External Instrument plug-in and SysEx

Hi
Am I right in thinking that the External Instrument plug-in filters out SysEx during MIDI playback?
cheers
zib

I don't know offhand without checking it, but it wouldn't surprise me too much if it did, as there seem to be some limitation in the MIDI data that audio instrument channels pass.
If it does, you'll need to make up a regular instrument set to your external instrument's port/channel and put that on a track below your external instrument track, and move the sysex to that...

  • Using EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT plug normally has latency BUT NOW FULLY SOLVED ???

    Hi,
I use alot of outboard synths and I use the EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT plug from Logic9 for this.As MIDI destination I choose my synth (Elektron Monomachine) and as AUDIO INPUT 11-12 , nothing spectacular there.
When I play this external instrument in Logic by hand using my usb controller keyboard everything plays in sync, but when I record it it has latency...Again this is normal (I think??) because I browsed alot of Logic groups and came to the conclusion that the EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT-plug isn't delay compensated,am I right? Even after rigid quantizing the recorded midi sounds a bit late, sluggish.
So the recorded midi has a delay, but THEN I FOUND OUT THIS : If instead in the EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT-plug I choose GM-device (don't know how this got in my midi destination list) instead of Elektron Monomachine as MIDI destination the midi is SPOT ON !!!! (playback)
Can somebody clarify this, this is very strange....the only downside to this is the fact that when I use the GM-device the midi is send to all my midi-synths at the same time....But what the heck,if I can record without almost no latency :-)
What am I missing,I feel like an idiot :-)

I've always used External MIDI tracks to control outboard instruments - it used to work perfectly for me, mostly using an Akai Z8 sampler and various synth modules. I'm becoming more inclined to doing everything in my computer though, these days.
The I/O plug-in has a Ping function - in other word, its sends a small packet of data to your external device and measures the amount of time it takes to come back, if you've got connections going both ways - I haven't used it, but I suppose that may help you with the latency problem, but using external MIDI tracks gives you all the basic stuff you want to do.

  • Playback with the external instrument plug-in

Hi. Sorry to bother you guys with this Q but I'm having some problems with the External Instrument Plug-in. I seem to have no problems recording in this way from an external synth but the information won't play back. Any info would be most appreciated.
    Cheers

ok now i'm a bit confused when I plug in my synth via the external instrument plug-in the sounds of my synth come up in logic as would one of its internal synths. i.e. the info is recorded as midi and can therefore be quantized and the velocity altered etc. So my goal here is to be able to use my own synth patches but be able to quantize them in logic ( which of course you can't do if its recorded as an audio file ). Now I'm not a tech person so perhaps this isn't possible and I'm just totally of the mark here but I figure it should be because when i use the E.I. Plug-in my synths sounds come out and the data does get recorded on an audio instrument file, and from there I can quantize it. The only thing is when I go to play back that region I get zip. The info is there, I can see it but there's no sound.

  • External Instrument Plug-in Bug

Anyone else able to reproduce this bug in the External Instrument Plug-in with Logic X?
    1. Create External MIDI track using External Instrument Plug-in
    2. Save project & quit Logic X.
    3. Reopen Project
    4. Now the External MIDI track is triggering a different MIDI Destination port to the one that was originally assigned (but is still labelled as the originally assigned MIDI Destination port in the External Instrument Plug-in
    5. Toggle MIDI Destination to nothing, then back to originally assigned MIDI port. It will once again function correctly
    6. This behaviour will repeat every time the project is reopened for all External MIDI tracks
Please note this behaviour does NOT occur on the LEGACY External Instrument Plug-in from Logic 9.
I'm using a MOTU micro lite MIDI interface.
Yes, I've submitted my report to Logic Pro Feedback

    Hi Peter,
the audio INs can be renamed under I/O Labels ... says theory. My Logic X (now Under Maverics) simply crashes when I try to open the I/O label menu.
As for External MIDI instruments, after the project restart the problem perceives. It always map the external instrument (configuration saved as a Logic X preset) to first MIDI OUT port available in the list. So I have to open all external instruments plugins and manually switch the preset to the device used for the track. Funny is that when the external instrument is opened the External instruments preset name and audio INs are correct, but the MIDI destination is always assigned to MIDI port 1. So I have to open External instruments library, select the correct preset (same as opened on screen) and it switches the correct MIDI Out ports.
I think that there might be a problem with the previous Logic 9 configuration files that Logic X incorporated. Maybe something should be deleted and clearly installed. If anybody knows which file contains the I/O and MIDI information and might be deleted helps.

  • Lost all Instrument Plug-ins and Samples

I recently Downloaded a free plugin from Native instruments website and after doing so I Lost all of my Instrument plug-ins and drum samples. I removed the native download but I still have not been able to recover my existing Logic instruments, I'm running Logic 9 any ideas?

Presets: Save them in CS3, copy the files to CS5.
Do NOT copy all the Adobe plugins from CS3, or you're in for a world of pain.
Just copy the third party plugins, or better yet, reinstall them for CS5.

