External HD kills power to AEBS

Hi again all,
Well my Airport Extreme (802.11n) has been shutting off when I try to access my 1Tb external HD which is connected to the AEBS via USB A-B cable. This just started last night. My solution is to shut off my external HD, unplug the power cable in the back of the AEBS for a few seconds, then plug it back in, then wait for the AEBS to reboot itself. If I try to turn the external HD it immediately shut the AEBS off. The light goes out and all our laptops are offline. Anyone know anything about this? Apple, are you reading this?
Cheers,
Iain

It's always a good idea to use a powered hub, even if the drive has it's own power supply. The port on the AEBS does not supply enough current for some drives and this may be the case with yours.
It would be a good idea to have the AEBS checked out for proper operation first, as there may be a problem with USB port. If everything checks out OK, then go with a powered hub to keep the stress off of the USB port on the AEBS.

  • U400 killing power cords

My u400 is killing power cords.  It's killed 3 in the last 3 days.  I've tried different outlets, used surge protectors.  But every time I get a new one it charges for a bit, then stops - and when I have the power cord tested it is dead.  What's wrong?

    Dear kmoore
    Welcome to Lenovo Forums
From where did you purchase the machine , and why you need to use surge protectors
if you did purchase it from US i advicce you to contact the Service Centers in order to this issue will be sorted there

  • External drive sleep issues with AEBS.....

I have a WD My Passport Studio drive, which works fine when I plug it into the USB port of my router to access over the wireless network (Apple Airport Extreme). It takes power directly from the USB port. No problems whatsoever.
If I plug my WD My Book Studio II drive (which is a 3.5" so has its own external power) into the USB port on the same router, I can access it over the wireless fine. But after a while of non-use it goes to sleep. Waking it up from sleep over the wireless connection then takes so long that I need to just unplug it and plug it back into the USB port again!
Is there any way I can stop it from going into its power save / sleep mode when used with the AEBS?

When I check my e-mail with my iPhone in the morning, there are no messages there, because when I wake up the Mini the next morning, it has already downloaded messages I received overnight. I can tell the computer was not actually awake, because no Time Machine backups had been done since I put it to sleep the night before.
I found other threads referring to Lacie drives not spinning down, so I'm assuming that's a problem with the drive, not with Lion trying to access the drive while the computer is asleep.

  • Can i make an external button to power up the computer using wake up on lan?

With the feature of Wake up on Lan I am assuming that the computer can be shutdown completly but via wake up on Lan?
If this is the case I have my mac pro hidden from sight but obviously need to turn the computer still.
I do not want to use the Sleep modes nor use schedules.
Can I take an ethernet cable and plug something on the end to then power it up? (I don't want to put another computer on the end of that ethernet cable though).
I'm open to suggestions as to how I could make and external power on button. Any USB buttons i could use to power on? Or could I get to the power switch of the mac and connect up another button? Isn't there 2 pins in the machine that an repair agent would use to turn it on without using the button?
Hope i can get a good tidy solution to this.
    Many Thanks

You have found the answer. If the video chipset is OK but there is a fault in the internal display or its cabing, an external monitor will work. However, if the video chipset--which is farther "upstream" in the system--goes bad, the option of an external monitor is off the table.

  • External Hard Drive connected to AEBS does not auto mount

Just upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5. I have a AEBS running 5.3.2 airport utility with a LaCie HD connected to it.
In Tiger, my external hard drive would auto mount onto the desktop every time the computer turned on or woke up from sleeping etc.
In Leopard, my external drive will not auto mount. It does not show up in the sidebar under devices. It does not show up in the disk utility. To access it, I have to go the the finder sidebar, select my AEBS under shared, then select my HD. Also, I did check show connected servers and external disk on the desktop in the finder preferences. Also, not sure if this matters but the icon on my external drive on my desktop is the blue drive with three people holding hands and not the brighter blue one with the wireless signal logo.
In tiger my external HD basically acted like any other folder that was always there and not like a networked drive that I had to go and connect to. I want to go back to that. I heard this has to do with leopord no longer having the airdisk utility??
    thanks

Try making an alias of one of the top-level folders in your external (AEBS-connected) drive, drag it to the desktop, and then put it in your Login Items.
    --> System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items
You can simply drag the folder alias into the Login Items window.
When you next log in, the folder will be automatically opened. Alas, it doesn't give you instant access to the entire external drive, but you can back out a level to see the entire drive. It isn't quite what you had with Tiger, but perhaps it will suffice.
If you leave the aliased folder on your desktop, you have a skinny approximation to the mounted volume that you had with Tiger.

