External Lacie 1tb hd wont mount

My Lacie 1tb hd quadra wont mount via firewire 400 with my iMac 17" intel c2d. The odd thing is that it mounts with usb with no problems and not firewire. I will try it on my old iMac G4 via firewire 400 but for now I need for my time machine backups. If anyone could help that would be great thanks!
BTW: I am checking it with disk utility, but i am not really sure if that will do anything

It may well be your Firewire support in the external drive is not functioning.  This happened to me when my LaCie Rugged Firewire 800 was non-functional although Firewire 400 and USB were fine.  LaCie Canada wouldn’t touch it as I had bought the drive on a trip to the US (while on vacation I only used the Firewire 400 connection and thought all was fine; coming back to Canada I discovered the flawed Firewire 800).  Lesson learned: I’ll never buy LaCie again.  We still use the drive daily via Firewire 400.
Recommend returning the drive immediately to the vendor/manufacturer.  Your next drive may be perfect so don’t delay while you have warranty.

  • External Lacie drive won't mount

I have a older Lacie 160GB LaCie P3 extrenal drive that I can't mount. There never has been an issue with mounting it before in the method described below.
    Here is what happened:
I turned the drive on but the firewire was not connected so I turned the Lacie drive off.
I connected the firewire and turned the Lacie on and the (partitioned) drive mounted on the desktop.
I was looking through the files when I got the error message that the drive was disconnected without being properly ejected which I didn't do.
I tried turning the Lacie drive off and on but it won't mount. I get the same flashing light on the Lacie drive that I had before connecting the firewire.
I tried Disk Utility but it can't see the drive.
I tried connecting to my laptop but it doesn't mount there either or show up in disk utility.
    Questions:
Any idea how I can get it to mount?
Is there any risk of damage to the data by turning it on and off in an effort to get it to mount. I can hear it running.
    Thank you

LIkely (very) your SATA card is fried inside the box for same.
External HD are very easy to diagnose. Bad USB cable (on commercial sold USB drives) almost doesn’t exist anymore.
External USB HD have 4 'parts' (not counting the HD  internals)
    1. USB cable (never an issue anymore, approaching 100%)
    2. HD enclosure.....a plastic or metal box which cannot ever be an issue.
    3. the HD itself
    4. ....and last but not least is the epicenter of 'weak links' ,.....a SATA card/bridge that is connected to the HD inside the HD box, the size of a stick of gum, with SATA female on one side, and female USB on the other side, containing circuitry for data transfer between the SATA on the HD and to USB on the other.
While these bridge cards are better than they used to be, theyre still insanely unreliable.
There are literally probably MORE than 100,000 perfect external hard drives out there thrown away every year because people assume the "hard drive is bad" when really they could crack open the HD enclosure, remove the HD and put the good HD into a new enclosure.
See this video of the SATA CARD, its at 8:55min. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pS_EDsP2KI
All conventional HD external are nearly 100% like the video above.
See pic below,..a (much larger) SATA card as found inside a typical HD enclosure ($20 ebay)
This is the nasty piece pictured below causing all the "crazy" activity seen on external HD, very odd behaviour, some have called it "haunted hard drive syndrome".  Random ejects, random strange vanishing of the HD , especially in mid transfer of data.
the card attached to the TOP of the HD plugs in, that the SATA bridge

  • LACIE HD'S WONT MOUNT. APPLE THINKS I NEED A SEPERATE FIREWIRE CARD.

I have 2 lacie hd's that will not mount they used to mount but now they will not. I have been back and forth to the Mac store and I have been on the phone with Lacie . My drives were tested and my computer was tested and nothing is wrong WITH EITHER. Apple seems to think that my fire wire bus on the computer may be interfering with the HD's and thats why the will not mount. They also said for me to install a fire wire card to just completely avoid using the fire wire ports on my Mac. Does any of this sound normal to you guys? And whats a good fire wire card to buy? Should I just stick with the Lacie brand since I have two lacie HD's?

