External hd backup problems

Hello Apple Maniacs !
i plugged an external hard disc case (icy box ib3218 series 3,5" HDD JBOD subsystem with 2x1,5TB) on my mac . I formatted both disks
in disk utility to JFS+ extended to use em for data storage . the 1st disk i decided to use it for my
time machine backups . The problem i m experiencing now is that every some minutes while time machine working for backup my data the external drive seems to dissapear and appear instanltly from
my system and cause a fail to the back up (now i noticed this happens even if i dont use time machine ..even on my media playbacks from the external HD.
i dont know why my ext HD's keep restarting all the time , and im afraid for my data atm stored there , Maybe i should make something different reformat on disk utility application or ...
Your help would be appreciated

After reading the troubleshooting C1 and according to that i reformated both disks to HFS+ journaled with GUID partition table (same partition table as my internal HD uses on my macbook pro) .
So far i managed to do the 1st time back-up pretty fine .
Yay!
Now i m checking why the external hard drives occasionally goes on sleep even when im playing files fm them ( i used to had on energy saver settings the option to disable the disks when possible enabled before -factory default , i disabled that option and the xternal drives seems stable now , sounds a bit strange for me , but works.
Yes, on occasion they won't "spin up" quickly enough from sleep, and even more rarely changing that setting will help. You might also see if the maker has a firmware or driver update for your disks.

I am using 2 externial harddrives with my movies, music, and tv showes, books etc... which i run in itunes so they are all orginased in an itunes folder I am using 2 harddrives because I dont have enough memory on my computer. all the files fit on one but i got an extra so i could make a back up of the other encase something happened to the only one i would have had
My question is this There are some files i want seperate from the other harddrive so when i get lets say a few movies, or music, and i cant remember which ones but know i need to make a backup and want to copy them to the other hd to have a backup I dont want to do a mirred copy to the other. so what i have been doing is copy and paste say the movie file and paste it to the other hd movie file it will then say some of the files already exist do you want to copy over them or something similar if i say no it will cancel the whole thing if i say yes it will copy all the files over the old ones and take forever. I hope im still making sense! sorry for any confusion !  is there any way to only copy the files that dont exist on the other harddrive to the other ? I dont want to just copy the itunes folder because it would take forever to copy all of the files over and most of them are already on the other to begin with just a few songs i dont have on one but not shure which Any help will be appreciated

  • Time machine, finder save to external hard drive problems

I have a new 2.26 GHz mini and I wanted to get bootcamp going and install windows xp. The instructions suggested to backup the hard drive and I thought this is a great time to try the time machine. I plugged in a external hard drive, opened time machine (Time machine said it needed 29 GB for full backup and the drive had 32 GB free), selected the drive, and let the "backup count down(I think it was a minute and a half)" run down to zero. Time machine started backing up the my main drive to the external drive no problem. It was running good (100MB in 5-10 seconds) for a little while when I noticed that it had reached 2.3 GB and was not going any higher. I let it stay like that for about 5 minutes thinking that maybe it would start going again. No luck. I shut down time machine and saw a finder window with the progress bar behind it saying 2.3 GB. I push the stop button and it said stopping, but it would not stop and disappear like it should. I relaunch the finder and the icons on the desktop disappeared and would not come back. I relaunched repeatedly but they would not come back. Since the bar at the top of the screen would not come back I had to hold in the power button to shut down the computer.
Upon restart everything seemed to work fine until I tried time machine again and it would not work. So I tried to manually backup the files to the external drive. When I copied some files the little finder window popped up and said, zero KB of 290 MB, and would not change. I left it running while opened a browser and did a search for an answer to my problems. After about a half an hour I went back and saw that some files had been transferred. When I looked in the Activity monitor, I saw it was saving the files very slowly. I went to the finder progress bar and when I hit the stop button, it would say stopping but it wouldn't. I would have to relaunch the finder to make it stop. Then I tried to copy the files to a shared drive on my network and the same thing happens.
Before using the time machine both these drives worked no problems. I went to the shared drive computer and used that machine to copy the files from the mini. All files transferred no problems. So now I'm trying to find out what is wrong with my mini. It seems that it has to do with the finder since it effects both the usb and ethernet hard drives. All other functions work as they should. I don't know if anyone has had this problem after using time machine but any help would be appreciated.
Also I tried deleting my com.apple.finder.plist and relaunch the finder. No change.

