External HDD renames itself to ALL CAPS/adds "1" to name

Hey all. I'd like to consider myself an expert, but every expert runs into a new problem that they've never seen before. Ha.
Anyways, my cat renamed one of my external HDDs while I was at work to nothing (space bar I guess). So I see the issue when I get back home and rename it back. I try to name it back to "My Book" but after I do it renames itself to "MY BOOK." Upon further investigation it is actually naming itself to "My Book 1" but only showing the end user "MY BOOK."
Normally this wouldn't be an issue I could just name it something else and move on. But I have BackBlaze and it's already backed up at least 700GB of about 1000ishGB. If it's not named exactly back to "My Book" I will have to start my online backup all over again, and it's been backing up for MONTHS now, and it's not even done.
I checked permissions, I tried verify/repair, nothing. I was thinking some program had the hdd "in-use." but there really isn't. And I've relaunched Finder and rebooted the machine.
Thanks for any insight, I really appreciate it. I hope this was the best forum to post this topic in. Lettme know if I need to repost it. Thanks.

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups. I'd say this is as good a section for your post as any.
This thread may explain your problem:

If so, dismount your external drive, then use the Finder menu item Go -> Go to Folder to visit "/Volumes" (without the quotes). Delete anything you see there with a name resembling your external drive.

  • HP HD3200 2tb external hdd reformatting itself

I bought the HP HD3200 2tb external hdd just about a year ago and it has worked famously until very recently. Starting about a week ago the drive would randomly stop being read by my computer and after going into disk management the space on the drive has somehow transformed into unallocated.  The only option I have at that point is to reformat the drive and start over.  On top of that if I reformat the drive I then have to run a test disk to adjust the aprtition table otherwise it becomes formatted but simply does not show up in the browser.  This has happened 3 times now and I would like to find a permanent solution before I lose something I can't replace.  Any thoughts on why this has started to happen or how i might fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Take the drive to a Windows PC and install Data Rescue ($100) and let it work on reading the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, outputing the recovered files to another large external hard drive (formatted exFaT on the PC, not on the Mac and not NTFS!)
This is going to take hours to complete, so buy the software upfront and get it over with.
Once it's finished you can hook up the drive to the Mac and it will read it, no NTFS reading/writing software required.
If the PC your using is a Windows XP machine and there is no exFAT, then install the free exFAT for XP from Microsoft first.
Take a second to learn about drives and formatting, it's not wise to use NTFS software as you see now the problem.

  • Backup multiple Macs to external HDD

I have an iMac (OS X 10.8.2) with a new Seagate BackupPlus external HDD attached by thunderbolt.  The external HDD has 5 partitions (all Mac OS X Extended Journaled format). 4 partitions are dedicated back ups for 4 Macs (the iMac connected via thunderbolt to the external HDD, plus 3 MacBookAirs (MBA's)).  The 5th partition is just for storing random data (I realize TM won't back up the data on the same drive as the TM backups, but that's ok).
Following the steps FAQ #22 on the great pondini site http://pondini.org/TM/22.html I was able to set up Time Machine to back up my iMac (with the external HDD physically attached) AND I was able to setup TM on my MacBookAir (also running OS X 10.8.2) to wirelessly back up to the external HDD attached to the iMac.
I am now trying to do the same for wife and kids MBA's (i.e., get them to have TM back up wirelessly to the external HDD that is attached to the iMac on the same network). However, while I can get TM to backup my MBA, I can't get their to work, even though I followed the same steps on their "source" MBA's as I did on mine.  The other MBAs can see the external HDD (attached to the iMac) and even remotely read/write to it (which I did as a test).  TM on their MBA sees and lets me select the appropriate partition on the external HDD, but when I try to do a backup, after a few seconds TM stops running.  It may be worth noting I also have TM backing the MBAs (including wife and kids MBAs) wirelessly to a TimeCapsule too... and that works flawlessly (I am trying to get my MBAs backed up on both my TimeCapsule and an external HDD connected to the iMac, so I have two backups).
The error log from TimeMachine Buddy on my wife's MBA shows:
    Starting manual backup

To try and fix, I have:
    -- rebooted both machines.
--  ran "Verify Disk" on external HDD partition (verify disk finds no issues)
-- checked file sharing on iMac (again, the MBA's can read and write to the external HDD connected to the iMac with no problems so it has read/write/share "access" to the external HDD)
-- did full reset of Time Machine preference on my MBA per pondini.org/TM/A4.html
-- on the MBA's that won't back up wirelessly to the external drive, I can still "see" and select the external HDD (connected to the iMac) in Time Machine
-- tried running TM from different users on each MBA (including adminstrators, of course)
-- have shut off and re-turned on Time Machine
In case it helps diagnose the issue, here's the TimeMachine Buddy log for the my MBA (for which TM successfully completes the wireless backup to the external HDD on the iMac).

