External HD not recognized after Formatting & Running time Machine.

Hi All, Hope someone can help me out here! Last night, I plugged in a Seagate external hard drive via USB, and my mac recognized it and asked if i wanted to treat it as bkup for time machine. I selected "yes", formatted the HD, then it had a status bar going for a few hours where it transfered information, then hours later the status bar disappeared.
Afterwards, I clicked on the ext hd icon, and the entire computer froze up. Upon re-booting, the ext hd was still plugged in, but wasn't recognized at all by the mac. I tried turning on/off the hard drive, different USB ports, etc., but nothing. HELP!!!

Sounds like you might have a failed External HD. Does Disk Utility see the HD? If it does, try mounting the disk then reformatting.
BTW, you should really post this to the Time Machine Forum. There are more experts there about Time Machine.

  • Western Digital External Hard drive keeps undocking when running time machine.

I have been using a 2TB Western Digital My Book external hard drive for about a year now to run time machine and backup my files. The past month I have noticed that my backups have been failing. I try and for a backup and about halfway through it gets "delayed" because of an error. Then I have a alert pop up on my desktop with the following message:
The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.
The disk was not unplugged from the power supply or the usb port. I am stumped. Anyone know what is going on and how to fix it??

I would avoid WD, Seagate, LaCie, and Iomega external drives, and any drive with special features such as networking or built-in backup software.

  • Toshiba 1TB External Hardrive not recognized after using a USB 8GB Drive

    Hello.
Windows 7 Ultimate, HP G671 Notebook, X86 based PC, Bios HP F, 20 10/13/2009, Intel Core 2Duo CPU [email protected] GHz, SMbios Version 2.4.
The Toshiba ext. HD was recognized initially but after the second time I needed to plug it back in there was no recognition in the drives list, under removable storage.  I find it listed in the devices where it states that it is enabled and working OK. Also I see it in the computer management/disk management area as healthy.  However, I obviouly cannot change files. I just noticed that there is no storage amount listed with the C:: Native Drive, nor in the D: disk drive when I have a DVD in it.  I've reassigned letters to the external drives and done the powereing on/off rebooting suggestions without resolution.  Any advice?

  • External drive not being backed up by Time Machine

I have 2 external HDDs, both USB 2. I'm using 1 for backups using time machine and one for my photos and music. Time Machine appears to backing up my internal drive but is not backing up the external data drive. The external data drive does not appear in the excluded files box in Time Machine setup but it is not being backed up. What am I doing wrong?

What I've done now id exclude it from the backup and tried to include it again and the minus sign does not come up when I select the data drive.
The data drive is a fat 32 drive. Will that make a difference?
    It will indeed.
TM only backs-up HFS+ partitions (any variant of Mac OS Extended). This is because TM uses the hidden +File System Event Database+ that OSX puts on such drives, tracking all the changes to the data on the disk.
Your only recourse to back it up with TM is to find a place to copy that partition or drive temporarily, then erase and reformat it. See item 5 or 6 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum for instructions.
Otherwise, you'll have to use a different app. I think that either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! may be able to do that. Check them out via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.

  • Super drive is not working after Restoring from Time Machine

well its pretty much the Subject actually, my imac giving me BlueScreen problem so i searched and posted question and the only Solution i got was to Re-install Leopard and i did that by using Leopard DVD and Restored my imac from Time Machine backup, But i got into new problem and now the TIME after restoring from the "Time Machine" my DVD ejecting EVERY CD,DVD etc. even the Leopard DVD which he reads happily.
I dont think its a hardware fault at all, but i'm not a "Genious". Any suggestion!

Issue solved with visit to Genius Bar.
As I understand it here are the steps the Genius did. Attempt to create the account (system preferences->users) with the same information. It will say it already exists. Very carefully read the options. One will say use the existing account. BE CAREFUL because one option will wipe your data.
If you need to do this it might be worth the trip to the Genius Bar as you could wipe your data. One precaution I took was to bring a full copy of that user account onto my desktop (from the backup immediately before the wipe) in addition to the one in the user folder. Once we verified that the account was working I moved the desktop copy to the trash and again verified the account (just to be safe).
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • User not showing after restoring from time machine backup

I was having issues with my 2009 Macbook pro. took it to the Genius Bar. Diagnosistics all showed ok. (I had done troubleshooting before I had the appointment). They suggested wipe and reinstalll from my time machine backup. I agreed.
Returned home to do the reinstall. When I went to log in found that one of my user accounts did not show in the log in - only my main and "guest" accounts. On checking the "users" folder the user is present. It also does not show in the system preferences user screen but when I try to recreate it says it exists. Note I have done this wipe and reinstall with Mavericks
Help! Most of the content I have on my main BUT there are several things that are not.
    Thank you for your attention.

Thank you for the quick response. Booting from the SL DVD, partitioning, and then a full restore has worked.
    Great!
It did take a bit for me to figure out how to select the SL DVD - the HD already had a restore on it that was causing the panic. The 'alt' key is a great trick for selecting your boot device.
So is the "C" key. That will boot from the CD (or DVD) in the SuperDrive.

  • Iphone not recognised after restore from time machine?

