External LaCie Problems

Hi,
I have a 160GB LaCie external hardrive which I accidentally unplugged during a data-transfer. Since doing that it will not appear on my desk top no matter what connection method i use (firewire or USB). I've tried connecting it to other computers with no luck. I don't even no where to begin with this so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi, OldhamCorp. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "I have a 160GB LaCie external hardrive which I accidentally unplugged during a data-transfer. Since doing that it will not appear on my desk top no matter what connection method i use..."I suspect the Repair Disk function of Disk Utility will not correct this problem.
What has likely happened is that the drive's partition map has been corrupted. This can happen if you disconnect or power-off an external storage device — particularly hard drives — without first ejecting the drive, such as you described. Power failures can have the same effect, which is why desktop FireWire/USB hard drives that use mains power should be run off an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), like desktop computers.
If Disk Utility > Repair Disk does not fix the drive, then you'll need to employ data recovery techniques to recover the data from the drive, then reformat the drive. See my "Data Recovery" FAQ for comprehensive advice that may help you with this problem.
Good luck!

  • Drag and Drop backup copy of data to external Lacie problems.  Mavericks

Trouble with Drag and Drop copies to external Lacie drive has gone from bad to worse.  Mac CPU Senior advisor was stumped after 4 hours.  It's been bucked up to the engineers.  Do you have any ideas? First, Time Machine/Time Capsule to the newest Mac airport extreme is working fine.  This drag and drop problem started mid 10.8.  Came up with some work arounds.  It's worse with 10.9.  When I drag and drop data folders (Current IMac, Mavericks, thunderbolt to current Lacie 4tb) the copy starts ok, but randomly stops with the following window.
I'm then unable to complete to drag and drop from the source folder to the Target folder on the Lacie external.   Occassionally if I retry, I get a window allowing "merge" of source and target.   This works, but merge isn't offered with every folder.
.DS_Store files are hidden and in every folder as we know.  They are supposed to be "ignored" when transferring data.  They are for the most part, but randomly stop the copy of a folder.  Any thoughts?
thanks alot...can you beat Apple engineers to the answer?  I'm still trying work arounds

    Hi, Rich -
So it wouldn't be an easy and fast way to make a bootable backup of the internal HD?
As a matter of fact, it is an easy way to do that. I do it all the time.
    There is a trick, though...
When a volume (volume = an unpartitioned drive, or a partition of a partitioned one) is dragged to another volume, Finder will copy the whole thing to the destination drive, placing everything in a new folder on the destination drive; that folder will be named the same as the original (source) drive.
An OS 9 System Folder works best when it is at the root level of a volume. This means that after the copying is done, the System Folder should be moved out of the folder created on the destination drive. It is best to also move the Applications (Mac OS 9) and Documents folders out to the root level of the drive.
A few aliases may need to be fixed - the pathname to the original for a copied alias will still point to the original original, the one on the source drive, rather than to an original on the destination drive. Ones that may need fixing are - the one for Sherlock in the Apple menu (it can be found in the Apple Menu Items folder in System Folder); and perhaps a few in the Application Support folder in System Folder.
You will see a couple of additional folders in the new folder on the destination drive - one named Desktop, the other Trash. These will contain copies of items left lying on the desktop, and anything left unflushed in the Trash at the time of the copy process.

  • Problem burning purchased  iTunes to external LaCie CD-RW drive

My internal CD drive on my Mac G4: OS 10.3.9 is broken, so I have purchased a LaCie CD-RW 1394 external drive.
If I put in a blank CD, it says " You have inserted a blank CD. Choose what to do from the pop-up menu. Action: (Choices: Open Finder, Open iTunes, Open Other Application or Run Script) Name: (untitled CD), then a box to check for: Make this action the default, followed by Eject, ignore or OK". If I type in a name, the CD ejects, so I just click ignore.
I have tried to place the iTunes onto Toaster, they will copy to toaster, but they will not play from the toaster window before or after burning the disk. Songs from Music CD's will play before and after burning thru toaster.
Can you please help me figure out how to burn purchased iTunes onto a CD using an external LaCie driver?

