External HD Crashed

Because my laptop has a small internal HD, I purchased a 500Gb external HD on which to store all of my iTunes songs. The iTunes app is on my C: drive, but the songs themselves were on an external E: drive. The external HD recently crashed, and needed to be sent out for recovery work. I have a 2nd external HD that I used for backup purposes. All of my iTunes songs, about 4,000 of them, are no longer accessible in iTunes "because the original file could not be found", which makes sense because the original HD is gone. Is there a method of having iTunes search my backup HD to find the song location? Can it automatically run this search and re-build the file pointers for all 4,000 songs?

I had the same issue when my external harddrive crashed; I had my music backed up on a thumbdrive, but iTunes was looking in the wrong location.
What I did to solve the problem was just change the drive letter on my thumbdrive to the one my external HD had been using. Now, I think this only works if the data on the backup drive is in the same location as it was on the original drive, so if the path to the files is different I'm not sure if it will work. If you right-click a song that iTunes can't find and choose "Get Info" you'll be asked if you want to locate the song; I think you can only do this one song at a time though, and if you have 4,000 songs that would be pretty useless.
Your best bet is to change the backup drive's drive letter to the old HD, as long as the data is in the same location. Here's the process for Windows XP:
1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
5. Click Change.
6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, click the drive letter that you want to use, and then click OK.
7. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change.
If that doesn't work I'm not sure what else you can do besides deleting all the info and re-importing your entire library at the new location, but you'll lose all your playcount and rating info, and if you manually changed any info for your songs before you'll have to redo it all. Hopefully someone else will have a better solution to the problem if changing the drive letter doesn't work!

  • External display crash

    Hi,
I have the Unibody MacBook from late 2008. My problem is that when I connect an external display and using extended desktop, the external display crashes randomly. Sometimes I can watch movies or photos for hours and sometimes it crashes after 3 minutes. However, the MacBook itself does not crash so when I unplug and insert the mini-displayport -> DVI adapter, the computer starts up the external display again.
Does anyone have a clu about this issue?

  • External drive crash.. need to export from ipod to itunes

    hi,
I was storing my itunes library for an ipod touch on an external drive due to space issue. This external drive crashed this yeek and I would like to restore all my music on itunes by exporting my current ipod library to itunes.
    Can i do that? how?
    Thanks a lot!

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from an iPod. A few are advertised as iPod Touch compatible, here are some you can begin your research with:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

  • 10 3.9 - external drive crashes PB when connected by USB or FireWire

Subject says most of it... "10 3.9 - external drive crashes PB when connected by USB or FireWire"
Details: I have one external drive which, when connected to my PowerBook via either FireWire or USB, causes the computer to lock up with the message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." The same thing happens whether the drive is there on bootup or if it is connected later.
The drive worked fine until yesterday, when I stupidly installed Windows Media Player even though the internal drive was almost full. It took a while, but I discovered that disconnecting this particular external drive made everything work again, though slowly.
Then I freed up 15GB on the internal drive, and everything works normally _unless that drive is attached. Another drive connected the same way works fine.
I have searched around on this message but have yet to find the way out. I did figure out what the first question will probably be, so here's the answer:
The "kernel panic message" each time seems to be the date and time and then "localhost /usr/libexec/panicdump: Error (-1) setting variable - 'aapl,panic-info'"
    Where should I start?
    Thanks.
15" Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   External drives connected via USB or FireWire

Still hoping for some sort of advice here... Have tried many approaches but can only confirm that simply connecting that particular drive (or enclosure?) always gets an immediate shutdown.
    Thanks for anything,
    Steve

