External HD freezes when transfering data to PowerMac

I have a 933 mhz G4 PowerMac (quicksilver) running 10.4.5. I got an external USB 2.0 hard drive a few days ago (runs off of a pci USB 2.0 card). The drive is a 200 gig Maxtor Onetouch II.
I can transfer data to the external drive fine. When I transfer data to the external drive, it freezes (or finder. it depends on how you want to look at it).
To make thins more confusing, my drive doesn't doesn't freeze if I transfer the data over the USB 1.1 port on my computer. It transferred all my data flawlessly.
My thoughts are this: maybe there is something wrong with the USB 2.0 card. Maybe the card and the external drive don't get along. Or perhaps the drive itself is faulty.

Pat:
LaCie FW drives are widely used by Mac users and should serve you well.
Another alternative would be to pick up a bare drive and separate FW enclosure... Here are some links to some current ATA drive sales I just found:
Best Buy
CompUSA
Circuit City
Tiger Direct
Here's an inexpensive plastic FW/USB 2.0 enclosure that is FW bootable, handles drives up to 400GB, and has an Oxford 911 chipset, which is the chipset of "choice". (You have to be careful when buying an enclosure; some FW enclosure models are not bootable. One of our more senior Members asserted that he uses this one and it is bootable.)
Here's a whole page of enclosures from Other World Computing, an excellent Mac vendor with a knowledgeable and supportive staff. (Aluminum enclosures are generally sturdier and more expensive.)

  • Clean install on new 1TB hdd, Yosemite keeps freezing when copying data from an ext drive and also from a usb

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out why my macbook keeps freezing when I try to drag my data across to it (even small files from a USB).
I've had to force restart over a dozen times today :/
I ran EtreCheck and there are a couple of issues (I've no idea what they mean).
If anybody could share some light into the report below I would be very grateful:
    Problem description:

Thanks - I had a 1TB hdd in my macbook for about 12 months but it started playing up a few days ago (I got the question mark folder on bootup) so I bought another 1TB hdd (same model) and started from scratch.
My macbook is an early 2010... now I'm wondering if Yosemite is a bit too much for it?
The ext hdd is my timemachine backup, so yes I have used it often and it has my TM backups - and the usb is a new usb which Ive used a few times.
The issue seems to be when Im transferring files from an ext drive to my mac. I can use it fine and browse (worked find for 45 mins) then I tried to bring my data across.. and it copied a few gig over before total freeze.
This has happened about a dozen times.
I keep running disk utility and checking the disk. I also just ran the apple diagnostics tool that came in the apps cd - the hardware apears to be fine.
I have a 250 gb partition for the OS and the rest is my second partition for data.
I'm now wondering if I should reformat the first partition, install leopard from the CD, then upgrade to mavericks and leave it at that.
Any thoughts would be awesome. Thank you for reading and replying!

  • When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?

My mac and I rely HEAVILY on the use of alias files and folders. The simple version of my question is: When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?  These are not symlinks or symbolic links, they're all alias files and folders.
Is there any software out there that might help me with a solution?  Are there any tricks or tips you can give me to try?

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.

  • When transferring data from my old iMac to a newer one do the old Apple apps like iWorks override the new versions installed on the newer computer?

When transferring data from an older iMac to a newer iMac (refurbished) do the Apple applications like iWorks replace the ones on the newer  computer?
I have read how to transfer data and using setup assistant but I am concerned about applications from Apple having the same names.

As you likely know legacy apps that are PPC based will not migrate over. However the data files will. I would urge you to inventory the apps you have and their data files to see how important they are and then look app by app to see what app replacements are available. If you are using Office for Mac prior to the 2008 version you will need to get a new license of the app because the 2004 version was PPC based. The files will come over and are readable by newer version of Office for Mac (I recommend the 2011 version) and also readable by the iWorks apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) but those are different apps than Office and work differently and do not have all of the features of the MS Office apps. This is really only a issue if you share files with MS Office users, if you use them for personal work then iWork may be just fine for your needs.

  • Computer freezes when transferring files

Aside from a whole host of other problems I am having with Lion (on a new drive with a complete clean install--twice!!) I seem to be having a very serious one where whenever I try and transfer a file (USB drive, external drive, mounted web drive) the computer become inoperable during the transfer.  While the computer doesn't completely freeze up, it is impossible to do any work as clicking on a window may take 4 - 7 minutes for it to respond to that click.
I sort of feel that this problem is probably what is causing all my others.  The computer becomes totally unresponsive and I often have to wait 30 - 50 seconds for it to catch up on what I'm doing.  It is as if it cannot manage multiple tasks.  Thinking that this was due to my User Account, I logged into a guest account and pretty much had the exact same experience, especially when transferring files.
Doe anyone have an idea as to what I can do to fix this?