    Hi folks,
I suffered hard drive failure earlier this week and Apple installed a new one for me with the same OS as before (Leopard).
I restored a six month old backup via time machine, but the computer isn't now recognising my iPhone - either in iTunes or iPhoto. In the six months since I last backed up, I upgraded my handset from a 3GS with software 3.01 to a 4S with the newest software; could this be why my Macbook isn't recognising the phone? I don't know what to do, I've tried all the basic stuff the Apple site advises but no luck and I could do without a trip to a genius bar unless absolutely necessary
    Thanks in advance.

I have also tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling Mobile Device Support - no luck.

  • External HDD not recognized after unsafe removal

    Dear,
Yesterday i bought my first macbook pro. Before i bought that macbook i saved all my data from my windows laptop on my external USB HDD.
Today i connected the external hdd trough USB. the macbook recognized it immediatly but i accidentally removed the usb cable from the disk, so it dissappered.
Now when i connect the usb drive my macbook freezes for a period. After the freeze i don't see the drive.
If i remove the usb cable during the free the macbook comes back alive.
Since i am a newbie on mac i need your help !
    cheers

    Welcome to Mac-land.
This wouldn't happen to be a WD external drive, would it?
Is there some utility on your Windows laptop that you can use to repair the external drive? Something equivalent to Disk Utility on a Mac? I'm not a Windows guy so I don't know.
If the data is still on your Windows laptop, then maybe your Windows machine can erase the drive enough for you to get it to mount on your Mac.
Another option might be to see if your Mac will boot into recovery mode (restart and hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and then maybe Disk Utility (you'll find it when you boot into Recovery Mode) would be able to see the external drive and either repair it or reformat (erase) it.
Occasionally Techtool Pro 7 will be able to repair something that Disk Utility can't. Techtool is a good thing to have; it's the only third party maintenance/repair utility that you need. Techtool installs a repair partition (the eDrive) on your internal hard drive, similar to the recovery partition that is already there with Mavericks. So you might be able to boot into the eDrive and then see the external drive and either repair it or format (erase) it so it will show up under normal boot conditions on your Mac.
It seems less likely, but perhaps your external drive has chosen this time to die. If you can't get it to mount/erase/repair with either machine then that's probably what's going on.
Less likely than that, but still possible, is that the problem is with the external is in the enclosure itself, and not in the drive within, so if you can't get it to work any other way, it's worth a shot to remove the drive and put it in a different enclosure and see if it will work.

After upgrading to Windows 10, my external Samsung monitor isn't recognized.  Not sure if I need new drivers from HP or Samsung (they say they don't have anything for me, of course).

Hello I managed to solve my problem of brightness key not working by Installing the Intel HD Graphic 3000 Driver from Intel official site. So if your Graphic card is Intel HD 3000 Graphic and your system is 64 Bit OS then you can follow the below link to download it and install.....https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24971/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-64-bit Note :- This Graphic driver only support the following intel Processor And If Your Are still running the built in intel graphic card, then only download it and install at you own risk.Supports Intel(R) HD graphics on:            2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 processor            2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 processor            2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 vPro(TM) processor            2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 processor            2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 vPro(TM) processor            Intel(R) Pentium(R) Processor  900/B900/G600/G800 Series            Intel(R) Celeron(R) Processor 700/800/B700/B800/G400/G500 Series

  • External HD not recognized after incorrect ejection.

I recently unplugged my external HD from power while it was plugged in to my MacBook, though my MacBook was closed.  When I opened my MacBook, I was informed that the drive was incorrectly ejected.  Now, my computer refuses to recognize the drive.  I have plugged it in to both of my USB ports and tried restarting my computer.  Help please!

Not sure how this question relates to an AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, but try the following basic troubleshooting steps:
Power off the entire network....all devices....in any order you want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute by itself
Start the router next the same way
Start the Mac next the same way
Start the hard drive next the same way
Start other devices one at a time the same way
See if the Mac can see the hard drive
If no help, contact support at the drive manufacturer for additional assistance.

  • External HDD not recognized after Finder Crash?

Hi guys. I was loading a file in photoshop from my external hard drive. It was a big file 1.5gb. After 10 minutes of waiting i decided to force quit Photoshop as it was frozen at the loading bar. Soon after the finder stopped working too, so i restarted my mac.
Now everthing work fine but my external hdd its not recognised anymore. It works, as i can see the light on, but doesn't show anywhere on my mac.

  • USB External Drive not mounting after use with Time Caplule

I have a 1TB external Lacie hard drive I have been using to store data via connection to my Time Capsule USB port.
I purchased a new HD to replace the Lacie and would like to use the Lacie as an external drive for my Macbook Pro.
    Issue:
I erased all files on the Lacie before disconnecting it from the Time Capsule.
Connected the Lacie to my Macbook Pro via USB port.
Lacie disk spins, but never mounts - disk image never appears, disk just keeps spinning.
Ran Disk Utility. Lacie image shows up. Tryed to erase, but got an error that it wont mount.
Tryed to repare disk, but got the same message.
This also happens when I try to connect the Lacie to my iMac.
So, hooked it back up to Time Capsule. Disk shows up just fine.
    What's going on???

Where does it show up - Finder or System Preferences/Time Capsule?
Try ejecting the drive, turning it off for awhile, restart the computer, and then restart the drive and plug it in.
