External HDD - Standyby / Sleep Problems

Hi everybody,
I use a TC 1 TB, connected to my MacBook using Gigabit Ethernet. The TC is connected to automatically on startup and everything works fine.
As soon as I connect an external USB harddisk to it, I encounter problems when starting the system or waking it up from standby / sleep. It seems that the exernal harddisk enters sleep mode, too, and the TC is not able to wake it up properly. Thus, the startup process hangs, i. e. the MacBook can't be used. When I disconnect the HDD from the TC, things continue smoothly.
Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this issue? I'd really like to use the external HDD as additional space.
Thanks in advance!

Depends on hard disk type used. Change of externalö disk solved the problem.

  • External HDD not sleeping since Mavericks

I have a 2 TB G-Tech HDD which is used by Time Machine.  With Lion as my mini's operating system, the G-Tech (connected by FireWire 800) would sleep periodically, and always when the mini slept.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, the G-Tech doesn't sleep anymore - not periodically through the day and not when the mini sleeps.  The G-Tech will sleep if I shut down the mini, not if the mini sleeps, and not if I eject the Time Machine volume from Disk Utility.
Does anyone know how I can get the drive to sleep again?
    Thanks
    srb

Many have the same issue.  It is not drive specific.  No solution to date but Apple has been notiifed.  USB drives sleep but will not shut down when Mac shuts down like FW drives.  Very strange.

  • Store ALU 3.5" external HDD 1TB PX1369E problems

    *PLEASE HELP !!!*
    Hi everyone!
I've bought this HDD 1,5 weeks ago.
At first (on a XP system) it worked, but when I tried to backup my videofiles (750GB), it stopped after 50GB with the message that the disk is full???
When I tried to connect it to another PC (Vista), the system told me that the drive is inaccessable because I need to format it first.
When I try doing this, it says "Formatting failed" and nothing happens???
I hooked it up to my XP system again and the same thing happens???
These problems are slowly driving me insane %##%$^&%
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Thanx in advance for the help.
    Marc.

    This is strange...
What happens if you copy less files on the HDD? Do you get the same error message?
To be honest I cant say more at the moment but I think your HDD is faulty. I mean you have tested it on another PC and it makes problems too.
Have you talked with the seller? Maybe it can be exchanged

  • Merge iphoto libraries onto an external HDD

We have 3 macs at the house and they all have different Iphoto libraries. I would like to merge them all onto the one Library of the Imac with an External HDD. The problem is that a bunch of the pictures are on more than one of the computers. I was hoping that there was a way to import them but not import the duplicates like when I import from a camera.

You'll need to use iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Libraries. There is no other way to do it without losing versions or metadata.

  • Preview issue with external HDD

    Hi,
I have a problem with Preview and external HDD. Preview doesn't recognize my external HDD, at least the pictures on it. When I try to open any image on External HDD, Preview says, that the file doesn't exist. But when I open the picture with Safari or Pixelmator or Firefox, it opens. What could be the problem?
    Sorry for my bad English.

It didn't help. When I tried to add it on the privacy list, it says, that it couldn't be added because of unknown error. And i noticed, that when I open something in TextEdit or Pixelmator, they wont save it on the External HDD, but when I choose Save As... and from there choose my External HDD, theres no problems.
Messy text but I hope You understand.

  • Quicktime/Snow Leopard/External HDD Sleeping

    Hello,
I recently bought a Mac Mini - very happy with it so far, however i have now got one small problem...
I previously had a PC with WinXP on it, and i stored loads of college and work related odds and sods on my WD 500Gb External HDD. So i connected it to my brand new mac, and it works beautifully....except for when i go to play a video in the Macs built-in Quicktime. The video is being loaded from my External HDD will get about 5-10 mins in then the HDD will go to sleep...like it's not being used....This then crashes Quicktime and Finder comes up with an error message "You should not eject a disk while it is being used...ect"
Cheeky Mac! I didn't eject it, it feel asleep and thus disconnected itself to save power or somethink....
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if there is something really obvious i'm doing wrong.... Can anyone help?

You may want to check with WD and tell them you are using it with a mac. I think it's firmware may not know it's on a mac and puts it to sleep. I know seagate for windows drives on a mac can do this.

