External isight wont work with imac g4

Hello,
I recently purchased a second hand isight camera using ebay.
I have an older imac g4 and the isight wont work with it at all.
I have scoured the forums on this topic and looked through all of EZ Jim's suggestions but I think my problem is a little bit different.
I'll explain exactly what happens and my troubleshooting so far...
The imac G4 is powered off, I plug in the external isight via firewire 400
The imac boots up into leopard 10.5.8 (using leopard assist)
In system profiler the isight is listed under the firewire tab.
( I can post system profiler info on this if its needed)
When I turn on the camera ichat launches, but then in the video tab it says no camera is connected.
Photobooth just has the no camera sign, but interestingly when ichat is opened photobooth says "camera off"
sometimes photobooth even lets me click the photo button, it counts down but then it doesnt take a picture... obviously!
Skype doesnt work.
I have an imac 24" running snow leopard 10.6.6 .... that also detects the camera but it won't work with any application such as skype or ichat.
I have tried (on my G4) unplugging my usb bluetooth module but nothing changes.
My G4 is connected via ethernet to an external router.
The firewire cable seems ok, I dont have any other firewire devices, but if it was a problem with the BUS or the cable then im guessing it wouldnt show in system profiler.
I am thinking the camera is probably damaged, but before I start a paypal enquiry I would like to see if it is just my computer or a setting i need to change.
(oh I used the application isight updater in core services but the install button is greyed out)
Any help would be amazing!!
Thanks!!!

Well, about all you can do would be to try a different and known good
FireWire cable, as a replacement for what may be a defective FW400
cable that came with the iSight camera. The cable can be defective
with one bad wire, yet sometimes appear available to the computer.

• iMac G5 (iSight), & Intel-based iMac: Using External video camera:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2819
If you know of someone with an older Mac without a built-in iSight
camera, to test that one on, this may be an OK idea. Not sure if you
could get any traction by taking the camera to an Apple Specialist
and ask if they could check it out for you; that may also cost you.
{And since your computer does not officially support Leopard 10.5,
the other avenues of support would probably not be open to you.
At least not with the old iMac G4 and an unsupported 10.5 install.}
I have an external iSight camera which was included with my G4 Mini
1.5GHz model, and that appeared to work OK with 10.5.8 at one point.
But I really have no need for it, since I don't use photobooth & so on.
And haven't tried that with my iMac G4 computers at all. No need to.
With a computer not equipped with an iSight camera, the Leopard 10.5
installation should still support the eventual addition of one; even if the
computer itself appears to not officially support a Leopard 10.5 install.
(You refer to Leopard Assist, a means to install in slower CPU Macs.)
The FW cable is about the most easy to consider at this point.
In the course of a year, I've found good replacement cables at
several places, even those at thrift stores in perfect shape, work
and I use them for FW external hard disk drives, primarily. To have
spares is nearly always a good idea. Test & keep known good ones.
I'm not certain how the external iSight FW camera may work on
a newer Intel-based 24" iMac with a built-in iSight camera, too.
Does your 24" computer have FireWire 400+800 ports? Can you
choose an external iSight camera and ignore the built-in one?
These secondary topics have probably been discussed in the other
forum area for Intel-based iMac computer models; if you chose to
try & use that camera with a model computer with one built-in...
• Apple - Support - Discussions: for Intel-based iMac
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
There is a possibility, if never tried and the iMac G4 computer was
acquired second-hand, that the FW port within it may be band; but
the cable is the first item since it is cheapest, in troubleshooting.
So, anyway, the hour is late here (1AM) so hopefully the matter
can be resolved with a known-good replacement FW400 cable.
You should not have to restart the iMac G4 (800?) model in order
to get a FireWire item to be recognized. It should appear in the
System Profiler's list under FireWire, such as things normally do.
Of course, the camera could be defective as well. Been some
time since they were available on sale, new from Apple...
You could ask around to find out if there is a way to use that
external iSight camera with your newer Intel-based 24" Mac
by someone having it ignore its own built-in camera; in a
way as to not affect its normal operation, that is.
Good luck & happy computing!

I have a g4 power book and since i updated to Leopard my isight camera wont work with ichat or any other application, it wont recognize the camera. Does this mean its incompatible? How can i fix the issue?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, gavz
It is compatible.
Try the suggestions in How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional.

• External iSight not working on iMac, works on Macbook despite same software

Hello!
I have an External iSight that when I plug into my Macbook (running latest Mac OS) works just fine with iChat AND Adobe Flash Webchats...
However, when I plug it into my new iMac, the green light will turn on, but the it doesn't show on ANY applications that there is an External iSight available.
The only difference is that I am connecting the iSight with an 4 to 8 pin adapter: When I plug it in, it acts the same as it does with the MacBook--the green light turns on, it makes a sound, and is ready for usage. However, I can't get it to work with any programs on my iMac.
My PRIMARY concern, is I need it to work with Adobe Flash Webchats. Help!

