External HD not detected in MacBook but iBook

Hi All:
I have below systems with me >
* iBook G4 running Tiger with 1GB memory
* Previous MacBook running Tiger with 2GB memory
* New MacBook running Leopard with 4GB memory
* New iMac running Leopard with 4GB memory
I have a 100GB external HD connected to my iBook for 2 years now, via USB. And my Previous MacBook used to read and access data from the same HD too. I dunno if I have changed any setting or any software update technically forbid the access from any other Mac systems except iBook, which I bought with.
In iBook, the external HD works perfectly. I eject it, connect it to any of my MacBook now, the light on the device is turned on but nothing moves in Finder. There's no icon, unlike in iBook where a USB HD icon appears below Macintosh HD. I tried to partition and erase everything, remain Mac OS (Journaled) format, but no luck. It's properly detected and accessible by iBook but not any others.
Have I possible changed anything without knowing it ? Can someone share with me what to do next ? The external HD works well but I dun understand why none of other Mac systems recognise it, except the original iBook. Thank you.

Hi:
I am using a 100GB from Samsung. Should have mentioned earlier. It's USB-powered. I never use it with any adapter. I just plug it into iBook G4 and in less than 2 seconds time, drive pops up in Finder perfectly.
However with MacBook running either Leopard or Tiger, the light will be on and you hear it spinning. I tried to plug in adapter last night, still no luck.
I re-partitioned to GUID or Master Boot or Apple, either Mac Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS, none of them works.
Then, last night I tried to boot-camp Windows XP and to my surprise, it was detected without any problem ! Oh...... So now I think the problem is not in USB port, not in the power adapter (which I never use), not in the format, it's in Tiger or Leopard for MacBook.
Tiger I use on iBook G4 is 10.4.11 (no problem at all)
Tiger I use on MacBook is also 10.4.11 (not detected but light is on)
Leopard I use on MacBook is 10.5.2 (not detected but light is on)
I spent so much time transfer data from external HD to iBook then to iPod then to MacBook. I just dun understand. Thank you for all your posts. ^_^

  • External hardrive not workon on MacBook Pro

I own a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex that is 1TB and have had it for about 3 or 4 years. I used to be able to plug it in and with ease insert files (pictures, music, documents, etc .. basically everything in case my MacBook stops functioning.)
Back in May, I took my external hardrive to my University before I graduated and I could not insert some video files (using another computer, which was a Mac.) Our school's tech expert said it was because my external hardrive is not applicable with Macs. Long story short, I showed him I can do it on my MacBook Pro, then I had to save my video files on a flash drive instead. Anyway.
I want to back up everything incase the MacBook stops working soon (it's six years old.) However, when I put in my external hardrive, I can't change the name of files/folders in the external hardrive nor can I insert anything into the hardrive. Oddly enough, I can drag stuff into my desktop and it will copy a file into my desktop while the same file still stays on my hardrive.
My MacBook Pro is Version 10.9.5 (if it matters) and I have more than 90 GB of free space on my MacBook and have nearly 700 GB of free space on my external hardrive and obviously I'd like to use that. Also, I'd like to use my external hardrive not just on Macs, but all machines in case I need to save large files. I used to be able to do this at one point, especially with a previously owned hardrive (it was Western Digital.)
Anyway, that's all the info. All help would be greatly appreciated.

I meant to also say that your school's tech expert does not appear to be much of an expert.

  • External monitor not detected on Thinkpad W530 intel-virtual-output

I'm having problems with connecting my ThinkPad W530 to external monitors since a few months. I'm using NVIDIA Optimus and bumblebee/optirun since the VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are only wired to the NVIDIA card om this laptop. For a long time I have executed:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
Then I have started the Screens GUI tool in Gnome to setup the placement of the external screen but now the external screen is not present in the GUI tool and xrandr gives me:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
    LVDS1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm
    1920x1080 60.00*+ 50.00
    1400x1050 59.98
    1280x1024 60.02
    1280x960 60.00
    1024x768 60.00
    800x600 60.32 56.25
    640x480 59.94
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
If I select "Discrete mode" and select startup screen as VGA in the BIOS the BIOS and the Grub screens shows on the external monitor but the screen locks on the screen that shows that the system is booting with the linux-ck kernel. This has never worked for me in Arch Linux so that is no surprise. In Ubuntu everything everything worked fine the last time I tried.
How can I debug this? Why is the external screen not detected any more?

Thanks, I am not sure exactly how to read the logs but I cannot find anything that is obviously wrong
Below is my log with an external screen connected via Mini DisplayPort and after running:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
a few times, no more logs seem to be added when I connect/disconnect the monitor or when I run the above two commands more times.

