External HD crashed by Disk Utility and all partitions gone

I had a 320GB Seagate external hard drive with 3 NTFS partitions.
They are 200GiB, 40GiB, 38.1GiB
I tried to format the middle partition into an Mac Partition and failed. After that, all partitions are gone and when I plug the HD into a PC, the disk manager recognize the whole space of disk as free.
the Log of the Disk Utility is as follows
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Preparing to erase : “PERSONAl”
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Partition Scheme: Master Boot Record
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: 1 volume will be erased
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Name : “PERSONAl”
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Size : 38.1 GB
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Filesystem : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2009-06-17 21:38:53 +0800: Error with volume erase Invalid argument
2009-06-17 21:38:53 +0800: Erase complete.
Then a new "disk2" appears in the Disk Utility and can't be ejected easily. There's also something like picasaUpload stuff bumping up during the short formatting.
I tried to recover it using DiskTest 6.11 but it appears to take 14 hr to scan the whole disk and will not necessarily fix the problem.
I have Anyone have suggestion on how to recover the partition? The 200GiB partition is really important for me.

NTFS partitions can not be readily altered to begin with, and when there are multiple such partitions on a drive you should not attempt to alter only one. Since Disk Utility basically can't manage an NTFS partition, when you tried to alter the 'middle partition' (which in most cases is really a 'sub partition' or secondary partition to the 'main' or primary partition) you destroyed the whole of the volume's data structure. Unless you use a data recovery service or use data recovery software yourself, your data is gone. You should not attempt to alter NTFS formatted drives from Disk Utility.

  • Grey Screen w/ logo on startup, crashes in disk utility and FW disc mode

So yesterday I woke my computer from sleep and launched firefox. After a few minutes it crashed and the froze. I restarted and got the grey screen with apple logo. Restarted many more times and would either get the grey screen with logo or if it managed to startup it would again freeze after a few minutes.
Tried starting up from install disc to launch disc utility to check the permissions and verify disk. This also froze several times put i managed to repair permissions and repair disc. Now I am not able to get it to start up unless from the install disk. I have a bootable backup drive with I tried to connect and use as a startup disc. I just got a black screen when I tried that, I also connected the G5 to my
Powerbook G4 in firewire disk mode. It connected and I was going to attempt to copy the Bootable external drive back to the Drive in the tower and try starting from that, but the G5 then froze in Firewire disk mode and had to be restarted.
I'm out of options here, and desperate....any ideas. I thought that grey screens many times meant software or hardware conflicts. could this just be something horribly wrong with my hardware?
    Help!
    Thanks in Advance!

I've read several response to problems with target disc mode. I'm trying to connect my old computer, G3 tower with OS 8.6, to my new computer, mac book pro. I've called tech support twice and they have no clue as to why it won't work. They suggested this discussion page. I tried what one fella did, which worked for him, but didn't for me. I rebooted with shift button down, then ran verify and repair, then shut down, unplugged for a minute or two, restarted zapping pram (optioncommand(apple) P & R keys. Then restarted with the T key down. Attached firewire to both target computer and disc computer, (did this first), but no jumping firewire icon ever appeared.
One fella out there said it took his computer 5 minutes for the icon to appear. Did he hold the T key down all that time? I let go after my normal desktop icons were up and the computer stopped wiring.
I am calling tech support back...who knows maybe I'll get someone who knows something.
    Any ideas?

  • Disk Utility and other Utilities GONE from Utilitis Folder

On my PowerBook G4 I noticed that some icons don't look right and an installer disk (for iLife 06) won't run....So I remember it's been a long time since I've run permimssions repair. I go the DiskUtility Folder and almost everything is gone The only thing in there is Bluetooth File Exchange and one or two other items. There should be about 30 apps in there...! What happened? How can I get Disk Utility back ? Is it possible all these files are actually there but the Mac's directly has just lost them? Perhaps running permissions repair would fix it -- but I can't find it!

Have you tried booting while holding down the shift key? This will force it to boot in to Safe Mode which will force the system to check the disk and to check the fonts. If you can boot this way it may give you some clues as to what is happening. My guess is since you did an archive and install which keeps all of your networks settings, preferences, and cache files intact that the issue is really with one or more of them.
As the problem seems to be caused by Safari and/or AOL I would start by trashing all t he preference files for both applications. In fact it may be a good idea to completely reset Safari which you do by going to the Safari menu and selecting "reset Safari" When you do this it will wipe out all the cache files and other files and give you a kind of new Safari.
These solutions I am proposing a fairly radical. You may lose all your bookmarks, and all or the preferences you had originally set but it may solve the issue.
Another thing you could try is to get a program like Tiger Cache Cleaner or Cocktail or YASU and use it to clean all your cache files.
If doing things like this still don't stop Safari and AOL from causing problems then I think you may have to reformat your drive and reinstall everything from scratch. Make sure you have backups of your personal files.
    Good Luck!!

  • Leopard Disk Utility and Input/Output error messages.

