External HDD is NTFS, How to Convert So iMac can Write?

I ripped a lot of music on this external hard drive via my WinXP PC, before I got my iMac. When I switched the drive over to my iMac recently, I found that I can READ it but I CANNOT WRITE to it. This is interfering in a lot of fuctions via iTunes and writing GET INFO to my albums. Also, I would like to be able to store new information on the external drive from projects on the iMac.
I guess my question is: Is there a utility to convert my external NTFS drive to something the iMac can read/write to without destroying my data? Or do I just need to copy everything to the iMAC, then reformat the external drive and then copy everything back?
Thanks for all the advice!
Holly

If you want to use it as is, and write to it, all you need is MacFUSE plus 3G.

Or there is Paragon drive $29

If you want to use it on Mac, I would backup, change the drive table from MBR to GPL and use HFS+ to preserve metadata, time stamp and work with Spotlight and backups.

  • How to partition an external HDD to NTFS and Fat32

    Hi guys,
I wonder if you can help me.... I'm trying to partition my WD external HDD into two. I want the first partition to be formatted as NTFS as I will be using this part with only windows. The second half I need to be able to use it on both mac and windows and therefore would prefer FAT 32. I have already partitioned the drive into two and formatted the first half to NTFS. The problem occurs when I try to use disk utility to format the free space on the drive to FAT 32. Can you help me?

thats well and fine, but you do realize that :
A: HD are cheap as dirt
B: putting all your data into a single external HD is a nasty choke point for awful data loss?
ergo, not a hot idea in general.
Mac's on OS X can't format or write to NTFS formatted drives, they can read from it though.
Your best option is to format the external drive on the Windows machine using exFAT as it will do it correctly, the Mac has issues formatting exFAT for Windows.
Once the drive is formatted exFAT on Windows, it will work like a charm between both platforms and can use +4GB sized files, which FAT32 (MSDOS) cannot.

I'm a new mac user and have just switch platforms. I don't want to loose the data on my Mac OR format the external HDD which is the backup of my previous WIN machine.

It's only 4 MB. Perhaps you should try again. If your satellite broadband can't handle that, perhaps you need something better, like 3G or dialup.
What is best plan.. <?> get a new HDD to exclusively Time machine to OR install Bootcamp and hope for the best...?
Time Machine requires HFS+ to work. It will create an HFS+ disk image when used with a server. For an external hard drive, I suggest you partition it into 2 volumes, one being HFS+ and the other NTFS.

  • External HDD gone funny - how to save the data

    Hi again
My external HDD has now for some reason when I plug it in say need formatting... the problem is I have 380 GB of music etc on it..
Is there n e way I can recover this as il be proper gutted if I lose it..
    Thanks

    Hi there
There are programs you can use that can restore lost/damaged drive data. I have used Active File Recovery for Windows which was great at getting data off a drive.
The drive in question had lost part of the information telling it how big the My Documents folder was - as a result it couldn't access the folder & kept saying that I didn't have sufficient user privileges to access it. After streaming all the info off the drive, (80GB which took an hour or so) i reformated the original drive & was unable to extract the My Documents folder from the recovered data & upload it back to the computer.

  • How to convert US Keyboard to write Norwegian letters (æ ø å)?

A friend bought a MacBook Air in New York recently. The trouble is that we have 29 letters in our Norwegian alphabet, "æ ø å" in addition to the english ones. Is there any way to code the keyboard to write those Norwegian letters?
    Grateful for all help:)

Thanks, I am at least getting the swedish letters that way, but they are a bit different from the Norwegian ones. The norwegian "æ" becomes swedish "ä" and the norwgian "ø" becomes swedish "ö" which both are pronounced the same and understood also in Norway, but I can´t find the "å" that way.
By hitting the opt+1 I can get the copyright sign ©, and opt+2 writes ™ for example. Is there a way to code the options key to bring up those three norwegian letters?
    Thanks again:)

  • How a not provisioned user can write in a forum into my OCS?