Hello, macboyme
Consider the following in any order you find relevant for your system:
(0) You write that you are using a 4pin to 8pin adapter. However, I think you mean 6pin to 9pin adapter.
External iSight is a Firewire device that uses a 6pin Firewire 400 connector.
Newer Macs have only 9pin Firewire 800 connectors, so it is common to use 6pin to 9pin adapters similar to the one I normally use:
      http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/FIR1369AD/
The only 8 pin cables and adapters I could find were USB. They won't work on Firewire devices.
4pin Firewire is a mini connection that I have only seen in cameras. If you really are using a 4 and/or 8 pin cable, I suggest you try a different Firewire adapter method.
My suggestions below are based on using a 6pin to 9pin adapter like that mentioned above or cable like this one I have also successfully used:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A
(1) Test in another User Account on your iMac. Be sure to also consider all the other suggestions for external iSight from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
You do not say which of your Macs has only FW800 ports that require a Firewire adapter. To remove as many variables as possible, test the same cables and Firewire 400-800 adapter on both Macs if it is possible to do so. If you only use the adapter on one Mac, it is possible that the adapter is the cause of your trouble. If one of your Macs has only FW400 and the other has only FW800, test with a different adapter or use a 6pin-9pin cable to test both your Firewire iSight. Also, test another Firewire 400 device to eliminate the possibility that your problem is caused by one of your connections.
(2) For additional ideas on how to test external iSight, consider the additional suggestions here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
Unless the software and connected peripherals are EXACTLY the same on both your iMac and your MacBook, be sure to consider possible hardware or software conflicts with something else installed in or connected to your iMac. A link to more info about conflicts is included in the "How to test..." page.
(3) If you can rule out both possible conflicts and connection problems in the iMac, the problem must be either in your iMac's user account or in the system software used to operate your external iSight.
You can rule out problems with the user account by testing in several different accounts.
If the problem is EXACTLY the same in any user account you test on your iMac, your system software is suspect. Backup all your important files, repair permissions, and apply the 10.6.4 Combo Update:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
Follow the restart that completes the Combo Update with another permissions repair. Then test iSight again.
(4) Once your external iSight works correctly with your iMac's QuickTimeX, iChat, etc., it will work as well with Flash video websites as it does when you are running it from your MacBook.

• IPod wont work with iMac but works in Vista

I have an 80GB iPod Classic that works perfect on my computer running Windows Vista and iTunes 7. I have only ever used it with iTunes.
My iPod's format is FAT32 (Windows). And it's running software Version 1.1.2 and disk use is enabled.
When i try and plug it into an iMac (iMac G5) running OS X 10.3.9 it doesn't work. It doesn't come up as an external drive so I can't access it as an external disk and it fails to work in iTunes.
I have upgraded the Mac to the latest version of iTunes but this still doesn't solve the problem. I tunes gives me the following error "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted...". This is not the case, my iPod is not corrupted.
How can i get my iPod to work on the Mac?

If you buy an iPod, you are Apple's customer whether you use Windows or Mac OS X. Therefore, your statement
nice how they screw their own customers.
makes zero sense.
If Apple products work in Windows for an extended period of time, this is because the most common and popular (by far) version of Windows is getting on 8 years old. And since XP is so prevalent, Apple has to support it, just like any other company that makes products that work with Windows. It is highly unlikely that Windows Vista will ever surpass XP in usage; Apple will no doubt continue to support XP with iTunes and iPods when XP is TEN years old.
For Mac OS X, Apple has been pushing the rate of development much faster. Therefore, Panther is already "old" technology, even if it was released after Windows XP. Panther is PowerPC-only and most active Macs (in the installed base) are now Intel-based, with 3 million new Intel Macs being added to the installed base every quarter. ALL Intel Macs use Tiger or Leopard. Most Power PC Mac users with supported hardware have at least upgraded to Tiger, if not Leopard. Therefore, only a small fraction of Mac users still use Panther day to day. SO... Tiger is obviously a good cutoff point for backward support, just as Windows XP is a good cutoff point on the Windows side. It's just common sense, not Apple trying to "screw customers."
It's not just Apple using this common sense. Many, if not most, third party software and hardware Mac products being released right now require Tiger or Leopard, just like with Apple.
As for your actual problem, I would try Restoring the iPod on the Windows side (assuming you have a copy of all the files on the PC). A Mac should be able to read FAT32 format, both in iTunes (using manual management) and as a hard drive using Finder. If you can get this to work, you can copy the iTunes media files onto the iPod as files (not through iTunes) and then transfer them to the Mac as files. Then load them into the Mac's iTunes library.
Continue using your Windows PC to sync the iPod. On the Mac side, use +manual management+ (do not sync).

