External link in a PDF

How can I access an external link from a PDF?

Here's a screen shot of Preview opening a part of my iPhone User Guide with a section highlighted.  If you can't highlight a section, check "Tools > Rectangular Selection" in Preview's menu and try that.

  • External link to location in PDF not working

I can't get an external link to open to a specific place in a PDF.  I have tried the code for named destination and a page number and nothing is working.  I actually found some good documentation on line that should me all the parameters that could be passed, unfortunately, they aren't working.
Here are the ways I have test linking into the PDF:

The link is stored on a wiki... but I didn't think that would make a difference.  The PDF was created using Acrobat 9.0 from a Word document.  I have made sure that the document does not have any security.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions that might help me get this to work.
I know this is shocking, but I did actually read the documentation.  LogOut is a bookmark I made with no spaces in the name.  I'm not sure what else to try.  If you have some examples or suggestions please let me know.
    Thanks for your help.
    Take care.

The link was copied from a post I'd made to AUC from back in 2008; so, yes it can/does work.
    I've used PDF Open parameters with MSIE 5, 6, 7, & 8.
During use of any particular MSIE release I always keep it updated as MS rolls out the updates.
Used Adobe Reader 5, 6, 7, 8,  & 9 - each updated as Adobe rolled out the updates.
    Used Acrobat 5 (Full), Pro 6, 7, 8, 8 3D, 9 (Pro Extd).
Again, as updates are rolled out they are applied.
    Just checked again with:
MSIE 6 (fully updated) & Adobe Reader 9.3.2
    MSIE 8 (fully updated) & Acrobat 3D (8.2.2)
MSIE 8 (fully  updated) & Acrobat 9 Pro Extd (9.3.2)
For all, the open parameter performed as expected.
Source PDF's Initial View is page only.
Rendered in browser showing bookmarks and opened to the specified page.
As to MSIE add-ons; this varies with the MSIE release.
IE 6 shows less than IE 8.
Various threads at Acrobat User Community may be informative.
    For keyword search: "open parameters"
    For Author search: "daka630"
    At AUC Forum Search:
    http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/search.php
5th post to this thread has the link I used above as well as some others -
    http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewtopic.php?id=15061
n.b., tried the links you provided - nothing appears in the browser - same if I delete # and all subsequent characters after the file extension.
As to "installs" - basically, I run with the out-of-the-box installs; nothing "custom".
One thing that is common to the Adobe Reader/MSIE 6 & the various Acrobat/MSIE8 checks I just did is that for "Documents" in the Preferences the 'Open Setting' of "Restore last view settings when reopening documents" is not ticked.
-- just an end note here, open parameters have been around since at least Acrobat 4.x

  • How can I hyperlink from FM to an external document and make the links work in PDF-XChange Viewer?

A couple of months ago some of you kindly taught me how to insert links to an external document in FrameMaker. The syntax that made all the difference, was the following:
    message openfile "H:/folder name/to/your/file.ext"
I converted my FrameMaker file to PDF format using Acrobat Distiller, and everything worked like a charm when the users opened the resulting PDF document in Acrobat Reader.
Much to my frustration, someone has now decided that the organisation should use PDF-XChange Viewer instead of Acrobat Reader, and my links don't work anymore... Nothing happens when you click on them. (This only applies to links to external documents. Links to e.g. websites work nicely.)
Has anybody got any idea what I could do to make the links work in PDF-Xchange Viewer as well? Or am I trying to do the impossible now?

    Hi jeromemonange,
Here is some information about creating hyperlinks in a PDF, both to external sources, such as a website, or to another page within the PDF: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/X/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7cb7.w .html

  • Disable warning dialogs for external links in PDF?

