External HD Time Machine partition shows in Desktop but not in Finder

I have a External HardDisk with two partitions, one for Time Machine and other for Data.
Until now when I power on the disk two icons appear on my MacBook, one Orange with a USB logo for the Data partition and other Green with Time MAchine logo for the Time MAchine partition.
Suddenly when I power on in FInder I can see only the Data Partition. while in Desktop I can see both, but now the Time Machine Partition is orange with the USB logo (just like the Data partition).
On the other hand everytinhg seems to be workning, I can acces both partitions and Time Machine apparently works Ok, but don't know if something is happening in the background, and I have all my data in that Disk!!!!!

David Casillas wrote:
I can see and use both partitions, but in Finder under DEVICES only DATA partiton shows.
If a navigate in Finder to MacBook for example I can now see both partitions.
Excuse me if my explanation of the subject is not clear. Here is a screenshoot of what happens. In the left you can see the Finder window with just Data Partition, on the right Desktop with both.
If you haven't yet, from a Finder window's menubar, select +Finder > Preferences > Sidebar.+ Un-check the +External Disks+ checkbox, wait a moment, then check it again.
Try going to TM Preferences, de-selecting the drive (select "none"), waiting a moment, then re-selecting it.
Try deleting the file <your home folder>/Library/com.apple.Finder.plist and either relaunch the Finder (from the +Force Quit+ menu) or Restart.

I haven't used this iPod Nano with my G5 since it was new. Today I connected it, and it shows up on the desktop, but it doesn't appear in iTunes. I unmounted it and connected it again. each time I do that, it tells me it's detected a software update, but when I check, the dialog box tells me it's current.

  • IPod Classic 80GB shows on desktop but not in iTunes, so will not sync

My work Mac has just been upgraded to 10.5.8, and with it iTunes to 10.1. Now, when I connect my iPod, it appears on the desktop but not in the iTunes panel. As such, it won't sync any new content.
There is no problem with the cable, as the iPod charges while connected. I've tried resetting the iPod about a dozen times, which has no effect (once in a while the iPod says it is synchronizing, but this only lasts a few seconds and then disappears). Is there anything else I should try before I take the big step of formatting the iPod? I'm reluctant to do this because at the moment I at least have an iPod full of music - if I format and it still won't sync, I'll have a useless empty black box! Is it possible to go back to the previous version of iTunes which was syncing fine?

  • Movie in Time Machine backup plays in "quickview" but not Quicktime

    Hi,
I trashed a Quicktime movie a few days ago, TM had backed it up beforehand. I found it on my TM backup of the desktop and it plays in quick view (select>spacebar) Having restored it to my current desktop it still does quick view but won't open in Quicktime and a "searching for file" pops up as if a dependency is missing. I let Quicktime search but it doesn't find anything and i have to abort.
My question is: where is the wanted file likely to be then?

You have a pretty simple problem: time machine does not allow you to backup two computers to the same hard drive or partitioin. the way to fix this is to repartition you WD drive into two partitions, one for each computer. if you already have other data (not from time machine), make three partitons: one for iMac, one for PowerBook, and one for Other. do not put any data other than time machine data on the iMac and PowerBook partitons, always put it in other. you can partiton a disk easily with disk utility, but wait:
_CAUTION: THIS WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOOSE ALL THE DATA ALREADY ON THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!_
to avoid this, first use disk utility to make a disk image of the external hard drive, and save it on your internal drive. if the image won't fit (your internal drive doesn't have enough capacity, then you can either erase all the data on already on the hard drive with the reformat, or buy another disk to use for the PowerBook) then, when the disk is partitioned correctly, mount the disk image and copy all the files on it back to the correct* partition of the external hard drive. *if the files on the external hard drive came from the iMac, then put them on the iMac partiton of the drive. if they came from the powerbook, put them in that partition, and if it is not from time machine, put it in othe
    Hope you followed all that!

  • Time machine is full with backups, But I cannot find them!

Time Machine will not backup to my 500GB HD because it is full. When I open up the "About this Mac" option and click storage this comes up:
As you can see it's filled with backups. (I do not have ANY movies on this drive). You'll also notice that I use this drive to backup audio from CPU intense programs that reccomend external drives to prevent hard drive crashing.
When I open the disk up in finder these backups are nowhere to be found. Even worse is when I open time machine only ONE backup is available!
Time machine was working for almost a year. What happened? And how do I delete all these "invisible" backups without having to do a complete erase??

