External HD refuses to eject ~ no obvious apps/processes preventing it??

One of my external hard drives simply refuses to eject/un-mount, and I've done everything I can think of to terminate any processes and/or applications that may be using the drive and preventing it from being ejected properly, but I haven't had any success...
Is there some Mac-Jedi way of going about isolating what might be preventing this drive from ejecting properly? I've scoured the activity monitor but can't figure out what might be preventing the drive from ejecting??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

yes, there is! Let me just get might light saber
enter the following with command in terminal
sudo lsof /Volumes/"drive name"
instead of the "drive name" in the above put the name of the external. KEEP the quotes. You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.
The command will output any processes accessing the drive.

  • **** thumb drive refuses to eject

Whenever I eject a thumb drive or external hard drive, I get an error "The drive is in use. Try quitting some applications and try again."
Believe me, I've tried this every possible way.  Quitting applications NEVER makes a difference.  I'll strip down to bare Finder, and still the message will always persist.  I'm guessing a cold shutdown would work, but that's just not reasonable.  I should be able to eject a drive.
I have suspected a virus checker is camping the drive, but the checker will tell me when it has finished scanning the drive, and even after that, it still won't eject.  I've also tried going into Activity Monitor and killing daemons that appear related to virus or backup, and that sometimes works.
I need "reliable".   This is a Mac and that is my expectation.  I can forgive Apple a bad third-party app/daemon, but I can't forgive Apple's refusing to positively identify the app or daemon responsible.  How do I tell myself?
Alternately, what's the downside if I just rip the **** thing out and click off the warning message?

If you do a Force Quit keyboard command (Option + Command + Esc) does it show any apps open? Are there any (recently opened) apps on the Thumb Drive?
If you have the problem where you can’t empty the trash or eject a disk because something is preventing you? Usually the reason is because some application has a file open, and thus you can’t get rid of the disk or trash the file. Then use What’s Keeping Me! What’s Keeping Me will identify the application that is preventing you from accomplishing your task. You can then use What's Keeping Me to quit, relaunch, or kill the problem application so you can get on with your business.

  • My external HD refuses to be erased !!!

My Lacie external hd refuses to be erased.
I have tried ALL of the options in Disk utility - also partitioning,
but all i get is " Unknown error: -20 "
Erasing with the " 8Way random write format" seems to work; but it will LITERALLY take almost a whole week!
Really needs help with this one !
(see also my topic "ERASING REGRET" in this discussion)

I'm relieved to see I'm not the only person having trouble with Lacie's drive. I just bought one, and it is very temperamental. At first, I could not get it recognized at all, so I followed a suggestion on LaCie's website, and disconnected everything, power and all, for 15 minutes. I then partitioned the drive under Tiger. It appears to get temperamental if any other device is connected to Firewire. It would not allow me to write to it or eject it if my iSight were connected, and when I tried daisy chaining my OWC hard drive, it allowed me to copy 3GB of material and then stopped. It now gives an error message saying the file names are too long. When I try to eject it, it says it's in use. The only solution seems to be to turn everything off and restart with only the LaCie drive connected.

  • ITunes Refuses to Eject My iPod Classic 160GB

I purchased one of the newest iPod Classic 160GB models and while it originally connected great when I connected to iTunes, now, iTunes absolutely refuses to eject my iPod everytime I connect.
I have to eject my iPod through Windows Explorer and this happens everytime I connect it to my computer. Does anyone have a fix for this?

My computer is running  Windows 7 Pro SP1 with all updates and I do not see anything in that article other than perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes that helps.  I do not have any third party apps related to Apple.  I do have one or two third party applications that work with Microsoft Office products and they were installed long before iTunes stopped working, so I do not believe that they have anything to do with iTunes's problems.
I have verified that there are no third party apps working with iTunes. ITunes only freezes when I attempt to disconnect the ipod. It d

  • CD Drive refuses to eject...

