External Image Editor bug?

Trial version 10.1.3 I think...
Preferences, touch up, chagne external editor to Paint.NET.
Try to edit image. Paint.net says it cant load the image.
So I wrote a quick program to see what parameters were being passed. Insetad of passing a pathname to an image, Acrobat is passing the name to the selected exe.... so Paint.NET is getting:
c:\program files\paintdotnet.exe c:\program files\paintdotnet.exe
instead of expected:
c:\program files\paintdotnet.exe c:\some temp path\someimage.jpg
Has anyone successfully used the external edit function with anyting other than photoshop?

Ok, I figured it out.
I have to click on the various image extensions column and
associate them
with Fireworks.
Duh...

• Saving JPEG from External Image Editor (CS2)?

When I purchased Aperture I'd hoped it would store three copies of each photo; the original untouched RAW and a Photoshopped TIFF and JPEG, but 70mb+ TIFF files appear to be taking their toll. I will probably store them in another app, leaving the RAW and JPEG in Aperture.
Anyway, to cut to the question.
I send a 16 bit TIFF to CS2 directly from Aperture using the 'External Image Editor' option. When I've done all of the necessary work in CS2, save the 16bit TIFF, and then convert to 8 bit and 'Save As' to JPEG.
Aperture appears to be able to automatically retrieve a TIFF file, but not a JPEG.
Does anybody have any ideas of a way round this?
Currently, I'm saving JPEG's to my desktop, then re-importing into Aperture. I hoping it doesn't need to be quite so long winded!

Fast is a relative term. However, I will say this: I shoot primarily RAWs, and my largest megapixel count is the 11 megapixels of my Canon 1Ds. On my PowerBook I felt Aperture was fast enough for image sorting and metadata editing, but was a bit jerky and slow for image adjustments. Also, the PowerBook video card was not up to the task of switching views because it would regularly get scrambled and then settle down when switching views. I bought a MacBook Pro C2D w/2GB RAM and I'm very happy with the performance of Aperture on this machine. Adjustments are smooth. Even loading the Masters from 7200 RPM external drive seems much snappier on the MBP.
I haven't had much time with Aperture on my G5 Dual 2GHz w/3.5GB RAM because I severely fractured my ankle shortly after I bought Aperture and only one hour after I arrived home with my new Raedon X800XT graphics card. (My G5 is up a flight of stairs in my studio and I have to sit with my leg elevated 24/7.) I've read in this forum that this combination is workable, but perhaps I'll find myself wishing for a MacPro. Given how happy I am with the MBP, I can't imagine being unhappy with a MacPro.
I keep Activity Monitor running on my machine and have set it to load on boot. I set the icon to show the memory usage pie chart. I keep an eye on it as I run my programs. I only keep essential programs open when I am working in Aperture.
I have found that smaller projects are quicker. Like you, I originally had multiple thousands of images in projects. Then I changed my structure to have many projects under blue folders. My projects are all under 1,000 images now.
BTW, have you seen this post?

• Problems with animated masks and external images

I have an instance of a movieClip on the stage and I load an external JPG into the movieClip.  The movieClip is masked by a layer that begins animating on a certain frame.  As soon as I reach that frame my externally loaded JPG disappears.  The movieClip doesn't mind being masked, but as soon as the mask animates the external image goes away.  The mask animation is shapes drawn frame by frame.
It is interesting to note that if I create a Class and load the JPG into the movieClip (or do this in a constructor) I do not experience this problem - it is when the JPGs are loaded into an instance of the movieClip that lives on the stage that I encounter this. Unfortunately that is not an option in my project (since I have to get the path for the JPG from an xml file I am loading).
Could someone please help me with this?

that's a flash bug.

• "Open in external sample editor" seems to be broken?

