External HD issue Error code -36

I am unable to copy or move files to and from my lacie porsch external hd. I get the following message.
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some date in "grab-drop image.jpg" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
any ideas? I have verified the drive it is fine and apps work off the drive. ITunes store will not download to the drive.

Sometimes the iSight has been known to hijack the Firewire bus. I'd try to see if the problem persists with only the Porch drive connected via Firewire and nothing else. An error -36 is an input output error. It often happens also when a hard drive is extremely full.

I am currently using a my external hard drive for my late 2009 Mac Mini, my brothers MBP and my sisters HP laptop. I have a Western Digital My Passport 1T external Hard Drive to back up all are information. I formatted it to work on mac and pc and its on the "MS-DOS(FAT) setup at the momment. Im trying to back up DMG files from my HDD hard drive in my computer to the External Hard Drive to pass them onto my brother. I understand the whole part of me getting the "Error Code 0" where i can only put 4gbs of storage for that. I wanted to no is there a way for me to format my external hard drive for it to work on a Mac and a PC but for me to also transfer my .dmg files with more than 4gbs of that storage to my external hard drive?
p.s Im running on OSX 10.6.8 and the DMG files are alittle more than 4 gbs. From 5-10gbs. Thank you for all the replys. It helps me out and others in the Apple community out!

Hi, Steve. Your proposed procedure is just fine until you get to this point:
...reformat the WD to be Mac friendly *and reformat in FAT32* ...
Reformatting the newly-reformatted Mac-friendly drive as FAT32 will, as you say, simply put you back where you were before, but with your data on a different drive. Omit that step, and you'll have a Mac-friendly drive that you can copy your data back onto.
If you normally work with files exceeding 4GB in size, you won't want any hard drive in FAT32 format. If for some reason you'd like all your external drives in NTFS format, download and install the NTFS-3G driver, which will enable your Mac to read *and write to* that disk format.

Cannot delete file from external hard drive (error code 36) in Finder, but Terminal is ok

I have a relatively new Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have a Western Digital 1 TB Passport. I've been using the passport for about a year now without any problems on older Macbooks in my house. I used to be able to read and write to this drive no problem. I am using the Paragon NTFS for Mac software in order to read and write to the NTFS drive. When I navigate through the drive in Finder, if I try to create a new folder, I do not have a problem. If I try to delete that folder I just created, I get this error:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “untitled folder” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)
The folder has nothing in it whatsoever. I just created it. But if I go to Terminal and I run
rm -rf "untitled folder"
This works fine. Why is Terminal acting different than Finder? This does not happen on my other Macbooks. Thanks in advance.

Thanx for such qucik reply!!! The pages were great, it had an answer for my problem, but unfortunately it also involved me dealing with it only on the MacIntosh HD itself, not on mounted external drive I suppose... So it didn't work they say that there is an icon in the left corner indicating locked folder - I don't see any icon on it. It says you can untick the box to unlock the folder - there is no tick to be unticked. Finally, they say that if I don't have permition or rights I cannot delete it. But how do i change permittion which already says that i can read and write in it? So everything appears to be normal only I cannot delete it. there is not even any warnig telling me I don't have enough rights, it just requires the password and after me typing it in it makes the sound of scraping paper but does nothing more. I aslo had some problems with emptying Trash after being seemingly succesful with one file and had got so far to have them appear in the Trash (no clue how this one actully got there though..) I followd the advice and emptied the Trash with Terminal. The Folder is still there but it shows 0 Kb... So far so good BUT: It is still on the external drive, so I obviously only managed to copy it into the Trash!!! Phew, innit a bit too tight to poor owners, this macbook?? I want my rights back!

This is my first request for help.
My CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized and when I go to Device Manager and click on CD/DVD I am informed that the file cdrom.sys is there but cannot be loaded.
An error number 39 is reported.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated but please keep it simple to one line actions if possible.

There error code 39 is very common issue and can be solved easy;

So firstly remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
Then access the registry using the regedit command and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Reboot the notebook and wait till the CD/DVD drive was installed again.

