External harddrive won't sleep in Yosemite

This has been happening since previous OS (Mavericks).  Any tips to share, anyone?

Unless your'e using them, turn them off. If you're using them, don't sleep them.

  • External display won't sleep

I just purchased an NEC PA271 27" LCD display for my Mac Pro. It's beautiful, clear and sharp, but there's one problem: it won't sleep.
When I put the computer to sleep or shut it down, the monitor doesn't go into sleep mode. The blue LED on the front is supposed to turn amber, indicating sleep, but it doesn't.
I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, as well as repairing permissions, to no avail.
    Any ideas?

I should also mention that I didn't have any problems with my ACD 23" previously, so it would seem to be an issue with this particular display and how it communicates with my Mac Pro.

  • External Harddrive won't work on iMac

I have an external harddrive that I previously used on my PC. It only has generic JPG files saved to it. When I plug it in to my iMac it is read only and will not allow me to save things to the disk. In the information menu it shows that it is read only and I cannot modify the files or create new folders.
What do I have to do to make this work? Is there any initialize process or something?

The safest thing to do would be to get a new external drive. Look up the reviews via Google on the external drive before buying. Best to get a drive that is Mac friendly.
    You could try this driver:
NTFS-3G for Mac OS X is a read-write (finally) NTFS file-system driver. This means we can finally write to memory sticks larger than 4GB (formatted with NTFS).

A bad driver would trash your external disk. Backup important data.

  • External Drives Won't Sleep

    Hi
Since upgrading to Leopard none of my external drives go into sleep mode when not being accessed. They do when connected to other Macs... so that points to the iMac.
Tried resetting the SMC and also 'put hard disk(s) to sleep' is checked in energy saver. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Many thanks
    Colin
PS I use Lacie drives... Quadra D2 and Porsche

I have the exact same problem. I have my energy setting to put my drives to sleep when possible. I also have an external Firewire drive. In Tiger the external drive was sleeping unless I was accessing it. Now with Leopard the drive constantly wakes up. Just now I hit the back button on Safari and the drive woke up. Crazy.
Unfortunately I have no idea what is causing this, but do have the same issue. I see you excluded them from Spotlight. I just tried that and will see what happens. Are you using Firewire or USB for the external drive? I'm going to switch to UBS and see if that makes a difference.

  • External harddrive won't shut down in Mavericks

    Hi all,
I have an external hard drive from which I boot OS X Mavericks on my iMac late 2007. In all previous OS X versions, the harddrive would shut down whenever I put my iMac to sleep. Now with Mavericks it won't anymore. It will constantly spin while the computer is sleeping. I have to completely shut down to make the harddrive switch off. Is anybody else expierincing this kind of problem, and does anyone know how to solve this?
    Cheers
    Oli

*****FireWire and thunderbolt HD interfaces seem to be universally affected.   I've seen no exemptions yet to same
Its happening on 80% WD Raid My Book on this board and others, and happening entirely on Firewire and Thunderbolt drives
Its seen on O Raid and 1 Raid both alike.
also occurring on LaCie (Seagate) FW drives.
until resolution , use external USB drives proven to work with Mavericks.

  • Help!  External drive won't connect after Yosemite 10.10.2 update

I ran the Yosemite 10.10.2 update on my 2013 MacBook Air today, and now I cannot connect to my external Western Digital hard drive.  At times, the drive won't connect or show up at all, but at other times, I get a warning that the computer cannot read or repair it.  Help!  It worked this morning and all of my photos are on there.  I know other people have had similar issues, but I haven't found anything resembling a solution.  (And yes, I have restarted everything, tried different cords, etc.)  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • External drives won't sleep properly

    Hi
I have my preferences set to allow drives to sleep when possible.
In Tiger this meant that my external drives slept most of the time. They would awaken only when directly accessed by the Finder or an application.
In Leopard my externals are constantly waking.
I have them excluded from Spotlight. They will start when I access something in the Finder that has nothing to do with the drives. They will also start when I access an app like safari.
    Any ideas what is happening?