    GAgirl8772,
Videos you bought at the iTunes Store are protected (the movie companies insisted on that), so you can't extract the sound and burn that to CD.
To post a new question, go to a forum, not a category.
Example: iTunes for Windows is a category (click on the blue text to go there). You can't post there. Instead, first select a forum: e.g. Using iTunes for Windows and you will find a Post New Topic item near the top left.

  • Connection failed when trying to connect to external Lacie hard disk

I have an external Lacie hard disk which sits under and is connected to my Airport Extreme base station. I access that volume by using the 'Connect to Server' option in the finder, and I can see the Lacie drive when I get to the stage where I click to 'browse' and then click the Network icon.
However, today instead of connecting as usual (after asking for password authorisation, etc.) I now get a temporary window message saying:
"Looking up, "x1-6........local..." I guess the IP address?
After 3 minutes I then get the following error message:
    CONNECTION FAILED
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
Yesterday I had a problem with my MacPro while trying to access info on the Lacie volume and with no response from the MacPro to shut down, I had to hold the start button down to get it to shut down. I then turned the Airport Express and Lacie disk off at the main plug powerpoint (I forgot to dismount the Lacie volume from another Mac running!). Hoping this would reset everything, but now this problem has happened!
Any help or advice on this would be much appreciated as I hold some key financial and business info on the Lacie volume and I can't access it now!!!
    Thanks

    Hi Rick
    That's worked!
I did reboot Airport Extreme initially (had to switch off power to AEBS and Lacie disk as looks like there is no power switch on the AEBS?...and tried, but same problem. But then tried this again and all now works as before.
Thanks for your advice and the direct connection tip, which I was considering doing anyway if the conventional route didn't work.
    Phew!

  • How do I install OSX10.5 using an external LaCie DVD Drive?

I purchased a External LaCie Drive recommended by Apple Genius Bar to affordably replace a dead internal DVD drive on an older iMac G4. I bought a family package of Leopard OSX10.5 and installed 10.5 on my main computer (G5) using its internal drive. Trying to install it on my G4 desktop using the external drive, the install program will not boot the G4 holding down the C key during start up. How do you boot up with an external drive so you can download a new system?

Thanks for entering this discussion. I booted with the option key down and it showed the only drive recognized for start up is my main HD even though I had the 10.5 Installation disk in the external DVD player burner.. That was the gist of my problem. My G4 will not recognize the USB External DVD player burner Drive for start up. Once booted up from my HD anything I put on the DVD drive is viewed- a CD, a DVD, an commercial movie, even OSX 10.5 Installation. But when I try to install it, it asks to "restart" but can't restart using a system other than the one on my HD which prevents the installation procedure from ocurring.
The ATA CD/DVD disk drive in my G4 will only play CDs and it is not recognized booting up with option key down when the DVD installation disk is in it. Do you know if Apple supplies OSX 10.5 in CD format? or a system startup I could use in my internal drive on CDs that if booted would allow me to go right to Install. If I could start up on a CD formated system, I think I could then open the installation disk on my external DVD Player and install it.

  • External Lacie drive crashed, now I can't find a recent backup for LR3 catalog.

I have LR3 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8.  My catalog, cache and images were stored on an external Lacie 1TB drive (partitioned so it can be used by a pc and mac).  My catalog backup files were saved on another external drive MXTR as well as copies of all my images.  The Lacie had started self ejecting while running LR3 and I thought it was maybe a problem with the cable, as it would work fine after rebooting.  Yesterday it crashed LR3 and never remounted.  I used Disk Utility to try and repair the disk and it instructed me to erase the disk and start over.  I was not worried, since my catalog was backed up to another drive.  10 hours to erase the drive (the drive never quit during this time).  Another 2 hours to copy my images from the MXTR to the Lacie (again the drive never self ejected during this time either).  So now I go to find my most recent backup catalog.  The most recent one I could find was dated 2/09/2012.  I am baffled.  What happened all those times I was backing up?  I upgraded to LR3 in 2011, and I don't remember ever telling it to backup to another folder or drive.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

What happened all those times I was backing up?
We can't possibly know what happend or where your backups are. But you can indeed search all of your available hard disks and see if there are any files named *.LRCAT with recent dates.
By the way, I would be extremely wary of using that Lacie drive any more. If it was me, I'd replace it.

