drive FAT32.
If you don't mind a volume being read only on a Mac, but can only boot on a PC, NTFS is the formatting that will work. You can make NTFS writable, but not bootable on a Mac with MacFuse
If you share one of these volumes on a network, formatting won't matter as far as saving and reading files between PCs and Macs. Here's how to make a crossplatform network:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
The drive again won't be bootable.
Also when a drive isn't bootable, it really is a data sharing only drive, and no preferences, and no applications can be stored for those applications.
The Dock will let you put on it documents, folders, and drives on the side closest to the trash can regardless of the formatting, as long as the drive will mount on the Mac.
Edit:
This article is a good starting point to find out what system the Mac shipped with:

  • WD External Harddrive for Mac

I just bought a WD mac external harddrive.
    I have a pc desktop.
I just got a macbook pro.
I want to move my files from the pc to the external harddrive, and be able to access them from the macbook.
will i be able to easily do this?
also, can I have an itunes library saved on the harddrive and be able to listen on the macbook and sync from the macbook?

There are two ways to do this ...
1 - format the external drive as FAT32. Then it can be used on both your PC and Mac. The only limitation will be that the maximum file size on a FAT32 drive is 4GB. That will be a problem if you are saving video files, as they are often larger than 4GB.
2 - format the external drive as +Mac OS Extended+ and install MacDrive on your PC. You will then be able to use the drive on both your PC and your Mac, no file size limit.
Regarding your iTunes library, yes you can move it to your external drive and use it from there. Just keep in mind that if the drive is FAT32 then you are facing a 4GB file size limit. And, of course if you disconnect your drive the iTunes library will not be available on your laptop

  • External harddrive for Mac G5

    Hi
I would like to get an external firewire harddrive for my mac G5 any sugestions out there.
    Kindest Regards
    Joe

This reply may not be very popular, but here goes...
I usually watch the Sunday paper for circulars from places like CompUSA, Staples, Office Max, ect. If you look at the sale section, you can normally find Firewire external cases. I have built five of these and the cost has been minimal. The nicest cases, in my opinion, are two Acom Data cases I found at CompUSA for $29.99. They came with Firewire (400) cables too! In these two cases, I mounted a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300GB drive and a Maxtor Diamondmax 9 200GB drive. So, with these two drives I have almost 500GB of storage. I believe I paid $79.99 (after instant savings and mail-in rebates) for the 300GB drive (at Staples, I believe). So, for $110 I have a 300GB external Firewire drive. The drive is fast and I can boot my machine from it.
My daughter needed a drive for her iMac about 6 months ago. I bought a 40GB Maxtor mechanism for $20 on eBay. I found a Firewird case for $20, also on eBay. I think it cost me less than $5 to ship each item to me. So, for less than $50, she has a 40GB external Firewird drive.
Just last week, my son needed a new drive. Office Depot had a special in their circular on a 100GB Maxtor Diamondmax 10 drive. After all of the rebates, the drive mechanism's cost is $19.95. I found an old Firewire case in the garage and now he has a 100GB external Firewire drive.
If you don't forsee the need to boot from the drive, you could buy a case that only has a USB 2.0 interface. These are actually more readibly available and usually less expensive.
I don't know why more people don't put their own drives together. It's really easy and saves lots of money.

  • How to format external harddrive  for mac use!

Should I use My new external hard drive right out of the box for back-ups, or re-format it? Its a 1 (TB) drive?

Unless the drive is specifically intended for usage with Macs, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you’ll be using it with Time Machine, Time Machine will do that itself if needed.

  • Is there is common format for an external harddrive for Mac and a PC?

I'm planning to have some 8mm film digitized, and would like the result to go on an external drive that could be used on both a PC and a Mac.
I think that FAT 32 would work, but that it has a file size limitation that might be a problem with video files.
    My questions are:
First, is there a way of formatting an external hard drive which that it would work both both a Mac and a PC for transferring/working with video files?
And two, what codex should the film to video be saved in, to work with iMovie?
And three, does it matter now is the hard drive is USB, or must it be FW?
    Thanks,
    Hal

First, is there a way of formatting an external hard drive which that it would work both both a Mac and a PC for transferring/working with video files?
FAT32, unless the drive needs to contain files which are 4GB or larger, in which case, no.
And two, what codex should the film to video be saved in, to work with iMovie?
    DV.
And three, does it matter now is the hard drive is USB, or must it be FW?
    It doesn't matter.