  • Horrible Noise from PB17 with external units drawing power from FW.

With external boxes that draw power from the firewire bus (Audio interfaces/SSL Duende etc.),
my powerbook makes a terrible sort of digital whine.
(actually it sounds a bit like cassette based program loading on old 8-bit computers (e.g. ZX Spectrum)).
The noise is coming from under the rear left of the keyboard.
I'm convinced it's something to do with power draw as it only happens with boxes that take their power from FW.
Sorry if this is a repeat question. I did a really long search, but only got a couple of allusions to this.
Thanks again in advance for any help.

  • Best bootable external HD for Power PC iMac

Hey guys, first post. I'm looking to purchase an external hard drive, preferably a 1 TB one that I can set up in RAID 1 format, as well as be able to boot from. I was about to buy a WD My Book Studio Edition II, but then realized I wouldn't be able to boot from that as I have a Power PC. Any suggestions? I'd really like some suggestions for RAID 1 AND bootable, but if that's getting too specific, RAID 1 isn't necessarily a deal breaker.
Another problem I may run into is that I'm looking to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard soon, to take advantage of Time Machine, among other things. What's the best way to go about backing up data when an OS update is on the horizon? Back up with Tiger, do a clean install of Leopard, and then boot from the external? Then wipe the drive clean and set up Time Machine?
By the way, is the option to boot from my external HD of critical importance? If I have my hard drive cloned on there, and my system crashes, what are the options that I have if all the information is on the external drive, but it is non bootable?
Ahhhh, so confused. Sorry I have so many almost-unrelated questions, but I'm not really sure what I should be buying and what I should be doing with it. Basically, I want to upgrade to Leopard, not lose anything in the process, and then have everything backed up. Hope someone out there can help.

You can buy single drives that are 1TB externals, so I would not go with a dual drive external just to get a RAID. A single drive is more reliable than a RAID (as long as you back it up) and RAIDs still need to be backed up. Any speed advantages will not be worthwhile, since your iMac G5 and FireWire 400 ports will be not be able to take advantage of the RAID.
Any FireWire external drive should be bootable for your iMac. If you want to future-proof a bit, you can get a FireWire 800 drive and use a 800 to 400 adapter (or an 800 to 400 cable). And there are drives that have FireWire and USB 2.0, for better flexibility down the road.
OWC (macsales.com) has good external drives. If you want to build-your-own to get the exact drive mechanism you want at the price you want to pay, OWC sells most of their drive enclosures empty.
Another problem I may run into is that I'm looking to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard soon...
I think the best (in my opinion) way is to first clone the internal drive to a FireWire external drive. Then test boot from that external drive to ensure it works properly. That clone is your backup. While booted from the external, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk+ (not +Repair Disk Permissions+ ) on the internal drive; make sure there are no errors, or any errors are reported as being repaired.
Start up from the Leopard installation disc. Select to do an +Archive and Install+ option installation. You can do so by clicking the Options button. An +Archive and Install+ will give you a fresh Leopard system (instead of installing Leopard over your Tiger system), but retain your user accounts and settings. So your data and settings should be there when you boot Leopard, but in case something bad happens, your external clone is your backup. Make sure the internal drive is selected as the installation target and proceed. Installer will put the old system components into a folder called +Previous Systems+. After ensuring you do not need anything from the old system, you can delete that folder to free up space. After you start up into Leopard and go through the setup screens, be sure to run Software Update a few times to pick up all the updates. Then, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
If something goes wrong, or you want to revert back the old system, start up from the external with your clone. Then clone the clone back to the internal drive. You should have your old system back, as it was before the Leopard upgrade.
Also, if the +Archive and Install+ option does not produce good results for some reason and you want to do an +Erase and Install+ (install Leopard onto a newly formatted volume), you can do so and use your clone as the source for migration of your personal data.
By the way, is the option to boot from my external HD of critical importance?
If you use Time Machine after upgrading to Leopard, you will be able to re-create your internal volume to within one hour of internal drive failure. You do so by booting off the Leopard installation disc, then selecting the command to restore the volume from Time Machine (I forget the exact wording) from the Utilities menu (go up to the menu bar at the first Installer screen). You can also run Disk Utility from the same menu, and run repairs on the internal drive.
So while it is nice to be able to boot from the external FireWire drive, it is not critical. I use an old FireWire-based iPod with a failed screen as my emergency/maintenance boot drive. My FireWire external drive can be made bootable, but I don't have any system installed on it. It's basically my personal data drive. If I did not have that iPod boot drive, I would definitely have some external drive that I can boot from for maintenance and emergencies.