That's much too small for your backups. Time Machine usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up (see #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum).

That sounds like the drive is not formatted properly. See #C1 in the Start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
The other problems may have the same cause.
Most likely, it's set up for Windoze and not suitable for Time Machine. With only 32 GB free, you must have other data on the drive, so you probably can't erase it and reformat it for Time Machine.
Report back with your findings for the *Partition Map Scheme* and Format of the drive (per #C1), and we can figure out what to do next.

  • Hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files'

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

  • HT1178 Time Capsule used as External Hardrive Backup

If I want to use a Time Capsule as an external hardrive backup for my MacBook Pro, how do I do it?
What cords do I need and can I get it to back up wirelessly?  I don't want my own wireless from it,
because we already have it in the house - I just want my own storage unit and I have one, but no
cords to go with it.  Need to get cords - which ones?

This is out of my area of expertise, but I believe you can set the Time Capsule up so it doesn't generate a network, but is on the existing network.
Then you can back up to it wirelessly.
You should still do the first backup via an Ethernet cable if at all possible, as it will be 2-3 times faster than WIFI, but then backups can be done without having to connect the cable.

  • Satellite L850 - external 1080p display problems

I had been running my Satellite L850 laptop via HDMI to an external monitor without problem for many months.
A couple of weeks ago I attempted to update the catalyst driver and have had problems ever since.
Basically now when I select 1080p mode via the catalyst control panel it makes the screen flash and have vertical lines.
Occasionally it will work for a short period, even up to an entire day and than it will randomly start again. I can play a game in 1080p mode and it will be totally random, sometimes allowing me to play for hours without having the black screen flashes whilst other times it will flash constantly and the only way to resolve is to either restart or pull out the HDMI cable and plug back in and cross your fingers you have enough time to reopen catalyst and change to 720P which is always stable.
    I have tried:
    1. Using the AMD Catalyst removal tool and reinstalling via the original factory default Toshiba catalyst drivers
    2. Using System Restore to go back before I made the changes
    3. Using the AMD Catalyst removal tool and updating to the newest version via AMD website.
    4. Reinstalling my chipset drivers along with #1
    5. Tried a different monitor (still happens)
On a side note every time I use the removal tool it removes my USB drivers also and I have to reinstall.
The current graphics driver is AMD Radeon HD 7670M and I have also tried the solution on the tech support forum here http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/item/781.
I have run out of options other than a complete format and reinstall which I want to avoid if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Probably your problem has nothing to do with the picture issue mentioned in the technical document posted by MisterX.
I could read in your first post above, that this issue appeared exactly after the driver update.
    > A couple of weeks ago I attempted to update the catalyst driver and have had problems ever since.
Are you 100% sure that the display driver update has caused this problem?
You have also mentioned that this issue does not appear always but sporadically and every once in a while.
From my point of few there are some open questions:
    1) Is it really an graphic card driver problem or maybe an GPU issue?
If the issue did not appear in the past (before the GPU driver update) then yes: it could be related to the driver.
    2) The notebook support also an Intel HD graphic card (its part of the Intel CPU)
I think you should check if the same issue would appear using the Intel GPU.
Try to uninstall the AMD driver (from device manager as well as from programs & features are within the control panel) and test it using Intel GPU only.
    3) Last but not least test the notebooks video output with fresh recovered notebook. After the recovery the graphic card driver should be the same which you have used before the update.

  • External Hard Drive Problem with latest Upgrade

Since my lastest software update on my mac mini (the most recent, only a few days ago), my external hardrive has been reading (loudly, this is the problem) a chunk of data, about a MB or so, to the processor every 60-90 seconds. none of it is being written. there's no CPU usage (i just watched the activity monitor for a while). It happens even more frequently when I'm using itunes (stored on the Ex HD).
My hard drive is a LaCie with firewire connection.
    Any ideas, anyone?
    Thanks.