External Hard Drive error code -50

After I boot my iMac, my USB external drive mounts and functions as normal. After the computer has been left alone for a period of time (most notably, overnight) the drive still appears mounted on the desktop, I can read it, but attempting to write to it (or simply trying to create a new folder) reports back:
"The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
Logging out of the user does not fix it. I have to restart the computer to get the ability to write to the drive. Any ideas?

My computer never sleeps, just powers the screen down. I can't eject the drive because it claims it is in use. I can't repair permissions (the options to verify or repair are both greyed out, and the information screen in Disk Utility states "Can Repair Permissions: No").
I have multiple drives in an external enclosure connected by USB (it is a Century EX35SW8_SB8-E). Oddly, I noticed that only one drive had the "Owners Enabled" set to "Yes", so I changed the permissions on the other drives to match, but that did not change anything.

Why can't I copy files from my external hard drive - error code -50.

I sm trying to back up an external hard drive to a network drive. Some files copy but not all;. SOmetimes a folder seems to have copied but then I see that most of the files inside have not. And sometimes I just get 'An unexpected error has occurred'. Error code - 50.
I need to have a back up copy of the files on this hard drive. How can I stop this happening and copy files properly and securely?
The external hard drive is a LaCie bought from Apple, share formatted FAT32.
The network drive is a WD MyBookLIve Duo which WD tell me should work equally well with any operating system.

You could try downloading and installing 7-Zip (free) and downloading a fresh copy of the iTunes installer, unpack the installer into its components using 7-Zip then try installing AppleApplicationSupport again. It may still fail to install but you may get more useful error messages as to why not.

Macbook Pro Retina & Mediasonic ProRAID USB 3 issue - Error Code -50

Hi everyone,
I have a Mediasonic ProRAID 4-bay container (model HFR2-SU3S2) connected to my new Macbook Pro Retina via USB 3.0 (using the replacement pc board supplied by Mediasonic that provides true USB 3 speeds for supported apple devices). It is currently connected through a USB 3 hub but the same issue occurred when I had it directly connected to the laptop.
I've noticed that when the laptop display goes to sleep (beyond the screen saver), when I return to do work and wake the display (a Dell 3011 30" connected using the apple dual link mini display adapter), the drive is mounted and I can browse the folder structure without a problem.
However, whenever I do anything to write to the volume, like to create a folder, I get 'Error Code -50', preventing me from writing. Similarly, if I try to work on an image stored on this volume from within Adobe Lightroom, for example, I get Write error messages as well.
I've found that the only short term fix is to unmount and powercycle the RAID box. Are there any other remedies that I can look into? I have my Macbook Pro configured to NOT spin down any hard drives nor does it go to sleep (other than the display) when connected to AC power.

IMO, I'd return it for a refund and BTO the 15.4" MB Pro without retina.

Cant copy from External Drive get error Code 50

I have a Mac Pro and suddenly it won't copy files from any external drive, or write them either. The drives mount and show up in fiinder, and they start copying, but after about 30 seconds they error out with "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 50).
It has done this on two different Mac Pros and 3 different external drives. I don't remember this haqppening before. I have Paragon NTFS running on both Macs and they have worked flawlessly for maqny months but now they won't complete. Any help would be appriciated.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. You'll only be able to read, not write, an NTFS volume. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

Custom WebAuth Issues "Error Code 1"

Hi All,
Being experimenting in the Custom Webauth uploads. The main problem I have is my company does not want to issue a username/password to each vistor so we just have a static credentials that change weekly. In the custom webauth this mean error code 1 is issued by the controller "the user is already logged in" Go Figure! All browsers apart from IE ignore this and redirect as normal. IE being the pain it is displays the message but does not redirect. This means the user goes into a constant login loop trying over and over again. But in fact they have already authenitcate and all they need do is browse away from the login.
Does anyone know how I can ignore error code 1 all together. Its funny the built in page doesn't even care about this and when I captured that and uploaded the failed login script stopped working. I guess different error codes are used when using a custom webauth.
Think Cisco need to update the templates anyway for the latest browsers.