  • Serious external drive problems after installing Mavericks

OK, so now I am seeing multiple external drive problems. Here is my setup: A GTech 4TB drive connected to MacBook Pro via Firewire, formatted of 2 partitions of 2TB each (called GT1 and GT2). This is then daisy chained to two WD drives of 2TB each, called WD1 and WD2.
After installing Mavericks everything worked fine (in fact I have an amazing speed increase). However, after restarting my machine this morning I have the following issues:
The GTech is now a single partition called MyBook (obviously a hangover from the WD drives. I suspect the WD drive managment software) with NO data files. Interestingly it shows the following USED 1,106,870,272 bytes (1.11 GB on disk). This suggests that one of the partitions has disapeared completely.
Whilst WD 1 launces ok, WD 2 causes the Finder to relaunch whenever selected, meaning I can't get to the files. I remember having this problem before when I upgraded to SL, and it having something to do with hidden files that needed to be deleted via the terminal. However, I have searched the web and can't find the solution again.
Given that WD 1 and 2 are my backups of GT 1 and 2, then I now have a situation where I cannot access my primary or backup files for GT 2. Very impressive - not!
Can anbody remember the hidden file solution for the finder relaunch?
Can anybody help me get back my GT1 and 2 partitions (as they have the latest work on them)?

FIrewire & Thunder bolt drives are having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
    Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
Recommend anyone DO NOT ATTACH any WD MyBook externals (firewire, thunderbolt or otherwise).
I dont have same to test, so I dont know if the problem is in the firmware on the SATA bridge or if its a problem with the WD software

  • USB quits after 10.4.11 update and can't read external Lacie drive contents

Performed update through Software Updater. (After reading this forum, I now know better for future updates) Now, my USB ports don't work and external Lacie drive looks blank. Plugged USB devices into PC and they work fine. From PC on same network, I can see all the files on the Lacie. Repaired disk permissions, shut down and unplugged everything, even power cord, and let it "think" for several hours. Still same problems. USB lights up for a few seconds then shuts down. Tried all USB ports, same problem. I can connect to external HD but it appears that all the files are gone.

    Still not working.
I ran applejack, then re-installed the combo upgrade for 10.4.11, gave it several restarts, still no USB power or access to external HD. One thing that I notice, when starting up and the grey screen is up, the USB is lit. As soon as the little clock thing starts "running" in a circle, the lights go out. If I unplug then re-plug the USB devices, the lights come on for just a few seconds and then go out. Same results with and without USB hub in both ports. This is our old machine used mostly by kids for iTunes so we must attach the iPod to it or they will be on the new iMac, fresh out of the box!
BTW, we were 'tricked' into this upgrade. iTunes gave an error message saying that we had to upgrade or some features would no longer work. After the upgrade, iTunes said it would not load until we upgraded the OS X. I just jumped from 10.4.3 to 10.4.11 because that was the latest version. I have always trusted Apple and never had a problem, until now

  • 10.4 Installation on External Lacie Firewire Drive

    Hi -
I have a number of Macs running 10.4 and each has an external Lacie firewire drive attached, with a partition for an external startup drive. I recently bought a new Lacie 250 GB Porsche firewire drive to rplace a smaller Porsche model, but I cannot install OSX 10.4 on it because the install disk does not recognize the external drive as an installation source. I have upgraded the firmware on the drive but that has made no difference. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be and help me figure out how to install the operating software on the external drive? Thanks for your help.
    Shelly

Thanks for your reply. The drive is actually being used on a G4 tower that's about 6 years old. I partitioned the drive into two sections: about 7GB for the operating system and the remainder of the 250GB for backup purposes. Neither volume shows up on the Tiger insdtall disk as a source for the installation (by the way, I also tried it on my G3 iBook, with the same results).