So, to make a long story short, even though the external HDD partitions are mounted and can be read by all MBA's....
-- My MBA has no problem backing up (via TM) to the external HDD physically attached to my iMac
-- Other MBA's can wirelessy back up (via TM) to TimeCapsule on my network, but NOT to the external HDD on the iMac (even though they can remotely see/share files on it).
All in all, I'm at a loss as to why it works for one MBA but not others (since I followed same steps to set up the MBA's for TM).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

What Partition Map Scheme does it have? (click the top line for the drive in Disk Utility's sidebar -- it will be shown at the lower-right).  It should be GUID, but should work if it's APM (Apple Partition Map).  If it's MBR (Master Boot Record), a Windows setup and often the way externals come from the factory, that may be the problem.  I've never been sure of the details, but there's a message somewhere that says "not all partitions may be accessible" to Time Machine with MBR.

It doesn't matter what user does the setup, or even does a Back Up Now, since the actual backup runs with "root" privileges (permission to everything).  It sounds like you have the right Sharing setup on the iMac, but be sure each of those Macs is connecting as the right user on the iMac.
I've not done this myself with multiple Macs (I don't have enough hardware); only one Mac backing-up to a shared drive on another.

Looks like you've got some special characters in some names.  I realize two Macs seem to back up ok, but oddly enough, sometimes such characters in names are a problem -- they'll work fine sometimes, but not always.  See #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
(I am trying to get my MBAs backed up on both my TimeCapsule and an external HDD connected to the iMac, so I have two backups).
You might want to reconsider using Time Machine for both sets of backups.  It's prudent to want two separate backups in case one piece of hardware fails.  But what if there's a problem with Time Machine itself, on one (or more) of your Macs?   TM is pretty reliable, but no app is perfect.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for details, and the green box there for some alternatives (some of those may not work over a network. CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync do -- I use CCC locally, in addition to TM, but not over a network).

  • How do I copy a TM backup to an external HDD with an existing TM backup (for another machine)?

    Hi,
My question relates to the use of Time Machine for two different Macs ... I have two Macs: a MacBook Pro (ML) and an iMac (SL). I use Time Machine for both.
Unfortunately, the external HDD (A) drive I use for the backup of my MacBook Pro is on the way out. I am now in a situation where I need to copy this Time Machine backup to another external HDD (B) which I use for the backup of my iMac.
I have decided that I would like to use external HDD B for all future backups of both machines from now on. It is a 2Tb LaCie drive with one partition. Therefore, I would like to copy the Time Machine backup data from external HDD A to external HDD B. Since both TM files/directories have identical names, I am looking for some advice of how to do this without 'deactivating' any of the backups or corrupting them, or screwing with permissions.
In case this is known to be problemmatic, would it be 'better practice' to partition the external 2Tb HDD drive into two partitions, then just use one partition for each backup? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to partitioning the drive? Will this approach make it 'less confusing for Time Machine' and reduce potential problems?
    Any advice would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mark.

Don't bother trying to copy a TM backup file. Just connect the other good drive to your MBP and create a new full TM backup on that drive. I do suggest you create a separate partition on that good drive for each Mac you will be backing up to it.

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • My disconnected external HDD is somehow writing itself to my internal HDD!

