External iPhoto Libraries and Incremental Back-ups?

Any recommendations on best way to go external with iPhoto libraries?
I'm thinking 500Gig OWC FW800's over any External SATA drives...
How about using Carbon Copy Cloner for incremental Backup of iP libraries?
Thanks as I've been snooping around with not much advice found,
Rosco

I assume that what you really need is some form of keeping the photograph folders on your internal hard drive in sync with the folders on your external hard drive (the catalog itself can be backed up from within Lightroom). This downloadable little utility works for me when I want to keep my spreadsheets, letters, iTunes files ...etc... backed up;
http://www.goodsync.com/download/update
It's nothing to do with Lightroom. You first set up simple jobs within the utility, telling it which folders on your internal drive should be backed up to which folders on your external drive. It will then run, and copy to the ehd any items in the source folder that have changed since the last sync. Then, if your internal hard drive fails, you can copy these folders and catalogs from your ehd to the replacement hd, using the original folder structure.
In Lightroom, the catalog is the main organisational tool, rather than the folder. I let LR decide on it's own folder structure, because I never refer to my RAW files outside of LR. Hope this helps.

  • Backing up photos to external hard drive, and exporting back to CF card on camera

iPhoto 5 on Mac Power PC G4, OS 10.4.11
backing up photos to external hard drive (LaCie) My iPhoto Library contains a number of files (such as 'Library.iPhoto' 'iPhoto.db' 'ThumbJPG.data' etc) and a number of folders with dates such as 2005 etc, containing folders within folders, none of which with any contents.
Is there a way I can organise just the photos on their own so that I can select just those to be backed up on my LaCie hard drive, without all those distracting and (apparently) unnecessary extra files and folders ?
exporting edited photos back to CF card on camera I have tried everything I can think of to export photos from iPhoto back to the CF card on the camera, without success. It must be possible to do ?

Edit: Note: It's been a while but the Export command may be in the Share menu on older versions...
    1. To back up an iPhoto Library
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    2. To Back up Just the Photos
Use the File -> Export command to export the images to where you want them.
BTW: there are no user-serviceable parts in the iPhoto Library Folder. Rooting around in there can cause damage.
    3. Edited Photos to CF Card is a two part process:
Exporting is just File -> Export. Choosing any setting except 'Original' and you'll get the Edited version.
The CF Card? Just drag and drop there.
But a couple of possible problems: Canon Cameras don't show up in the Finder. So you'll need to stick the card into a USB Card Reader for get them on there
Camera Cards are all formatted FAT. That means there's a limit to the number of items on the top level of the card: Workaround: Export the shots to a folder and drag that over
And, of course, if you want to see the shots in the camera, you'll need to put them in whatever specific folder it uses for the photos.

If not the only answer is the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager -http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and maybe duplicate annihaliator -http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/18748/duplicate-annihilator

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries and iPhone syncing

    Hi-
Thanks for reading. I recently used iPhoto Library Manager from Fatcat (highly recommended) to take a 23,000 photo library and chop it down into several iphoto libraries. It seems that my phone by default wants to sync photos with the original library, and not one of the new ones. I am wondering a few things:
    1. when i hold down the "option" key when opening iphoto i have the choice of opening any of my libraries. Perhaps the iphone will sync to which ever iphoto library i used last???
    2. perhaps iphoto will always recognize my original library as "default" and i need to look into making one of my new libraries the master default?
Is this possible? Can I create a new iphoto library and use this as default across all apple programs going forward?
Any clarity on connection between new iphoto libraries and how the computer, and most importantly, my iphone, will recognize them is appreciated. thanks in advance,
    Joe

When you launch iPhoto it opens the last used library - so when you force a launch by connecting a camera or iPhone you will be syncing to the last used library

I have an iMac 2013 running OSX 10.9.4. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup user files to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMack Hard drive.
So, say I make the backup today, delete iphoto libraries from my iMac, and then backup my iMac in a week. What happens to the iphoto libraries that are on the external backup drive now that I am backing up the iMac where they no longer exist?
I will have them backed up to a separate second external drive as well.
I'm just very cautious about removing them from the hard drive.
Thanks for helping and understanding my crazy caution!

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • Backup iphoto libraries and applicaation

To free up space on my ibook, I would like to move all of iphoto and its libraries to an external disk that has been partitioned to house a "clone" of my hard disc and iphoto. Question: will i be able to access an iphoto library and either add files or work on file in CS2. The iphoto app is on the external and CS2 on the internal. I will back up my iphoto files via CD's.
    Advice and comments welcome
    David

    Hi David,
as far as I know iPhoto.app has to be on the boot drive and in the root of the Applications folder (for software update to see it and notify you of updates).
The libraries, on the other hand, can be anywhere on your HD or on an external.
You can set up CS2 to be your external editor within iPhoto Preferences. Once you do this you can double click on an image in iPhoto and it will open in CS2 to be edited.
The image must be flattened and saved with the same name for the edit to be reflected in the iPhoto Library.
Once the library has been copied to the external, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer and then choose it.