    Hello, ppl.
I have success installed AD, OVD(11g), OID(10g), and BI Publisher with SSO (10g).
When i synchronize AD -> OID, and use External Auth Plug-in, synchronized users can success login to BI Publisher.
When i synchronize AD -> OID through OVD, and use External Auth Plug-in which look in the AD, synchronized users can success login to BI Publisher.
But when i synchronize AD -> OID through OVD, and switch External Auth Plug-in from AD to OVD, synchronize users can not login to BI Publisher.
How can i use External Auth Plug-in with OVD, did any one have solution?
In the future, OVD can contains multiple forests from AD's, now AD have one forest(dc).

  • External Instrument and PDC ?

    hi,
i just plugged and experimenting with External Instrument plug-in.
i'm routing Nord Lead 2 through Input 1-2... does logic automatically compensates the latency and put the Nord Lead signal in time with the rests?
or i need to use I/O plug-in additionally?
    thnx in advance

    hi, thnx for the answer.
i have seen that new version has improved I/O plugin that includes a "Ping" option... can i use it to measure / compensate the latency caused by external midi instrument?

  • Recording audio from "External instrument"

what's an easy way to get get audio from an "External instrument" track to it's own audio track for later editing? I have to use the External instrument because I need to monitor my synth with delay inducing pluggins on the master outputs.
    thanks.

i use the external instrument plug-in a lot with my lexicon mx200 (jord you can say hypocrite now) with guitars, vocals, and drums.
Why? An engineer friend once told me: if it sounds right, then it is right.
Like I said, you have to keep in mind that a mastering plug-in on the output bus will introduce delay. And, considering, as you stated, that a compressor would probably achieve the same effect, there's no reason not to use that instead (which may also take care of the delay problems). However, I wouldn't have even applied it on the output bus until it was time to mix and get my sound together (once I have tracked everything else).

  • How do I visually monitor instrumental plug-ins from the SAME computer??

    Hello -
My set-up is noted below. Please note that my audio device for my main computer (the Mac Pro) is the _Motu 2408 MK3_.
For larger sequencing projects, I use up to a choice of three slave computers (an aging Dell Precision Workstation, a Receptor and a MacBook Pro). I am happy to say that all works fine with this set up.
I own many instrumental plug-ins for the MacPro (and the slave computers). Most of the instrumental plug-ins in this computer (and the others) are "powered" by Native-Instrument's Kontakt 2 Player or the full version of Kontakt 2.
For the first time, I was experimenting with the MacPro's IAC Driver. So, for example, I was able to get the piano to play using Kontakt 2 OUTSIDE of the Logic program using the IAC Driver. It is very nice to know that I am able to do this. However, I was not able to visually monitor the audio signal from within Logic as I was playing the piano sound from the "external" Kontakt 2 program. So, to clarify my problem, I could hear the piano, but I could not see the audio signal on the audio meter from within Logic.
First, I tried using the Logic's "*External Instrument*" plug-in. That did not work. Second, communicating with the "external" Kontakt 2 program using Logic's midi instrument via the IAC driver, I tried monitoring the audio signal using an Audio Channel from Logic. I Could not figure out how to route the audio signal so that it could be seen by Logic, so that did not work.
I tried seeing if I could somehow configure the 2408 MK3 driver and CueMix Console. Nothing.
So, here is my question (possibly two questions):
    1) Is it possible to configure the MOTU 2408 MK3 device so that I can monitor audio signals from within Logic that originate from instrumental plug-ins activated OUTSIDE of Logic?
    If yes, then. . .
    2) HOW do I configure the MOTU 2408 MK3 device and/or configure Logic so that the audio signals can be monitored? (And so that I can add EQ and audio effects, etc.??)
Thank you in advance. . .
    Ted

First, noequplease, THANK YOU very much for taking the time to answer my question. I sincerely appreciate the time and effort that you shared!!!
I need to clarify myself, I guess. These are not "external" synths in the literal sense. Everything is "internal" within the same computer (the MacPro) as the Logic Pro program. These are instrumental plug-ins like the *Kontakt 2 Player* or the *Kontakt 2* (full version). What I've learned how to do is connect to these instrumental software plug-ins external from the Logic Pro program via the IAC Driver. So, it's all "internal" within the computer, just "external" from Logic. (If that makes sense.)
The reason I'm attempting to connect Logic this way is so that I can use more of the 8 GBs of RAM found within my MacPro. So, in other words, I would use the Kontakt 2 Player as an instrumental plug-in within the Logic Pro program and ALSO connect Logic Pro to the "external" *Kontakt 2 Player* (the _stand alone_ plug-in version) via the IAC Driver.
I can communicate with the stand alone version(s) of Kontakt via the IAC driver. Sound is coming out. However, I have yet to figure out a way route the audio signals from the stand alone plug-in to inside Logic.
I suspect that your suggestion of using an external mixer might be the answer (despite using computer-based instrumental plug-ins). I don't think that there's a way of routing the audio signal from a stand alone plug-in to Logic without the use of some kind of mixer. I most probably will need a digital mixer to take advantage of the 2408 MK3's ADAT digital signals to route the signals back into the MacPro. Sadly, I can't afford a digital mixer at this time.
    I don't know. . . .
BUT, like I said in my original post, my CURRENT set-up using the "slave" computers works just fine. I'm just trying to figure out a way to make use of all of my MacPro's 8 GBs of RAM. UGH.
    Any ideas??