Ok, so the other night I got a notification from OS X that I was almost out of disk space, which I found very odd, because the last time this happened was when I had my external hard drive connected, and it was somehow writing itself onto my internal hard drive (it is formatted so that I can use it for both my MBP and the Windows machine at home). You can understand my puzzlement when I got the message, as I did not have my external connected at the time, and had not had it connected since the day before. I had, however, noticed some significant lagging in Safari and Adium, which I found very odd as being the only things affected. As of writing this, I will have cleaned off what has been written to my hard drive twice now (each time 50+ GB!), and I am starting to get very frustrated, with finals and projects coming due very fast now. It appears that the writing starts after I leave Safari/Adium idle for a while, which is very odd, as I can't imagine why either of these programs being idle would initiate this unexplained writing.
I have, however, noticed that there seems to be something invisible in the trash folder that will simply not delete, and has been there since I had the initial problem of my external writing to the internal drive. The Trash constantly tells me there is "1 item" in the trash, but nothing shows up. When I go to Secure Empty I get the little window that tells you the completion status on the emptying, and it always says "4 Items to delete." Even after showing all hidden files and folders, nothing shows up in the trash, despite there always being "1 Item" in there. My guess is that this could be what is causing the writes. What I don't understand is how in the world it managed to store my 100+ GB of stuff on my external in an invisible file that is taking up next to no space on my system, because when I do a scan using Grand Perspective, it doesn't show anything out of the ordinary files and folders that I know should be there. Certainly not 100+ GB of what I have on my external, as I know what I have where, and what are duplicates, and duplicates only show up after the external files have written themselves.
    Some additional details for consideration:
Bootcamped hard drive, 15GB for my Windows partition, have only used it to play Roller Coaster Tycoon, and have only connected to the internet on Windows a total of 3 times, each time to download Firefox, iTunes, and Safari, no additional browsing.
External HDD is a LaCie Firewire 400 drive, 320GB formatted for both Windows and Mac (HFS+, right?), haven't connected it in at least two days. Last time this happened it was actually connected, but this time has not been connected when the files have magically appeared on my internal HDD.
There is an invisible file (or multiple files) somehow not showing up AT ALL that is hanging around in the trash. I believe this invisible file(s) to be the culprit, though I'm puzzled as to how. Each time the mysterious writes have happened, Safari/Adium have been idle and open.
If you're wondering how in the world this is happening, don't worry. The first time this happened when my drive was actually connected, I took my MBP to the Apple Store in Indianapolis and totally stumped three employees, including the store manager. If he thought that was odd, wait until I tell him its now writing to my HDD without being connected!

Each time the problem is in the /Volumes/LaCie folder, which is hidden. This leads me to believe its a ghost from my external HDD, rather than from my Bootcamp partition. The 50+ GB that it has written so far has not been duplicates of less than 10GB of information on my Windows partition, it is all files and folders from my approx. 130+GB of information on my external.
In talking with a friend on my floor last night, he thinks it might be a ghost image, as some people have evidently gotten this problem in their email accounts here at the school lately. This ghost image is on my OS X partition, and I'm almost 100% certain it isn't a problem with my Bootcamp partition, as nothing appears in my trash on the Windows side. I have also never used my external with my Windows partition. Like I said, everything being written is from my external hard drive.
Thanks for the link, checking it out now.

  • How to rename two external hdd's, that are exactly the same brand and model, in order to distinguish?

    Hello again.
First of all excuse me if I mistype anything or fail to use some terms correctly. English is not my mother tongue and I am kind of new to MacBooks.
    Here's my problem.
I've got a macbook pro (yosemite 10.10.1, retina, 15", late 2013, 8gb memory, 250gb ssd), and I am using an external hard drive which I found to be quite good for what I wanted (in case it matters it's the lacie porsche design 2TB USB3).
I wanted one more external hard drive, and since I was satisfied with the one I had bought before, I decided to go for that one again.
Now the thing is that, when I go to finder I see 2 disks with the same name (and their "share" partitions) and I don't know which is which.
I'll try to post a screenshot that might clear things out.
What I would like to do would be to somehow rename the second disk so it appears in the finder as (for example) Lacie1 and Lacie Share1.
Apparently, the system kinda thinks in a similar way as I do.
As you can see below, it has done exactly what I want to do in Lacie's manager (or however it's called), but that does not appear in finder.
(some words are in Greek, but you'll get the point)
So, is there any way I can do something that will make the disks appear like that in finder so I can differentiate among them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Connect the external HDD to the MBP.  Click in the title below the icon two times.  It should then allow you to change the name.
    See this example:
    Ciao.

  • Itunes wont open after windows renamed the external HDD's name

My computer renamed my external HDD's letter designation from F: to G: and iTunes would not open anymore, it would say the itunes folder cannot be found or created and it is required, the original folder should be located within "my music" folder.
I tried everything including reinstalling itunes many time but it would not work, i even tried to delete the whole itunes folder and imported my roomate's itunes folder on my computer and itunes still would not open.
I tried to use windows power toy program to change the special folder address, but the folder "my music" is missing from the list while everything else is on there.
Some help would be greatly appreciated

Well you did far more work and possibly screwed up your pc for an easy fix. You can change the drive letter through the utility called "Computer Management"
If you open windows exploder, you should see a "My Computer" listed in the left window. Rt click on that and select Manage from the context menu. In the left window you should see Disk Management. Here is the list of all drives and their letters. You know unless you added a drive that was already designated F then windows shouldn't rename drive letters without you manually changing it.
When you say you deleted the whole itunes folder what do you mean? Did you delete C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Music? If you cant recreate this folder, then my suggestion would be to use TweakUI to reset the My music folder in the windows OS.