I have the exact same problem. I have my energy setting to put my drives to sleep when possible. I also have an external Firewire drive. • External Harddrive unrecognizable after sleep

I have a 250GB external mybook. It is hooked up via firewire 800. However, when I wake my macbook up after sleep i get a "Device Removal" error saying I disconnected the hardware inproperly...etc. After this my external hd is unrecognizable unless I restart the computer. Any suggestions on how to fix this? (I unchecked "put harddisks to sleep when possible under the energy saver)
    Thanks~Justin~

Go back to the Energy Saver panel and as an experiment uncheck the box for "Put Computer to Sleep." See if that fixes the problem. If it does, next thing to try is re-checking the box on "Put drives to sleep."
This keeps the processor going even while the drives and monitor are sleeping. This does not save as much energy as you would by putting the processor to sleep. I have several computers (including an iMac and an Intel Mac laptop) where I have everything except the processor (computer) go to sleep. These Macs have several firewire drives connected (both 400 and 800 firewire) and I never see the problem you are reporting. It would be interesting to see if when you set up energy saver the way I have if you get similar results.

  • External harddrive won't show in windows explorer Windows 7

I have an interesting problem or so I think it's interesting. I have a n HP Pavilion DV6-7001ax,  Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit just turned a year old.  My problem is I had a 1tb western digital My Book Essential it's alos about a year old.  Two days ago for some reason It stop showing up in windows explorer.  I tried everything I know to get it to come back but no luck.  I thought the drive was dead, however I hook the drive up to my wife's desktop and after it installed the drivers it works just fine, she's using Window 7 Ultimate x64.  I tried it in my daughters laptop, she has a HP Pavilion also model under mine, the drive works just fine she's using windows 8 64bit and I have another laptop wich has Window 7 Home Premium 32bit and the external drive works just fine on it.  So I tried and tried and tried but it won't work.  My wife and daughter both have a 1tb seagate external drive and both work just fine on my laptop.  Note: I've plugged in several different USB devices and they all work except my WD external drive.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Seriously Frustrated

    AntonBC57,
    Turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
    Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.
This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.
Here is a link to command prompt.
When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.
Since it has not been to long since the problem started, you can run a system restore.
This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.
Here is a link on how to do a restore.
Let me know how everything goes
    Have a good day.

  • External Harddrive won't mount anymore

    Hi Guys,
I recently copied over a load of stuff from my harddrive to my iMac but today it seems not to be playing ball. I've looked up the drive on Drive Utility and it is recognised there except i can't repair, mount or verify the drive.
Has anybody experienced this before and if so do you know what i have to do to fix?
    Cheers
    Jim

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC and try Disk Utility again. If still no joy, try something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools.

  • My external harddrive won't stay mounted in Lion

    Hi gang!
I just upgraded my OS to Lion and I really like it for the most part.  What I don't like is that for some reason my external HD keeps "unmounting" itself.  I'm running 10.7.1 and my external drive is a WD 500GB drive using FAT32 formatting and connected via USB 3.0.  The drive will mount for a short period of time, then the error screen pops up saying its been "improperly removed".  Any suggestions would be awesome, I keep a lot of work files on my external drive.
    Thanks!

I just solve the problem after 45 minutes with the lervel 3 WD support. You have to return to firmware 1.02.06 since the 1.02.10 version has a network card driver error and in some configurations (a lot more) the disk just stay connected for a couple of minutes. To do that you have to manually return to old firmware but WD do not has the file as public so you have to call them. One way to stay connected a bit more is making a permanent ping to the disk.

  • 500GB WD My Book external drive won't sleep!

I recently bought a 500GB WD My Book external drive. I formated it as Mac OS Extended and ran a complete backup of my Mac and other external drive. Now the activity light blinks non stop and the drive stays running even though its not being accessed. I've also checked the security of my network thinking maybe somebody on the outside was getting access. I don't get it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Open the Spotlight pane of System Preferences and add that drive to the list of locations not to index if it isn't already there.

  • External disks won't sleep?

I recently changed from a ppc g5 to an intel mac mini and find that my four wd smartbook USB drives no longer sleep when the mini is shut down, is this normal?

Hmm, while the mini is up and running, both pairs of disks DO sleep, it seems pointless that they run full-time when I shut the mini down and stop when it's awake!!
Kind of makes a joke out of a low energy computer
I'll try leaving the mini on but just let it sleep instead, see if that's any better.

  • After installing Leopard External Harddrives won't mount.

I have 5 EHD connected to my iMac. After I installed Leopard, none of the drive show up on the finder nor in Disk Utility. I tried resetting the PRAM but no go. I checked then drives on my iBook and they mount. I did disk repair but it said no repairs were necessary.
I check system profiler and it can't find anything in the Firewire ports. I have a firewire connected printer that is also not showing.

I can get the HDs to show up if I don't use the hub.