They are usually video files, ranging from 700mb to the very rare 2GB. Sometimes it's 4-5 of them at a time.

  • Excel 2010 Freezing when copying data

    Hi
A user I support has an issue whereby Excel 2010 freezes when they are trying to copy and paste data within a particular spreadsheet. This issue is the same whether the file is opened from a network location or locally, the file doesn't seem particularly
large - only 290KB. To troubleshoot this I have so far tried:
Asking the user to save a new copy of the file, and then recreate the file from scratch.
    Reinstalling Office 2010 Std.
Recreating the user's local profile on the PC.
I copied the file to my own PC and found that while I could Insert data as much as I liked, I had the same problem copying and pasting data within the file. Excel froze & eventually Windows prompted me to close or restart Excel. On restart it launched
a repaired copy of the file, in this repaired file the copy and paste issue seems to have disappeared.
I'm not sure whether the issue is truly resolved in this repaired file. When I saved it Windows saved an xml file to say that "One or more invalid conditional formats have been removed." I'm not sure what to make of this, can you advise?
    Thanks

    Hi
Thanks for the suggestions, we've had no joy unfortunately. The spreadsheet in question now doesn't open at all, Excel crashes immediately when we try, even when we use Open and Repair as above. Please find the details below. Another spreadsheet is now giving
us exactly the same behaviour and error code, compared to the first problem file there is very little formulae or formatting in this 2nd file.
Does the below tell you anything?

  • MS-7519 freezes when transferring files

    Hi,
can anyone help me with this problem ???
Whenever i try to transfer or copy files within the same drive or partition or from USB drive, the computer freezes randomly and I need to do a hard restart.
I have a clean install of windows and this happens in safe mode too, especially if the files are larger.
Sometimes the transfer is almost done and the PC freezes almost at the end of the transfer, but sometimes it freezes in the beginning.
And after it freezes when I restart and try transferring again, it freezes quicker ( in the first 3-4% of the transfer )
I have done tests for CPU, RAM, HDD, GRAPHIC CARD, PSU, and all of them are passed.
I have also taken out the HDD and tried to copy files on another PC and there it goes OK.
Is something adjusted wrong in the BIOS or maybe I need to update the BIOS  ???
Have somebody had the same problem or if you have any suggestions  ???
    Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] Computer hungs up when transfering data

    Hi!
Is there a solution to prevent the computer to be completely useless when you copy some files from a drive to an external drive (plugged in USB)?
At the beginning of Linux I was astonished that there were no freezes when doing such things, but apparently it's not the case anymore?
I just had a "this application doesn't respond", just because the copying takes all the resources.
Weirder: if I look at the CPU utilization, I've got quite nothing... 20% tops, with all the cores added together.
I'm using GNOME 3 with latest kernel and open source ati drivers.
I've got an Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.5GHz with an ATI Radeon HD 6870 (in case the graphic card or drivers have some importance) and 4GB of RAM.
Everything is running on one HDD of 1TB.

    Would still be another reminder...
Here is a link to a recent LWN article: http://lwn.net/Articles/572911/
    Edit>
A quick sum up: the problem comes from 32-bit vs 64-bit systems.
Might be solved in kernel 3.13 or 3.14, depending whether a fine solution have been found or not.
    On a 4GB machine, I did this:
    $ su
    Password:
    # echo $((32*1024*1024)) > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_background_bytes
    # echo $((96*1024*1024)) > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_bytes
And now my computer runs faster than ever! (while copying).

  • ITunes Freezes when transfering a CD

As soon as I upgraded to iTunes 6 it freezes when I try to transfer songs from my CD. I spent 3 hours with a genius at the Apple Store to no avail. The phone tech guy had no clue and never heard of iTunes freezing, I think they all need to start reading the forum topics. There is obviously a problem but I don't see any useful information. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Browsing these discussions will probably give you some hints.
More Powerbook and iBook users have the same problem.
Many of them could solve it by letting the CD 'spin down' (could take a minute or 2) and then running iTunes.