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

  • HT1711 I lost all of my iTunes library on my external HDD.  All of my music is up on the cloud, how do I get it to my new external HDD?

My partner and I travel a lot in our motor home and don't always have access to the cloud, otherwise I wouldn't really care.  However, we have over 200 movies purchased, as well as television shows that we watch while on the road.  A note: I do have all of my music on my iPod Classic, is there a way to transfer it from her to my external HDD?
I don't know if it was coincidence, but it all happened when I did the iTunes Match...
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Recovery Disk wiped out all external HDD data.

On my western digital 1TB HDD, I have created a drive with name I: of size 20GB to take recovery partition. When start with Create Recovery disk and selected drive I:, it creates recovery partition backup however it wiped all other drives data of external
HDD. Now, what should I do to recover?? Can Microsoft help to get my 200 GBs data back due to its big bug??
    Thanks & Regards, Ankur Mutha

It tells you that it's going to delete
all the data on that disk, in quite plain terms.
If your data is irreplaceable, chances are most of it is still there.  There are commercial data recovery services that may be able to help you get it back, but they cost a good bit of money.  Search for "disk drive data recovery" with
    Google or Bing.
I suggest not trying to access the drive yourself as the more you do with it the more likely the sectors containing deleted data may be overwritten.
    Good luck.

  • Not all iTunes Files not showing up on External HDD

My old TC (the flat model from back to 2008 I think it was) broke down the other night so I removed the WD 2.0TB HDD (containing over 30'000 music files) to run this as an external HDD. I had swapped the original 500Gb with a 2TB drive which worked super for a couple of years.
Anyway, before all of this happened all songs showed up on iTunes and each single one could be played correctly from iTunes (without the ! should the file not be found) so all files were located through iTunes to the correct directory. Only one directory for my Music files...
Now, when I connect the HDD through an USB cradle (nothing has been touched on the drive) only a fraction of the files actually show up in the directory which is very odd indeed? I believe it was the same when the thing was actually working but didn't give it a think as it was doing what it was expected to do.
Next step was that I copied the whole HDD over onto my MAC and sizewise all (?) the files came over but still not all are showing...
So, how can I make sure all the files are being included as I want to move them all over to my new 2TB TC?

Thanks Limnos for taking your time with this.
    Here's what happened
    1) All my Music was stored on a TC 2.0TB WD hard disk which I shared with my partner.
    2) All music in iTunes were mapped to this specific location and only this location.
    3) When opening the folder on the TC only a fraction of the actual music folders were available to see (i.e. Artist The Wonder Stuff folder was present and in this folder only 2 album folders were found when in fact there should have been 12)
    4) All songs in iTunes did play correctly so if i wanted to listen to one of the The Wonder Stuff songs they would all play (even albums that did not show up in the artist folder from above).
    5) When clicking show file in finder, the file would show up and then again when going back manually into the folder as above.
    6) TC dies on me. No more power.
    7) Took out the HDD and put it in a cradle to extract the songs.
    8) Right click on the folder shows there are about 35'000 files which sounds right BUT only a fraction of these can be seen.
    9) Now I cannot do the show in finder through iTunes as the directory no longer exists (the TC died and I threw it away, except for the HDD).
    10) The files are on the HDD but I cannot see but a fraction of them when opening the folder...
I hope this makes it a little more clear.
I honesty do not know what to do as I know the files are there but cannot see them and thus map them in iTunes... :-(

    Hello guys,
I have got a empty Seagate 2TB External HDD with NTFS partition And I want to add this as addition storage to my Oracle VM Server in OVS partition.
Also this 2TB USB HDD is solely dedicated to Oracle VM so I am not bothering about Any other operating systems.
To accomplish my this purpose I have gone through so many online forum to convert Seagate ntfs partition to Linux partition. But I couldn't find success.
So Here my questions are :
    1) Is it possible to convert USB HDD ntfs partition to Oracle VM Server supported partition that can run VM Machine on it ?
    2) If Answer is Yes, then Could you explain me how do I do that ?