    Hello,
My slot loader refuses to eject...when I eject a CD you can hear the drive trying to eject but it cannot - and then after the cd does not mount again. I have to either push a paper clip thru the whole a couple of times for it to come out(sometimes it doesn't work) or I have to try to stick another CD into the drive to take the original one out.
It was horrible, its been happening for a long time - I just reformatted my HD today and Mac os x installer rquired other cd's to be inserted - when the installer tried to eject, the cd wouldn't - thank god i have an external cd/cd-rw drive!
    Please help.
    Sean

    Hello,
Sounds to me like your drive is out of alignment with the slot on your computer.
It probably needs a slight adjustment in it's positioning inside the computer to properly line-up with the slot that the disk comes out of.
I would try opening the computer, and re-seating the CD-ROM drive so that it lines-up better.
If that doesn't work, then try placing a plastic shim under it, and fix the shim in-place with some vinyl or electrical tape. Don't use anything metal that could short something if it later fell-out. Stick with shim material that is not electrically conductive.
This should fix your problem. The trick will just be getting the drive to sit properly and line-up with the slot you have on the front of the computer.
If you don't feel up to doing this, you could take it to a service center. But, since your machine is out of warranty (being an older G3 iMac), you'll have to pay for the service.
If you want to do it yourself, here are some guides that will show you how to dismantle your computer and get into the area where the CD-ROM drive is located:
    http://www.nelsonbc.ca/mactechsupprt_html/imac_hard_drive_replace/imac_replace_harddrive.html
    http://www.fastmac.com/downloaddata/imacslcpuinstall.pdf
While those articles are not specifically targeted at the CD-ROM drive, they will help you dismantle the computer and show you clearly how to get to that area. Just don't go further into the process than you need to (stop at adjusting the CD-ROM drive).
    I hope this helps.

I am runnning Yosemite and wanted to know, how can I set up my external hard drive just to store certain apps i.e music and pictures?

  • External HDD: Shows not ejected properly when the drive is still present

    Hi,
I have a Seagate 500 GB external HD, the big one with power adapter. I connect to my MBP with a USB cable. Recently, every now and then, I am seeing the message "Your external disk was not ejected properly. Always make sure you eject blah blah..." even when the disk is firmly planted onto the Mac. I can see the disk in my desktop and finder. But keep getting this message nevertheless.
Another observation is - If I have Picasa open, Picasa fails to load the pictures in the external HDD when this happens. Pictures that has been earlier added to Picasa library, that is, which should ideally show up when the HDD is connected.
    Any ideas?

Try a different USB cable. If that doesn't work, go to Seagate's web site and open a tech support request with them. If a new USB cable doesn't help, there is probably a problem with that disk drive such as outdated firmware.

Why do my two external hard drives require "ejection" upon shutdown?

Problem solved. I had plugged in my external hard drives into a USB card.  I switched my two printers to the USB card and plugged in the two hard drives into the computer's USB outlets and now NO improper eject messages. What a relief!!!  Thanks again.

You are not alone. Thousands have this problem, on various models of Macs. Short answer, it has something to do with the disk going to sleep (possibly?). You can't do anything about it and Apple won't address the problem. Maybe you should buy a time capsule. Just keep giving them money and use their proprietary equipment.

  • MBP Refusing to eject disc

Two weeks ago, I put a disc into my MBP and it started making a horrendous noise. I tried to eject the disc using the traditional methods (the eject button on the keyboard, ejecting the disc from iTunes, holding command + e etc). I then went on to restart my mac, and as advised on the phone by apple, to press down the left trackpad key and eject button. Nothing worked, but then randomly it ejected pressing the eject button (having already tried that). The disc came out scratched.
Amongst a variety of other problems, I took my MBP to the apple store this week. They said the MBP was fine, and tested the optical drive which worked fine in store.
I've taken the MBP home, and put a disc in it and now, although not making the funny noise, it refusing to eject the disc.
The disc is being read. I've tried all steps above. There are not two discs in there.
    I am at a loss.

    Good morning,
Sometimes, it’s difficult to distinguish between what is hardware and software induced problems. Repairing Permissions and/or Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) may resolve or at least help in the troubleshooting process.
    Repair Permissions:
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions
    PMU
Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) is known to resolve certain anomalies and may well help with your symptom.
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

Guess I was in the wrong place to ask question.  So here it is, in PSE 11, I was downloading photos from Sony's Play Memories program, got a news Sony camera and they push this program, knew I shouldn't of used it, but to late.  While downloading photos from this into PSE organizer, it gets to 49% and freezes.  Must manually shut off computer to close out of Elements.  A small window appears stating "closing 1 app and shutting down, this app is preventing a shutdown".
My back up is on an external hard drive, Made sure I had the back-up for I was going to uninstall PSE 11 and Sony's Play Memories then re-install PSE 11 from hard drive.  Before I knew it, the back up started to down load and picked up the faulty portion from the Organizer.  So now they are both useless as I see iut.  Any thoughts?