  • Time capsule vs. External hard drive for periodic back-ups

Hope this is the right forum. At home I have the old "Back-Up" program that I use for quarterly back ups of certain files as scheduled. Love it. Was gonna set that up on our new(er) Macs here at work only to discover that program was replaced by Time Machine. Time Machine won't let me even in to see how it works without a Time Capsule or other External Hard Drive to connect to...
What I'm trying to do: Schedule monthly (or quarterly) back-ups for settings, certain important files and possibly certain programs from 4 office computers (3 iMacs and 1 Powerbook). Would love to back up to Mobile Me but can't seem to figure out how (Time Machine certainly won't let me). But then want to store the backups either online (like Mobile Me) or in a fire safe...
What I'm looking at: Possible options I've thought of include DVDs (which is really impractical), a 32 GB flash drive (but only would know how to get certain files on there), an external hard drive or a time capsule. But if I get either of those we'd only want to use it once a month and then keep it in the fire safe. Now I know Time Capsule is designed to do regular (daily, weekly, etc) backups... but can I use it to select what is backed up only at certain times and how hard/easy is it to plug in and out if I'm doing it that way. Or would it simply be better for what I'm looking for to get some other external hard drive?
I'm not very good at backing up info - but have to be responsible to at work (plus my brother just had a fire and he lost all his computers and info)... so simply not sure what is best suited for my needs?

In that case I'd use an external disk drive. Time Machine isn't really intended for what you want to do.

  • Best tool for cloning drive and regular back-ups

A 500gb 7200.4 seagate drive just arrived, and I'm intending on cloning the 500gb 5400rpm stock drive in my 15" 2.8ghz unibody MBP to the 7200.4 (attached in a 2.5 SATA USB enclosure), and then using the 7200.4 as the main drive, once I've found time time to install it internally. Once I've done that, the 5400rpm stock drive will be used for regular back-ups via completely cloning the upgraded internal disk.
I have CCC installed, but I've rarely used it, and I've noticed that the OS X disk services appears to have a 'create image' option. And then there's Time Machine, which I know very little about. The most important thing is that I need a bootable disk which, in theory, could simply be installed in a new machine and I'll be right where I left off. Which is the best back-up tool for this?

CCC is a very good tool for what you gave in mind. SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html is another one in the same league.
Time Machine is a good backup tool, since it backups once the complete content of your OSX harddisk and further on only the changed files.
It can also be used the restore the OSX but for this you have to boot from the OSX DVD.
To me using CCC or SuperDuper would be exactly what you are looking for:
Making a bootable clone onto your external HD, from which you can either boot-up your Mac or simply reinstall the external HD in your Mac.

  • Large incremental back-ups on time machine

Since the last system update (10.10.3 (14D136)) last week, my time machine has started making large hourly back-ups. They seem to be between 100mb and 500mb per hour which is far more than any files I have changed or downloaded. Normally the time machine finishes in about 5 minutes, but its pretty much going continually now. I generally work with documents and office stuff in pages, keynote etc, not with huge images or video so there is no way I can be so productive!
At first I thought it might just be the system update from last week, having changed a lot of files, but I would expect that to be over after a day or two. This seems now to be a pattern, and its causing problems by eating my wi-fi bandwidth.
Anybody have any ideas as to why the incremental hourly back-up is so large every time? How can I find out which files are changing?
    Regards from sunny Scandinavia
    SimonC
I use a macbook air, from Spring 2014

Can you explain your observations that lead you to believe the weeklies do not work? Monthly? I don't think there is a monthly "stash." It's hourly for 24 hours, daily for one month, and weekly until disk is full.
I'm looking back at my archive and it seems to have logical date-time stamped folders. The weeklies do not continuously adjust day-by-day based on the end date of the one-month daily backups. If the oldest weekly backup is 1 March, the next oldest is 8 March, and then 15 March. Those dates will not change.
I don't know technically how Time Machine merges the backups.

  • I have 2 iphoto libraries and duplicates of everything

I set up my macbook pro wrong 2 years ago and am suffering for my stupidity.   I have 2 iphoto libraries, both with different photos in them.  Last week I imported photos from one library into the other and now I have 56,000 photos, most of which are duplicates.  I have deleted about 20,000 - folders were duplicated several times.  New folders contain 'face' photos (just heads, from the face identity bit of iphoto but now as an individual photo).  What I want to do now is to restore my iphoto to how it was 10 days ago because i can't cope with the number of duplicates i have.
I have selected folders and chosen duplicate from the drop down menu but this just gives me MORE duplicates, it doesn't get rid of them.  I have bought photo sweeper app which is meant to show duplicates but this has made no difference to the library.
Can anyone help me either restore my library, get rid of duplicates or anything else?
I am not great with the compuer, so I need simple mac speak please
    Thanks

To merge libraries use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  or Aperature
To find duplicates within an iPhoto library use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Photos that are not in an iPhoto library can be imported telling iPhoto not to import duplicates (an imperfect procews) and then IPLM can find the duplicates
As to keeping seperate libraries - only you can do that - IPLM can move photos between libraries for you but only you can know which photos should be in which library

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries and iDVD

I am using iPhoto (v.6.0.5) that allows for multiple libaries but iDVD (v.6) only accesses the orignial library. Is there an easy way to have iDVD locate my other iPhoto libraries without having to rename the libaries each time?
    Thanks for your help!