I explain you the problem. In Discussion Application i have created 4 Forums where 3 are only for provisioned users registered into my OCS and i would want to permit that people not registered can read a write topic into my 4th forum. I am the administrator and in the section setting i have setted this possibilty for my 4th forum. Now i would want to put in another site a link for this opened forum. What i have to do? In which kind not registered users can see my forum?
    Please help me. Bye George

    Hi George,
As far as I know there is no way to "pass in" user credentials to SSO in the URL. The URL you provide will just be for the discussions application(/discussions/app for example) and users will be automatically redirected to login to SSO first. What I meant by "distribute the username/credentials along with the URL" was that you'd have to describe to users how they'd go about logging into the discussions applications through SSO using the guest user and the password which you'll have to supply to them.
Please bear in mind that once users are given the credentials for the guest user that they will be able to login to other applications as well. For example, the users will be able to login to the Mail application and send e-mails. Also, depending on Workspaces settings they may be able to create new workspaces, lookup other users in the system and invite others to join the workspace, etc.
So essentially the implication is that there are other consequences that you must keep in mind when deciding to give out the credentials to the user. In general, given these security concerns, I wouldn't recommend distributing the username and password of any user to anyone.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • Add Seagate 2TB External HDD to Oracle VM  /OVS

    Hello guys,
I have got a empty Seagate 2TB External HDD with NTFS partition And I want to add this as addition storage to my Oracle VM Server in OVS partition.
Also this 2TB USB HDD is solely dedicated to Oracle VM so I am not bothering about Any other operating systems.
To accomplish my this purpose I have gone through so many online forum to convert Seagate ntfs partition to Linux partition. But I couldn't find success.
So Here my questions are :
    1) Is it possible to convert USB HDD ntfs partition to Oracle VM Server supported partition that can run VM Machine on it ?
    2) If Answer is Yes, then Could you explain me how do I do that ?
    Many Thanks

    Hi Herbert,
    Thanks for your reply,
So it means I have to create OCFS2 file system on external Hard drive.
    Thanks

  • Annoying!: Sharing an external HDD to a Mac and PC via Airport Extreme

I use an Airport Extreme to connect wirelessly to the Internet. I have no problem accessing the Internet with either the house's Mac or PC.
I have an external HDD connected to the AE via USB and can access that via the Mac only.
I wish to be able to access the external HDD wirelessly via the PC. The external HDD has 2 partitions, FAT32 and NTFS.
Via Airport Utility I have found my way to File Sharing under the menu, Disks. I have just selected "Share disks over WAN".
Do I need to configure the Windows File Sharing also?
This problem has bothered for me some time and I have been unable to find anything on the Internet.

I wish to be able to access the external HDD wirelessly via the PC.
Please review the following Apple Support article: AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows
The external HDD has 2 partitions, FAT32 and NTFS.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will only "see" the FAT32 partition as it will not recognize partitions formatted for NTFS.

  • Installing Arch on a non-empty external HDD.

Hi. I'd like to install Arch on my external HDD, where i already keep my music. It still has ~120GB of free space while my main laptop HDD is almost filled up.
The format of the external HDD is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so i can make a new partition while keeping the files. (I'm doing it on OS X).
how do i make the partition right so that i'll be able to install Arch? Which version should i download? I'm thinking Core USB Image but I'm not sure.
Any help is appreciated because I'm a total beginner.

IIRC, when I re-partitioned my external USB (NTFS) to build Arch, I just shrank the existing partition, booted up with an ArchLive CD, and let the installer create the necessary filesystems in the available space.

