External HDD keeps changing from HFS to NTFS

Greetings,
This is my first post and I am also brand new to apple. I have an issue that I am wondering if anybody has experienced it.
I currently migrated from an old PC (XP SP3) to OSX. I have files on an external HDD that was used on the PC that I now want to use on the mac. (Formatted NTFS)
Now I know that NTFS is not writable in OSX but here is where my issue lies.
I currently have a MB463LL/A model with 2.26 and 4GB. I am currently using a 250GB ext HDD for backup purposes for a photography business (not using Time Machine yet). I recently transferred the files to another external HDD, 1TB, (as to not lose the photos) and used disk utility to erase the 250GB disk and formatted it using the HFS Extended format. (might not be the correct one so correct me if I am using the wrong format please.)
After transferring the files back to the HDD, the HFS reverted back to NTFS, and I am unable to write to the drive again.
Any suggestions as to what is happening?

Are you 100% positive it is NTFS again (I am seriously doubting it could do that))? Does it say so in Disk Utility, or are you just interpreting it is because you have write problems?

Hi, I also have the same issue. I change the status to Invisible and a later on it is already as "Online", without having even touched/opened Skype. The only way that I see this may happen is that I have the app installed on the smartphone, but before it never had this issue, but from some month ago it started. Any correction or suggestion to work around this issue? Regards

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

External HDD keeps dropping out (without ejecting itself) ~ due to 1 bad partition

Hi,
As stated above, my faithful WD 1TB MyPassport HDD keeps dropping out by itself, ie. icon disappears from my desktop and I get left with a 'eject before disconnect...' message.
At first it would appear to be a cable/USB/corrupt disk issue, BUT..........this is only happening since I tried to delete a partition using DiskUtility, (I have 2 partitions, I'll refer to the one I was trying to delete 'Partition1'), halfway through this my Mac froze. I'm using a macbookpro[Alu][intel][OSX10.8.4] and an iMac[10.8.4 again].
Symptoms....
1. On reset I found that Partition1 showed up in gray in DiskUtility, but not on the desktop.
2. Partition2 shows up fine, on desktop and in DiskUtility.
3. After a minute or so both partitions dissappear and I get my familiar 'you should have ejected' message.
All I want to do now is repair the permissions, verify the disk or delete Partition1...but because the drive keeps disappearing I'm a bit stuck. If I can just get the data from Partition2 before it all drops out then I can cope with binning the rest of the drive.
I've tried....
1. different equipment [cables, different macs (macbook and iMac), hubs and USB ports]
2. using DiskArbitrator to allow the drive to stay connected
3. using KeepDriveSpinning for the same reason
4. smashing my head against a brick wall

It certainly may be. I do not trust Western digital external drives. I've have several of them fail and it was not the physical drive that failed it was the enclosure electronics. Once I removed the physical drive from the WD enclosure and connect it with a IDE/SATA to USB adapter the actual drives were fine and I'm still using all of them.
It also might be your Mac as these WD Passport drives are USB powered and Mac's are notorious for not putting out enough power on the USB ports to complete power up some of these type drives. There are numerous thread on how a warning will come up thjat the USB port has been disabled because something it drawing to much power from it. And that is with nothing at all connected to any of the USB ports.
Only way to test it to take the drive out of the WD enclosure and use one of those IDE/SATA to USB adapters and see if the same thing happens.

Sound output: keeps changing from internal speakers to Apple TV

My iMac keeps changing the soudn output from internal speakers to Apple TV. Why. This makes it a pain. Eveytime I use the iMAc, I have to go into preferences>sound>output and switch to internal speakers. Any ideas how to stop this form happeneing?

TS3171 IO'S and bus names keep changing from session to session

My IO'S keep changing there names back to original factory names after I change names on bus and input output they do not save from session to session .i am in 9.21 ver and using lion any help would be great

To recap (correct me if I'm wrong), two things have to happen for session sharing to work: 1. the session must be passed in a cookie (the same cookie used by appls sharing the session), and 2. the appls must use the same authentication.One solution is for both/all participating applications to use an authentication scheme based on our built-in session management mechanisms that use a cookie in conjunction with our internal sessions table. The schemes may differ in most other repects, e.g., one might use LDAP and the other your own user tables to authenticate. N.B., the no-authentication (DATABASE) scheme does not use a cookie. External HDD permissions differs from Mac and Win