I'm not sure if this would help, but could you use this command to stop the checks for multiple logins and hopefully not generate the error code? From the 7.0 config guide:
"config advanced eap max-login-ignore-identity-response {enable | disable}—When enabled, this command limits the number of devices that can be connected to the controller with the same username. You can log in up to eight times from different devices (PDA, laptop, IP phone, and so on) on the same controller. The default value is enabled."

N95 OSX Multimedia Transfer Issue error code 208

Hi I have the latest download of Multimedia Transfer (1.3) and my OSX is 10.4.11 every time I try to transfer files I get the error code 208 device refused the operation. This is very frustrating, this is my send N95 8gb and just after I uploaded my contacts into this one nearly all calls & texts come through with just the number & no identity.
I did not have either problem with my previous N95, can anyone assist please?

on phone, open music player. click options -> refresh library. wait a long, long time. 3.8GB will take a while. during this process you'll see a count of songs found.
you can't close music player while this happens, and it is a much longer wait than you might expect - so be sure you don't need to do anything with your phone for at least 30 minutes. put it on a charger if you can, it's a lot of sdcard access which is a power hog.
once this is done, the phone has an internal database of music - much like the Library.xml file in iTunes. just like itunes, copying music into the music folder doesn't make it show up in the music player - you must tell itunes to import the music into the library database. but after this painful period of waiting... the music player works very nicely and you only have to do this again if you add or remove music.

Thats pretty much the jist of it. Im no computer wiz and all of the instructions for how to solve this problem are over my head. I don't know how to enter my start up library to delete certain files. Please help.

photoshop elements 8 - came with my wacom tablet back in 2011. And My new computer has os X yosemite - it was working on my macbook which had recently updated to OS X, but Im receiving error code 150:30 licensing has stopped working messages. Secondly when i downloaded the service pack 1 separetly and installed, it got installed without any err.
Basic trouble shooting i have done like
1>reset windows update component
2>Clean boot up option also

I would like to suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:
1.
Stop the Windows Update service temporarily.
2.
Run the following commands to rename the SoftwareDistribution directory.

WRT54GS VPN Connection Issues: Error code 87

Hello experts,
I have unsuccessfully tried to help my wife connect her XP laptop to her work VPN over our home wi-fi network. I have a WRT54GS v.4 router with the latest firmware, WPA2 encryption. It connects to the VPN just fine but is unable to ping any internal IP addresses and I get the following log message everytime.

I have tried the following troubleshooting tasks:
a) Plugged her laptop directly to the cable modem >> Works like a charm which makes me think it has got to be a router issue.
b) Reset to factory defaults, tried running it without any encryption, tried running it in DMZ mode >> No joy, still get the same above error message in the VPN log.
c) Opened up ports 500 and 1723 for TCP/IP and UDP with her laptop's IP address >> Still no luck.
All passthrough options are enabled for VPN in the router's config interface. I have also tried disabling the router's firewall.
I am at my wit's end here guys. Is it possible that the WRT54GS isn't VPN friendly (although it seems very unlikely) and I just have to get another router? Any help is appreciated.

No, I wasn't trying to ping my router from the VPN connection, I was trying to ping the VPN host server at the office for troubleshooting purposes and the request times out everytime. I am still getting the error message in the log "AddRoute failed to add a route: code 87". I disabled "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" like you said but it didn't make any difference. I am able to ping the computer's IP address assigned by the VPN but I can't ping the host server or anything else.
It's basically connecting to the VPN but not connecting as in I can't do anything on the VPN like access local folders or run a specific software called eClinicalWorks which works fine from the office.
If I plug the laptop directly to the cable modem, I don't get that error message in the VPN client's log anymore and everything works fine.

Equium L300 - CD/DVD drive issue - error Code 39

This message is appearing in the device manager under CD/DVD ROM Drives for my laptop and is not running any cd's/dvd's.
I don't know much about my operating system or laptop in general other than that it's a Toshiba Equium L300 running on Vista Home Premium
Can anyone help me with this problem please?

Thanks for the help and advice but after deleting the mentioned registry keys the problem still seems to be there, no cd/dvd is available and in the device manager the CD/DVDW SD-L622A ATA Device is still showing the same error