  • New external instrument bug? (please test)

Just updated to Logic 9.0.1 and i think i've found a new bug with the external instrument plug-in. When i adjust the "input volume" parameter the slider shoots down to "-24 db" and however much i try to adjust this, it snaps back to this "-24 db" setting. I cant adjust it at all!!!
    Can someone else please confirm?

I've heard people complaining about some of the lack of testing that goes on, but in this case it's kind of funny; no one thought to just move the sliders to check?
I mean. Wow. Really. Just. Wow.
It's kind of hilarious, at least with the I/O plugin - since latency compensation has been the feature which is the catalyst for many an angry PT vs LP debate. To not get that simple plugin right on the first get go only reaffirms what a lot of people already think about LP (Bare in mind I'm an LP only user - but one, hopefully, with an open mind and a sense of humour.)
    Edit:
I should add that the "pings" I did do with the I/O plugin saw a sample offset of +1. Which is beyond negligible really. That means Logic's roundtrip calculations were already pretty accurate.

  • External Instrument latency

    Hi guys!
I can't find this topic mentioned elsewhere, so here goes...
I have a Korg MS2000R sound module that I control with the External Instrument plug-in (ie. via the Audio Instruments section). But when I use this setting, there is a tiny but distinct latency in the sound, ie. the MS2000R sound is a tiny bit behind the rest of the music. When I monitor the module through my audio interface without External Instrument, there is no latency.
Any thoughts on how to approach this one?
    Thanks,
    STEVE...

Actually, go to System Preferences>MIDI>Sync (ithink that's the thread I'm not in front of it- it might be Sync first, then MIDI). There should be slider (sync) which will allow you to set a negative or positive value depending on your latency (although I've never heard of anyone hearing the sound before the key has been pressed! LOL). This is much easier and possibly more accurate...
    Didn't think of that before...

  • External instrument Question

I have a Alesis DM8  hooked up via USB but when I create a track and use the external instrument plug in I choose my DM8 but I don’t get any signal or sound

Create an External MIDI Track.  (do not use an instrument track and an external instrument plugin)
In the inspector set the output of the External MIDI track to the DM8 or USB MIDI, whatever it's called. Set the MIDI Channel to 10.
Record yourself playing the MIDI information.
Plug a set of headphones into the DM8 lower the volume if it has one, play back the track, do you hear anything from the headphones?
You must understand  MIDI is Not Audio, it's simply a trigger that -plays- and instrument.

  • External instrument not hearing playback

I have my Alesis DM8 hooked up via USB to Logic and I launched a external instrument plug in I've selected the proper Midi channel and ave output coming out of Logic the midi information records but I can't hear playback I have the DM8 mapped to the EXS24 but I would like to use the sounds in the DM8 module I've seen other threads on this issue but it I can't seem to find a solution just trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong ...

It is now in the Utilities Folder
    Hope that helps

We are working on a Proof of Concept instance to integrate MS AD with OID for the first time for E-Biz 11i.

How to debug ldapcompare ? Where is the logfile for ldapcompare ?
    ldapcompare -h OID_Host -p 389 -D "cn=orcladmin" -w ******* -b "cn=lastname\, firstname,ou=consultants,ou=users,ou=usaeast,dc=adadmin,dc=lps,dc=netsrv,dc=us" -a userPassword -v abcdefgh
The value abcedefgh is not contained in the attribute userPassword in DN cn=lastname\, firstname,ou=consultants,ou=users,ou=usaeast,dc=adadmin,dc=lps,dc=netsrv,dc=us.
An ldapbind on the same AD server is successful, but ldapcompare is failing.

I get invalid credentials. Though the network password is correct. I feel its somewhere i messed up the 3rd party plug-in configuration. Is there a method to get debug information for ldapcompare command ?
    From metalink NOTE : 277382.1
"When using the above command, ldapcompare binds to OID using the OID admin user (typically "cn=orclAdmin") and password. Then it provides the AD username and requests that the value supplied as AD-USER-PASSWORD be compared to whatever is stored in AD username's userPassword attribute. Because OID does not store a value in its own user entries/userPassword attributes for AD-synchronized entries, this ldapcompare call will cause OID to invoke the plug-in and verify the userPassword value in AD instead.
If the plug-in works, the ldapcompare should return a message saying that the given password is contained in the userpassword attribute, e.g.
    "

  • Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!