I'm not sure if this would cause a problem, but you might want to check the filesystem of the hard drive. If it is something other than HFS or HFS+ (these are the apple filesystems) then it might not mount as well, but apple is known to support most filesystems so I don't know if that's the case.
If you want to purchase a firewire card you should go snoop around on www.macsales.com just go into the firewire section, and then into the pci/pcmcia sub section. You did not specify as to which firewire you are in need of (400 or 800) but you can check out that website to see what the deal is.
Also, I HIGHLY recommend the OWC External hard drives if you do not enclose them your self. OWC is www.macsales.com and I have a couple of their external drives (one standard 200GB and one 500GB dual RAID). After a couple years of use, I have never had a problem with my OWC hard drives (well the drive itself isn't made by them, but the enclosure is.)
Anyway, I've been ramblin on and on way too much, but I hope I could have been some help.

  • External Lacie Drive Won't Mount After Improper Disconnection

My internal extra (not the system) drive disappeared. In my panic, I did a lot of things that I don't recall in detail, like restart. That didn't work. I then shut down the Mac Pro w/Snow Leopard  totally, and upon reboot, that worked. The internal drive mounted. But somewhere in the midst of it all, I disconnected my Lacie external HD without ejecting it.
I thought nothing of it until I attempted to remount it and it failed to mount. I then tried on my new MBP (also SL). It wouldn't mount. So I tried the whole shut down/reboot regimen that made my internal drive re-mount. No luck. I even tried using a power plug and USB connection instead of a firewire 800 cable. Oh, and I swapped FW 800 cables too -- nothing.
Next, I tried a 4 disk utility apps including Apple's, but if the thing doesn't MOUNT, none of those apps can 'see' it.
And yes, I did an extensive 2-hour web search to no avail because many people have similar but not the same issues, no one offered a solution that worked for me or the answers are dated.
When connected, it lights up rapidly like it's being read, then remains steady, but nothing happens. Maybe there's just a delay reading it?
The next step will be taking it to Tek Serve unfortunately. I don't understand how one drive re-mounted, but this one, even on a different computer, is just ghost.
Computer: Mac OS x Snow Leopard
    Drive: External LaCie

Hi Kool G4. I think that I'll take a trip to Tek Serve tomorrow and see what they can do. I was hoping for the same luck I had with the internal one re-appearing, but so far nothing.
I guess that every once in a while when something is improperly ejected, the warning is valid. There have been so many improper ejections (not on this drive) that have not resulted in a failed drive. My luck, and on my very important drive. Bummer.
But thanks to all of you for offering your wisdom.
I'm going to leave it overnight plugged in just in case it's just a slow startup issue. *crossing fingers*
Otherwise, I do hope that a specialist can recover the data.

  • External Lacie drive crashed, now I can't find a recent backup for LR3 catalog.

I have LR3 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8.  My catalog, cache and images were stored on an external Lacie 1TB drive (partitioned so it can be used by a pc and mac).  My catalog backup files were saved on another external drive MXTR as well as copies of all my images.  The Lacie had started self ejecting while running LR3 and I thought it was maybe a problem with the cable, as it would work fine after rebooting.  Yesterday it crashed LR3 and never remounted.  I used Disk Utility to try and repair the disk and it instructed me to erase the disk and start over.  I was not worried, since my catalog was backed up to another drive.  10 hours to erase the drive (the drive never quit during this time).  Another 2 hours to copy my images from the MXTR to the Lacie (again the drive never self ejected during this time either).  So now I go to find my most recent backup catalog.  The most recent one I could find was dated 2/09/2012.  I am baffled.  What happened all those times I was backing up?  I upgraded to LR3 in 2011, and I don't remember ever telling it to backup to another folder or drive.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

What happened all those times I was backing up?
We can't possibly know what happend or where your backups are. But you can indeed search all of your available hard disks and see if there are any files named *.LRCAT with recent dates.
By the way, I would be extremely wary of using that Lacie drive any more. If it was me, I'd replace it.

  • HELP! External Lacie Drive wont mount!

