External hdmi 1080i vs 1080p

1) try as I might, the MBA only gives choices up to 1920x1080 (interlaced) and does not give an option for 1080p on an external monitor.
2) is there a published specification for the MBA which specifically states that 1080p is NOT available? Everything I have found simply states "1920x1080" without specifying interlace/non-interlace.
thanks for any pointers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried it with two different external monitors with the same results: (1) the pull down menu does have two separate 1920x1080 choices (as you noted) neither is designated 1080i or 1080p -- when one is selected, the monitor reports 1080i, when the other is selected the monitor reports 1080p !
next question(s): (1) why is the "prefs" UI broken? (2) why does the drop down menu fail to distinguish between 1080i and 1080p ?

  • No BIOS access on external HDMI monitor

setop: T440S (20AQS00500)  with Ultradock and external HDMI monitor
Today I updated the Firmware of my Ultradock to Firmware version:   2.17.000 to resolve the famous 3sec blackscreen that is describes in so many places. That did in deed resolve that problem
I also updated my BIOS using the Lenovo Solution center to GJET74WW (2.24)
But now, when I boot, I do not see any of the BIOS diagnostic on my external monitor.
If I hit F1  the external monitor still stays black.
That would be harmelss. But I also run Truecrypt and the Truecrypt prompt does not show on the external monitor.
I have to blindly type my Truecrypt password and then Win7 shows nicely on the external screen.
Our of the dock I went into the BIOS and made sure the display is set to "docking station".
    Any ideas ?

There should be a BIOS toggle for display priority at boot. I'm not sure if it still exists in the T440s or exactly where it is though.

  • 1080i versus 1080p display - Mini Mac & 46" LC-46D62U SHARP monitor?

We solved our scattered image resolution problem on our new 46" SHARP LCD monitor running on a mini mac (Thanks to BSteely's recommendations).
But we are working with a 1080i resolution by lack of having the option available to set it to 1080p. The mini mac doesn't offer it by default. We are recommended to use switchResX because there is something in the Intel driver for the GMA 950 graphics that picks up on the fact that it is connected to a TV and not a normal monitor that causes it to limit the mini's output to 1080i.
Can anyone or you BSteely share your experience with the software? Is it free? Is it worth it? Will be have more of our money worth: meaning more visible quality going through the process of switching from 1080i to 1080p? Any risk for us to mess up the resolution we were able to obtain so fare (after lots of struggling)?
What is the real difference between 1080i and 1080p? Why are TV's with the 1080p capability more expensive?
Yes, I am a novice in the field. Whole new world. Exiting but confusing. Thank you for all the possible enlightenment.
    Deborah

Probably you are dealing with two seperate issues. One is handled from the TV's side and one is handled from the mini's side. First, on the TV, set the View Mode to "Dot by Dot". Refer to the TV's user guide for how to set that mode. That should get rid of jaggy artifacts you mention.
Second, on the mini, it is widely reported that 1080p does not always show up within Displays preferences as expected. Or sometimes 1080p is in fact being sent even when the mini says the resolution is 1080i. It's hard to say which is the case.
Those times when 1080p is not offered as a selection within Displays preferences, others have had success to get it to show up by going into Displays preferences and selecting the "Show displays in menu bar" option. Then, under the resulting menu bar icon that looks like a display, scroll down to "Number of Recent Items" and select 5, or even try 10. For some people, doing this has caused a second 1080 resolution to show up, where the second one is 1080p. A reboot may be required to get this to work.
To check if the mini is outputting 1080p or not, I believe you can check this from the TV by hitting the DISPLAY button on the TV's remote. It should report what it thinks is the format of the incoming video signal. Good luck.

  • HT1338 How to setup an external HDMI screen with a Mac Book Air

How do I setup an external HDMI screen with a Mac Book Air? I am using an Apple accessory Moshi cable interface with a Samsung Syncmaster screen SB24B300 and I am unable to get any response. Thank you.

You need to connect it to the computer using either USB or Thunderbolt. Setup is simply prepping the SSD:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.

  • How to put a movie from 360p to 1080i OR 1080p

I got the movie Avatar that I downloaded from itabmovies.com (before the site was closed down) and its playing in 360p is it possible I can convert the movie to play in 1080i OR 1080p for my iTouch 4??? I can either use iMovie, Windows Movie Maker or i can use Handbreak

I recommend using Handbreak.... even thou its mainly use for ripping DVD movies.... you can also use it as a converter.... just change the fps and keep it as a MP4 file. Make sure your NOT using AVI format otherwise you will use up a ton of memory.

