External HD change back to windows format

Hi Guys,
Recently I backed my macbook up with TC using an external HD which OSX said needed to be formatted for TC to work.
But now I need to change the external HD format back so windows can read the HD.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

Windows cannot read the external hard disk if you plug it directly into the PC.. (unless you download a HFS+ viewer which are available free). But windows can read the hard disk as long as it is connected to the TC.
It cannot read a TM backup though. You need to create a directory and copy the files to it.
In the TC setup make sure you turn on guest read write access and set the workgroup to the correct name.
Any other issues will be on the windows computer and should be resolved there.
Try and access the TC directly from windows explorer by typing the IP in the address bar thus,
\\ipoftc\
If it is no accessible try and ping the IP and see if it is responding.

  • Recover data from external hard drive that was Windows format and connected on a Macbook Pro. Did I lose everything? What happened?

Hi there this is my first question here!
I connected my external hard drive originally formatted on PC on my new Macbook. The first time I connected it I could see all my files but today I connected it and after I couldn't see any file nor even on my pc appears as NO NAME with a different name and nothing on it. I think was reformatted, any help to recover all my data?
It's really important stuff for me

If the Apple Store couldn't get files off of the drive, it is unlikely that you will be able to. If you have backups, those would be the best way to go. You could also try booting up the computer and holding down T to boot into Target Disk Mode. Plug the broken computer into another one with FireWire and see if it works to recover data from external hard drive. If you can see it, try booting up the broken computer while holding down Option. Choose Recovery HD from the menu, then choose to Reinstall OS X.
It is unlikely that this will work, because I'm pretty sure that the Apple Store would have tried this. You could try using expensive software to get files off the drive, but it would be risky and the results might not be any good.

  • Windows formatted drive

I have an external hard drive which is Windows formatted.  I have pictures, a lot of pictures, on this external drive. I would like to copy these pictures from my external drive to my Mac.  Unfortunately, when I connect my Windows formatted drive to the Mac, it will ask me do I want to format my external drive.
How do I get the Mac to recognize the external hard drive without formatting the drive?

After connecting the external drive, open a Finder window and see if your external drive appears in the Finder sidebar. If so, select it and copy the files you want to your internal drive.
OS X does not ask you to format the external drive if it is formatted for Windows. If OS X asks you for this, ignore it. Also, OS X can read Windows formats

Restore your iPod in iTunes for Mac. Just be aware that restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Mac version and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Changing the format back to windows

I first used my ipod on my mac book, and it formatted it to use with Macs, i now need to use my ipod with my windows laptop but i cant seem to convert it back i have tried restoring it on my mac but it doesn't giv me the option to go back to windows. When i plug it into my windows laptop it wont let me restore it there!
Does anyone know what i can do so that i can use my ipod on windows even though it says formatted to macintosh

You need to restore it using the Windows machine. Keep in mind that restoring will delete everything on your iPod so be sure you have the content stored elsewhere as well.

  • Documents saved in firefox format cannot be viewed in the preview pane. Why? Also, I don't want my documents changed to another format. How do I change back?

Documents in Firefox format do not open automatically in the preview pane. Why? Also, I don't want my documents changed from the original format. How do I change them back and how do I keep this from happening again. I don't want to have to select a different format every time I try to open a document. That is a pain in the neck. I want to "click to open" and the document be in it's original format. If necessary I will go back to one of the other browsers I have used in the past. As I don't want multiple browsers on my computer it would be necessary to uninstall Firefox. I like it so far other than you all hijacking my documents and altering the way they open. You also might want to remember that even the "legitimate" folks on the internet are seen as predatory, i.e., gathering information, tricking us into installing crap we don't want or need, and in some cases, requiring a specific program to open a specific document. I'd be working very hard to show you are trustworthy. If you have a solution to this and it is complex then you will be wasting your time and my time trying to explain it. You guys created this so, if I'm going to use Firefox, you fix it on your end. FYI, if I have to uninstall Firefox I will, when asked, strongly recommend against using your service. Thank you.

    Do you mean PDF documents?
The installer was supposed to add Firefox as an ADDITIONAL viewer for PDFs, not as the DEFAULT viewer. Sorry you were affected by this glitch and hopefully they will figure out why some systems get changed this way.
You can try this fix suggested by a user in another thread:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat*
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
    Does that work for you?