  • Corrupted files on External HD - crashing iPhoto6

    Hi
I've been using a Maxtor One Touch II external FW HD for my iPhoto library. It had been working fine until I tried to download photos yesterday onto it. I tried to rebuild the library, but it kept hanging. The only way to shut down was to hold down the power button for 5 seconds. I've repaired disk permissions on both internal and external drives, both fine. Tried again using OSX startup disk and it was unable to evven start repairing permissions on the external disk. Some of the files on the external HD are unable to open in anything and they are both jpg and NEF. I think it's also affecting iTunes which I've got running from the same drive as that's crashing now too.
Am I better just trying to pull what I can off the external HD, wiping it, and starting again from scratch, or are there any alternatives.
    Thanks

    Hi again
Just to say that the drive is now not mounting. Disk utility sees it but only has the option for Verify and Repair Disk. Ran that and it's now coming up with Invalid Volume Header, SMART status not supported, and that it's unable to repair the disk as:
    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
It's it completely doomed and needs completely wiping, resetting all the zeroes and reinstalling from scratch? Or can I do an archive and install and try and grab some of the data on there?
It's not the end of the world if I can't get the data back, just annoying as it's the only place some stuff is stored.
    Thanks

  • External drive crash, disk utility unable to repair

I have a 250GB LaCie external disk. I use it to store files that I use with Final Cut. Unfortunately I had a Final Cut crash while the disk was running (or maybe it was the external disk that crashed). This has caused my disk to cease operation. Mac OS recognises it and suggests a repair but disk utility cannot repair it. Is there a way I can recover any of the files from the external disk?

Disk Warrior is known to work much better. http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/index.html

  • External Monitor crashing FCP 7 when rendering

    Mid 2012 15inch MBP
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.5
    FCP 7.0.3
Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter to a 30 something inch tv.
I have a 2 minute music video all pretty much done. Sequence minimized down to one track with Look Suite filters on it, with a film grain overlay. Rendering crashes Final Cut with the second monitor plugged in. I sometimes get the OUT OF MEMORY error as well. Works fine when unplugged.
How can I make this work with a second monitor setup?
I need help troubleshooting this or finding the right searches to find other posts with the same problem. I just spent an hour trying various google searches and have just found that a second monitor can slow down FCP. I don't see why that would be an issue for my MBP though.

Connecting the way your are merely lets you use the HDTV as a second desktop.  If you want to use the HDTV as an external TV monitor (using the proper TV color space) , you'll need something like the Matrox MXO2 Mini: http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mac/mxo2_family/mxo2_mini/

  • Enabling external monitor crashes Compiz

I'm having a problem extending my desktop to an external monitor from my laptop. I'm using Compiz-fusion icon to replace Xfwm4 in Xfce. I activate the external monitor using
    xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900
It turns on no problem and resizes my desktop to 1440x900. My laptop screen now shows the top left corner of the desktop (it's 1024x600).
So now I try to extend the desktop so each screen can be used separately with this
    xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1
This works, for the most part. The only problem is that compiz crashes. I've tried re-enabling it afterwards but it just crashes again. I used fusion-icon to swap to xfwm4 and everything works fine. Does anyone know (how to check) why this is happening?

some hardware doesnt support textures higher than 2048, so if the added display real estate is bigger than that, you cannot use compiz that way.
try setting the second display below the first one (thats what i did), and see if it works that way (remember, neither height nor width can be bigger than 2048)

  • T60 win7 x1400 external monitor crashes...

hi, i am running a t60 with x1400 and a postville ssd. at the moment my computer crashes regualry after a while when i connect an external monitor. doesn't matter if direct or via docking station. nor it makes a difference if i have to external monitors connected. short before the computer crashes the cursor will trasnform from a pointer to the thing you can see on the attached image. cursor will be still functional. up to 60 seco nds later the computer crashes showing a disturbed view on the monitor. you can't see the original content of the monitor anymore.  not shure if it helps preventing from crashing moving the mouse from left to right monitor and clicking right mouse button. sometimes the cursor recovers..

