External HD as Startup Disk won't work after Restoring with Time Machine
Hey all, this seems very simple; very, very simple at that... But I might be overlooking something here:
I recently had a MacBook running the latest OS X Leopard, until my cat decided I didn't need it anymore and added a glass of water to the mix! So after weeks of freaking out and praying... I found myself with a loaner computer, this iMac G5 1.8 GHz, successfully running leopard for the most part.
Here's the good news: I had Time Machine backing up all my files from the MacBook that can't swim. It was backed up on a partitioned 1tb Western Digital hard drive, like 700gb for TM and 300gb for an external HD.
What I am trying to accomplish is to use the TM backups from the 700gb side to "restore" the system onto the other 300gb external HD side, and use this is the main disk on my iMac G5.
So far, after a 7 and a half restoring session with my Leopard install disc, I think the 300gb external HD is prepped and ready to go, but I can't select that HD as a startup disk, and when I first restarted after the restoring session with my Leopard disc, the startup disk I wanted was "not found" and it quickly went back to the 80gb iMac internal drive. HELP!
Maybe this isn't possible because I'm backing up and installing onto the same HD?
So far, this is where I am at... and I think I'm on the right track!
I don't care what is on this loaner computer (it's one of those... you know, "long-term" loans from my parents...) So I reinstalled Leopard, fresh install. I had an option of restoring from Time Machine, and then I realized I'd be restoring to the wrong disk, so why not install Leopard onto my external partitioned HD that I have been wanting this whole time?
Looking closer, apparently I need to completely repartition my WD external hard drive with an Apple Partition Map because I'm using it with my Power PC-based iMac G5 (beggars can't be choosers!) If I had an Intel-based Mac, I'd be OK with my partitioned HD that I set up with a GUID Partition Table with my drowned MacBook, right?
So, like I said, I am on the right track... all I'm waiting for is to borrow an addition external HD to shuffle some files around before I can do this right... hopefully. Another question: am I able to duplicate my Time Machine Backup HD to another external HD? Or will I have to get really creative or "ghetto" in my attempts to bring one restore of my past computer?
Thanks for all your help and support! And to answer the other question so far, all my HDs are connected via firewire. Thanks!!

Samsung 4500 Printer won't print after restoring from Time Machine
My HD drive went down, and was replaced with a new one (1TB). Restored via Time Machine. But the printer (Samsung) won't print now. I get an error that a software update is required. I tried the System Preferences route; then I went to Samsung and downloaded a driver (once), that didn't work. I found another note that someone was having a similar problem, and tried this download
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCX-4500W
Installed OK, but still no printer.
It worked fine until the software changes (I was using Mountain Lion before and after the HD failure).
But now, I have no printer.
Any suggestions besides buying a new printer?Apple support drivers:

Pages (and Keynote and Numbers) won't open after restore from Time Machine.
Hi, I tried to open my iWork suite tonight and kept getting an error message 'Pages cannot be opened because of a problem' followed by the text, below. Has anyone got any idea what I have done? What I need to do to get them back working?
Recently I did have a big clean up of my Mac Pro - which included drive renaming/home drive rename and relocation - all seems to be working fine for a few months until I've tried to use these applications for the first time tonight. Even restoring them from my Time Machine hasn't helped).
I'd be so grateful if someone can give me some useful advice. Thanks.

I had not updated the iMac to 10.7.4 yet, and I was able to open Pages. I next tried to open the version of Pages on my iMac while accessing it remotely on my Air. It gave the same message. Do you have any idea how I can fix this?