Hey all,
I'm hoping that someone can help me figure this out. I'm using Logic Pro X 10.0.7 in conjunction with Adobe Audition CS6. This problem seems to happen intermittently, and on some of my machines, but not others. I've also witnessed it on others' machines as well.
When I try to open a region of audio in the external sample editor (For which I've set up Adobe Audtion CS6 to do destructive edits), I can manage to get the file to open correctly in Audition. HOWEVER, when I make my edits in audition and try to SAVE the file in Audition to send it back to Logic Pro X, I get an error message that the file cannot be saved because it is "in use by another application". It's almost as if Logic doesn't release the file to the external sample editor in order for it to be overwritten, and updated.
When I switch back to Logic, after I get the error message, Logic "refreshes" the waveform information, but it's still unchanged, because the external sample editor can't save the changes that I've made to the region. Can anyone relate? Offer me useful tips on how to fix this? Is it a bad configuration on my end, or just a bug in Logic?
Thanks,
Steve

Ok so I think I might have figured this out on my own... Apparently, if you highlight a region, and the region is open in Logic's Editor window, while you're trying to edit the region with an external editor like Audition, it will throw the "file is in use by another application" error, when you try to save the changes you've made in the external editor. I found that if I close the "Editor" window in Logic, before trying to open the region in Audition, Audition is then able to save the changes to the file.

• Score Editor bug: syncopating a note disturbs line layout

In the example below, the instrumental part with max 2 bars per line has been created with the Layout Tool, and then the selection saved as a Score Set ( which i hope locks all the page details in place).

I then noticed that the red circled note is not displayed correctly - it should be a dotted eighth note and duly click on it with my Syncopate note command.
This then produces the following effect: it crunches up the bars and disturbs the line layout which was already set, cramming 3 bars onto the line above as in the example below.

Any solutions appreciated/workflow suggestions.. or is this just "..another L8 Score Editor bug.. wasting more of 2009"
PS Any suggestions as how to get the images to display in the post - as opposed to appear a link? cheers

i should be enjoying my holiday but i couldn't help myself...
there are a couple of fixes for this.
first, try cutting the regions somewhere to force a redraw.
second, if no form of cutting or reformatting works, try copy and pasting the midi into a fresh autoload on the intel.
particularly if the file was created pre 7.2. there can be compatibility issues between ppc and intel.

• How to add external images onto a control and still be able to resize

Hello,
I'm a LabVIEW newbie.  I'm trying to customize the appearance of my VIs, and one of the things I like to do is to import external image and paste it onto the faceplate of the gauge indicator.  I've followed the instruction in the Labview application note using the control editor and was able to paste the picture into indicator.  But when I use it in the front panel and resize the gauge indicator, the image (added as a decoration) doesn't resize together with the indicator.  My questions are:
1. How to add external images onto a control/indicator and still be able to resize the image automatically when I resize the control/indicator?
2. How to "add" a new part to an existing control/indicator?  It looks like I can only customize/modify the existing parts of the control/indicator in the control editor.
Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

1/ Do not use the image as an added decoration. Instead replace part of the control with the image. Tis is illustrated in the attached vi : the arrow was pasted as a decoration, and also used to replace the slide cursor. Changing the control size do not affect the decoration, but changes the cursor.
2/ What do you mean by adding new parts to a control. We have just seen that it was possible to modify a control. Now, if you want to include additionnal functionnality, that's another story. You can replace parts of the control, and this can give interesting results.  You can edit a slide control, and replace the numeric indicator by another control, including a numeric indicator, that you can replace with etc...
But there, it still the same info displayed under different forms. If you want to have several independant functions on the same control, such as a string display and a boolean and a numeric indicator, then that's a job for a cluster...

• Default image editor

Hi guys
is there any way where I can select photoshop as my default image editor? Every time I launch captivate I have to select edit with... and once I select photoshop it will remain for that session, but clears at the end of each session.
Seems minor but a it is little irritating.
C'mon RodWard, gimme some good news.......