  • Screen sometimes freezes when transferring to/from external hard drive

I have a brand-new macbook pro 15" (standard settings). Ever since I've taken it out of the box it's been having this intermittent problem where the screen freezes. The first time it happened was when I was migrating my files from my time machine backup. I didn't make much of it then but it has kept happening for the last 3 weeks or so since I got the computer.
When it happens I can still move the cursor around the screen but nothing responds. I can't close or quit anything, or even force quit. The only thing that works is to restart the computer using the power button. This has led to me losing work on more than one occasion (VERY frustrating). I've tried leaving it for a while to see if it eventually 'wakes up'. It doesn't. I've checked the hard drive and other hardware and haven't found any errors. I've installed all software updates.
All I've figured out is that this seems to happen when I'm transferring large amounts of data to or from an external hard drive. It happens with several different drives, which work fine on other computers, so it's not just the case of one malfunctioning external hard drive. It doesn't happen consistently either - sometimes transferring the same info later on works fine.
Has anyone had similar problems and/or (even better) found a solution? I'm planning to ring apple support once they're open and will update this if I find out anything else.

    Tia,
Songs transfer to the iPod form iTunes. iTunes can obtain the song files from any location: main HD, secondary HD, ExHD.
You need to get the song files on the ExHD recognized by iTunes. Then you just need to sync the iPod to iTunes.
This is the high-level explanation. If you need more info, read the links below and/or post back.

  • K7D Master-L MS-6501 computer locks up when transferring data to external HD

I'm not 100% sure the problem is with the motherboard, but I think I've narrowed it down to the point that the MB could be the problem, and so I figured it was worth a shot to see if anyone else had heard of this problem or perhaps had any suggestions as to what it could be...anyway...
Here's the problem: whenever I try to transfer large data files onto my LaCie 250GB external HD, my computer locks up completely.  No CTRL+ALT+DEL.  No Pass Go (and certainly no $200 :P).  The connection interface is USB 2.0, to which I use the USB 2.0 controller card that came with my MB.  When I connected the HD to my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5150, I think), it transferred the files flawlessly.  Also, when I connected the drive to my roommate's desktop (another homemade system, though much beefier), it also read from/wrote to the HD without a hitch.  I even tried connecting the HD to my laptop, and (since my desktop & laptop are on the same network) mapped the HD onto my desktop as a network drive.  Then I transferred 24GB+ of data w/o any lock ups or problems whatsoever.  However, when I reconnected the HD back to my desktop and tried transferring a little over 500MB worth of files, it locked up after getting about 75% through.  I even tried disconnecting all of USB devices but the HD (and my mouse) and it still locked up after getting so far w/ the transfer.
The issue doesn't seem to be a data-throughput issue, b/c it transferred just fine when the HD was mapped as a network drive, and the drive works flawlessly on other computers, so I don't think the problem is in the drive itself (or the cable).  The only time there is an issue is when the HD is connected to my desktop via any USB port (I've tried both the on-board ports as well as the controller card ports).  Have any of you guys (or gals) ever heard of such an issue?  I hesitate to say it's the ports themselves b/c I've got about 8+ USB devices connected to my computer at any given time, and none of them have any issues communicating back and forth (nor have they ever locked up my machine like it's doing now).  A couple of friends have suggested that it might be a driver or BIOS issue, but I can't seem to find any USB driver updates for my MB model (I have only the ones on the disc that came w/ my MB) and the MSI website warns not to flash the BIOS if everything is running ok with your computer (which it is, minus this issue).  My BIOS version is 1.6 (probably should've put that w/ my signature :P)
I hope this is enough info to go on.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time!

To my knowledge, both of the other systems it was tested on had SP1 installed (I know that's the case on my laptop).
I dunno if it would make a difference, but my laptop has WinXP Home, whereas my desktop has Pro installed.

  • Freeze when transferring camcorder footage to iMovie

After many hours of working well, all of a sudden I have problems transferring video clips to iMovie. 1.16 seconds after clicking the import button, the transfer process freezes. I am also having problems with the iMovie application quitting spontaneously when the camcorder is connected. It is a dv to 6 pin firewire connection from a Canon Z100 camcorder to iMovie 6. I have tried changing camcorders (Z600) and firewire cables, all with same results. The project was going so well until now. Every time I have a successful transfer of a clip, I have to turn off the camcorder before saving or the iMovie application will quit without saving the clip. Help !

Hi Shippey. Thanks for responding. I have 125 GB free hard disc space and am actually saving the movie to an external hard drive (which has not been a problem to this point) which has 199 GB free space. I should mention that some of the projects I am working on were started in iMovie 05; do not know if that matters. And I am having the same problem with new ones originating in iMovie 06. Things were great for several hours and now, all of a sudden, something is not happy in the process.