Super drive is not working after Restoring from Time Machine
well its pretty much the Subject actually, my imac giving me BlueScreen problem so i searched and posted question and the only Solution i got was to Re-install Leopard and i did that by using Leopard DVD and Restored my imac from Time Machine backup, But i got into new problem and now the TIME after restoring from the "Time Machine" my DVD ejecting EVERY CD,DVD etc. even the Leopard DVD which he reads happily.
I dont think its a hardware fault at all, but i'm not a "Genious". Any suggestion!Issue solved with visit to Genius Bar.
As I understand it here are the steps the Genius did. Attempt to create the account (system preferences->users) with the same information. It will say it already exists. Very carefully read the options. One will say use the existing account. BE CAREFUL because one option will wipe your data.
If you need to do this it might be worth the trip to the Genius Bar as you could wipe your data. One precaution I took was to bring a full copy of that user account onto my desktop (from the backup immediately before the wipe) in addition to the one in the user folder. Once we verified that the account was working I moved the desktop copy to the trash and again verified the account (just to be safe).
Hope this helps someone else. -
OS X Restore with Time Machine via LAN does not work
Hi all,
i did a full backup of my mac mini with mountain lion on a time capsule via LAN. Tried to do a full restore on a new hard disk and connect to the time capsule after i booted into a restore environment. I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!
Using a local USB disk with time machine everythings workes fine. But the main reason why i chosed time capsule is, that i can make my backups of all the used mac books and minis via LAN / WLAN...
So, is there anybody else experiancing this Problem?
Regards,
DavidHi,
tested OS X Restore with Time Machine via QNAP NAS Box - working without any problem. So with the Time Capsule it might be firmware problem?!

IMac won't startup after restore from time machine
After I restore my backup from time machine ( twice ) mi iMac halt at startup and won't startup. It stuck at the apple logo forever. I also restarted holding down command R safe mode and install OS X and it will startup okay but can't see my buck up files and applications here. Then I restore from time machine again using an earlier backup and it won't startup again. Please any help I will appreciate.
There could be a few reasons for this.
First what version of OS X do you have installed?
What version of OS X is the Time Machine Backup file from?
Did Reinstalling OS X from Recovery install the same version you had before reinstalling?
If you have not changed OS X versions then:
It sounds like there may be a bad file in the backup that is causing the computer to not startup after restoring it. This is especailly true if the computer boots just fine after a fresh installation of OS X, but without the Migrated Data being restored.
If that is the case, then the solution is not a quick one. You have to hunt down the bad file.
Moving Files Manually (Not in Migration Assistant)
Manually access your Time Machine backup folder from within Finder (you should see the backup drive in a Finder Window or on your Desktop). Once open, manually move data from the User folder (documents, music, movies, photos etc.) into their respective folders on the Mac. Reboot after each folder you move to see which folder contains the corrupted file then delete the affected folder/file after reinstalling OS X from Recovery.
If none of the files cause the computer to hang at startup after moving all your User data, then the issue is from within the System or Library folders.
NOTE: DO NOT manually move Applications, System, or System Library files over to the Mac. You can cause major issues with the current installation by doing so. It is safer to just reinstall all the Apps from wherever you got them so they can recreate their support files and such themselves.
2- Using Migration Assistant
Basically, if you have discovered the affected file. You can just simply delete it from the backup folder.
Reinstall OS X after you have done that, and use Migration Assistant to automatically migrate the data over minus the affected file/folder.
Its a pain in the rear, but it will at least let you salvage most of your data.
Let me know what happens riorec!

New Hard-drive - won't reboot after restored with TM
Hey,
I got a new hard drive yesterday and used TM to restore my last back up. When I went to restart the computer it now doesn't go past the Apple and spinning gear.
I've tried to eject the CD and external hard-drive. I've restarted holding shift, then function, then cmd + alt + R + P. None of these have worked!
Help!
Thanks