For TM to perform as expected it is recommended that the EHD be at least twice the size of the Drive(s) it is intending to Backup.
Your EHD is not... hence the issue you are encountering.

  • Time machine backups present on disk but not seen

Hi. I just notice that on my macbookpro time machine is keeping creating the hourly backups, but I cannot see them anymore from the time machine interface.
All backup files seem to be on the disk, but whenever I enter the time machine I can only see the last one, as if I started the time machine for the first time.
Any idea why this is happening? And, more important, any idea on how to fix it?
I'm on a macbook pro with OS X 10.8.5; the time machine files are stored in an external USB disk.
    Thank you for your support.

My TM did this after the upgrade to 10.9
When I first set it up, I just clicked to use the same drive I had been using, even though I'd just formatted it.
Apparently that causes the backups not to appear in the app.
So, here's what finally resolved it. I:
    1. Opened Time Machine Preferences.
    2. Turned Time Machine off.
    3. Clicked "Select Disk...".
    4. DELETED the TM disk I had previously selected.
    5. Reformatted the TM disk once again.
    6. Reopened Time Machine Preferences.
    7. Reselected the newly formatted disk from the list.
    8. Turned Time Machine back on, and let it begin backing up.
When I opened it the next morning, I had seven backups in the app to choose from.

Time Machine doesn't work well, if at all, with many NASs. See the pink box in #2 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
There are several threads in the Snow Leopard > Time Machine forum with what appear to be similar problems with Iomega NASs.
If I connect my macbook to the router directly via an ethernet cable, and start a backup, it works fine. If I however try to start a backup when only on wireless it always fails.
An indication of a bad wireless connection or interference, but could also be the setup of the NAS or compatibility with the way the router works in wireless mode.

After an initial failure, it did connect.

You've posted in the Leopard forum, and didn't specify what version of OSX you're on. But those messages usually indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with the Time Machine requirements on Snow Leopard.
    Error: (5) getxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.SnapshotState path:/Volumes/MAC Backups/Backups.backupdb/Gary's MacBook Pro/2011-01-15-042811
Those are errors reading from the backups; specifically, getting extended attributes from the backups on your NAS (a "snapshot" is Time Machine's name for a backup folder).
First, contact the maker of the NAS for updated software/firmware compatible with Snow Leopard.
That might fix the problem. If not, all we can tell you is, it may be some problem with the setup of the NAS, and/or compatibility with the wireless function of your router. See the maker's instructions/Help/support.

Its possible to replace it yes.   Its not easy, as you have to dissasemble the MacBook to get to it.
The drive you want is not compatible.  The drive in current 2014 MacBoock Pro´s is not even a Sata type drive.  Its a PCie Blade type drive.

Certain models of single processor Power Macintosh G5 computers may show iPod nano mounted in the Finder but not recognized in iTunes. If this happens to you, try restarting your computer and Setting Energy Saver to highest performance and turn off hard disk sleep. If you have an iPod nano, but don't have a G5, then follow the other steps below.
The other steps all seem to deal with earlier versions of OS X. You are using 10.5? (your system info changed from your first post to your last post, dropping the 10.5 info).

  • IPod shows in iTunes, but not in Finder

I have a click-wheel iPod, and when I connect it to my computer, it opens iTunes and updates properly. It shows up in Finder too, but only until the iPod is finished updating. As soon as iTunes says the update is complete, the iPod icon disappears from the Finder. It is still in iTunes, however, and I can re-update it if i want to. The screen on the iPod changes from "Do not disconnect" to the regular charging screen, but it is still shown in iTunes, not the Finder, leaving me able to update the music, but unable to put any additional data on it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Also, I have tried putting it in disk mode with the same results. It shows up for an instant, but then disappears.