This post is describing a problem I had and how I managed to fix it. When I was researching the Input/Output error message I was getting a couple of people had mentioned this fix on the apple discussion boards, so I thought I would add my fix to support them. (Isn't google fab!) I've no idea if this is the right place for this so please bear with me.
Okay a bit of background:- over christmas we treated ourselves to leopard and as my laptop is now three years old I decided to do a complete reformat and installation. I used my 60GB iPod as an external harddrive and backed everything up. Installed Leopard no probs and was a very happy bunny.
The problem:- I then wanted to remove everything off my iPod. So I thought "I know I'll use Disk Utility".... I tried it with the 'default' setting and got an Input/Output error message straight away (irrespective of whether I did it as an extended journal or not.) When I tried it with the Zero Out option (can't remember exactly what it's called) it came up with the Input/Output error message right at the very end. Argh! iTunes and Finder no longer recognised it, but Disk Utility did.
My research:- After using google I saw some guys on here talking about formatting proper external harddrives using leopards disk utility and they were getting the same messages as me. It turns out it is a fault with Leopards Disk Utility. So I did what the guys recommended.
The solution:- (Thank god I had tiger!) I put in my tiger installation disk, clicked 'install tiger' and restarted the laptop. I clicked my my language, but then rather than going through the actual installation process I went to the top menu bars and chose Disk Utility (using tiger's disk one rather than my laptop's leopard one.) And erased the iPod there. Now when I quit the installation and opened my laptop up properly it worked, both iTunes and finder could see it!!! (I just had to restore my ipod in itunes - and now I'm happily transferring all my music back!)
I hope this helps someone in the same position as me!

I took it to work to use my Windows PC to try and format the drive, but got the same problem. I figured either the drive (it's a 2.5" that used to be inside my AlBook) or the external housing it lives is was faulty. Only way I could test without spending more money is by putting the 2.5" drive inside my powerbook, and booting the (Ti) powerbook from a bootable firewire ipod. I successfully booted from the ipod, and had the same problem with the now internal drive: only visible in disk utility, any attempt to erase fails. Also, I plugged the small 10 GB drive that WAS in the TiBook (but which I removed to put the other, problematic drive in) into the external housing, and it connected to other machines just fine.
Turns out the problem is the hard drive itself.
So now my question becomes: If disk utility can see the hard disk when it is connected (I have it back in the external enclosure now), but gives "input/output error" messages when I try to erase/format it, is there any way I can salvage this drive? It's an 80 GB drive, and I was looking forward to making it my internal TiBook drive (replacing the old 10 GB drive that's in there now).

  • Problem partitioning external hard drive with Disk Utility

I'm trying to create a new partition in disk utility in an external hard drive using disk utility and every time I click Apply it says that "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and can't continue. Quit and relaunch Disk Utility". It is a 3TB hard disk and I already created the first partition of 2 TB, and when I click the + symbol to add a 1 TB partition and click Apply is when the error shows up. I have restart the mac, unplugged the hard disk but the error still shows up. Anyone has any idea??? Thanks for your help in advance
    David

I solved this issue. I was able to create the partition with the format MS-DOS and then I erased it to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Now it is working OK. Hope this help someone

  • I have all of my iTunes music on an external hard drive (Glyph 3TB), all of a sudden iTunes will not play any of my music. i ran disk utility and i'm good. What else can i do??

    Greetings,
I have a macbook pro purchased in 2009. I run the current Yosemite OS X on it, and have over 12, 000 iTunes music tunes stored on an external hard drive (Glyph 3TB). Recently iTunes does not load up on my computer. I've ran disk utility and repair, etc and it says everything is fine, however i can't seem to get iTunes to come up and play music. My questions:
what can i do to fix this?? Is my macbook pro too old that i need to seriously consider purchasing a new one?? If i purchase a new macbook pro, can i hook up the Glyph 3TB to the new one and have it play my music without problems/?
    Thanks,

    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

LaCie doesnt make ANYTHING.  It contains a Seagate 3.5" 5400RPM HD.
Check the HD on another computer, if nothing, your SATA bridge is fried, or the HD (very unlikely since its a Seagate inside)
Youd have to crack open the HD, remove the SATA bridge cart thats plugged into the HD and put the HD into an enclosure or a HD dock to get the data
those external HD use a 50 cent SATA bridge famous for failing.  The curse of all the good HD externals is the junk 3rd party SATA bridges attached to them that crash and burn.

  • My external drives no longer appear in Finder, BUT they do appear in Disk Utility (and network drives appear also)

Hi folks, I hope someone can assist.  I have a Mac Mini 2011 running 10.8.5.  All has been well. Suddenly, when I plugged in an external flash drive (USB), nothing showed up in Finder.  Things I have done:
Confirmed SideBar and other Finder preferences are set to show/reveal external, network, and internal HDs
Tried multiple flash drives and hard drives, using drives formated in GUID/OSXExtended as well as FAT and NTSF. None show up.
Confirmed that the Hidden flag in terminal is not set.
Note:  I can see the drives in Disk Utility, but the partitions/volumes are gray and will not be mounted.
Note: Network drives and internal drives appear and work as expected
Note: My network Time Machine also appears and performs as expected.
The only suspect I can think of is a small, free app I installed this morning called Caffein (which manages the sleep mode).
Also, I loged out and switched to another user account on the same machine (that I use solely for the purpose of troubleshooting), and it was similarly affected.
    Thanks in advance!

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.