First, I guess I should ask just how you did the restore. Did you start up from your Install disc and use the +Restore System From Backup+ option in the Utilities menu, per #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum)? If not, do that.
|
Otherwise, you want #E8 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html]. Here's the direct link: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/E8.html Here's the gist of it:
Why did you get a new drive? If the old one failed, it's possible it corrupted your system as it was beginning to fail, and those changes got backed-up, so were brought back when you restored.
In that case, you might want to do the restore over, but select an earlier backup, from before the troubles started. Just be sure to use your +Snow Leopard+ install disc.
If you used a Leopard Install disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup, that won't work. You may want to just do it over with the +Snow Leopard+ disc, or your best bet may be to just install OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc, then download and install the 10.6.6 "combo" update from the link there. -
Mail.app 4.1 does not work with 10.6.1 after restore from time machine
After I restored my complete system from time machine backup using the original snow leopard install disc. My Mail.app won't start up anymore. It shows me the message:
"You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X"
"You have Mail version 4.1 (1076/1075.2). It can't be used Mac OS X Version 10.6.1 (Build 10B504). For more information, click the Help button"
I don't understand the error message as mail 4.1 was installed as part of Mac OS X 10.6.1?
Detailed event log:
2009-11-03 06:00 AM: Backup succeeded successfully via time machine on my time capsule
2009-11-03 11:00 AM: Original laptop was broken. (Screen didn't work anymore)
2009-11-03 03:00 PM: Got a temporary new Macbook Pro from my System Administrator.
2009-11-03 09:00 PM: Successfully restored complete system on new temporary macbook using time machine with data of my time capsule. Everything looked the same (login image, installed applications, etc...). But when I tried to start Mail.app it gave me the above message.
Can someone help me with this???
Kind Regards,
NielsI've seen two possible solutions to this:
1. Easier, but less likely to work - try to start mail from the Finder, rather than the Dock. If it works, replace the Dock Mail with the Finder one.
2. More probably the solution: download and reinstall the 10.6.1 combo update. I know you shouldn't need to after a TM restore but ... -

Anyone know what this is about?
I'm running OS X on a 2.7GHz i5 with 16GB of RAM on a iMac platform.

Thanks for the help apple community - Take care.Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
Trash won't empty after deleting inprogress Time Machine backup
I deleted an in-progress Time Machine backup. It is in my trash and every time I try to delete it, it prepares 270,000 files for deletion, then it just hangs and does nothing. I've tried ~ sudo rm -rf /.Trashes to no avail. I've also tried to put it back; however, there isn't an option aside from coping. I am at a loss. Aside from reformatting the drive 700GB, I'm not finding any other solution. I really don't want to reformat and rebuild the backup, that is a scary process and would like to avoid that if possible. Any idea's would be much appreciated. Thanks
-Justinjthedwalker wrote:

What does that mean? Nothing happened, or it took a long time and didn't seem to be doing anything?
Did you cd to your TM volume first?
I've also tried to put it back
No; Time Machine backups are full of hard links. Moving things out of the Backups.backupdb folder destroys them, and they can't be rebuilt.
The remaining backups may be corrupted. If you do manage to empty the trash, do a +*Repair Disk+* on them.
As Kappy says, if you can't get rm to work, your only option is to erase.
By the way, you shouldn't have to delete TM backups, but if you do, use Time Machine. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). -
After I restored my complete system from Time Machine, some parts of it is not working and announcing problem to start, e.g. Software Update, My Day from Office 2008....what should I do?
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
First, are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard? Your settings at the bottom of your post say Snow Leopard, but this is the +Leopard > Time Machine+ forum, so I'm not sure which is right.
Did you do the full system restore, starting by booting from your OSX disc? If not, what exactly did you do?
Exactly what is wrong with Software Update? What happens, or doesn't happen? -
Safari Crashes On Startup after restore from Time Machine after hard disk crash
I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.4, 4 GB memory , 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. My 160 GB hard disk crashed two weeks ago and was replaced by the apple store. I was backed up on a 500 GB Time Capsule and restored my system from that source. Everything works appropriately except Safari (Version 5.1.6).
Steps taken to date based on discussions here:
1. Updated all software
2. Booted in safe mode, still crashes
3. Booted as guest, still crashes
Any additional help I can get would be appreciated. In the meantime I have been using Firefox, but all the links that go from email or browswer messages load Safari and it crashes every time.
Thanks, G. Silver