    Hi Guys,
I have a really important problem. I'm currently working with two 4Big Lacie Drives. Both drives were working fine last week. But I go to turn it on today and the 8TB drive (the other being a 4TB), wont mount. This drive has been working fine for about a month. It hasn't been knocked or anything, and was locked away over the weekend.
Today the drive can be seen in Disk Utility but I cant repair or verify the disk. And the one partition it has doesn't show up like its sister drive does. I have tried different power supplies and cables, as well as connecting it to another mac.
It is really important I get this drive working, as I am working to a tight deadline and fear I do not have time to re-format and then re-copy all 8TB of video I need onto this drive (FYI my files are backed up but in another location).
Please let me know any thoughts sASAP. And sorry if I havent included enough info.
    Thanks,
    Phil.

Most likely the external AC power supply brick is bad. If the drive is under warranty LaCie will replace the brick no charge and if it is not they sell the supplies on their website for around $20 US.

  • My new mini won't recognize an external drive (LaCie 1TB  porsche design)....any ides why?

Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display......no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini. Any help would be appreciated!

    Three questions.
    1. Have you got Finder > Preferences set to show external disks?
    2. Does it show/mount in Disk Utility (and if so have you verified it there)?
    3. What format is it?

  • Lacie 1TB external HDD recently stopped doing Time Machine backups. Disk Utility recommends that the disk needs to be repaired.

I've been using my Lacie 1TB external HDD for my Time Machine backups for quite sometime. Its never given me any problems until now.
It recently stopped doing the backups, so I checked Disk Utility and it recommended that I repair the disk. How long does it take for Disk Utility to repair a 1TB external HDD?
    Other things to consider:
    - Cant find the disk in the Finder, I used to be able to do that before.
    - When I tried to go a Time Machine backup, it said the disk was not available.
Upon using disk utiliy, I successfully verified the disk. Then I initiated the disk repair process.
    The current status:
    - checking file system
    - Volume repair complete
    - Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
The progress bar says "Verify and Repair volume "LaCie"" - the progress bar does not indicate how much has been done or how long it will take.
    Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,476,416 Bytes)
    Mount Point: Not Mounted
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    All other status fields blank.
Any one know how long it will take for Disk Utility to repair the external HDD? Any other ideas as to how I can get the Lacie HDD to reconnect with the Macbook and resume normal operations? i.e. Time Machine backups, accessing contents through the Finder.

  • Trouble with Lacie 1TB external hard disk

Recently got a Lacie 1TB external hard disk.  Need to get as close to 1TB actual capacity as I can.
Used cfdisk to create a single Linux partition, and thought I tried to "maximize" the size.
Used mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 to create the file system.
Tried to mount the disk.   The first go around apparently failed (dmesg said there was no journal).
I repeated all of the above and the second time it mounted, but "df -h" reports:
    /dev/sdb1             925G  200M  878G   1% /mnt/external_1
    What the hell happened?
Can someone please advise on how to fix this, and actually maximize the real available space?  Please include the exact utilities and flags you would recommend.
    thanks much.

    lucke,
i know disks always have less capacity than the nominal size.  but a 1TB disk should have more than 900 MB available.  possibly as much as 980 MB.  that would be commensurate with my past experience using other external drives.  over 200 GB used off the bat is ridiculous, and i've never seen anything like that before.
as a revised question to people out there, which fs would you recommend to get the most out of this disk.  it's going to have 900+ GB of files, each almost exactly 170 MB, and will be processed via the USB2 interface.

  • Lacie 1TB External HDD just went ghost

I was using my computer this afternoon and ejected my harddrives to take the MBP to another room. When I mounted everything back, my Lacie 1TB USB 3.0 HDD just didn't mount. I have 2x of the same HDD and a WD 2TB. All of them are Mac Journaled, one Lacie is configured as Time Capsule and the other is just backup for music, FCP files, etc.
I've switched USB ports, USB Cables, everything. It doesnt show up on Disk Utility either.
It always asked to Force Eject as Spotlight was forever indexing this HD.
    Any thoughts?