I just bought an external Hard Drive LaCie which asked at the first setup if I was going to use it for Mac, Windows or both.
Of course, I picked both as I will be moving around with it.
I can read, write on Mac. However, I only can read on Bootcamp.
I was not able to change the permissions on the Windows side (right button on the HDD does not display me any permissions options like mentionned in my research).
In my permissions on Mac, everything in Read & Write.
PLEASE HELP, it has been driving me crazy

Easy fix, this will erase everything on it no other way
Connect to OSX, open disk utility, select external drive on left hand side
Click partition tab, select 1 under options - this is KEY - change to MBR
Format will be exfat
Run it

VM NIC keeps changing from Dynamic to Static IP (from a static IP pool)

Back ground:
Having migrated our VM's from 2008R2 and 2012SP1 servers into one 4 node 2012R2 Hyper V Cluster we have a problem with NIC's being changed to Static IP, this in turn gives a range of warning and errors when
moving VM's between the nodes (example during a live migrate or when we put a node in maintenance mode).
The cluster share a Logical Switch, this switch has 1 Uplink. The uplink is a Port Profile called "TrunkPort" and it contains lots of network sites. Each network site links to a Logical Network, each Logical Network is basically a VLAN on our Cisco
router/switch.
We don't have any IP Pools configured since we assign all VM's a static IP manually or they use DHCP provided by our AD servers.
When we change a NIC to from Static IP to Dynamic (there might be power shell to do this), bit in the GUI its painfull as you have to shutdown the VM remove the adapter and create a new one. I does not last long as the system after a few minutes changes
the NIC configuration back to Static IP again. Any idea why and how to stop it?

I feel like some issue with the Fabric configuration.
If you are create a new VM through SCVMM, do you face this issue? (While creating the new VM, on the hardware configuration page, use dynamic IP and Dynamic MAC)
The first event which you listed says about missing VM Network.
No available connection to selected VM Network can be found.
Please check the VM Network to where the VM is connected through SCVMM. And check if all the nodes have the same VM Network.
If thats missing, fixing it might fix few other errors which you mentioned.

Keep changes from abs for new versions of packages?

I use the arch build system (abs) to enable netbeans support in vim by editing the PKGBUILD. I currently have to do this every time I do a full system upgrade through pacman. Is there any way I can have my PKGBUILD prioritzed unless there's a new version? Or maybe have it enable the feature that I want in every update?

I simply keep PKGBUILDs that I customize in a separate directory and when an updated version of app x arrives, I simply rebuild it. Other than that, you can rename your vim's package so that it doesn't interfere with the version from the official repository and append lines "provides=" / "conflicts=" so the system understands its new identity You can also use customizepkg.

External HDD to boot from? Recommendations?

So I just got my amazing MacBook Pro for college and have a 320GB HD going at 5400rpm (sadly). I want to put XP on my computer so I can mainly just play games after "bootcamping." Thing is, I don't want to partion my drive because I don't want to take away space from what I will be using for Mac files. If I understand correctly, I could run Windows off an external harddrive correct? So that is where it brings me.
I only need about 60-80GB storage since I will only be using it for games but I can do more if I have too. Secondly, *If I am playing pretty graphically intense games, will I need/want a 7200rpm HD?* or will 5400rpm do the trick? Lastly will *USB 2.0 be ok or should I get something that supports firewire 400 and/or 800?*
I'm rockin a 2.8Ghz w/ 4gb RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT so I want to embrace the power!

Sorry, no. Windows will neither install on nor boot from an external drive.
If you choose to use virtualization software such as VM Fusion or Parallels, then both of them will enable booting windows from an external drive containing the VM software's virtual drive. This is because starting Windows is under the control of the VM software. However, virtualization is not as satisfactory for heavy duty gaming compared with booting into Windows directly.

MTU keeps changing from 1500 to 576

I wanted to lock the MTU to 1500 for my Internet port so I made the following changes:
In rc.local I placed the command
ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500
In /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd I added:
nohook mtu eth0
Note that the eth0 port is set up to use dhcp in rc.conf.
So it boots correctly, MTU is set to 1500, and Internet access is fine. Sometime during the day the MTU changes to 576.
Does anyone know what process is doing this? Is it something I can change?

