External HD Idea, Will It Work?

Can an iMac DVD SE with a DVD drive that has bit the dust be used as a monitor for a Mac mini (temporarily)? In other words can I plug in a Mac mini to an old iMac and reap the benefits of the Mac mini? If not, what are good valued monitors that I could purchase for a group of school kids?

No, you won't be able to use an old iMac like that because it has no "video in" plug to connect the "video out" of the Mac mini. Someone else may have a recommendation for a good display.

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I bought a refurb mini 1.83 dual core 2 last week it has leopard installed, but no superdrive I have an external dvd rw via USB2 will this work with Leopard I dont have any drivers for it(BUT ITS MAC COMPATABLE), but after reading some questions in this forum I am lead to believe it will just work...is this truue? also will it work with Idvd ?

Without knowing the make and model of the drive it's impossible to tell for sure if it will work, but more than likely it will if the drive is claimed to be Mac compatible. You may need to download the free utility 'Patchburn' from http://www.patchburn.de/ because some drives require it. Try if without first however, and you may find that the drive works natively in the Finder and iDVD. If not, install Patchburn and test it out.

I purchased the recommended 1TB WD hard drive. It worked for a couple of days, recorded some programs-- all of which froze after a few minutes, and now my DVR repeatedly shuts down and reboots when the external drive is plugged in. Here's the message I get:
the set-top box will reset because an external hard drive was improperly disconnected
The only way I have disconnected the drive is by going into settings and clicking on "EJECT" as recommended.
Would someone please tell me what is going on here? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with the drive. One thing you can do to try to correct the drive issue is to hold down the power button on the drive. You will get a pop up message that an unknown storage device has been found. Click to accept the new device. The drive should now be connected. Go to the main menu of the DVR box and select the option for DVR. Go to expanded storage and format the drive. Let us know if further assistance is needed.

Yes, you can use either the 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to attach an external USB HDD for file sharing. Either AEBS model would allow you to share out this HDD to either Macs or PCs. From the PC, the shared HDD would appear as a network drive which you can map via Windows Explorer.

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine. I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake a back-up. I have now switched of all screen savers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

Right click your volume icon in the notification area and select "volume control options". From there, you should be able to select the external speakers.

Try deleting the old backup.
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the device name and on the resulting screen, scroll down and tap on Delete Backup.

Ive got the same problem, just got my iphone unlocked, and they told me to sync it to itunes to get it permently unlocked, well everytime i plug my iphone in it says; it wont work as it needs up dating to 10.6.3, which i have already updated, but still doesnt work, so how can i get my phone unlocked?

Also reset the PRAM:
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
In most cases, those two actions will fix the port issue. If it's still an issue, you may need to see if the external hard drive can connect to another system, to ensure it's not having problems.

NEC Multisync 2090uxi as external monitor to Imac 20" - will it work?

I'm thinking of buying this NEC display to use as an external monitor for my 20" iMac.
The NEC's supported resolutions appear to be: 1280 x 1024; 1280 x 960; 1200 x 1600; 1152 x 870; 1152 x 864; 1024 x 768; 832 x 624; 800 x 600; 720 x 400; 640 x 480
Will this work? I don't see the iMac's native resolution on that list.

With Mirroring both displays use the same resolution and depending on the difference in native resolution, will depend on how funky one of them appears.
With Extended Desktop you have a preference panel for each display and a choice of resolution for each display.

Using extended desktop open the Display Preferences, click Arrangement and follow the on screen instructions. Then just drag any open window from the iMac Display over to you other display window and away you go.

I have a 27" flat screen TV connected to my 17" Early Core Duo set to Extended Desktop. The TV Display is excellent for DVD movies in DVD Viewer, iPhoto previews & Slideshows, MS Word PowerPoint Slideshow & presentations, Quicktime videos, Web videos etc.. The only draw back is that working in text windows is a little rough.

The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly.

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.