  • Burn to Lightscribe DVD+R media on External LaCie d2 DVD burner fails

Recently the Superdrive in my iMac G4 has failed where it would no longer burn DVD's reliably. I purchased a LaCie external firewire DVD burner and have been very impressed with its speed and overall compatibility.
I have created several DVDs from iDVD 5.0.1 (written to disk images) and then burned them to DVD-R media using "Disk Utility" with no problems. When I tried to burn them to LightScribe DVD+R media, the burn occurs with no errors and the DVD mounts and plays fine from the LaCie burner. However, trying to play the DVD from my original SuperDrive or in my home DVD players, does not work.
Is there some incompatibility I am unaware of? I believe I created one lightscribe DVD from Toast 7 where I was playing around with duplicating an existing DVD I had and it worked fine. I think the media I used in that case was one provided with the drive and I burned it from toast.
My lightscribe media is Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R media (30 pack). I don't want to consider these coasters. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

It identified write restrictions, but my goal was to write a playable DVD and it fails in both my SuperDrive and off-the-shelf DVD players.
Thanks for the idea, but I'm not sure that this is the issue in this case. Is there some basic compatibility issue with using DVD+R media as a playable DVD for most off-the-shelf players?

  • EMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.

eMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.
    eMac 700 MHz running OS X 4.4
Came without DVD or modem internal
    Has 256mb memory
Bought a used Lacie 1394 Firewire DVR External.
Was able to burn DVD’s and CD’s with Toast 6 Light.
Cannot find the “DVD Player” on the hard drive.
    It will read data DVD.
eMac will not read any movies burnt or bought.
I was told I probably need more memory?
Thought running IDVD would fix the problem.
    No Soap.
This machine was giving external modem problems before Tiger was installed.
Before we spend more money or just get ride of the eMac.
    What is the DVD problem?
This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.

  • Capture problem, external HD problem

Please, help!!! I stated having problem with capture from my mini DV Cannon. FCE 4.01 does not recognize it. My portable Lacie started to shut down too. I deleted and reloaded FCE 4.0. Capture was working, but I could not read the project that I managed to finish in 4.01. I upgraded 4.0 to 4.01 and started having the same problems. capture does not work, LaCie shut down. Help!!!!!

    Hi
    Just thinking.
    • Your internal boot hard disk has > 25GB free space ? Important
    • Your external LaCie - formatted as Mac OS Extended - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange do not work !
    • FireWire - USB/USB2 performs badly
    • Energy Save - Turned OFF ! and so not to set hard disk to rest - not good when working with video.
    • So goes for ScreenSavers too.

  • External LaCie HD  to display both  its  Mac and PC partitons. HOW?

My external HD (LaCie 250 Gb) is partitioned this way:
    180 Gb - Mac formatted
    70Gb - PC formatted
The partition has been done a few years back with Mac OSX 10.2 using its standard disk utility - that’s all I know about tech details of this setup.
The only problem is that when I plug this LaCie 250 Gb into my MacBookPro , only Mac partition is visible.
PC formatted partition does not appear at all.
(My Mac displays any other external PC formatted drives without any problems)
How to make this external LaCie HD to display both its Mac and PC partitions on my Mac?
Thank you all who help me!

    The PC partition is FAT32.
The program you suggested is commercial but I just can't afford to spend on software that may or may not be suitable...
Any other options to see this PC partition on my Mac, fellow Mac users?

  • Issue With Backing Up Video Onto External LaCie Drive

I captured some video onto my external LaCie Drive. I am now backing everything up onto a second LaCie drive, but some files will not copy over. I've tried copying to my desktop and then to that drive but that does not work either. I get a pop-up saying,
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (Error Code 0)"
    Any idea what's causing this?

Did you reformat both drives to MacOS Extended?
If not, that could be part of your problem. LaCie sells a lot of drives and some of them come as MS-DOS compatible (aka FAT-32 formatted) which causes all sorts of problems with Mac systems.

  • External LaCie Drives

I have a MacPro (late 2013) running OS10.10.1 with 2 external LaCie drives (2tb Little Big Drive and 4 tb D2) connected via Thunderbolt.  The problem is that these drives regularly eject themselves and I get the message about not ejecting the disc correctly.
I'm not sure if this is a LaCie issue or MacPro Thunderbolt issue - this is my first experience with Thunderbolt.  Any ideas?

I have four La Cie TB externals connected without issues over the past 1.5 years. Here's my Energy pane screen shot.