You really have to mess with the resoluton, espescially the refresh rate, as it varies from projector to projector, monitor to monitor. Even within the same brand! Because so many manufacturers are trying so many different things to become the next cool kid on the block, and the way the formats are being configured that's now part of the game.
That's why so many professionally produced corporate shows hire a dedicated projectionist for the video presentations. Too many bugs in the honey.
Refresh & sesolution are the first things to look at.
Just so you know that colors in PowerPoint PC, and PowerPoint Mac, don't exactly match... go figure.
I forgot to mention another thing, sometimes it's the projector that needs to be tweaked.

  • Macbook air not detecting home wifi but detecting all other networks in vicinity. Other devices are able to connect to home network.

I have had this problem since yesterday. My macbook air is not detecting the home wifi network it used to be connected to. A manual addition of the network is also not working. I also tried using network utility which gives the details of all networks available and their details, but the home network does not feature there.
However, my iPhone is able to connect to the home wifi without a glitch. I am right now using a mobile data card to access internet, but need to get back to the home network.
I found various users posting the same problem online, but am yet to find a conclusive problem. Here are two threads on apple support which are similar to my case.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2445976?threadID=2445976
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10695921?messageID=10695921&start=1#106959 21?messageID=10695921&start=1
    Please help!

It was not working for me either and I spent a day looking at things other people did when they had similar problems. Never could find a conclusive response and what has been suggested here was always almost the only thing mentioned. I wish you luck and hopefully someone can actually point out the one true thing that is doing this!
This is the exact sequence of events: I switched off the main supply to the house when I was going out, and when I came back this problem occurred. I was searching desperately online and just when I had given up, I decided to switch mains off and then back on. It picked up the wifi, and has been working since. This was a shocker and mostly a coincidence. Wont hurt to try.

  • External Display not working with MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011)

I just bought the current MacBook Pro 13" (i7 processor). My external display (Benq 20"W, 1600x1050) always says "No Signal Detected!". I've tried it with a DVI-Adapter (Griffin Video Display Converter) and with a VGA-Adapter (LMP Mini DisplayPort-VGA-Adapter). With lower resolution I once got a picture (but with weird lines). On my old MacBook (white, 2.16 Ghz) there was never a problem with this display (also OS X 10.6.6). Who can help?

Check this post if you want more info:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2774718
The gist is that DVI is currently very iffy through Thunderbolt. Mini display -> mini display OR mini display -> HDMI should work fine. It's most likely not your adapter itself but the fact that it's DVI.
If you can, get a mini display -> HDMI adapter and try that (assuming your external has HDMI).
I should hear back tomorrow or Monday from apple engineers with more specific info about this issue and I will update then.
BTW- DVI anywhere in the chain will make things fail. Mini Display -> DVI and a DVI/HDMI cable won't work with any reliability (I've tested it on three completely different monitors).

  • External Hdd not detected

    Hi guys,
I've got this issue where my Macbook Air cannot detect my external hdd (not showing up on disk utility), where as my Mac Mini can. I assume it's a software issue. Both are running OSX Mavericks (Latest edition) and there is nothing wrong with my USB port in the Air (detects my mouse, flash drive etc.).
The hdds' LED no longer flashes when plugged in the Air but functions fine when plugged in the Mac Mini.
Is there any manual reset command (through Terminal) or setting in the Macbook Air without having to factory reset?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If the hard drive is bus powered (it doesn't have an independent power supply) the MBA may not be supplying enough power to the drive. This isn't an uncommon problem. I have a cheap external at work with this problem which I solved by plugging it into a powered USB hub instead of directly into the computer. Had that not worked I'd have tried finding an external power supply for the drive - or junking the enclosure.

  • External  drive not detected

    Hi,
Just transferred from a macbook 2008 to a brand new mac mini 2014.
My backup was on an external drive, but when it's plugged to the mac mini, its not detected, but it is on my macbook ....
    what can I do ?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • External HD not detected

Hi, my dog ate the original power cable that came with Touro Desk 2TB (external HD). I had to buy another power cable, but this time was a generic. The external HD is turning on fine, but iMac is not detecting it. I hope it's because of the new power cable. I only can see some of the external HD information on System Information:
    Touro Desk 3.0:
      Product ID:          0x1015
      Vendor ID:          0x4971
      Version:           0.00
      Serial Number:          31001206210000000000
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          HitachiGST
      Location ID:          0xfa130000 / 6
      Current Available (mA):          500
      Current Required (mA):          8
Is current available and required mA confirming my thoughts? Please help! My life depends on this. Thanks in advance!!
    My iMac information:
      Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac12,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:          2.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          16 GB
      SMC Version (system):          1.71f22
      System Version:          Mac OS X 10.7.5 (11G63)
      Kernel Version:          Darwin 11.4.2

Now that that thing is fixed, another problem rises...
I formatted the HD in a HFS+ partition and wanted to use the other half of the HD as an NTFS partition for my PC.
So I used the Disk Utility to create a NTFS-3G partition, but that partition didn't appear on my PC, so I wanted to format that partition to an NTFS partition, but I kept getting an error: Not enough disk space on the device to complete the partitioning. (I translated the error from Dutch).
Tha strange thing is that the new NTFS-3G partition is completely empty.