  • External Firewire drives power up, but won't mount.

I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem. I recently upgraded my mom's laptop to OSX Lion after she experienced a lot of problems with Snow Leopard. All updates available from Software Update have been installed. Now 2 issues have arisen after the new install: 1) the FW 800 and 400 ports appear to be non-functional, and 2) the OS takes about 10 minutes to boot up to the desktop.
    1) Regarding the FW ports: I have a couple external Firewire 800 hard drives that I use on other Macs so I know they're fully operational and mount without any issues. They're both 5400RPM drives that have been inserted into Macally external enclosures, and are of different capacities - one is 320GB and the other is 500GB. The enclosures offer FW 800, 400, USB 2.0 and mini-USB connectivity. But after upgrading the laptop I mentioned, neither of the drives will mount when using the FW 800 or 400 cables. They power up but won't mount, and they don't show up in the list in Disk Utility. However, the drives will power up and mount via USB.
I realize the laptop may have a hardware/port problem - but both 800 and 400 ports? Seems unlikely.
    2) Any idea why it's taking the OS 10 minutes to boot up? I've shut down the laptop and rebooted it twice since the OS install, and both times took 10 minutes.
I may just install Lion on one of the hard drives, pull it and then pop it into the laptop to see if that makes any difference. Before I do that, can anyone recommend a hardware utility that can check the ports?
    I welcome your suggestions.
    Thank you.

  • External Hard Drive Power Stays On

Hi -- I have an external hard drive (La Cie Little Disk) which is connected to my iMac via Firewire only, with no external power source. I noticed that the power on the disk stays on (as shown by a little blue light and by the warmth of the drive) AFTER the iMac is shut down for the night. It was still on in the morning. How is this possible? Also, could this cause any problems?

    1. Because the computer was designed that way. Click here for more information.
    2. No, as long as the drive has spun down.

  • Moving external time machine backup to AEBS

I've been backing up my mac to an external drive for a while. Recently I just got an AEBS and I want to move that drive to the base station. This works fine, but time machine on my mac no longer recognizes it's backups. How to you migrate you backup to the base station without deleting your old backups and starting over?

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move any old TM backups (HDD connected directly to the Mac) to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • MacBook Pro won't stay awake with external display AND power connected

I've been using my MacBook Pro with an external 23" Apple display for several months, always with the lid closed and with no problems. Suddenly, I can no longer keep the MacBook awake when its lid is closed. *The AC power IS connected.* I plug in the display, close the lid, wake the system with my external keyboard, but then it will quickly go to sleep again after a few seconds. No matter what I've tried I get the same behavior.
Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not, I installed the Leopard graphics update a few weeks ago. Could this be a cause?

Apple did actually acknowledge this as a known issue with people running 10.5.2 with the graphics update, and are investigating it. There's some further discussion at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394449&tstart=0
Anyway, what worked for me was powering down, connecting my external display, keyboard, etc., powering up, and immediately closing the lid. It seems to behave better now, though I haven't rebooted since, although I have switched back and forth between running with the external display, and running without it, without any problems.

  • Does a replacement charger run the risk of killing power supply

I have an ibook g4 and i just had to buy a new battery but it won't charge...the old one wasn't charging at all, and the new one won't either...i had to buy a replacement charger a few years ago, then about 4 months after that the computer stopped working.  When i brought it to get fixed, the man had an original charger and said the computer worked fine when plugged into that, but he never used the charger i supplied...should i ebay an actual charger that goes with it? the computer works fine except this power supply problem, first it would shut off after a day, then it would only last an hour, then 20 minutes, then sometimes only work when the battery was out and charger plugged in.  now it won't even do that...HELP lol, i don't wanna get rid of this computer!(i use a mac mini now, but want my laptop back)

Have you tried resetting the PMU?
The PMU (Power Management Unit) controls the charging function, so resetting it may help.

