External hd and iPhoto
Can i use my external hd as the primary source for iphoto? i.e when i plug in my camera and iPhoto is open, can it copy straight to my external hd and read my iPhoto library from that source? As i would not have to back up to the hd if they were archived there in the 1st place,

Yes you can. I have my iPhoto Library on my external. But I still back that up to DVD.
To change the default file store location, go to terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.iPhoto RootDirectory /path/to/desired/location
To remove the change default:
defaults remove com.apple.iPhoto RootDirectory

I have run out of space on my powerbook's internal hard drive. So i have been forced to copy all of my photo's over to my new Lacie External Hard drive. I then deleted the photo's out of my Photos Folder in the users folder. Now when i drag the photo's from the external drive into iPhoto they are automatically copied back into the Photos folder and thus fill up my internal powerbook hard drive. So i now am back to having 1.6MB of space on my drive. Does iPhoto have an option like in iTunes where you can select the folder where your data will be stored?
No, you will lose your keywords, comments, labels, etc. I don't know of any way you can convert to an alias based library and retain the metadata from the old iPhoto library. The only organizational information you will retain is the original roll information/grouping.
There is possibly a way you can retain the keywords. It involves using the demo version of iView MediaPro and then an apple script designed to import the metadata from the files back into iPhoto. If you're interested in that process post back and I'll spell it out.
I've posted what I hope is a more comprehensive workflow here describing one way of accomplishing the change over to an alias based library.

hi i was uploading pictures into iphoto witch is on my external drive and i accidentally unpluged the drive while it was uploading the files and now everything is screwed up this is the massage i get when i try and open iphoto from this drive The iPhoto Library is on a locked volume. Relaunch iPhoto when the volume has read/write accees or relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down any ideas please help
imac intel Mac OS X (10.4.4)Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the external.
If that doesn’t open then you have damaged the Library.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

I have a MAC and use IPHOTO and had used Adobe Elements 9 as the external Editor and IPHOTO as default. NOW I upgraded to Adobe elements 12 and IPHOTO only recognoizes Adobe Elements 9??? HOW do I make it go to the new external editor?? I appreciate any help you can provide?
You need to reset the external image editor in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to the right version. I assume there's an Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 folder in your Applications folder. This screenshot is for PSE 10 but would be the same for 12:

IPhoto11, external HD and new iMac
So I hvae an old iMac running iPhoto 11. have it configured that all photos automatically are stored on an external hard drive and bypass my current harddrive altogether. I just bought a new iMac and have a few questions.
1) I hooked up my external HD and iPhoto finds the photo library. It tells me I need to upgrade the photos to work with this version of iPhoto. Do I select "upgrade"?
2) If I do upgrade, will these photos remain on the external hard drive? Will the current events/albums/etc sorting remain the same or will they be merged into one single event?
3) How do I set it up so that all new images are transferred to the external drive and bypass the new iMac.

MacBook Pro iphoto external HDD and can't open iphoto.
I have a Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.2 and I cannot open iphoto. My HD has 0 kb free. Is this why? It worked yesterday and I haven't uploaded anything new, just attached a WD my passport ext HD and did a time machine back up. I can't locate the Iphoto backup on the external HDD. When I attempt to open iphoto I get an error message - Unable to write to library "iphoto library". Its got around 850GB of photos in there. Plan was to back up time machine on one HDD, then just the actual photo files to another HDD and store old photos on the external drives, thus freeing up my MacBook Pro.
I have a copy of time machine from about 2 weeks ago which is when my old external drive ran out of space. The new drives are WD My Passport for Mac 2TB.
I've tried holding down the cmd-alt buttons and can get the menus up but if I click 'repair database' I get the same error message up.
Any ideas?
I have dragged the iphoto library from finder, which is showing around 850GB, to the WD HDD and its backing up but very slowly!!
If I can get iphoto open I can get some photos off of it which no doubt will solve the problem!!The ext HD is not partitioned. It also has a Time Machine back up on it
You don't want to run an iPhoto library off the same drive/partition the Time Machine uses. It will eventually run of of space and damage the library. Running a library in that manner is asking for problems.