  • Using my mid 2012 MB Air with an external HDMI monitor question.

Am wanting to use my mid 2012 MacBook Air 13 inch running Mavericks with an external HDMI monitor.
I've got a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter which I've plugged in and am able to redirect the sound to my speaker equipped external monitor by choosing it in the sound output preferences box.
BUT I've got a picture displayed on both my air and monitor.
My question - is it possible to switch the display so that it only shows on the external monitor - I'm only wanting to display the same picture on both displays.
Finally is it possible to show one screen on the Air and a different one on the HDMI Monitor.
    Thankd

Try  > System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement > Mirror Displays (or not).

  • Windows 10 upgrade does not detect external hdmi monitor

Hi I have just upgraded my laptop yoga 2 11 to windows 10.I use an external hdmi monitor at the office desk with the previous windows 8.1 and no problems, but once I upgraded two hours ago to windows 10I my external monitor is not detected by windows10. what should i do?? Best regards, Martin

I have ENVY 15 K101TX; and I'm facing the same problem after upgrading to WIN10.Whenever I try to shut down the Laptop, it just doesn't shutdown completely. The screen goes blank but the power light and fan stays on. I have to press & hold to shut down the laptop. And we all know it's not a solution. And it also doesn't come back after sleep mode. I have to force shut down and start it again.I have checked all the power options and have tried all the things possible.Any one?

  • Need some advice turning 1080i to 1080p

I shoot in 1080i50 with canon legria hfr 106. Got IM11 today. I import at full size. Interlacing artifacts appear when I watch the clips inside IM11. I made a small test project and exported it to mobile me. The interlacing artifacts were gone, but the quality of the clips weren´t particurlarly good.
Then I exported the project with the 1080p preset. Watched in on my macbook pro with quicktime. The interlacing artifacts were still there. Im gonna test tonight to burn the 1080p preset using Toast and watch it on my HD TV to see how the quality is.
As I understand form previous posts, I should make the 1080i into 1080p before I start editing. I am absolutely green when it comes to this stuff. How do I transcode 1080i to 1080p before I start editing? I have Mpeg streamclip, but I need a detailed instruction.

Do you see the title of this post? *NO you don't* if you do what I say.
You've got to get progressive BEFORE editing.
Is there a "switch to progressive" button I need to click on import for my interlaced footage that I don't know about?
There is not a need to do anything but export out as my post suggests. Can you elaborate on what the problem is with my solution?

  • Mac Mini G4 Unsupported Video Format DVI to HDMI 42 Phillips 1080P LCD TV

When connecting my Mac Mini G4 to my 42" Phillips 1080P LCD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable I get a message on the TV "Unsupported Video Format" message. I can connect my PowerBook G4 using the same cable and it connects great.
One thing I have noticed is when connecting my Mini via DVI cable to my 17" LCD monitor the screen is a fated red. But using a VGA cable the screen is fine. I don't know if this is having to do anything with the issue of connecting to my LCD TV.
    Any suggestions?

Make sure the connections are good and tighten down the thumb screws on all connectors. If two monitors are giving problems with DVI, it could be there is a hardware problem with the DVI port on the mini.
Also, try starting in Safe mode (boot while holding down the shift key) and see if you get a useable screen in that case. If you still get the unsupported video format message, then that would further suggest some hardware problem with DVI.

  • Why can't I get an external HDMI display after upgrading to Maverick?

I've been hunting all over for an answer to this problem.  I upgraded to Maverick in the fall and recently discovered that I can no longer get a picture on an external TV via Thuderbolt + HDMI.  I've used new connectors and cords.  Apparently others are having similar issues after upgrading.
I've tried the SMC reset option, but it has not rectified anything.  I've unchecked the "display as separate spaces" option.  Nothing seems to work and I've searched all over the support community for the answer, which can be extremely daunting.

You said you have a workstation with 4 drives, not a notebook.
And you have not reformatted in years.
Just clone Mac OS X Lion (and Lion Recovery) to anotehr hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Cloning as a Backup Strategy
Or backup and erase the DRIVE, like WDxxxxx and not your "Macintosh HD" volume and restore.
Reformatting is a good idea when moving to a new OS and lot of changes to partition structure go on each time, sometimes even mid-stream of a version.