  • External Hdd problem with macbook pro 13" i5

I bought a extern hdd last week and i have detect that it doesn´t initialize when my early macbook pro 13" i5 come back from sleep or i turn on the mac. I must reconnect the hdd´s usb cable. My question is... Thats it normal?

Very true that if you don't see it in Disk Utility, you also won't see it on the desktop.
It sounds like you have an intermittent contact somewhere. It might be worth trying a different cable and a different port. Also try that cable with some other device.
No idea if the problem is with the drive's port, the Mac's port, or the cable, but you might be able to chase it down by trial and error. It may be something like a cable that is not fully engaged in the port and not making good contact.

  • Problems with creating a Time Machine backup on external HDD

    Hello!
I tried to make a new Time Machine backup file on my external harddrive today.
Unfortunately it stopt after about 6 or 7 gb with the popup:
''the backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary.  Try again later to back up.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk''
I'm certain that the HDD (Western Digital 1Tb) was correctly formatted (Mac Os Extended (Journaled)). It's the same type as my internal harddrive.
I also have a Time Machine Buddy logfile. Maybe that will help in finding the problem.
Also noticable is that after the backup failure, I can't seem to restore or format the external HDD. Once I connect it to a regular pcc and remove and reinstall the driver, I can use it again.
here is the logfile from the latest backup try:

  • Can't Read/Write to External HDD-Permissions Problem

I have external Seagate HDD, formatted as FAT32, connected to Airport Extreme Base Station. I am unable to Read/Write to this Drive because Finder says I "Don't have permissions" to do so.
Following are details that may be important:
    1. I was able to read/write to this drive under Leopard but lost the right under Snow Leopard, after upgrade to SL.
    2. In Airport Utility, I set up (2) accounts for the External HDD, "Dad" with "Read/Write" access and "Mom" with "Read" access only. I have Guest Account privileges set to "Read Only". It has been this way for (2) years.
    3. Under "Get Info" in Finder, the only account listed is "everyone" with "read" permission only (this is same as Guest Acount in Airport Utility). I am unable to add new accounts because I get error message "The account name is not valid" even though I am using the account name that I am logged in under.
    4. I can change the Permissions on the "everyone" account (in Finder) by changing the permissions on the "Guest Account" in Airport Utility. When I do this, "everyone" in Finder now has "read/write" access but my two accounts, "Dad" and "Mom still don't show up in Finder.
    5. I also upgraded internal HDD to 1Tb and used Restore from Time Machine. I hhad problems with the restore and did new install of Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on how to make Finder show the two accounts I have set up in Airport Utility?

My apologies for bumping this but I still don't have a solution...any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • IMac keep ejecting my 2TB external HDD but in safe boot mode it is totally fine. How to resolve the problem?

    Hi,
I have WD 2 TB external HDD. It has two partitions, one I use for my time machiine backup and one for my personal files and documents. Recently the iMac keeps ejecting the external HDD as soon as it gets connected to the iMac. I tried to reboot the computer in safe boot mode (by holding down the shift key at startup) and found out that problem is not there anymore. I can access my external HDD there and it never ejects the HDD.
It seems like the HDD is fine, the problem is with the iMac. Can anybody please give any solution to this problem?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Allan for your reply!
It makes sence that there must be some log in /start up item which is causing this problem. I went System Preference>Users & Groups> Login items> disabled all the items there to make sure, and restarted the computer but the problem is still there
Is there any other way to stop/configure the log in items?
    Thanks again!

My Imac will not sleep if the external HDD is connected. This just began to occur. If I unplug the drive it goes to sleep. This doesn't happen with any oter USB pereferals.

  • Error -50 problems on external HDD

I am having intermittent problems backing up to a USB external HDD (via ChronoSync). After a couple of days of successful backups they start failing with error -50. When this happens I am unable to write anything to the HDD. Restarting the computer fixes the problem for a day or so, but then it happens again. I do not think that there are any physical problems with the drive or cable because the drive is partitioned (3 partitions) and another partition is used by SuperDuper to make bootable backups and has not failed.

Any suggestions about how to narrow this down will be appreciated. ChronoSync tech support is getting tired of trying to help me and I suspect that it is a Leopard problem.