However on my windows pc I can see the drive clearly now with all the files in any directory, while before the upgrade I couldn't see a lot of files on the external harddrive bij Mac or PC. Macbook pro 17" - Airport extreme - Ipod 60Gb - Iomega 320-GB MiniMax   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Windows XP/Vista

I had the exact same problem, here is what helped me, hopefully it will help you also...
I have been using my airport disk (edge_diskgo external HD) now for about 3 weeks, it has been rock solid... until tonight after the firmware update.
My macs could not locate the airport disk, but my pc's still could.
(Maybe this was how the security problem was solved? You can no longer access the Airport disk from macs? Brilliant!)
It turns out that all I had to do on my both my macs is go to
Airport disk utility (just type that in spotlight) and check
both boxes: Automatically discover Airport Disks
Show Airport disks in menu bar
Then I went to the top right hand side of the menu bar, and clicked on the airport disk utility icon, clicked on my basestation name and entered my basestation password.
I also had following settings in Airport Utility/Disks/File sharing:
    File sharing is enabled
secure shared disks (with base station password)
    Guest access (not allowed)
Share disks over ethernet wan port (checked)..
Advertise disks globally using bonjour (not checked)
My drives are back up with all of their contents, working now, we will see how they do tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help on this post, special Thanks to trevinwagner, hope this helps someone else.... its very late, Goodnight all

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

How do I back up my iphone5 to my ICloud account, whqen iI have forgot my restrictions password. My restrictions pass code has my icloud a account greyed out? Can i backup to a wd external harddrive, or try to backup to a new mini-mac, I just purchased yesterday? This is my first iMac and IPhone5, so i am kinda out on my own, and can use some pointers!! My phone is full of pictures, and will not download anything, until i store my pictures somewhere!!

If you don't remember your restrictions passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it using iTunes. Do NOT restore your backup. The restrictions passcode is part of the backup.
Everything on the phone will be lost.
You can extract the photos from the camera roll the same way you would from any other digital camera. Having a restriction passcode set should not prevent that. do that before you put the phone in recovery mode and restore it.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

  • Using time machine to backup my mac to external harddrive as well as backing up a second seperate harddrive to another external hard drive???

Hey Guys, i currently have time machine backing up everything on my 2011 imac to an external harddrive, which is working fine! No problems there.
As a photographer, i currently have two seperate harddrives. Harddrive (A) - All projects/files, & Harddrive (B) - Backup of Harddrive (A) with all projects/files.
What i'm wanting is for time machine to continue backing up my i mac as usual to the external harddrive, whilst also backing up the contents of Harddrive (A) to Harddrive (B) at the same time without backing up everything on my imac
    Is this possible to do??
Hope you understood what i meant easily! haha
    Cheers
    Leslie

Sorry Leslie but time machine cant do what you are asking for, however there are free apps like backuplist+ that can sync Harddrive to Harddrive, the app can be found here

  • Using Mac OS X and external harddrives

I was wondering if there is anyway to allow Mac OS X to copy/edit files on a Windows-Formatted external harddrive because I want to use the harddrive with both Windows and Mac OS X on my MacBook Pro and use Mac OS X for Itunes, Movies, etc., and Windows as well. If there is no way to do this, is there a way to format the drive so it can be compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows XP/Vista?

You need to format the drive as FAT in order to use it with Windows and Mac. On the Mac side, you can use Disk Utility to format the drive as MS-Dos File System (this is FAT).
    Hope this helps =)

  • Problem accessing Seagate External Harddrive from iMac and Mac Book Air

I have a brand new Seagate 2TB external harddrive which I have just used to backup my entire iMac files (photos, videos, etc) via the Time Capsule programme. However I now can't access the files which apparently have been copied onto the Segate. I have now connected the Seagate to my Mac Book Air and it is not even being recognised as an external storage device.
Is someone able to tell me how I can access the files on the external drive?

do you mean "time machine" as opposed to "time capsule" the latter is a back up drive in itself.
before you did your backup was your seagate drive formatted or did you just connect and instruct the mac to back up to the drive.
if the drive was not formatted then you will need to format the drive using disc utility.

  • Using an external harddrive with two different Macs

I have an iMac flat screen, 800 MHz. I've had great luck with this computer until now. Yesterday I purchased a new iPod Video not realizing it would not support FireWire. My old iPod's jack became very loose, so I finally relented and bought a new iPod. I know that there's no way to upgrade my USB to 2.0; however, all my music is on an external harddrive. Can I connect it to my wife's new Mac Book Pro, set up playlists on her iTunes, and refresh my iPod's playlists that way, but still use my external harddrive on my iMac? I'm worried about losing information, specifically all my music. I can upload music to my iPod using my iMac, but it's so slow (10mbs). With my old iPod I could upload lots of music in a few minutes, now it takes hours.

Have a look under the "itunes" help forum.. there you will be able to find (or do a search for) keeping our music library on an external hard drive. Configure your wife's Macbook Pro to use the library on the external drive and you shouldn't have trouble. I would set up another user account on the Macbook Pro so that your wife is still able to have a music collection of her own. Good luck!

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?