  • How to format external drive for use against windows and mac

    Hi.
Please bear with me, a possible MAC newbie here
I'm about to buy the 13" Mac Book Pro (after ditching the Lenovo X301 because of a super slow processor, slow FSB, slow intel graphics).
But I have a couple of questions before I buy this Mac Book Pro.
    NOTE:
My main OS (stationary pc) is Windows, and will probably be so for a long time.
But I need a lightweight laptop while on the run, and could not actually find any other one than the Mac Book Pro that met my requirements.
I'm using Adobe Lightroom for indexing and managing images on my windows stationary computer and will also use Lightroom on my Mac Book Pro.
I'm to use an external HDD for this purpose and will need to be able to both write and read to/from that HDD from both MAC and Windows.
Export lightroom library to External HDD from Windows (thumbnails + keywords).
Import new images and edit keywords etc from mac book pro in lightroom.
Import changes into my windows library version after been edited from library in mac book pro.
What options do I have when it comes to formatting that HDD?
What will the PROS and CONS be for the different options?
Note (I'm not to switch to Aperture (my main computer is still Windows))
    Regards

Hi.. and thanks for that answer... another related here:
I'm to buy this external drive:
    http://www.lacie.com/no/products/product.htm?pid=11038
    This page:
    http://pc.wikia.com/wiki/FAT32
tells me that windows XP will only format FAT32 to max 32GB,
will my upcoming MAC book PRO be able to format that whole disk using FAT32?
Or do I have to use something else to format it with?
    Regards

  • If I donwload e-books from various e-book retailers and want to back them up on an external hard drive without losing the format, do I need a special hard drive?

If I download e-books from various e-book retailers and want to back them up on an external hard drive without losing the format, do I need to know anything special?

I just looked into this as I was moving my iPad to a new computer for synching.  With no thanks to Kobo for any really useful information on their help site (this discussion was the most useful info I found), I think the following may address your issue with respect to Kobo.
    1. There is not easy or official way to back up Kobo books from your iPad.
    2. Kobo keep track of your personal library.  Go to the Kobo website (Kobo.com) and sign in to your account.  On the very top line is "My Library".  That contains (or at least Kobo says it does) everything you have ever bought from Kobo.  Kobo say that you may download any of this content to other devices you own at no charge.
    3. I synched my iPad to the new computer.  According to Apple, that will delete all my data as the apps are re-installed from the new compute.  While all my apps got moved around from the order I previously had (many thanks Apple), all my books are still there together with my bookmarks etc.  Looks like this did nothing to change any Kobo data.
While I do not like the idea that I cannot create a backup on my main computer, it is probably safer in the long run that there is a backup at Kobo.  After all, I could lose all my equipment in a fire or something, and then personal  backups would be of little use.

  • Export window format changed, don't know why

You know aperture is a love/hate relationship. What do I love? I became an advanced user fast, it's intuitive, but the bugs are just maddening and apple has never responded even once to my countless bug and crash reports. Apple has strayed so far from computing as it's central focus... the impression I get is they just don't care about my bug problems or if I stay an apple customer after owning that little baby Duo laptop, PowerPC, ibook and now MacBook Pro. I think that's sad. Just keep pushing the phones and ipods- Steve, and don't worry about me. I'll eventually just go away. That said, the format of the export window changed to first line: export preset, 2nd line: Subfolder Format, 3rd: "Grayed out" customer subfolder name, 4th: Name Format, 5th: Custom Name, 6th: File Name Example. To my knowledge, this new export window format changed without any action on my part. I don't like it because I can no longer just export it to the desk top without it being automatically put in a folder. The old export window format just had an option for tiff, jpg, psd and a name to type in and where it was heading. How do you get back this old export window format? This is baffling like the disappearing library in the trial version every time you shut down and restarted.

Addressing your final remarks, I don’t see any problem. First: have your current Preset -> Image Export set to what you want in terms of JPEG or PSD etc. Second select the image(s) you want to Export. Select something like File -> Export -> Versions (or whatever you want). The Export panel defaults to the Desktop, and the images will be placed there - no folder is required.
Maybe I’ve missed your point, but I don’t see any problem.

  • HT1339 ipod is in windows format how can it be changed to apple format

when i look in 'about' on ipod the format is windows.  is there an apple format? how can it be changed back to this?