I wish I could be the bearer of good news...but it would seem not to be.
I've just tested this in Cp4, Cp5 and Cp5.5.  They seem to all behave differently.
In Cp4 if I select Adobe Photoshop as my editor for an image in the library, the next time I open Cp it's still shown as the editor.  But you can only have one graphics editor at a time.
In Cp5 if I choose Photoshop as by graphics editor it won't remember it the next time I open Cp5.  But, for some strange reason that I haven't been able to determine, it WILL remember another image editor I've used previously, Adobe Fireworks.
And finally, in Cp5.5 no matter which editor I use it won't remember any of them the next time I open the app.
Quite bizarre really.  I'm prepared to believe that Cp5, given that it was a total rewrite of the app, might have missed some of the functionality found in Cp4 (there were other such cases).  However, I find the fact that Cp5.5 offers even less than it's predecessors a bit puzzling to say the least.  At this rate Cp6 would be on track to do away with allowing you to choose an image editor altogether.
Perhaps one of the Adobe Captivate dev team can chime in and explain to us what's going on here.  Is this a known bug?

• Do I need an external raw editor with Aperture?

Sorry for the simple question - I'm an unsophisticated photographer just dipping toes in RAW stuff
Does Aperture have the same functionality as the external RAW editors like Sony Image Data Converter and the various Canon tools etc?
What I am asking is - do I need to install these and use them as external editors or can I achieve mostly the same thing in Aperture on the raw/arw images?
I don't agonise over the detail but I would like to tinker and experiment, but having an extra tool is a bit annoying.
Cheers, Z

Aperture is a generic third party raw converter, like Lightroom, Aftershot, DxO, Capture 1, and several others.
Canon DPP, Sony IDC, etc are specific converters for their own brand of cameras only. As such they offers features that make use of manufacturer knowledge about the raw, the sensors, the lenses, the camera settings and so forth.
The third party solutions like Aperture compete pretty well in terms of the basic raw conversion, but only have limited access to some of the camera specifics, so can't fully compete when it comes to some of the cameras advanced processing options (for example diffraction compensation offered in some recent cameras)
Where third party solutions compete is in their ability to support raw from multiple brands of camera and by providing a much larger set of additional features.
Aperture provides excellent features to support the entire workflow process from initial capture to final publishing.
Its raw conversions are generally excellent in terms of the detail/noise balance. Colour and tone is usually a bit neutral or flat and needs adjusting to taste to make them pop, but the use of presets can make this fast and semi-automatic (contrast this with Lightroom which applies a profile that gives a much punchier default conversion). However, specific results will usually vary by camera; Canon, Sony and Olympus and Fuji conversions are usually well regarded, while Nikon users seem to be the most vocal about apertures flat conversions.
The use of in camera settings (tricks) designed to extend dynamic range can impact the raw processing. Where Aperture can read and understand the settings (like Fuji's DRx00% settings) it does a good job, but I see occasional issues reported from Nikon users about issues when using its ADL feature.
So whether you will need an additional raw tool will ultimately be down to what cameras and lenses you use and you own impressions of what you think of Apertures conversions for that equipment.
Unfortunately, there is no longer a demo version for you to try for yourself, although I've seen some comments here about purchasing and then asking for a refund if you are not happy, but I doubt that is official policy but perhaps contact App store support and ask.
When I bought the wrong Bourne movie in iTunes, at first I thought they'd given me the wrong one and complained. Then I realised it was my mistake so told them to forget the complaint. They emailed back saying they had refunded my purchase as it wasn't what I intended to buy. I've had several other dealings along related lines and I have to say I've never been on the wrong end of one their decisions, they have always played very fair with me.

• Can I change my image editor (library pictures)?? help please :)

Hi
when you look in the library you can select all images used including background graphics (screen shots) and there is a picture of a pencil that says edit.
Mine opens fireworks. Is this the default image editor or can I change this to photoshop & where do I do that ?
Thanks

Hi there
Just a heads up on this. You may discover that after you configure the editor, Captivate may appear to lose track of it. I say this because if you edit later, you may still find that Fireworks or whatever still opens.
What causes this is that Captivate allows you to work with different image formats. PNG, BMP, JPG, GIF, etc. Each of these types may have its own editor associated. So you might edit a GIF and see FireWorks open. But if you edit a JPG, you could see Photoshop open.