  • Automount of SD card & USB external HDD with strange KDE pop up msg

Today I reviewed lots of threads posted over the last year and some bug reports too about this issue, but it's happening for me too. Both SD card and USB external HDD have autodetectable filesystems on them because I can mount them by hand with "mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt" and "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt". But it would be nice if I didn't have to do that.
Although I didn't notice which explicit install that I did pulled them in as dependencies, I do have udisk2 and polkit installed. Also installed udiskie as a wrapper. I've been mounting these volumes by hand before now because I feel like I'm still learning the ropes of The Arch Way and guessed (apparently incorrectly) that mounting volumes by hand was just part of "The Arch Way". But based on some threads here and some bug reports, I guess this used to work in Arch but has been causing some problems for some people lately when they upgrade. I just installed Arch for the first time (using the 2015.02.01 iso image), so I don't have any background to go on.
So what is The Arch Way for automounting external drives? I've skimmed the wiki article for this and because "Development of udisks has ceased in favor of udisks2." it seems that udisks2 is preferred. But it got installed and the daemon is running for me. The user is in the wheel group. dbus is running (though like one person who filed a bug, I too have several instances of dbus in my ps -aux output and I'm not sure if that is as it should be or not). I've done no special configuration ("not wittingly" anyway; I promise, my name is not James Clapper) that I think would have affected this.
So for a newb with no special preference, how should automounting be configured in a new Arch system? In other words, what should be my first steps in trying to solve this problem for myself? I know there are lots of different ways to skin this cat, but I'd prefer the simplest and most elegant solution that does not depend on KDE or GNOME or other unnecessary tools. I've just (with this Arch system I just installed) begun using i3wm and I think I'll be sticking with it. That said, however, it's clear that I inadvertently/unwittingly managed to get some elements of KDE into memory as the following http://gamonics.org/img/2015-02-26-1731 … _scrot.png shows. This popped up both times, when I plugged in my SD card and when I plugged in my USB drive. Any thoughts on what's going on here? I did install okular explicitly because I think it's one of the best PDF viewers, but I don't understand why KDE is reporting anything to me when I'm running i3 and insert an SD card or a USB disk.
And in the terminal, I get this output (apparently from udiskie):
[root@archippocrates archie]# Failed to show notification: The connection is closed
    not adding /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/mmcblk0: unhandled device
    mounted /org/freedesktop/UDisks/devices/mmcblk0p1 on /media/3532-3338
Failed to show notification: The connection is closed
Although the volume does get mounted automatically.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I personally can't answer the question of "simplest and most elegant" way of mounting devices. It all depends on what you want. If you expect more exotic functionality, say correct unmounting of devices if they were disconnected during a sleep cycle, there's probably no way around udisks2. For that you get a complex piece of software prone to... unexpected behaviour. Mind you some of it is related to front-ends like GVFS.
As to your KDE issues, last I checked mount handling was disabled by default there, but you can control it manually (see man kcmshell4). Though I haven't followed up on KDE 5 developments. If going with udisks2, I'd recommend using devmon from the udevil package as a front-end (more details on the wiki udisks page).
PS: multiple dbus instances are expected, check the user names and specified arguments in the ps output.
    edit: grammar. :X

  • Can I view media files stored on an external hdd connected to a wifi router

Hi there, been searching but most the discussions seem quite old. I have a wifi router with a usb port for connecting an external hdd to. My ps3 will see the hdd but can I also get my iPad/iPhone to view the media files store on the hdd. Are there apps I need or settings I need. I currently use air video to stream from my pc but I am about about to change my pc for a laptop which will not be connected to an external drive constantly. Which is why I want to connect my hdd to my router, plus save on electric to run my desktop constantly.
    So is it possible?
    What do I need?
I'm a bit of an idiot so any settings I may need would be gratefully received too lol
Its an o2 wireless box 4, 500gb external hdd currently ntfs file system. I do not have apple tv either.
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give

8player does it, haven't tried it for a full episode yet but seems stable, plug hdd into router and open 8player on your device, browse to router and attached hdd and play the file. avi and mp4 work no prob and there is a lite version if you want to try it out yourselves

  • Cloning Two OS To One External HDD

Wanting to get a bootable clone of both a G4 and G3 iBook running Panther and Tiger onto an external drive where my MacBook Pro bootable clone is located.
When I went to repartition the external HDD I discovered a formatting problem. I can format using either GUID partitioning system or Apple partitioning system but they are incompatible as far as making a start up disk goes (Apple partitioning is suitable for Power PC and GUID is for Intel and is only good for non startup disk for Tiger or later.
Does this mean I cannot put a bootable clone of Tiger or Panther on the iBooks onto the HDD formatted using GUID? How should I approach this problem?