One possible cause is so simple that people miss it without realizing. Has the iPod been enabled for disk use in iTunes? Please note that this is not the same as putting your iPod into 'disk mode'. Your description makes it sound like it isn't, and I believe it is off by default, so I'll tell you how to enable it.
With iTunes open, and your iPod connected, go to Preferences in the iTunes menu, click the iPod tab, and (if it't not already selected) mark the box labeled 'enable disk use' (or something to that effect). Then, the iPod should mount on the desktop like a standard hard drive, and you can open it just like a normal drive. The iPod's needed files and your songs are all hidden from view so you don't accidentally move anything you shouldn't.

  • Table of Contents Showing on Desktop, but not in iPad preview

The table of contents was working just fine, meaning that it showed in both the work on the desktop and then when I sent a preview to the iPad.
I'm not sure what I have done, but now, while the TOC shows on the desktop version, it doesn't show up in the iPad preview.
Not sure where to start to solve this. Any help or tips would be great.

Update: I don't know why, but it has started working again on its own. I suspect that shutting down everything and restarting helped, but I don't know for sure. I'm just glad it is working again! Peace.

  • Time Capsule gives internet to Desktop but not Macbook....

Ok wizkids i am in need of your help.
last night we had a storm and it knocked all our power out and when it came back on the internet was down, i went all gun-ho assuming i could fix it messing with time capsule and my modem, no luck. a few hours later the internet is back (could see this on the modem) but Time Capsule was no longer doing it's job to send my Mac Book Pro its beautiful internet.
So here is what i have, Cable modem, to 1tb time capsule, time capsule connected to my dell desktop running XP.
I current have internet on my desktop, provided by the time capsule and can also wirelessly connect to time capsule and its files via my mac book pro, but no matter what i seem to do, i cant seem to get it to connect to the inernet via time capsule.
im wondering if it has anything to do with the DHCP settings, and what i need to enter in that section or the router, ip address areas (currently on automatic so nothing has been manually entered...)
    any help would be hot.
    thanks

This is the AirPort Graphite and Snow forum. I suggest you post in the Time Capsule forum if you want more specific help.
For what it's worth, here is how I see your situation.
Since you have working Internet on the Dell, the correct settings for acquiring an IP address from your ISP are already present, either in the Time Capsule or in the Dell. If it is the Dell that has acquired the Internet IP address from your ISP (i.e., an address other than 10.0.1.x), the same TCP/IP settings (DHCP, PPPoE or Manual) that the Dell has been using should be used instead by the Time Capsule. If DHCP, the accompanying non-automatic fields (e.g., DNS servers, client ID) might or might not need to be filled in. If PPPoE, the account name and password would need to be filled in.
The Time Capsule should be configured to share a single IP address. Both client computers should use DHCP as their TCP/IP settings (with accompanying fields blank), the Dell in its Ethernet settings and the MacBook Pro in its AirPort settings. The IP address that they acquire from the Time Capsule should have the form 10.0.1.x.
If the Dell has been acquiring the Internet IP address, the modem might need to be unplugged from power for at least 5 minutes before the Time Capsule can acquire it instead.

    erickfrombloomfield wrote:
I thought Time Machine made a clone of my boot drive.
TimeMachine copies your entire boot drive, but it's not a clone. Clones are near 100% exact copies of your boot partition.
TM every so often updates with a "state" representing a day, it only saves the changes between states so this way it's not making your external drive full in a couple of days.
You go through the "states" to pick the copy of the file you want to restore with or the entire drive.
    So that is not true?
    TimeMachine is not a clone.
Aclone is a exact image of your boot partition, just like you picked up all your software and placed it on another drive.
Clones can be updated, and now even save the "states" between clones, but then it's not a clone anymore as it's not a 100% copy, but a bootable clone + backup.
How can I make the Time Machine copy on the Time Capsule bootable?
You can't, a TimeMachine can only restore, not bootable although I hear it's possible to boot to restore only.
Or how can I make a clone on Time Capsule?
You don't. The softwre and technology is not compatbile.
If you want a clone be able to boot from it, and see everything on  the drive like any other, then you need to use a new blank drive and Carbon Copy Cloner, then it's a option key bootable clone drive.
TM or TimeCapsule can't do this, it's a backup system, not a clone.
If you want to learn more about TM you can visit this site
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
I don't use TM at all, it's for newbies mostly. It takes a long time to restore with as it has to go through all the states to grab files.
Power and seasoned users use clones so they also can boot from them, make more clones or run the computer if the drive dies etc.etc.