    Turn off monitor.
    All ok.
    PROBLEM states:
    • Monitor connected and ON, next to macbook in bootcamp win7.
    • Monitor connected, ON, and 5ft away from computer in bootcamp win7. (no proximity)
    • Monitor connected, ON, and connected to 2nd laptop VGA, display set to macbook so it outputs the macbook in bootcamp win7. (connection)
    NOT Problem states:
    • Monitor connected and OFF.
    • Monitor ON and not connected. (proximity)
    • Monitor On, and connected to 2nd laptop on VGA in same location. (proximity)
    • Monitor connected, ON, and connected to 2nd laptop VGA, display set to VGA so it outputs the 2nd laptop. (proximity+connection)
    • LAN connected, any test.
    • In Mac OSX, no problem.
So problem state is when the macbook is in NVidia mode, connected and using external monitor in Bootcamp Win7 over the wireless network. Proximity has no effect. Connection, unused has no effect. No wired LAN problem.
I found some posts from 2007 about OSX having this issue, no one got beyond “it must be the monitor is too close and interfering with wireless”
I would have to say driver issue if OSX is ok, and bootcamp is not. Swapping drivers with Bootcamp drivers, win drivers, no joy.
    Ideas?

Wow, I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I've been having really bad wifi troubles only in Windows (7 64-bit Ultimate, specifically), and after looking all over the place I happened upon this post. I immediately unplugged the monitor and voila, the signal improved instantly and dramatically. I ran several tests with the monitor unplugged and plugged, and I can confirm that the monitor is definitely the culprit. I'm also using the DVI adapter from Monoprice. Thank you for this post, time to cancel my order for a new router. I would have NEVER thought to try unplugging/plugging my external monitor (also a Dell, incidentally).
    Technical details:
    1. Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter from Monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=5106&seq=1&format=2
    2. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (problem doesn't occur in Mac OS).
    3. MacBook Pro 13", newest model.
    4. Dell S2409W monitor.

  • [T430s] Small ripple on external monitor when power adapter plugged in

If I unplug adapter, external monitor picture is fine. But if it is plugged in, I can see small ripples on the screen.
    How can I fix it?
    Thank you.

Yes, the charging stops but the battery goes into a state that never discharges, which interferes with its life. This is what the Apple support said. Actually several of them confirmed that having it plugged in all the times will affect the battery life. They said to unplug it and let it discharge completely once a week to allow a full cycle to cycle to occur.
As you can tell, there is mixed information. They say one thing in an article and another on the phone. There is also a lot of opinion. The complete understanding will happen only when time passes with the computer constantly plugged in.
I speak from experience of having my older Macbook Pro plugged in for 7 years. I got the same story from Apple (battery stops charging - no harm done) Right. The battery overheats, it bulges, it presses on the chips inside and the mac goes crazy. Also the battery life goes down to only about 20 minutes after a year of  being plugged in. This new Macbook Pro may have a better battery technology and electronics but they were saying the same thing back than. The difference was that with the old Macbook Pro my battery replacement cost me $60 and it took me 10 seconds to exchange it. This time battery replacement will cost me $200 and will have to part with the computer for 4 days to have it replaced. And how often will I have to do that? I guess I will follow up on this discussion in a year to let you know the outcome.
I hope I was clear in expressing my concern.

  • T410 external monitor kills mouse/keyboard with dock

    WinXP with SP3.
Hi there!  I'm trying to use an external monitor.  I also have a usb mouse and usb keyboard connected to the dock,  When the external monitor is connected I have have keyboard and mouse function both external and on the laptop.  I also have display on the external monitor.  Once I boot windows, I loose function of the mouse and keyboard both externally and on the laptop.  It's driving me nuts!!  Any ideas??
If I just boot at the dock with only the monitor plugged in, I loose the mouse/keyboard on the laptop.  Using the VGA plug.
Any help would be so grand!

I've tried 3 different mice and keyboards. The issue presents even if I just plug the monitor into the laptop without the dock either vga or div-x. The dock is a series 3 mini.