This is possible 'joh as I find it anyway.
In Disk Utility my external drive shows Partitioned Map Scheme says Apple Partition Map.
My internal drive on the Intel iMac's Partitioned Map Scheme is GUID Partition Table.
The external disk has numerous disk partitions and was used as a backup for years before I got the Intel. It now holds bootable clones of the Intel iMac 10.5, PPC G4 10.3 one for an eMac and the other for an iBook.
I do not have any G3 hardware or clone.
Connecting this external drive by Firewire to any of my Macs (Intel or PPC) allows me to boot into the respective clone volume.
It was a while ago, but I think I repartitioned the external drive (there are 7 partitions) on the Intel, and I don't remember explicitly choosing any particular partition Map, it just set Apple Partition Map itself and I made my seven disk partitions.
    Therefore, you should be OK.
All my clones are made by SuperDuper!. I have no experience of Time Machine.
The only quirk I have notice is that when booting into the 10.5 clone, it makes itself the startup volume, which has to be reset back to the iMac for the restart if you just want to hit restart and go straight to it. Whether the partition Map has any bearing on that I have no idea. For the other two PPC's their startup disks remain on the machines, which is normal.

  • Connecting and backing up external HDD to a Time Capsule

    Hi All,
Running a Macbook pro Retina. I would like to do the following things with a Time Capsule:
Physically connect an external HDD to the time capsule, put media on this external HDD and access it wirelessly on my macbook
Use the time capsule to back up (via Time Machine) the data on both my macbook's HDD and the external HDD
I would be grateful for help with the following queries:
Will Time Machine allow me to back up both the internal HDD and external HDD that is connected to the time capsule?
Does the external HDD I attach to the time capsule need its own power source, or will it take its power from the time capsule via USB?
Does the time capsule need to be turned on 24/7? Or can it just be turned on when I need to perform a back up / access the information on the external HDD?
Thanks for your help in advance. I know some of these questions may seem obvious, but having seen contradictory information online I'd like to make sure of my ground.

Physically connect an external HDD to the time capsule, put media on this external HDD and access it wirelessly on my macbook
Technically, you could do this. The question is whether you should do this.  The USB 2.0 port on the Time Capsule brings new meaning to word s-l-o-w, so copies and access are going to sluggish at best.  The port operates at about half the speed of a USB port on a computer.
As far as locating media on the USB drive, you would not want to locate a "working"  library there, as the experts in the iPhoto and Aperture forums strongly recommend against this, as well as Apple in their support documents. An iTunes Library is going to be really slow as well if you are thinking of that, and the library will tend to get lost, so you will wind up pointing iTunes to the library on a regular basis.
I've learned the hard way that it is much better to locate media on a drive that is directly attached to the Mac. Access is much faster and more reliable, and Time Machine can back up both the Mac and the attached hard drive.
Use the time capsule to back up (via Time Machine) the data on both my macbook's HDD and the external HDD
That is not possible, since Time Machine can only back up data on a Mac, or a drive that is connected directly to a Mac.
Will Time Machine allow me to back up both the internal HDD and external HDD that is connected to the time capsule?
    No, see answer above.
Does the external HDD I attach to the time capsule need its own power source, or will it take its power from the time capsule via USB?
Use a powered USB hub with the hard drive unless the drive has its own power supply. Sometimes though, you still have to use a powered USB hub with a drive, even when the drive has its own power supply.  You won't know if he drive will work until you try it out.
Does the time capsule need to be turned on 24/7? Or can it just be turned on when I need to perform a back up / access the information on the external HDD?
Apple designed the Time Capsule to be "always on" since there is not even an "Off" switch on the device.  Network connections will remain a lot more stable if you leave the TC on.  With Yosemite, the TC has a hard enough time not losing network connections. Forcing the TC to establish new connections every time that you power it off and back on is bound to create issues.