  • Page item value set in app process not maintained after page submit

Hi -- I have a sequence of events that goes like this:
    1) Page 0 region REG_1 is rendered before footer
    - Region REG_1 uses javascript / AJAX to call App process PROC_1
    - PROC_1 sets Page1 item PAGE1_MESSAGE to X
    - After PROC_1 executes successfully, REG_1 does doSubmit()
    2) Page 0 region REG_2 is rendered before footer; this happens
after the page submit done by REG_1. (Conditions ensure that
    REG_1 is not rendered again)
    - Region REG_2 displays PAGE1_MESSAGE (=X) in an alert.
    - Region REG_2 uses javascript / AJAX to call App process PROC_2
    - PROC_2 sets Page1 item PAGE1_MESSAGE to Y
    - PROC_2 sets Application item DEBUG to PAGE1_MESSAGE (this is for debugging)
    - PROC_2 sets Application item APP_MESSAGE to Y (this is also for debugging)
    - After PROC_2 executes successfully, REG_2 does doSubmit()
    3) After REG_2 submits the page, here's what I have:
    - Application item APP_MESSAGE = Y. Good. This is what it was set to in PROC_2.
    - Page 1 item PAGE1_MESSAGE = X. Bad. This is what it was set to in PROC_1.
    - Application item DEBUG = Y. Good. This at least shows that PAGE1_MESSAGE was
set to Y within PROC_2... but for some reason that value is not being preserved
after the app process is done executing.
    - There are several other application items set in PROC_2, and they're all correct.
Any ideas as to why this is happening? It seems like this should be
pretty straightforward: set the value, submit the page, the value should be what
    I set it to.
    Thanks,
    Carol

Hi -- Thanks for the suggestions. First and 3rd (default value, or being overwritten by process or computation) aren't happening. The source for PAGE1_MESSAGE having is Always, Using app item PAGE1_MESSAGE... but I don't see what else could work here. Not sure if that's the problem.
I've put an example on apex.oracle.com. Workspace is dew_mir_tor. Username is [email protected]. Password is Mir97Dew77!Tor. Application is 22679, RefreshAllTest.
To reiterate the description in my original posting, but using the real application item/region/process names:
    0) Press Button REFRESH_ALL on Page 1. This branches back to Page 1.
    1) Page 0 region Refresh_All is rendered before footer
    - Region sends up an alert to show you it's working
    - Region Refresh_All uses javascript / AJAX to call App process REFRESH_CZAR (You'll see a "wait" window flash up briefly while the app process is running)
    - REFRESH_CZAR sets Page1 item P1_MESSAGE_1 to X (The text here indicates where
the value is being set and when it should be displayed)
    - After REFRESH_CZAR executes successfully, region Refresh_All does doSubmit()
    2) Page 0 region Refresh_Non_Czar is rendered before footer; this happens
after the page submit done by Refresh_Czar. (Conditions ensure that
    Refresh_Czar is not rendered again)
    - Region sends up an alert to show you it's working
    - Region Refresh_Non_Czar displays P1_MESSAGE_1 in an alert.
    - Region Refresh_Non_Czar uses javascript / AJAX to call App process REFRESH_NON_CZAR (You'll see a "wait" window flash up briefly while the app process is running)
    - REFRESH_NON_CZAR sets Page1 item P1_MESSAGE_1 to Y (The text here indicates where
the value is being set and when it should be displayed
    - REFRESH_NON_CZAR sets Application item TEST_VALUE2 to P1_MESSAGE_1 (this just shows that P1_MESSAGE_1 was indeed set to Y in this process...)
    - After process REFRESH_NON_CZAR executes successfully, region Refresh_Non_Czar does doSubmit()
    3) After Refresh_Non_Czar submits the page, Page 0 region Display_Messages is rendered.
It sends up an alert so you can see it's working, and then it displays the value in P1_MESSAGE_1.
The value is still the one that was set in REFRESH_CZAR, not the one set in REFRESH_NON_CZAR.
Note that Display_Messages sets P1_MESSAGE_1 back to null, so you won't see it in session state after it's displayed in the alert. But you can see that TEST_VALUE2 is set to the message from REFRESH_NON_CZAR.
Hope this helps solve the problem!
    Thanks,
    Carol

an ipod touch supports all files types which its apps support

thanks, it's good to get a reply, but why do you keep going on about windows? Agreed, there is no mention that Tremor runs on iOS. So far this is the only reason given that it cannot run on iOS. You can read and I can read.
By putting the question to the community I was hoping for something like: the app you want is here-link, or the app you want cannot be written because technical-reason.
From a words point of view it would seem to be open for any ios developer to support DMG files.