    JOrdan,
You write that everything functions as normal with the external drive disconnected.
Then (if I am surmising correctly) when you reconnect the external drive., the problem returns.
From this, I infer that your computer, without the external drive, is perfectly able to perform all of its functions.
But there is something on the external drive that requires some of these functions to be performed on it - a file of some sort that is set to be regularly checked and updated in some way.
So it sounds to me as if you might want to take a look at everything you have on the external drive, and try to pin down that one thing that is asking the computer to do work on it.

Yes. There is no difference between internal and external ones. What
exact devices are supported depends on what backup software you use.

external to backup having trouble setting up and getting started

Okay, first you will need to setup time machine to backup your system to the new hard drive.  Just open time machine and turn it on, then select your new hard drive and time machine will start the backup in a few minutes.

  • Backup problems with external hard drive

I bought a WD passport external hard drive and copied my itunes library onto a file there. I re-set the location of the library on itunes to the drive on the external hard drive. So far I have not deleted anything from my computer hard drive. However, when I am in itunes and click onto a song, nothing comes out of my speakers. Everything looks normal, as if the track is playing, but nothing is happening. I tried buying a new track off of itunes online, downloaded it, and installed it on my ipod; it plays fine, on my ipod, but will not play on the computer. Something is obviously wrong, but I can't figure out what has happened. Any help out there?
    Thanks!

It sounds to me like your iMac is on it's last legs....at least the internal hard drive. If you can't make a new Time Machine backup I would advise you replace your iMac as soon as possible.
Assuming your three-week old backup is sound you should have no problems moving everything over to a new Mac. I would recommend you use the Setup Assistant that appears when you start up the new Mac (and note: It only appears the first time you start the new Mac; you can move everything over later on via Migration Assistant, but you may see issues with accounts if you opt for that route).
I don't think you need the Genius Desk for Setup Assistant. You only have to power up the new iMac, answer a few questions....select "....From Another Disk..." When it asks how you want to move everything over....connect up your Iomega external drive...and wait for it to finish. (Could take several hours depending on the amount of data you're moving).
    A couple of notes:
    1.  If your Iomega is a Firewire drive you'll need a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter to connect it to your new iMac.
    2.  If you need to load CDs or DVDs remember the new iMacs don't contain an optical drive. You would need to get an Apple SuperDrive or third part external burner if you need that functionality.
I'm puzzled by the comment made in Seventy One's post questioning the reliability of the new iMacs. I upgraded from a 24" early 2008 model to a 27" model and everything works flawlessly. I hardly ever see the beachball anymore.

  • External Drive Backup and Partition Problems

I'd like to setup Time Machine to back up a smaller external drive (250 gigs) onto a larger external drive (1 TB). This is all I want to backup, nothing on the internal drive.
However, when I go to the exclude list, my smaller 250 gig hard drive is listed by default and I cannot remove it as it is "greyed out". Could this possible be because it's FAT32 formatted?
Additionally, I'd ideally like to format the 1 TB drive into 2 partitions - 1 to backup the 250 drive (so maybe like 400 gigs) and 1 to use for other things (600 gigs). I tried to do that with Disk Utility, but it keeps giving me an error and telling me to "try reducing the amount of change in the partition size".
If not that, is there any way to cap Time Machine's backup size otherwise? Sorry for the multipart question, let me know if you have any other ideas of how to make this work. Thanks!

Could this possible be because it's FAT32 formatted?
Yes. Time Machine can't back up a FAT32 drive.

  • Time Machine Backups external drive developed problem which the disk repair utility cannot fix, so suggested reformat. I can't reformat because the "Resource Busy". How can I reformat this drive?

My Western Digital external hard drive which I use as a Time Machine Backup stopped working. I tried repairing the disk using the Disk Utility program, but got the message that the utility can't repair the disk and to erase and reformat the disk. When I try that, I get the message the operation can't be completed because "Resource Busy", even though Time Machine is turned off. Any suggestions for repairing the drive/disk?
    Thank you.