I think I solved this. From another question on the forum, I found the following:
Download and install Safari 6 from this link (it's the link used by software update to download Safari6 for Lion 10.7.4) :
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/37/23/041-5058/lr5tynbldi18zcrqo8a8uq88 rnjushqliu/Safari6Lion.pkg
I did this and Safari 6.0 is now up and running without crashing and all my bookmarks etc were preserved.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction. I would stll be interested in why Software Update wouldn't download Safari 6.0.
All the best,

What har drive is recommended to work with Time Machine smoothly?
What hard drive - other than Time Capsule - works smoothly with Time Machine? I'm looking for one that is a little less expensive that Time Capsule but will work as well with Time Machine.
Thanks for your help.
VernonMost any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
Most drives come formatted for Windoze, but most of them can be re-formatted on your Mac to work with it. See item #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Also note item #1 there for size considerations; and items #3 and/or 4 for using with other data and/or other Macs.
If you think you ever might want to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive (some WDs aren't). Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB.
Depending on what ports you have, FireWire 800 is by far the fastest; FireWire 400 next, and USB slowest (F/W 400 and USB 2.0 are rated about the same, but since your Mac's CPU has to do more of the work with USB, actual throughput is usually less).
Many folks think USB is less reliable than FireWire. If you do get USB, be sure to connect it to a port on your Mac, not a keyboard (that's USB 1.0). Try to avoid hubs, too.
It's usually best to get a drive with it's own power supply, as taking power from your Mac can be a marginal proposition.
Take any advice for or against particular makes or models with a grain of salt: all makers (of just about anything) can have a "run" of bad components, or a relatively few early failures. Plus, by the time any really good trends are noted, the model has probably been revised or replaced anyway! -
Hello to you all,
My Macbook Air won's boot up and upon diagnosis, i realized my startup disk is full to 99% even with 2GB Hard Disk space. It wont also enable me boot into safe mode too.
when i power up, i get this prolong gray screen which wont change screen but remain so. Infact i am handicapped.
Please help as all my work documents and project files are on this machine and i can't afford to loose them all...
Please, should you have any solution please send me the details to [email protected]
Thanks you a millionh times.
Al.The MBA seems to cause several problems to several users on boot ups
On start up my MBA would not boot up the apple logo came on but only a blank screen appeared no fan i followed several start up recommendations but to no avail so I took the MBA to the nearest Apple repair centre again the same symptoms on start up ......very sorry sir you need a new mother board that will be $500 not feeling confidant in the product declined and was going to put it on ebay for spares.
On return home I pressed the start up button and it started normally everything was working fine i decided to reinstall all the software what has caused the problem I have no idea but it is after several attempted reboots it finally started on its own so don't give up if you have this problem it may come to life -
Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine.
installed new internal disk first with fresh 10.7.3 Lion software. Also upgrade ram to 4GB. Work great, super fast.
BUT.... my WD 1TB firewire400 external disks no longer work with the Lion enabled machine now.
FURTHER... I read somewhere that WD is problematic with Lion but Seagate was not... so I went and bought a new 3TB Seagate GoFlex.
When it didnt work properly either, I patiently searched and found a software/firward upgrade and applied.
I re-partitioned disk to extened/journaled standard, etc.
Then assigned the particition to Time Machine. Drive turned the blue/grey color, so I thought it would work.
But, it has now been in "preparing" mode in Time Machine for HOURS....
What is up Apple? So dissappointed. Ive read these type of problems are notorious with Lion and I wish I never upgraded.
Are you trying to make issues with External disks, to drive people to iCloud? That trick ont work in me. I will not reward bad behaviour Apple.
Please provide a fix... I wasted hours/days screwing around with this, instead of using the Mac for what its intended!Solved by Pondini, on another thread I opened...
Answer:
Sounds like either:
A directory problem on your internal HD. Verify your internal HD, and Repair any other volumes being backed-up per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Something in OSX may be damaged. You've tried the "combo," so a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else) would be worth a try (and you don't need a tech for that). See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.