    Jerry:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. John's suggestion about drag and drop to the slide bin is how I do my iDVD slideshow. You can use iPhoto Library Manager to manage your libraries but iDVD will have to be restarted whenever you change libraries. But, iPLM (the paid version for 20 or more photos) will let you copy albums or rolls between libraries and that would let you create a new library just for the iDVD project and move the necessary photos quickly and easily to the special library.
    Do you Twango?

If you're pushing Option at the exact moment you're clicking the Dock icon, it's supposed to do that. Wait until just after clicking it.

  • Splitting iPhoto libraries and it's impact on Flickr & Facebook?

Hi! I currently have one library on my MacBook for iPhoto, running iPhoto 11. I have been using the built in exporter for Facebook and Flickr, but because of space I want to split the library into 2 and move some of these files to an external hard drive. If I move these files to the external hard drive, and then delete them from my MacBook hard drive, what impact will that have to items aleady posted on Facebook and Flickr if any?

    True.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • AUTO TAPE EJECT and NIGHT BACK-UPS PROBLEM

    Hello
I have installed OEL Linux and I have to configure a tape which will be used to back files automatically during the night.
I have one problem which is I do not know where to start..
My list of requirements is as below:
Daily back-ups automatically and then eject the tape in the morning after all back-ups have been completed..
A summary of back-up has to be e-mailed to specific users about which files have been backed-up and if there are any failures have to be reported. The back-ups are only for FILES and FILES have to be copied from HD to TAPE.
How can I do this? Where can I start?
Thanks for the quick response and assistance in advance..I need a direction or a place to read so I can start.
Any Advice is warmly welcomed and will be thankful.

Well, check the tape vendor's web site to see what Linux applications they may offer. How do they expect this tape drive to be visible and usable with Linux? Perhaps they offer a backup application but if they don't check out the AMANDA tool from {font:Courier}http://www.amanda.org{font} which may already do what you need.

  • How to merge parts of two iPhoto libraries and remain separate users

We have two user accounts - let's call them A and B - on our iMac and hence two separate libraries which is fine for the major part of our photos, but we have many photos of mutual adventures and hopefully more to come in the future. If this is relevant: the photos are imports from other computers, but are no longer available from these computers. There's a continuous backup on Time Capsule via Time Machine.
We would like to share the photos from the two existing accounts, except those that are from each users past.
I expect to have to move or copy some photos including new imports in the future to a new shared library AND keep our old libraries from the past separate as they are from the past.
I further more would like to share the photos from mutual adventures to to Apple TV - maybe via Airplay as I can already do with the iTunes library on account A.
It seems to me the best way would be to have a separate user account -  account C - for mutual iPhoto and our music in iTunes, BUT user A synchronize the music to my iPhone and user B does not yet. To complicate things - I think - user B has less storage on the iPhone than user A, so the full iTunes library simply does not fit on user B. I do realise it's possible to do selective synchronisation of music, but will this work in such a setup?
    How do I do this?

Thank you for a quick reply. Unfortunately this is turning out to be more complicated than I initially had hoped. Please see why in explanation below.
I would like to give more information about the setup, just to be absolutely sure there's no smart setup for us. As user A was the first user in our network this user has an iTunes id which is used for the Appstore/iTunes syncing iPhone/Airplay to share music and photos from user A's library. User A (unfortunately?) also has an iCloud id which is different from the iTunes id in order to use the iCloud sync features for Mail/iCal etc. User B has an iTunes id and a small music library, but is currently not using it. User B also has an iCloud id to use the sync features.
From your answers it seems there's no way to "get it all" (sharing, syncing, personal/mutual data) in our current setup and the whole iCloud/Air Play/sharing is a little confusing to me, but given that the primary purpose is to show the mutual photos as a screensaver on our iMac and Apple TV and play the music there too there are two ways to do this:
    1. your suggested setup with the extra library (to be shared via Airplay to Apple TV with an iTunes id assigned to the new Media user iTunes/iPhoto library). In this setup user B looses the ability to see photos on the iPad unless duplicates exist.
    2. copying all mutual photos for user A respectively B to two separate albums in the existing separate libraries and making these albums available as screensavers and sharing via Airplay, BUT with the limitation that only one user's album will be available at a time as screensaver and as far as the Apple TV goes the users two separate iTunes id's have to be used to access the album from one user at a time.
    Question:
Ref. 1 As I understand it iTunes purchases are linked to one id. So what are the consequences for a user if the iTunes id is in use for the Apple TV homesharing via Airplay and a logon is attempted on the user's iPhone?
Ref. 1 As I understand the sharing setup the iTunes id for user A with the most music must be the preferred one for the new Media user and the music library for user A must also be copied to the new Media user?
Ref. 2 As I said the whole iCloud/sharing/synchronizing issues are a little confusing. Given the above information with two separate iPhones, iTunes accounts, iCloud accounts and the wish to share photos/music
Do you see any smarter way to do this than your initial suggestion?
