External HD not recognized after incorrect ejection.

I recently unplugged my external HD from power while it was plugged in to my MacBook, though my MacBook was closed.  When I opened my MacBook, I was informed that the drive was incorrectly ejected.  Now, my computer refuses to recognize the drive.  I have plugged it in to both of my USB ports and tried restarting my computer.  Help please!

Not sure how this question relates to an AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, but try the following basic troubleshooting steps:
Power off the entire network....all devices....in any order you want
Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute by itself
Start the router next the same way
Start the Mac next the same way
Start the hard drive next the same way
Start other devices one at a time the same way
See if the Mac can see the hard drive
If no help, contact support at the drive manufacturer for additional assistance.

  • WD external hard drive not recognized after improper eject

I have a WD Passport external hard drive that I've been using for a while with my MacBook Pro. The cord got yanked, causing the drive to improperly eject. Now my computer isn't recognizing the HD. Help! Of course EVERYTHING important is on this drive!
I tried plugging it into a Mac desktop, which also did not recognize the drive.
I plugged a different Passport into my MacBook Pro, and it was recognized, so I know it's not the USB Port that's causing the problem.
I used the cord from the HD that mounted with the problem HD. Didn't mount with the new cord. So I know it's the passport that's causing the problem, not the MacBook, not the USB port, not the cord.
I ran the disk utility, and the HD does not appear...It is powering up though- the light on the HD is lighting up. Oh please help!
Did I kill my disk? Of course I just moved my entire iPhoto library to this location, and I haven't backed it up yet....

No.  It may just require a 00 Phillips driver depending upon the enclosure.  Do the swap on a towel so that the little screws don't bounce away from you.  You will have to pull the HDD out from the connecting plug.  Do it in a straight line, don't bend it, and you may have to slowly increase pressure to get it out of the connecting plug.
    It's not rocket science.
    Ciao.

  • External HDD not recognized after unsafe removal

    Dear,
Yesterday i bought my first macbook pro. Before i bought that macbook i saved all my data from my windows laptop on my external USB HDD.
Today i connected the external hdd trough USB. the macbook recognized it immediatly but i accidentally removed the usb cable from the disk, so it dissappered.
Now when i connect the usb drive my macbook freezes for a period. After the freeze i don't see the drive.
If i remove the usb cable during the free the macbook comes back alive.
Since i am a newbie on mac i need your help !
    cheers

    Welcome to Mac-land.
This wouldn't happen to be a WD external drive, would it?
Is there some utility on your Windows laptop that you can use to repair the external drive? Something equivalent to Disk Utility on a Mac? I'm not a Windows guy so I don't know.
If the data is still on your Windows laptop, then maybe your Windows machine can erase the drive enough for you to get it to mount on your Mac.
Another option might be to see if your Mac will boot into recovery mode (restart and hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and then maybe Disk Utility (you'll find it when you boot into Recovery Mode) would be able to see the external drive and either repair it or reformat (erase) it.
Occasionally Techtool Pro 7 will be able to repair something that Disk Utility can't. Techtool is a good thing to have; it's the only third party maintenance/repair utility that you need. Techtool installs a repair partition (the eDrive) on your internal hard drive, similar to the recovery partition that is already there with Mavericks. So you might be able to boot into the eDrive and then see the external drive and either repair it or format (erase) it so it will show up under normal boot conditions on your Mac.
It seems less likely, but perhaps your external drive has chosen this time to die. If you can't get it to mount/erase/repair with either machine then that's probably what's going on.
Less likely than that, but still possible, is that the problem is with the external is in the enclosure itself, and not in the drive within, so if you can't get it to work any other way, it's worth a shot to remove the drive and put it in a different enclosure and see if it will work.

Hello I managed to solve my problem of brightness key not working by Installing the Intel HD Graphic 3000 Driver from Intel official site. • Toshiba 1TB External Hardrive not recognized after using a USB 8GB Drive

    Hello.
Windows 7 Ultimate, HP G671 Notebook, X86 based PC, Bios HP F, 20 10/13/2009, Intel Core 2Duo CPU [email protected] GHz, SMbios Version 2.4.
The Toshiba ext. HD was recognized initially but after the second time I needed to plug it back in there was no recognition in the drives list, under removable storage.  I find it listed in the devices where it states that it is enabled and working OK. Also I see it in the computer management/disk management area as healthy.  However, I obviouly cannot change files. I just noticed that there is no storage amount listed with the C:: Native Drive, nor in the D: disk drive when I have a DVD in it.  I've reassigned letters to the external drives and done the powereing on/off rebooting suggestions without resolution.  Any advice?

  • External HD not recognized after Formatting & Running time Machine.

Hi All, Hope someone can help me out here! Last night, I plugged in a Seagate external hard drive via USB, and my mac recognized it and asked if i wanted to treat it as bkup for time machine. I selected "yes", formatted the HD, then it had a status bar going for a few hours where it transfered information, then hours later the status bar disappeared.
Afterwards, I clicked on the ext hd icon, and the entire computer froze up. Upon re-booting, the ext hd was still plugged in, but wasn't recognized at all by the mac. I tried turning on/off the hard drive, different USB ports, etc., but nothing. HELP!!!

Sounds like you might have a failed External HD. Does Disk Utility see the HD? If it does, try mounting the disk then reformatting.
BTW, you should really post this to the Time Machine Forum. There are more experts there about Time Machine.

