External HDs not recognized by iMac when using USB cable

I just bought a new iMac & plugged in my two Western Digital 1tb drives using the supplied USB cables and neither of them are recognized by my iMac.
I've been using both of these drives with my other G5 iMac using the firewire cables & have not had any issues. I also purchased an adapter (USB -->firewire 800) and each hard drive mounts ... but neither will mount using the USB connections.
Any suggestions as to how I can get the second drive to work using the USB cable ...
Thanks,
Brent

+do I need to move the contents of the external drive off the unit before the partition?????+
YES! Absolutely! The partitioning process erases the drive, so you need to temporarily copy data onto your old Mac.
+how do I achieve this? I'm guessing there's a piece of hardware that I'll need to connect the two hard drives together and then feed another line into the iMac ... correct?+
All you need are firewire cables (hard drive to hard drive to iMac). See Dennis' link and the excerpt here:
+Question 7: Can FireWire devices be connected in a daisy chain?+
+Answer: Yes, and if the devices are designed according to the FireWire standard, they can be turned on and off as needed. For example, all devices don't need to be powered on to use the last device in the chain. For the best result, and to avoid overstressing the FireWire port, connect one FireWire device to the Macintosh, then add one device at a time to the chain. Avoid plugging in live power adapters into devices connected to the chain.+
And congratulations on your new iMac - you'll love it; I got mine about a month ago.

  • Format and Partition Task Sequence Not Working As Exprected When Using USB Media

    Task looks like this.
Had been working on PXE based task sequence, but when I use USB media, it only makes a single partition that is around the size of the USB thumb drive.
How does this need to be changed so that it makes a C drive partition that is 80% of the total local disk space and a D drive that uses the remaining disk space when using USB boot media?

If you choose to create a "custom" partition configuration like the one above, then you are responsible for creating any extra required partitions like a BitLocker boot partition.
Additionally, if you are deploying on a uEFI machine, then you will also need to create the correct uEFI partitions.
Generally I discourage creating extra partitions.

  • Large external HDs not recognized by Windows 7 64-bit

    Hi,
I'm trying to see if someone else out there has had this same problem have has been able to solve it.
    I have an HP Pavilion DV6 - NQ615AV Entertainment Center PC. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1.
I have several external USB hard drives (80GB, 320GB, 500GB) and several USB memory keys (2GB, 14GB) that work well with this computer.
I recently got a couple of 1TB and 2TB external USB hard drives, and they are not being recognized by this computer. The hard drives work well with other systems (Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit, Windows XP), so they are ok. The drives also work on my computer if I boot from an Ubuntu memory key.
The behavior I see is that Windows gives the usual "Installing device driver sofware". As it does that, it correctly identifies the drive as, for instance, "My Book 1140". After a while it comes back with "Device driver software was not successfully installed". When I check the Device Manager, the USB hard drive is listed under "Other Devices" with the same name (e.g., My Book 1140), but there is no entry under USB Mass Storage Device or Disk Drives.
I have tried many tips from other websites, from deleting temporary files under C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore to power cycling the hard drives (they all have external power supplies), to "unhide" empty drives from Windows Explorer. The drives do not show under Disk Management, so I cannot attempt to assign a different letter or initialize them. Again, they work fine on other systems, they are properly formatted, and they can be read/written to (on other systems).
The one difference I noticed between a working and a non-working situation is that, on other systems, when the external hard drives properly show under Disk Drives in the Device Manager, the Driver Details tab shows two drives loaded: disk.sys and partmgr.sys. But when I look at the same tab in my non-working system, it show the drives that are recognized (the older, smaller external drives, and the internal SATA drive) have an extra driver: hpdskflt.sys
Has anyone else been able to use newer, larger USB external hard drives with this model? Is there a limitation in the hardware that would make those newer drives not compatible? As my smaller hard drives and memory keys still work under Windows 7, there's no issue with the USB ports themselves, just with these specific newer, larger hard drives.
I've sent an email to HP support, but I'm not hopeful because they only provide tech support to devices under warranty, or under a busines service agreement. I don't meet any of the two requirements.
The support pages for Western Digital and Seagate (my new external hard drives) say that there are no extra drivers needed, and that Windows 7 64-bit should recognize them right away.
The support pages for Microsoft say that if a driver is not installed properly or found, the device manufacturer should be contacted.
So that only leaves Internet forums as a source of ideas and suggestions.

Working solution on win 7 32 & 64 with driver lj1010serieshb-vista, did as follow:
connected printer, windows tried to auto install and failed, device was listed as unspecified.
googled for lj1010serieshb-vista(32/64).zip driver, downloaded from hp website, unzipped and extracted files.
Start > Run > PrintManagement.msc , then Print Servers > Localhost , right click on drivers > add driver > next > choose x86/x64 > next > have disk > browse to location of extracted
files, select hpc1015e.inf > ok > select hp laserjet 1010 hb > next > finish
Repeat above process and this time select select hp laserjet 1015 hb > next > finish , this step is needed as stated on previous post some files are missing on the 1010 driver and adding 1015 fixes the problem.
Now back to Devices and printers , right click on the unspecified device > troubleshoot > then will ask to search for driver, select "apply this fix" , it will find and install the correct driver from previous step > then will ask to set printer
as default, select "apply this fix" > then will ask if you want to share printer, select "skip this fix" if you don't want to share > close troubleshooter.
Now i have perfectly working printer, 'preferences'  is working and not crashing win explorer and printer doesn't hung.
I guess you could first add the two drivers to your system before
connecting your printer and it would install perfectly but who would though this old printer would not work trough windows update.
thanks to the people who went by trial and error to find a working solution.