What is the best way to keep my photos backed up on an ext HD before/ after editing as I want to keep the original as well as the edited version.
That's what iPhoto does. When you edit a photo the edits are applied to a modified version separate from the original/master version. iPhoto has a Revert to Original option which removes the edited version. Also when viewing an edited photo in the edit mode the Shift key will toggle between the edited version and orignal version.
Any ideas if it is easy to extract my music from itunes from time machine back up?
Enter Time Machine, go to the Music folder or wherever you kept your iTunes library, select the library and click on the Restore button. It will be restored to the Music folder on your boot drive. If you want to restore the library to another location Control (right) - click on the iTunes library and select "Restore to .....". That will let you pick the location for the restored library.
am thinking of getting LIghtroom to use instead of iphoto but have no idea whether it would talk to the photos that are in iphoto on my ext HD. Perhaps Aperture would make more sense?
Lightroom works alot like iPhoto and Aperture, a database based application. You can't use both Lightroom and iPhoto. You'll have to pick one and use it alone.
However, Aperture can use the same library as iPhoto so there would be no converting the library as LIghtroom would require.
Your best solution would be to daisy chain another EHD off of your TM hard drive to use with your iPhoto and iTunes libraries and any other files you'd like to keep there to use. Then have TM backup both your boot drive and the second EHD. The TM drive should be about 2X the size of the drives it's backing up.
So if you go that route you might want to get a new EHD for TM that's big enough and use the current TM drive as your working drive. -
I have just purchased a new my book hard drive and would like to connect it to my time capsule and store my itunes and iphoto contentent there to free up space on my internal hard drive . Can this be done and what is the process?
I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy. -
I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac. After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore. In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year. To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period! Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos. So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on. These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine. But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified. This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April. Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage? If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?

I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

I have a mac mini with iphoto 08 on it as well as a Drobo external storage device that houses all my photos video and movies - I just purchased a new 24" imac that came with iphoto 09 -
Can I share the iphoto album that resides on the drobo with the mac mini as well as the new imac -
I am asked to upgrade the album when ever I open the iphoto application - if I do this then the Mac mini can not open the iphoto application - I am guessing that this is due to different versions - imovie works perfectly -

No - as you have observed iPhoto '08 and iPhoto '09 use a different library structure and neither can read the others library - iPhoto '09 can convert '08 libraries to '09 but it is (as you are warned when you do it) a one way process - if you want to share a library all versions of iPhoto must be the same so you would need to purchase iLife '09 for the mini

You post in a workstation forum, Mac Pro has 4 internal drive bays and easy to expand and upgrade.

hi.
i have an external hard drive where i would like to store some of my very large photo library. i would like to use iphoto but it seems like when i use "add to library" for a folder on my external drive it copies all the photos from that folder to a folder on my iBook..where i dont want them to reside. is this what is happening? i would like them to only live on the external drive and only appear in iphoto when the drive is connected...is this possible?
Also, are there...dare i say it...alternatives to iphoto? i have picasa2 on...dare i say it again...a pc, and i really like the way that program works. is there anything similar to that out there? Please help me out! I would really appreciate it.

iPhoto imports all images into it's own database (iPhoto Library folder). this is the only way it works.
You can however have the iPhoto Library folder reside on the Mac formated external drive.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the external drive.
Launch iPhoto Holding down the Option key. At the prompt choose to open another library and navigate to the library on the external and choose it. iPhoto will now use this library to import all images to.
As far as other programs, you can try Graphic Converter, iViewMedia and iViewMedia Pro, and a slew of others that can be found at VersionTracker.

How can I back up only iTunes and iPhoto to an external HDD
How can I back up only iTunes and iPhoto, so I can reformat my computer and restore the files in these two programs? I have an external, but its not big enough to create a time machine copy of my HDD. I have an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. I am also running Windows 8 via Parallels and I would prefer to keep this partition in tact, but if thats not possible I'll re instal that program.
Some how Mackeeper and a couple other shady programs have been installed on my computer and what I want to do is reformat my computer.You could drag the iPhoto and iTunes folders to the external drive and move them back later.
However, it might be easier to just remove MacKeeper and other adware.

Bought a New Macbook Air and wanting to transfer only iTunes and iPhoto stuff to the new Macbook Air. How should I do this? Ive got and External HD acting as Time Machine but the Data on there is 143G worth and the New Macbook Air is a 128G HD. So i dont need all the extra Documents but want to keep them on the External HD which has been Partitioned.
Question is - How do I transfer the iTunes and iPhoto info into the New Macbook air and keep all its settings ect and also keep the Docs ect in the HD? Time Machine wont work as there is too much info for the New Macbook Air.
What should I do?In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.