  • HT202274 Password change old password not recognized after 10.9.5 upgrade

    God bless you, peace.
macbook pro 2012 user password not recognized after 10.9.4 too 10.9.5 upgrade plus tech work at apple.
I want to change user password, it is allowing me to get into user account and admin account on computer but I recently changed it for the tech work to be done. I would like to put the password back now to old password or a new one but... The few days old new password pre update and pre tech work is not being accepted to allow me to change to another password.
recent update, after 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 update and apple tech work done.
    1. Tech work replaced optical drive,
    2. 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 upgrade left computer endlessly booting up, then got into finder window tried to read backup drive and screen went to black curser and could not backup information as techs decided may need to be done before I left it with them.
    3. Also track pad was not (is not again) selecting text to drag unless real hard press and then only intermittently would select text or just drop the selection (not hold the selected text after a long scroll select, did work at first after tech work but back to not working). It is still not responding easily when pressed, but it is much better, as they did something with software they said. Today While typing this I am trying to select words misspelled and it does not select them unless I press not as hard it is becoming the same as before I see now, sometimes less pressure is needed but more than should be used.
I noticed today after tech work The Spell check is not responding with a two finger tap on the red underlined misspelled words without multiple try's with two finger tap. The curser moves around after selecting words also, or when selecting words so hard the curser moves to another place not on the desired words or check box. The curser arrow tip should select the word but it does not recognize unless I put the tail of the arrow onto the word then it recognizes the misspelled word for spell check on two finger gesture.
It looks like I need to take it back, I tried to call and check to confirm if the track pad intermittently and curser adjustment was serviced. In order to verify I had called three times to get that information to no avail. endless looped in the phone que, one would answer take info and then forward me to a endless loop dial ing phone that never was picked up, supposedly at the Bay street store tech section. Phone voice mail from apple support status on the repair, ...Juliano from Bay Street Apple repair store Emeryville, ca left a voice message... just generically said optical drive replacement is successfulI, I noticed right away three items were to be addressed but only the optical drive was mentioned, so I called three times to try and verify the other problems. One whole minute just to select this text and copy it to notes for a backup. It would not select at first, then after selected it would not copy it, then it would not paste to notes, it paste the last cut and paste I did 10 minutes ago.
I do not have a easy excellent wifi connection for my wifi only phone and would prefer email or chat for repair help. apple Repair No: R142180337

Try running the combo update. It fixes more files/data than the App Store upgrade.
    10.9.2

  • Logitech trackball not recognized after 10.5.8 update- LCC 3.1 needed

Logitech Trackman wireless trackball was not recognized after 10.5.8 upgrade. At re-boot, the "searching for bluetooth mouse" screen appeared, pushing the re-set button on the wireless base and trackball did not solve the problem.
Had to plug in my Apple mouse (worked immediately), go to the Logitech website and download the latest Logitech Control Center software for Snow Leopard, dated 9/22/09 (version 3.1)
After install and re-start, Logitech hardware worked perfectly, as before.
Not sure if it would avoid this issue, but I recommend installing LCC 3.1 before you install the 10.5.8 update. That or be sure you have an Apple mouse on hand.

Turns out the 10.5.8 update is missing a very important file which is
    /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias
After I copied one from my Centos 5.2 box, things are finally back to normal.

I have that file on my system and x11 was updated using 10.5.8 combo update. it works just fine.

  • Camera RAW, file not recognized after import and migration, Aperture 2.1

    Hi,
I have recently purchased a 1DMKIII and am constantly getting "file not recognized" after I import and even after migrating RAW files. My 1DS MK1 RAW files have no issues. The RAW files render just fine using CS4 bridge. Any ideas here on a fix? Other than ditching Aperture (not desireable)
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hummmm..I have just 'manned-up' from a 2gb macbook running tiger+CS4 to a iMac 24" 8gb running leopard BUT!
I shoot RAW and the iMac will not recognize the NEF RAW files! this is soo frustrating - tried to update Camera Raw but to no avail.
please help! I've got 987 raw wedding photos to process!!
I dont know what to do!

  • External hard drive is not recognized after attempt to format

I just got a new macbook and couldn't use my external hard drive because it was formatted on a PC and only allowed me to read the data. I backed up the data on the 250gb hd and then used Disk Utility to erase the hd and format it as "Mac OS extended (journaled)." After beginning, Disk Utility stopped working and showed up as "not responding" in the Activity Monitor.
Now the hd does not show up on the desktop and can only be seen in Disk Utility. If I try to erase again or partition the hd the utility stops responding. If I try to zero out the drive it continues to say "preparing to zero" indefinately. Now the hd is also not recognized by windows except in the windows disk utility, but it does not even give the option of formatting/initializing it, so that is not an option.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or have any idea of something that I haven't tried yet. I really want to get the drive working and have exhausted all the ideas I can come up with. The internet has not provided too many ideas either.
Thanks so much for your help.
Black MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have crazy solution to format it to FAT 32, it work a couple times on my several MAxtor, and Western Digital HD. But this is the last resort and if you are not handy and familiar, don't do it.
It happen on my external HD, so I crack the enclosure open, pulled the HD out and attached it as internal HD on a PC after adjusting the jumper to master and make sure no other HD attached to the motherboard. Make sure the motherboard detected (you can see it from bios menu).
Insert a bootable installer disk before XP ('98, ME, or 2000), and start from there until a promt comes, and type fdisk and you delete the old partition and create a new partition and restart once using the disk still and format it using FAT 32.
After that you put it back to the enclosure, and mount it to MacBook as a new HD with default factory format.
If you don't have the installer disk, this might help :
    http://www.bootdisk.com/
But if your maxtor still under warranty better talk to them first and they might willing to reformat it for you.
Hope this help your external back and let you use it on your MacBook.