  • LaCie 1TB external hard drive can not connect to E4200

I have my LaCie 1TB external hard drive plugged into the USB-port of the Linksys E4200 so I can access that drive wireless.
However, in my disk management (via Cisco Connect), it does not show under Storage > Disk.
How can I solve this so I can access this hard drive from any computer in the network?
The drive is formatted in NTFS.
    Thanks

Connect the hard drive directly to the computer and make sure that your computer can detect the hard drive.
If it is detected and working properly on your computer then connect the hard drive the USB port on the router.
Follow this link to setup storage device connected to E3000 router.

  • My dumb external LaCie won't mount.....AAARRRGGHH!!!

I'm really hoping someone can help me here. I was working on some illustrations and in Manga studio debut, i opened a window to post some work i created into my external harddrive. I mistakenly hit the "eject" symbol that unmounted my hard-drive from my computer. So i said to myself,"No biggie... i'll just shut the drive off, unplug it, wait awhile, replug it, shut it on and it'll mount again.
    nope.
I shut it off, unplug it, restart the computer. plug it and turn the external harddrive power on... nothing. i wait patiently thinking it'll eventually kick in.
    no kicking.
i'm a 40 year old man i'm contemplating crying now... because more than 200 gigs of important work is on my drive and i can't access it.
That and stupid Leopard can't even do the most basic commands.. like accessing my printer. Just get that dumb beachball. Even opening System preferences gives me problems. More beachball.
I'm looking for help here. Please help.
How can i shed my computer of the recent upgrade and go back to 10.5.2?
and Since nothing can be wrong with my LaCie by just unmounting it, what can i do to get it to mount? Just leave it plugged on and powered and pray that the OS recognizes it and hope it mounts?
I don't have that kind of time.
If i need to retrieve all that data onto another new external, how much will that cost me?
I know i'm asking a lot of questions, but i'm desperate here.

The problem is that it won't mount after it has been unmounted. A friend of mine who's a Mac Repairman told me that it could be a number of things...
he told me to check if any smells were coming from the drive...
    nope. check.
If the fan had stopped working... nope. check.
If it's a problem being caused by the enclosure.... that i'm going to check on.
I called TekServe in Manhattan and when i get paid, i'm going to see if that's the case.
But they want 1200.00 for data retrieval in a worse case scenario... and i'm going to shop around for that one. I have a feeling that they corner the market in that area for Mac repair and they probably feel they can charge whatever they want and people will pay.
1200.00 is another computer. I'd rather do my research before shelling out that kind of dough.
I had unwittingly unmounted my first external 3 years ago .... it's a Wacom, and it mounted with no problem after literally a minute.
So i don't know why this LaCie is giving me problems.
So i'll try changing enclosures and check out reports for the companies with the best all-around reports on their externals before i buy.
It may not last forever, but i should get better than an external HD's "refusal" to mount once unmounted.
    It just doesn't make sense.
Besides, i have a feeling that my computer won't register it's existence if it doesn't mount to make itself known.
    Tell me if i'm off.
BUt i will consider the other programs that you guys have suggested.

  • LaCie 1TB Big Disk not mounting as a shared device

    Hi!
Today, I purchased a brand new AirPort Extreme 802.11n to replace my now dead NetGear WGR614. The set-up went well, but I have a query.
I also own a LaCie 1TB Big Disk connected to the AEBS via ethernet as a NAS Drive. The disk itself is set-up with Apple File Server and Bonjour Services enabled. With my NetGear WGR614, the hard drive would automatically appear in the Shared Devices column in Finder. The only way I have been able to achieve this same outcome is to log into the drive using Command-K and then adding it to the Login Items in the Accounts Preference Pane. This is so it will automatically appear connected in the Shared Devices column after a restart.
I have spent the morning searching many and varied forums for a solution, but almost all entries deal with USB connected drives.
If anyone has some information they would like to share, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Rodger.

    Solved on the MacTalk.com.au forums.