• CS4 Default Image Editor

Hello,
I am receiving a lot of emails with pictures attached. So I have set a program to view these files very fast (similar to Windows Fax/Image viewer). When I want to edit an Image within CS4 and click on "edit with external editor" the 'default' program above mentioned comes up instead of Photoshop. I know there"s a drop down menu and I can chose to open with Photoshop instead.
My simple question: can I tell CS4 that only Photoshop is the default image editor when I work within Indesign?
Thanks
Matt

Peter's right, but "image" covers a wide variety of different kinds of
files. I have .jpg set to open by default in the Windows Image viewer,
but .psd and .tif are set to open in Photoshop. I have .eps set to open
in a text editor, because I get eps files from all over the place, and
if I view it with a text editor I can usually figure out whether the eps
file came from Illustrator, or Photoshop, or some other source.
What I've never figured out about extensions is how to change the file
association for files that have no extension at all. I get a lot of Mac
files, many without extensions, and for some reason the default program
associated with extensionless files is Winamp.

That PKGBUILD doesn't work, primarily because _svnmod is not set correctly.  The remaining problems are mostly down to not being in the $srcdir directory when checking out the ImageMagick source.  It's also good practice to copy the source and do the build in the copy.  That way, it will be possible to successfully update the source and rebuild the package at a later date.  Otherwise, the PKGBUILD certainly works with the following modifications but I've no idea whether the package is viable because I didn't try installing and testing it.

• External Script Editors?

Does anybody have suggestions for external script-editors
that work with
Lingo? I've tried the usual searches, but the first several
pages of Google
all seem to link to the same program (lingo script editor
0.42) whose
website is now defunct - www.creative-inspiration.net (Don't
bother clicking
that link, there's nothing there.) I don't know if that
specific program
is what I'm looking for (can't even get a screenshot), but
it's the only one
that seems to appear on searches, and it doesn't even exist
anymore, so I
don't know where else to look. Ideally, something that works
from within
the Director authoring environment would be best, I'm not
sure how many fit
the bill for that, but I'm getting pretty sick of all the
annoying bugs and
lack of features in the default internal editor. (Is
highlighting of
corresponding parentheses too much to ask? Every other code
editor in the
world does it, but not Director's for some reason. Also
collapsable code
blocks would be nice, and a "what links here" feature like on
wikis to track
code a bit better would be really invaulable. Heck, even a
back-button to
go back to the last script you were working on? Nah, that's
just asking too
much.)

Is there a different version of HiEditor somewhere? Because
the one you
pointed me to doesn't seem to have any such features at all,
basically just
seems to be Notepad with tabs. The Options menu doesn't seem
to have
anything that would allow you to do script highlighting,
auto-indent, or
basically anything except font and size. There's also no Help
file at all,
nor any info on the site about how to use this.

I looked at UltraEdit - played around with the shareware
version a bit.
Looks like it's got most of the features I was looking for,
though certain
things I can't get to work properly. (e.g. Auto-indents for
case
statements, proper indenting of lines with if/then and
command on the same
line, a few others) Also $50 is a bit steep for a
text-editor, I think.
Maybe I can get my boss to pay for it, (though not if it
comes at the cost
of my paycheck, you know how it is...)

• Why is using Photoshop CS6 as the touchup image editor for Acrobat still a complete failure?

Image objects in pdfs are losing their positional and other parameters when saved after editing with Photoshop CS6(ONLY).  The problem was acknowledged on the Photoshop forum three months ago, but they said it was up to the Acrobat folks to fix it.  When using most previous versions of Photoshop (CS2-CS5 all tested) as the touchup image editor, Acrobat was able to place the image right back into it's previous position in the pdf and it could  do this without releasing whatever path was used to crop or mask the image (basically it worked great).  However, using Photoshop CS6 as the touchup image editor is still a complete failure.  Any idea when or if this will be fixed?