I have the same problem on my T60P!  I am not having heat issues; I believe that the issue is that Lenovo has not released a Win7 x64 driver for the video card.  I have an ATI Mobility FireGL V5250, and the latest driver that windows can find is from 12/1/2008.  Lenovo has no driver for Win7 in their matrix, and the Vista driver will not work.  I have all other updates installed from Lenovo, and am running BIOS ver. 2.25
Lenovo, PLEASE request an updated driver from ATI for these computers!
ATI has the drivers written, it is just up to Lenovo to request the driver be compiled for our computers!  I run an external monitor via DVI-D at 1900x1200 resolution, and this causes the computer to crash at least 4-5 times per day.  Sometimes I get a BSOD, sometimes it locks up, sometimes it just goes black.  If I don't have an external display connected, I never have any issues.
    Lenovo, please support us!

  • Is my external HD crashing iTunes?

    Hi there
To save space I recently moved all my movie files to an external HD (Iomega eGo, USB 2.0).
I removed all my movies from iTunes, then unchecked 'copy all files to my iTunes folder when I add to library' in the 'advanced' preferences, and added all my films from my external HD back into the library
But now whenever I click on 'movies' in iTunes, it simply crashes the application. It's about 150GB of m4v files - is my HD not fast enought? I thought USB 2.0 was supposed to actually be quicker than the laptop-style HD of my 2010 mini?

    Robbie Cooke wrote:
Do you think the speed of USB 2.0 crashing my iTunes?
    Not at all.
    Try this.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
Everything should work fine. Post back.

  • External drive crash

OK, this may have been posted before, but I am not scrolling through a bajillion threads to find out:
I run i Tunes on my PC and kept all music and image files on a Maxtor external drive. It crashed, and in the raw data transfer, ALL the files were recovered except for the i Tunes AAC/MP4 files (13gb--I was not pleased). Before I send it off to an expensive data recovery outfit, does anyone know why these files wouldn't recover?

I doubt that anything would have happened on the mac without his specific permission. Unless your friend opened up Disk Utility and altered a whole bunch of settings?
Try connecting the drive to the Mac and right click on the drive and "Get Info" and see how much free space there is. Then, connect it to your PC and check to see how much free space there is. That way, you'll know whether the data has been physically removed from the drive OR if it's just hidden for the time being (for whatever reason).
EDIT: Updated to reflect that I too have Leopard

  • MBP with External Display Crashes Frequently - DRIVING ME NUTS!

I have 2.66 i7 MBP purchased a few months ago. I love it. As an upgrade from a G5 its nice to be mobile again. I've a SERIOUS issue however:
If i'm working with its single display, things are great but if I plug it into my External Cinima Display (older model from 6 years ago) and run dual screens, it crashes A LOT!
Both screens go completely black and nothing is responsive. I have to hold down the power button to do a hard reboot to get it to start back up. And It can be running for just a few minutes before it happens again. But then it may not happen for a few hours. Its completely random but sometimes it happens during certain actions, like opening a server connection with Transmit or Performing a screen capture with Quicktime.
I took it to a Genius and he ran some diagnostics. everything looked fine. He suggested doing and archive install (reinstalling the system over the existing one) but the problem persists.
I would hate to be out of a machine for a few days to get the graphics card or motherboard replaced but I fear thats where its going. Since it seems to happen only with the External monitor I wonder if its the MiniDisplay Adapter or the Display itself causing it. Is it possible the older display is causing the issue? It certainly shouldn't.
    Any feedback is appreciated.

The issue was resolved ages ago but I don't remember how....... sorry.