  • VGA over RGBHV, external display not detected

    Hi guys,
I have a presentation to make in a couple of days' time on my Macbook, but while at the venue testing the projector, I encountered a problem.
At the lectern, the VGA input is not in the form of the normal DB15 VGA connector, but RGBHV - so the cable that the technician there provides is a VGA connector - 5x BNC connectors (for RGBHV) cable. After plugging the VGA end into my Mini DVI-VGA adapter, my macbook doesn't detect the display. I understand that EDID/DDC2 relies on some other pins on the VGA cable to transmit the data.
So, any ideas on how to get my macbook to detect the display and activate the video output? Running a VGA cable straight to the projector is not an option as it's mounted way too high for that.
    Cheers,
    -cflee

I think the only way to do this is to spoof a monitor connection using a hardware dongle that transmits EDID. This thing should work.

Hope you have time to order and receive it in time for your presentation. Good luck.

  • T61 and the Intel Graphics Card error - external monitor not detected

T61 with Vista 32 bit, Mobile Intel® GM965 Express Chipset and an Advanced Mini Dock.
I am trying to use the DVI port and an external monitor. The driver does not detect the external monitor.
Uninstalling the Intel driver the Generic profile will work on the external monitor, but is overly fuzzy, how do I get the T61 to recognize my external monitor with the right drivers?
I am currently running the Intel Driver Ver. - 7.14.10.1329, which provides the message under Multiple Display:
Two displays must be connected to the computer before you can use this feature. Please connect another display.
Of course my 22" monitor is connected.  That is the frustrating part.  I have also uninstalled Presentation Director, just in case, but then re-installed after it seemed that wasn't the problem.
There is a newer driver from Intel but it is not Lenovo approved yet I guess. Though I highly doubt this is the problem. What can I do?
    ~~
I did post a thread on the thinkpads.com too, but so far haven't had any luck.

Well the new dock came but didn't fix the problem.  Now my nice new T61 is packed up in a depot box, waiting for DHL to come pick it up.
dkaufman1 -- I guess we do have different problems.  If I set my T61 to display to the DVI port in the bios I get a blank screens on both the DVI connectd monitor and the laptop screen until the OS boots when I have the laptop in the dock.  The only way I can see the bios screen to set it back to the ThinkPad LCD setting is to boot it disconnected from the dock.
I really hope that this problem is resolved, as I really like the T61 otherwise.  I was even using it with the VGA cable connected to my 22" monitor, but it was pretty hard to take.   I'm now back to my old desktop hooked up to the same monitor via DVI and it is quite the relief, even if it isn't as zippy as the T61.

  • Benq MP771 projector does not detect my Macbook???

    hello,
i recently purchased a benq mp771 short throw projector to use with my Macbook (2007). I had been told by the manufacturers that it is not compatible with macbook pros but works with macbooks. I was using osx 10.4 and had no problems using the projector. My hard drive crashed and after replacement it came with osx 10.5. I'm now running with 10.5.8. I have recently tried using the projector with my macbook but it seems unable to detect the laptop. My computer detects the projector no problem. I'm running a DVI to VGA input. It appears that the system upgrade may have made my computer undetectable. I wondered if anyone could offer any possible solutions other than downgrading the osx.
    cheers

How are the to computer connected?
Do y have any idea as to what the 157 kb is since yo say it can'g find the startup disk.
Does the MacBook Pro work OK?
Do you have File vault on?

  • PX1268E 400GB External HD not detected

    hi all
I purchased a Toshiba 400GB External USB Hard Drive from DABS it shipped without a CD Rom. I've plugged the USB cable into the computer but it has not detected the drive, even after re-starts or trying alternative USB slots. Not even displayed in Device Manager. I probably need this CD to complete the instal yes ? Can I download the installation file from here ?
    Any info/advice gratefully received.
    cheers

    Hi
Im not sure if this external HDD needs an additional installation CD but everything should be shipped together with the HDD box!!!
In my knowledge such HDD needs external power supply. The cable should be delivered also together with this HDD.
So take your HDD manual and check all shipped parts! If something is missing contact you HDD dealer!
Ps; the CD cannot be downloaded from the net!

  • MyBook external HD not detected

I wanted to take my iBook with me, so I put the MyBook (Western Digital hard drive) icon in the trash before unplugged the hard drive from the USB drive.
Now when I plug the hard drive into the USB port my iBook does not detect the drive. What can I do so that my computer will detect the hard drive?

NO such thing as a Buffalo HD, contains a Seagate HD inside the box.
verify on another Mac if same, likely this very common issue, read about same here:
    SATA card failure:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