• External isight not working with Macbook Pro early 2008

My external isight is not working with my Macbook Pro early 2008 (2.4 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 6 GB RAM, OSX Lion). It goes warm when plugged into the firewire port but is not recognized in system prefs (lists as "unknown device" and also does not turn on (green light. I tried resetting PRAM and all the other stuff as suggested here but no luck. It used to work fine on a 1st generation Macbook and I remember that one of the first times I tried it with this machine here it turned on for a few secs (green light) but then it just simply stopped.
Unfortunately, I have no other firewire device to check the port.
Any ideas, dear community?

Our (old) external Firewire iSights can be sensitive to dust, shock, vibration, humidity, and other environmental factors in storage. (I store my spare in its original plastic shipping case with a new desiccant pack on a solid shelf - never in a desk drawer or other container that moves.)
You have tried several good things and may be finding that your old iSight needs work.
Here are the alternatives I can offer. Consider any you have not tried in any order you like:
(1) You can try Apple's suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
Test in more than one user account and with more than one Apple softwre application.
(2) My expanded suggestions here: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
(3) Reset Firewire ports using the info from this old archived Apple article: http://web.archive.org/web/20090331211534/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
(4) If you have no local Apple Authorized service Provider who can help you, other service options are here: http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
(5) Consider a new USB cam with current warranty such as one of these: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

• External speakers not working with iMac and Lion

I have a dual core imac with Lion and external speakers I just bought from Apple. I cannot get them to work with itunes or anything else on the imac. Can anyone tell me what to do? They work well with an ipod touch, but not the iMac.

Hmmm. I plugged the speakers into the headphone jack. they are the Audyssey Lower East Side Media Speakers. When I hoty option on the menu bar, headphones are checked as output. When I go to system preferences and check output, all it says is "headphone port." Still no change.

• Built in Isight wont work with IChat

I have the New Macbook and i have used Ichat Video before but now it wont work, i get this message:this computer dose not support video conferencing
anyone help?

Adequate.
The Upload is acceptable.
iChat will fail at 50kbps (In Video chats with a message)
The Lowest Spec Apple Suggests for 1-1 Video is 100kbps
The lowest Apple Spec for 3 and 4 way Video chats is 384k but I have done passable ones at 256k.
If System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming is left at Automatic in Leopard iChat reads this as 384k (it should be set to 1.5Mbps and iChat restarted if Changed)
Have you tested at different times ?
IS that the Best speed with the service you have ?
Is that speed near what they say they are selling you ?
The Speeds you quote should not get you the Too Slow Info message.
Is that Internet Connection shared with other computers ?
Were you doing a download ?
Both will effect the amount of the Speed (called Bandwidth) that you get.
Think of a Freeway as you enter a city in rush hour. It might be a road you can do the national speed Limit but you may not be able to go that fast due to other traffic.

• Isight not working with skype and tokbox after snow leopard upgrade

Recently, I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. After the upgrade, I found that my built-in iSight camera wasn't recognized on TokBox. On Skype, it said that the iSight camera was in use by another application (however no other applications were running). The iSight is working with iChat, so I don't know what is wrong... everything was fine when I was using Tiger!

hellokitty650 wrote:
Okay, so I restarted my computer and that didn't work.
Then, I went through the suggestions from the link you posted. I found that the iSight works in iChat and Photobooth; however, it does not work in iMovie HD (exactly the same in both user accounts on my computer). Just like before, the iSight is "in use by another application" in Skype on both user accounts.
I reset the SMC, but it didn't seem to help anything. Everything was acting the same as before I reset it.
I also noticed that my iTunes and my iMovie won't open; they both quit unexpectedly every time I try to open them. This happens in both user accounts as well.
Okay, so it will be simplest to work your issues in steps. We will start with iMovie.
Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions. Then reinstall iMovie HD 6. Repair permissions again after the installer finishes.
If the version of iMovie HD 6 in your iLife '06 DVD is not "6.0.3", download and install the update:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL319
If you need to do this update, repair permissions again after the update is finished.
Test the reinstalled iMovie HD 6 to see if it works in more than one user account and post back the results.

• Will old iSight camera work with new Mac mini?

will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini? If so what adapters will I need?