  • Firewire External Keeps Crashing My Computer

I recently purchased a MyBook 1TB external firewire hard drive to expand my storage, so I thought it would be a good idea to install back-up software to back-up my essential info on my eMac. My 250 GB Maxtor firewire drive came with a copy of Retrospect Express. I'm familiar with Retrospect (use it at work) so I thought this would be a good idea. It wasn't! After installing & restarting I got a start-up warning & I gave it permission to try & fix-it (2nd mistake). Then after restarting again, I was told that 2 items in my Startup folder in my Library had security issues, so I trashed them. Then after trying to restart again, I would get the "gray curtain of death" forcing me to restart. At this point I wasn't even getting to my desktop, this would be during the restarting. After several attempts, I unhooked my externals and started up fine, no issues. I then added my new MyBook external, again no issues, everything's fine. It's only when I try to add the Maxtor drive via firewire that I crash.
I've tried just about everything I can think of. I can access the drive from firewire of my install disk, but not from my main start-up disk. I've tried daisy chaining it to my other external, no luck, still crashes, a different firewire cable, different firewire port, again still crashes. I've run Disk First Aid several times from both my start-up disk & install disk. I am however able to read the drive just fine via USB (so not all the data is lost, thankfully), but being thank I'm only working with USB 1.0, this isn't really an optimal solution. Something's clashing when I'm using the firewire, something after I installed the outdated Retrospect software (lesson learned). I've trashed everything I can find associated with it, but something's still causing problems.
Sorry if this is long-winded, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave Dobesh

Hi Dave, not long winded at all.
I think you'vve narrowed it down to the OS & Install.
Does the Retrospect Installer have an uninstaller?
    Might try AppDelete...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html
Even if you have to Install Retrospect again to be sure of finding it's files.
    What Format is the External?
Also, WD MyBooks are not a good choice for PPC Macs...

  • External HD Crashed- Importing Backup to Internal HD?

    Hello All,
I have an extensive music library ( >30,000 songs) which meant my 80GB laptop could not hold even half of my tunes. Because of this I had been using a 1TB iOmega external to store my music on. Unfortunately, this external crashed two weeks ago rendering my without my music. My iTunes folder (minus my library) was still on my laptop in the My Music folder so I still have all of my playcounts, ratings, etc, for the songs.
Fortunately, I had backed up my entire library about 3 months prior to my girlfriend's Macbook and she still has everything minus about 400 songs I had ripped since and plus about 300 songs she has ripped since. I recently bought another external HD for backup and also decided to install a new 500GB internal into my laptop for extra space with the plan to keep my entire iTunes library on my internal HD and have it backed up regularly on the new external HD. So I copied my old iTunes folder to my new external, installed the new internal, and then copied the old iTunes folder onto the new internal.
_*So this is where the problems really begin:*_
*1. I really need to keep all of my play counts and ratings (which I still have). How do I put these into the new Library I have set up?*
*2.I know the songs will not be located when I copy them over because they will have a different folder location now, so what do I do to make sure they appear with their playcounts and ratings in the new folder and the new location?*
    Thanks!!!

  • Alias to External Drive Crashes Finder

I have an alias in my ~/Movies folder that is linked to a folder on my external hard drive. The problem is that sometimes when I follow the alias the Finder quickly crashes and then relaunches. After it has done that it works fine when I try again. I have even tried deleting the alias and creating a symbolic link in zsh but that just gives the same problem.
The drive is 1TB, HFS+ Journaled, and I know it's not fragmented because it's a new drive. I just copied the files over a few days ago.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this annoying bug?

Disk Utility shows disk as being repaired or not needing repair suggests the disk structure is okay and using Disk Warrior to create a new directory suggests the problem isn't a directory. So that leaves...permissions? I wouldn't think that would cause a finder crash. A malformed icon maybe? a damaged .DS Store file? a damaged desktop directory? A funky external drive perhaps.
The obvious quick fix is to wipe the drive - I'd go so far as to partition it first. Of course if you have important files to remove that may not be an acceptable option, you'd want to move files first.
Here's a thought. There are several Finder replacements/adjuncts: Pathfinder and Forklift for example. Why not try downloading these programs and get one of them running before you plug in the drive. The Finder crashes, but will these programs play nice? If so, you should be able to take a look at what pops up when the disk is mounted - look at the desktop and any window(s) that open from that drive. If there are any custom icons on the files, remove them. Delete the .DS Store files, etc. See if that works. If nothing else, you can copy important files to another drive or burn a CD/DVD to save the important stuff before you format the drive.