    Try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
And check here: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device
*" ChronoSync tech support is getting tired of trying to help me and I suspect that it is a Leopard problem. "* Since ChronoSync wrote this software. If it's not Leopard compatible then Apple isn't responsible. Might be able to get more support here: http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/support/support_faq.html

  • Problems transfering iTunes Media folder from one external HDD to another.

    Hey Yinz.
I'm running a MBP 13" 2.7Ghz Intel Core i7...OS X 10.6.8.  Recently the NAS that hosted my iTunes Media folder and library failed.  I recovered the drive from the NAS...a WD Caviar (WD2500JS), which was originally written in XFS.  After substantial effort, I found a process that would enable me to access this drive, and have my Mac read it. This involved a Newer Technologies Voyager Q, coupled with a recent version of (whatever they're calling) MacFuse.  It did so sucessfully.  Now what i want is to take my iTunes Media folder and library off of the WD, ex-NAS HDD (its original location), and transfer it to a new HDD.
I bought a Toshiba Canvio basics usb 3.0/2.0.
Most online tutorials describe dragging and dropping the folder in the new location.  I can connect both HDDs to my MBP, and the transfer will begin...
    But.
After the first few minutes...The Finder will not allow me to complete the transfer.  I keep getting an error code -8084.
I'm almost certain that the new HDD (which i formatted as Mac OS X Journaled in Disk Utility) is not recognizing special characters in certain file names in my iTunes Library.  I have some artists in my folder that require special characters to display their names properly.  I realize these were originally written in a Linux format.
So, is there a way around this...other than changing the filenames?  I really don't want to destroy the integrity of my library by changing a bunch of characters that accurately identify artists.  I guess if all i had was Billy Joel and the Beatles in my library, i'd be Okay...but i don't.
I also read a thread somewhere that suggested that error code -8084 relates to inadequate power distribution of an attached HDD.  This also complicates my problem...as the new external HDD (Toshiba) is bus powered, and lacks an option for a dedicated AC power supply.
While i am able to access and use my iTunes as normal...i'm tied to that WD HDD, which is like, over 5yrs old, and i'm really hoping to get my media off that old HDD, and onto a new HDD with the files intact and accurate.
Any help would be much appreciated and welcome.
    --j.m.
    P.S. I'm running iTunes 10.7

No solid data here but it just seems to me that when I see issues arise about copying data and strange error messages that it has to do when people are using non Mac-formatted drives.  I think they kind of work but once you put them under real pressure you just get problems.   Maybe I'm just thinking of all those vague error -50 "communications difficulties" messages from people trying to copy their libraries to FAT drives.  I wonder if using Terminal to do the copying would help.
Now, there is a difference between placing your media on a drive and your library on a drive.  Your library is your whole iTunes folder along with files such as the critical library.itl file and artwork files, etc.  Media are just what's in your media folder - music, movies, etc.  If you are moving your whole library you can drag and drop copy.  If you are moving your media you can drag and drop but then the new drive has to have the identical drive name as the old one (the old and new pathnames have to remain unchanged).  Usually the best way to move media is to use iTunes' preferences setting to consolidate your media to the new location.  iTunes very easily loses track of files unless you let it do the moving (exception: moving the whole iTunes library folder).
iTunes 10 for Mac: Consolidate your iTunes library - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH990
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    vs.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Sync Problems With Ipod and External HDD

Ive just got a new 4G ipod after returing it because of HDD problems and when i try to sync with itunes, it manages to sync a random number of songs (ill get to that later) often about a 100 and the says "Ipod could not be written or read from". The thing is that i use an Lacie 80Gb External USB 2.0 Powered Harddrive as my Music library. Also it seems not to be USB timeout because ive tried to power both the External HDD and Ipod with an external powered USB 2.0 Hub. Ive found out that the number of songs that syncs each time depends on the songs, because it seems that some songs cannot just be copied (ive tried to copy them through finder and it dosent work either, but moving and/or deleting them works) and they arent in anyway different(what i know of) to the songs that manages to be synced to the ipod. None of the songs have any kind of DRM restrictions.
Ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Use An External USB 2.0 powered HDD as main media storage

Ive had it on my Ibook before and then moved it to the HDD because of Space Shortage, and then just added as ive aquired more music. Idon't Really Remeber but i think it worked before without any hiccups. oh well otherwise i can just delete those files because theyre only single files here and there. but its quite irritating because they don't seem to have any kind of corruption.