  • Mac Mini does not display HDMI 1080i in full screen on TVs

I have a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini that I am having problems getting video to display 1920 x 1080 @60hz in full screen on my Sony XBR 1080p HDTV. The Mac is connected to the TV via a DVI to HDMI cable. The Mac recognizes the display as a "Sony TV"
When the Mac first starts up the entire TV screen is filled with the grey Apple startup screen, but when the Mac fully boots and gets to the desktop, the screen has shrunk so that it is slightly off the screen on the left, and has about 80% of the screen filled horizontally and about 90% vertically. I have tried all combinations of the overscan selection on the Mac and on the TV, but they make the image about 120% of the size of the screen so the top, bottom and sides are cut off.
I have tried 2 different 1080p HDTVs with the Mac Mini and get the same results for both TVs.
Now here is the thing that makes me believe that there is something funky with the Mac Mini. If I take my 2.16 GHz Macbook Pro 15" Intel Core 2 Duo and plug its DVI display port into the Same DVI to HDMI cable that is connected to the same Sony TV, it displays full screen with no problems.
What can I do to make my Mac Mini display properly?

    Thanks for the ideas.
I did as you suggested, but the only 1920x1080 selection shown was one for "NTSC" which I would think is interlaced. This was after a reboot. All of available resolutions are labeled with "NTSC". When I look at the screen resolutions on my MacBook Pro when it is connected to the TV, they are labeled as "Interlaced". On both computers there are no progressive scan selections.
As an interesting note, regardless of what display resolution I select, the display area on the TV screen remains the same which is about 80% of the screen offset to the left. When "overscan" is selected, this mode enlarges to image to about 120% of the screen and cuts off the menu bar etc. However the MacBook fills about 98% of the screen in "normal" mode.
If there was a less aggressive Overscan mode or more aggressive normal mode, that would fix the issue.
Any other ideas on how to adjust this?

  • External hdmi monitor connection causes airport wireless to fail

When I connect my 24" iMac (early 2009) to my Samsung 40" LCD TV using an HDMI display adapter and an HDMI cable, my built-in airport wireless connection stops working.
The airport will see wifi connections, but constantly prompts for the WPA password and refuses to connect. Occasionally it will connect, but only for a short time, and "ping times" to my router (small network packets) are large and sporadic.
This only happens when the adapter/cable are completely connected to the TV, and the TV is on. Of course this makes watching hulu.com on the TV very difficult!
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, resetting SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac and reconnecting using a precise procedure. You should disconnect ALL cables from the iMac when you do this. If you have been using a power strip to connect your power cord, try connecting directly to a wall outlet for this test. Power up with nothing connected except for the power cord, then connect only the keyboard/mouse. After confirming everything is working, including the AirPort connection, connect the external display. Does the problem recur or not?

  • External HDMI Monitor Slows Down Macbook Pro to Unbearable Speeds?

I have my 2011 17" macbook hooked up via a Moshi HDMI adapter to a 24" Acer 1080p monitor... While the image shows properly it makes the computer completely unuseable. I can't play videos and it lags up the machine really bad. I don't get it... i paid $3000+ for this machine and it can't output a smooth HDMI signal without crushing the system? Is this happening to anybody else? Any solutions?

Yeah i was just about to post the Activity monitor before / after results.... here is what happens.. the results are stunning to say the least:
    PRE-Thunderbolt-->HDMI Adapter:
    CPU:
    User - 1.5%
    System - 2.5%
    Idle - 96%
    Memory:
    Free : 5.9 gb
AFTER PLUGGING IN THE ADAPTER AND HOOKING UP THE MONITOR
    CPU:
ALL CORES JUMP TO 80% +
    %USER: 4.25
    % SYSTEM: 77.33%
    % IDLE : 16.70
    Memory remains stable.
    THE PROBLEM IS OBVIOUS.
Something is causing the system CPU to become completely innefecient. It takes about 10-30 seconds for this proccess to occur. At first, the CPU remains low, but as soon as any content hits the second screen every core jumps to being 70-80% occupied, and this is JUST with firefox running.
Any help? Could apple store do anything to help me out?

  • Viewing shows with an external HDMI TV

Running FCP on a 27" iMac and would like to hook up an external TV to view shows from within FCP. Currently outputting then reviewing on an HDMI TV because I don't get an accurate view of the show from either viewer in FCP. Can I hook up an HDMI TV using a Mini Display (plugged into a Thunderbolt port) to HDMI cable AND get an accurate representation of the video with this setup? This would save so much time.

Yes, you can output to your HDMI TV using a mini displayport to HDMI adapter. Note that no all adapters carry audio, so make sure you choose one that does.
The TV will appear like another monitor your mac can use. You can elect to Show Viewers on Second Display and then put the viewer on full screen.