  • IPhone not recognized in iTunes when using WiFi sync

I have found that my iPhone is frequently not recognized when using WiFi sync.  The only way to sync my phone when that happens is to use the old fashioned way--connect it to my computer via USB.  Then the phone is recognized and syncs fine.  The device shows even when I take my iPhone off power.  But when I close iPhone and later reopen it and plug in my iPhone to power, often it is not recognized.  I've tried everything I can think of but nothing works.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same problem.  It was working just fine and then just mysteriously stopped showing up in iTunes (my iPad still shows up & syncs via wifi just fine--it is just my iPhone).  Someone please reply soon, this is driving me nuts! Thanks in advance!!

  • Ipod touch 2G not recognized by itunes when using wifi

I can connect to internet by wifi through network set up with Linksys. iPod recognized by network, Norton, and set as Full Trust. Windows Firewall turned off. iTunes does not show connection to ipod with wifi in iTunes. Tried everything on Apple webpage regarding connection. I can't use Documents to Go, Remote, unless connected to itunes by wifi. Any suggestions?

I am not trying to connect the ipod to the internet. it is already connected to it via wifi. I have no problem with that. I am trying to get iTunes to recognize the ipod through wifi, and not through a direct USB connection. Documents to Go will only download to the ipod through a wifi connection to iTunes. It will not download through the USB connection. If that is not possible, is there another app that I can download my Word or Excel documents, and work on them on my iPod?
    Thanks.

  • Firewire drives not recognized on iMac even with Apple cable adaptor

Got new iMac.  All my files are on Firewire 800 external hard drives.  iMac won't recognize  Firewire drives even with Apple cable adaptor so cannot access old files.

I suspect a power issue, are these drives Bus powered or do they have AC power?
Not that AC power hasn't failed also...

  • My iPod is not recognized by anything when connected USB. Firewire works.

Ok, so I haven't been able to put songs on my iPod for at least a month now... reason being, my computer doesn't recognize it. Hooking it to USB gives me this error message:
    http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/1397/ipoderror28ea.jpg
However, it charges with Firewire (although obviously I can't put songs on it that way). What should I do?

I have exactly same error although my iPod version is 2.3. Initially got the error when I did not disconnect correctly (pulled USB out!!) I have successfully installed a new USB 2.0 & tried the reset options short of totally wiping my iPod clean but still get the Windows malfunction error. Once I get all my music backed up I will try the total wipe but if anyone has answer in meantime then all the better

  • New 30g iPod Not Recognized By iTunes/Mac Using USB 2.0

Hey there folks . . . I just came home today with a shiny new 30GB iPod, but am having a little trouble in getting it to behave properly. The iPod doesn't show up in iTunes 7 or the Finder when I connect it to a USB 2.0 port. It recognizes the thing on a USB 1.1 port, but this is a very unpleasant way to fill a 30GB hard drive, so, hopefully there's some silly thing I'm overlooking . . .
The USB 2.0 controller is functioning fine and dandy it seems, my flash card reader, mouse, and keyboard all function without a hitch when attached to either of my 2 USB 2.0 ports. When the iPod is plugged in, it charges the battery, and it shows up in the System Profiler under the USB High-Speed Bus just as would be expected . . . but Finder doesn't mount it, and iTunes doesn't recognize its existence.
I'm running MacOS X 10.3.9 on an older G4 PowerMac, and I did upgrade to iTunes 7.
    Any ideas? :-/

Try updating to the latest version of QuickTime http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime713.html Then reattach i-pod and let it update the videos & or podcasts..

    I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Before you reinstall the Apple software, also remove iCloud vi Control Panel Remove programs. The reinstall the Apple programs
New cable and different USB port?
Runs this and see if the results help with determine the cause

Try resetting it: hold the on/off and home buttons 10-20 seconds until you see the Apple logo (ignoring the off slider that appears first), then release.  If it won't reset you may need to put it in recovery mode and restore it as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.

  • Can iMessage be used with non iOS 5 users, ie non-apple users. My new i-pad 2 error message says these contacts are not recognized by imessage when I try to text some of these contacts.

Can iMessage be used with non iOS 5 users, ie non-apple users?
My new i-pad 2 error message says these contacts are not recognized by imessage when I try to send them a text.

So that means that I can send text messages through my i-phone to reach non iOS 5 users, but not through my i-pad 2.

  • External HDs not mounting

My OP is Lion 10.7.5. I have two external HDs: one LACIE 1T which I use for Time Machine and a IOMEGA 500M which I use for my photos. Both of them stopped mounting when I upgraded to Lion. I can see them both in Disk Utility but  grayed out. They both Verify fine in Disk Utility. When I tried to mount them with disk utility it does not work. I have tried everything that I could find here including Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC. I also tried the terminal hack with sudo and still no solution. I can't believe both drives have been damaged at the same time. Any other potential solution?

    anybody?

    Howdy AndieKanaras,
It sounds like your iPhone is being recognized everywhere but in iTunes. I would use the troubleshooting for that issue in the following article, named:
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac

  • HT4061 my computer is not recognizing my iphone4s when plugged in

I got a new computer, (HP  Pavillion)  and it is not recognizing my iphone4s when plugged in. What to do?
    nnurlaw

You could try the PRAM and SMC reset.
Are there any other USB devices plugged into the machine, if so unplug them.
As a work around you could use a powered USB hub until you can get the problem fixed.
Use the system report to check on any anomolies in the power and USB sections.