576 is the *safest* value, AFAICT, because all IPV4 networks need to support it, as a minimum. And increasing the MTU is a trade-off between responsiveness and throughput, with the risk that MTU negotiation (via ICMP) can fail.
It would be interesting to know the rationale. Maybe it's a case of, "if you have to ask for the MTU, we'll answer with the safest MTU value."

ITunes Library: Keep 2 external HDDs in sync with same music files

I am trying to run iTunes with 2 external HDDs, keeping in sync with each other. One large one for my desktop and a second portable one to take away from home when I need to travel. What is the best way to do this?
What I have done so far is changing the location of my media library via iTunes advanced preferences to the other ext HDD and then consolidating my library, but I noticed that it tries to re-copy the entire library or at least part of it so I end up with music files like:
Back in Black.mp3
Back in Black 1.mp3
I'm sure this has been thought of before and an obvious solution should be available, but I've never been able to find one, so I'd be really glad if someone could tell me how to do this!

What format is the external HDD in? If it's NTFS (= proprietary Windows), then OS X can read it but not write.
Eventually copy all content from the drive to a safe place, the re-format. FAT32 is the format which both Windows and OS X can read and write.

My disconnected external HDD is somehow writing itself to my internal HDD!

Ok, so the other night I got a notification from OS X that I was almost out of disk space, which I found very odd, because the last time this happened was when I had my external hard drive connected, and it was somehow writing itself onto my internal hard drive (it is formatted so that I can use it for both my MBP and the Windows machine at home). You can understand my puzzlement when I got the message, as I did not have my external connected at the time, and had not had it connected since the day before. I had, however, noticed some significant lagging in Safari and Adium, which I found very odd as being the only things affected. As of writing this, I will have cleaned off what has been written to my hard drive twice now (each time 50+ GB!), and I am starting to get very frustrated, with finals and projects coming due very fast now. It appears that the writing starts after I leave Safari/Adium idle for a while, which is very odd, as I can't imagine why either of these programs being idle would initiate this unexplained writing.
I have, however, noticed that there seems to be something invisible in the trash folder that will simply not delete, and has been there since I had the initial problem of my external writing to the internal drive. The Trash constantly tells me there is "1 item" in the trash, but nothing shows up. When I go to Secure Empty I get the little window that tells you the completion status on the emptying, and it always says "4 Items to delete." Even after showing all hidden files and folders, nothing shows up in the trash, despite there always being "1 Item" in there. My guess is that this could be what is causing the writes. What I don't understand is how in the world it managed to store my 100+ GB of stuff on my external in an invisible file that is taking up next to no space on my system, because when I do a scan using Grand Perspective, it doesn't show anything out of the ordinary files and folders that I know should be there. Certainly not 100+ GB of what I have on my external, as I know what I have where, and what are duplicates, and duplicates only show up after the external files have written themselves.
Some additional details for consideration:
Bootcamped hard drive, 15GB for my Windows partition, have only used it to play Roller Coaster Tycoon, and have only connected to the internet on Windows a total of 3 times, each time to download Firefox, iTunes, and Safari, no additional browsing.
External HDD is a LaCie Firewire 400 drive, 320GB formatted for both Windows and Mac (HFS+, right?), haven't connected it in at least two days. Last time this happened it was actually connected, but this time has not been connected when the files have magically appeared on my internal HDD.
There is an invisible file (or multiple files) somehow not showing up AT ALL that is hanging around in the trash. I believe this invisible file(s) to be the culprit, though I'm puzzled as to how. Each time the mysterious writes have happened, Safari/Adium have been idle and open.
If you're wondering how in the world this is happening, don't worry. The first time this happened when my drive was actually connected, I took my MBP to the Apple Store in Indianapolis and totally stumped three employees, including the store manager. If he thought that was odd, wait until I tell him its now writing to my HDD without being connected!

Each time the problem is in the /Volumes/LaCie folder, which is hidden. This leads me to believe its a ghost from my external HDD, rather than from my Bootcamp partition. The 50+ GB that it has written so far has not been duplicates of less than 10GB of information on my Windows partition, it is all files and folders from my approx. 130+GB of information on my external.
In talking with a friend on my floor last night, he thinks it might be a ghost image, as some people have evidently gotten this problem in their email accounts here at the school lately. This ghost image is on my OS X partition, and I'm almost 100% certain it isn't a problem with my Bootcamp partition, as nothing appears in my trash on the Windows side. I have also never used my external with my Windows partition. Like I said, everything being written is from my external hard drive.