You need a Mac, to reformat the iPod to Mac format. Windows machines cant do that.
Connect you iPod to the Mac, if iTunes pop up, Restore the iPod
    or
Open Disk Utility-> Erase-> filesystem ->HFS+(journaled) may take about 3-4 hours depending on the  size of your iPod HD.
Note that Windows machines don't recognise Mac formatted iPod, however Mac machines recognised Windows formatted iPod.

  • Not enough disk space on a Windows-formatted External Drive?

I keep getting 'not enough disk space' message in Tiger when trying to back up my data to an external HD, formatted for windows (I share it with Bootcamp-based windows partition).
Now, the disk is 100 GIG and I'm only trying to back up 10 GIG. The disk is almost empty, and the disk's trashcan is empty.
I had same issues with a flashdisk at my father's. It was 2 GIG, and I was copying 500 megs of pictures. OSX kept telling me the disk didn't have enough space! Embarrassed, I had to copy photos in batches of 20. Of course, my Mac was ridiculed thoroughly.
    I appreciate any help!

    Hello,
Your problems may very well be related to the NTFS file system used by Windows.
The Mac OS has very limited support for NTFS partitions. It cannot write them at all. And, it only supports reading to a limited extent.
If you want to be able to read and write Windows formated partitions, you should be using the FAT32 format for your Windows drives. The Mac OS can read and write FAT32 drives without any trouble.
But, there are some Mac OS files and archives that absolutely cannot be written to a FAT32 drive either. So, you cannot backup your entire Mac OS hard drive to a FAT32 drive.
The Mac OS "PKG" file type will usually refuse to be written to a FAT32 drive. And, there are a lot of PKG files in the Mac OS installation. And, many of the software update downloads are also in PKG format.
If you want to backup your entire Mac OS hard drive to another drive, then that drive will also need to be formatted as a Mac OS X Extended volume.
But, if you are just wanting to share files between a Mac OS X and Windows XP installation, then you can safely use FAT32 for that shared drive / partition.
    I hope this helps.
As for the comments that you endured, you should have asked him if his PC would even try to read a Mac OS formatted drive / disk. See how much laughing he does then.
Now, there are special programs that will enable Windows to read Mac OS disks. But, Windows cannot do it on it's own.
But, that brings us to another option for you. If you wanted to have all your other partitions fully compatible with the Mac OS (as in formatted as Mac OS X partitions), then you could do that. Then, use a program such as MacDrive on your Windows XP installation to enable you to read and write the Mac OS formatted partitions.
You can read more about that here:
    http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/bootcamp.asp
    I hope this helps.

  • Installing windows on external drive, or other method without formatting HD

I would like to install windows in order to run some CAD software (i dont want to take the performance hit of running in parallels and osx has an infuriating lack of a good cad program) but I also dont want to have to format my HD since I have all these software licenses set up that it would take forever to set back up again. Is there a way to install windows without formatting my HD in order to repartition it? maybe resize the partition or install windows on an external HD?
    thanks!

Windows cannot be installed on an external drive. This is a Windows thing. If you want to use Boot Camp then your internal drive must have no other partitions. Boot Camp will then create a special Windows partition of any size you designate.
If your drive is already partitioned then repartitioning the drive or resizing existing partitions will result in some data loss. Essentially in order to restore the drive to a single partition you must first backup whatever data is stored on the partitions that must be removed. Alternatively, if possible move that data to the main volume (top volume in the partition mapping.) Doing this makes it possible to delete the other partitions, then resize the remaining partition to full capacity. This can be done on the fly using Disk Utility. Of course there's always risk of something going amiss, so it would be wise to have everything backed up.

  • Retrieval of info off Windows Formatted External HD

Hi guys not sure if I am posting this in the right spot. Hope so.
I've got an external HD that I used to back up my windows PC. It's got a lot of pictures that I still want.
I no longer use any windows PC's (except at work.)
I haven't tried yet, but what would happen if I plugged it into the USB of my mac?
Would it just want to reformat to Mac and in doing so, erase all the data presently on it?
Could it read it somehow? Thanks.
P.S. Running windows on my mac isn't the option I am going for.
    Thanks for any help. --

NTFS (a.k.a. Windows) formatted drives can be read from any operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, or at least Ubuntu), but can only be written to by Windows. If you want to be able to r/w to an external drive, copy all the data down to a local drive and then format to FAT32. I think FAT32 has a file size limit of something like 2GB/file, but as long as you're not downloading large ISOs or pirating Windows or something, you shouldn't have a problem.