Matthewlopez wrote: will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini?...
Yes (if the old external iSight works.)
Apple's long ago discontinued Firewire External iSights were great webcams, but they are old (as consumer electronics go) and some may have had pretty rough treatment. Even NOS (new old stock) items may have been damaged in storage or handling.
If you have access to an external iSight, you can test it using the suggestions from this page: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html. To reduce the possibility of conflicts for old Firewire iSights, I suggest you disconnect all other Firewire peripherals until you get your external iSight working with your mini. Then connect other needed items one at a time and test each to determine whether you can use any without conflict.
If you are considering buying an external iSight now, a new webcam (with warranty) may be a better choice. Many available alternatives are listed here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
If you want more examples of external iSight and newer minis, take a look at some of the results of this search for your question.
Matthewlopez wrote: ... If so what adapters will I need?
You will need a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter. This adapter offers only a Firewire 800 connection.
The Firewire connection on old external iSights is a Firewire 400 connector. Therefore, you need some way to connect to the FW800 connector on your adapter:
• To use the FW400 6pin-6pin cable that comes with iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter
      like one of these:
      http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m  (I use this one.)
      http://tinyurl.com/cgll7o
      http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/ (I use this one.)
• Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:

• ISight not working with Webex, GoToMeeting or Lync...BUT works with Skype, Facetime, Photobooth (June 2013 MBA)

Brand new MacBook Air (June 2013, 8MB RAM, 500GB SSD)
iSight not working with Cisco Webex, Citrix GoToMeeting or Microsoft Lync (error = webcam not detected); BUT iSight works with Skype, Facetime and Photobooth.
3 hours of phone support with Webex - no luck.
Tried SMC and PRAM reset - no luck.
Tried erasing disk and reinstalling OSX 10.8.4 and apps manually with latest versions - no luck.
Apple phone support says it's not Apple's problem because Apple apps work.
Exchanged at Apple Store for another new MacBook Air, again installed apps manually with latest version (not from time machine) - STILL NO LUCK!!!
Is there an update Apple or Cisco, Citrix and Microsoft need to put out for the new MBAs or do I just have 2 lemons???

You're welcome.

It will be interesting to see what the vendors say about using a Mac-compatible external webcam.
If not, some netbook or other Windows® device might offer compatibility at a much lower cost than a compatible Apple notebook.
We will watch for your update(s). What the vendors tell you will be very helpful to others who share this or similar issues with their new MBAs.

• Skype wont work with my mac os 10.5.8

afternoon, tried to download skype on my power book g4 and it after download I try to open the dm and it says wont work with this artitecture.
I am running 10.5.8 after I have download the dm the window that I should put it into the applications had like a do not enter symbol.
Thank you for your help

Your Mac is too old to run it.
http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-mac/
Click the system requirements on that page & you will see…
1GHz Intel processor.
Mac OS X 10.5.8+.
100 MB free disk space.
Either USB or regular headset if your Mac does not have a built-in microphone.
Download drivers if you are using an external webcam.
For voice calls recommend broadband connection with 100 kbps down / 100 kbps up.
For group video calling everyone on the call needs Skype 5.0 for Windows or Mac or higher plus webcams. For best quality we recommend you use a high-speed broadband connection of 4Mbps down/512kbps up and a computer with a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz processor. As a minimum you’ll need a high-speed broad connection of 512kbps down/128kbps up and a computer with a 1 GHz processor.
Your Mac has a Power PC processor not an Intel CPU.
See Skype's FAQ for more info…

• External isight camera used with boot camp

I'm trying to set up my EXTERNAL isight camera with windows vista under bootcamp. I want to be connected to skype (version 5.1) when I'm working on the pc side of my Mac Pro under boot camp. I've upgraded boot camp to the latest version (3.2) but it seems that the only drivers supplied are for built-in isight cameras and these don't work with my camera. I've checked the downloads section of the apple site with out luck. Is there a driver for the external isight camera or is there a way of making the built-in isight drivers work with my camera?

I do not run Windows®, so I do not have a specific suggestion for you. If you do not get the answer you need here, consider the following:

• ISight not working with Apple apps but only with Skype and flash....

Hi guys, don't know why but suddenly my isight stopped working with every apple application, like ichat, imovie and photoboot, but it still works with skype and safari (flash).
The camera simply doesn't work, the green led stays off.... I tried resetting PRAM, SMC, deleted .plist files, tried new account and everything...
Maybe the problem is facetime, I uninstalled it by simply dragging it to the trashcan, so I followed a thread here and manually deleted its last files but no luck....
Please guys help me, I really hope I don't have to FORMAT my mac... sounds so windows to me XD...

(1) Your initial post shows you using Mac OS X (10.6.6),
but your latest post shows Mac OS X (10.6.5).
Have you "downdated" to 10.6.5?
(2) iSight works with iMovie, Photo Booth, QuickTime, and other apps like Address Book,
etc. You need not try every possible app, but please tell us which you have tested,
and which, if any, work with your iSight.
(3) Have you tested iSight operation in more than one user account?
Are the symptoms EXACTLY the same in any user account you test?
(4) If your only problem is with ALL apps in ALL user accounts, try applying the
Combo Update using the method suggested in this recent post:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12859723&#12859723
If you want the latest Mac OS instead of 10.6.5, download the 10.6.6 Combo Update:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
instead of the 10.6.5 Combo (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324) link in the post.