Greetings. I'm at the final stages of an interactive PDF and during the review cycle, the client is noticing warning boxes each time they open a link to an external web address. I'm fairly sure that if you are using a purchased Acrobat instead of the free reader, you have the option on the first external link to allow access for all links. But, if you are using the free reader, every time you activate a different external link, you must "allow" it to open (is this true?). Those messages are annoying the client (in spite of the wisdom of the security). Is there anything I can do on the creation side to disable those warnings?
The document is being created using InDesign CS6 in OSX-10.9.5.
    Thanks!
    Tim

The warnings can be disabled by configuring their security user preferences, which are the same in Acrobat and Reader. In Reader 11, look at:
Edit > Preferences > Trust Manager > Internet Access from PDF Files outside the web browser > Change Settings

  • How to force external links to open in new browser window/tab?

Greetings. I'm here because searching elsewhere kept coming up with references to javascript. I've created an interactive PDF with both internal and external links. It works just fine when viewed in either Acrobat or Reader. However, it is being downloaded to users' browsers and when they access the external URLs, the new sites replace the existing page in the same window.
Is there a simple way for me to include an action in the PDF prior to distribution that will force it to open external URLs in a new browser window or tab?
And for the record, I barely know how to spell Javascript, much less how to write or implement it. So if there is a simple solution, I hope you can also help walk me through the steps to implement it.
    Thanks a ton.

    There are two issues here:
    - How to do it using JS
    - How to do it in a non-Adobe browser plugin
The first is pretty straight forward. You use a code like this, replacing the dummy URL with your own:
    app.launchURL("http://www.example.com", true);
The second issue is more problematic, and in fact there isn't really a solution to it. If the plugin used supports this method then it will work, if not, then you're out of luck. Unfortunately, outside of the Adobe software I don't think that any other plugin supports it.

  • Links breaking once PDF documents packaged

Good afternoon, I'm starting off with a word document that I create hyperlinks to files and folders on a shared drive.  I save the file as a PDF and all of the links work fine.  But once I package the individual PDF documents into one package all of the external hyperlinks break.  Internal links to bookmarks within the document itself work but anything pointing outside of the document or to other documents within the package break.
I am able to use the "tools, advanced edit" to edit the hyperlink to correct the link that points to an individual document or file, but it won't allow me to point to a folder on a shared drive.  I have to select a file within the folder.
Is it possible to package the PDF's without the links breaking to begin with?  If not how can I fix the links to point to a folder?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Mark

In Windows, a PDF link annotation's action does not support folders/directories as link targets.
You mention making a "package" - is this an Acrobat 8 "Package"?
If so, you would be creating an entirely new PDF that contains the selected files as attachments within the new PDF.
Having changed the "environment" any external links that any of the attached files (within the "Package" PDF) have still have the explicit link syntax to a target external to the contents of the "Package" PDF.
Or, restated - Any existing links within one attached PDF to another PDF attached within the "Package" do not have a link syntax pointing to the second PDF within the "Package".
To have a link between files in a "Package" you'd have to make them manually with the Link tool.
As to "Bookmarks" in MS Word - If within a Word file they will carry over into the output PDF.
If from one MS Word file to another they do not. All you can get is a link to the target Word file.
Note that if the link you make to the target MS Word file is explicitly to a *.doc or *.docx file that is what the target will be for the link in an output PDF.
The Word to PDF process cannot/does not change the file extension form *.doc/*.docx to *.pdf.

  • External link opening in a loop

    Hi all,
We have a requirement of adding an external link as a new area under the 'Overview' in the Home Page Framework for ESS.
I carried out the following steps -
    - Create a z-resource for the url, in window name mention u2018_blanku2019. In the url path mention the url of the link to be called. Eg. Http://www.google.com.
    - Create a z-area.
    - Assign z-area to area group page (SAPDEFAULTESS_ERP2005).
    - Create a z-subarea.
    - Assign z-subarea to z-area.
    - Create a z-service, mention u2018service typeu2019 as u2018direct URL launched in separate windowu2019.
    - Assign z service to the z-subarea
    - Go to content admin and do the following settings :
o create a new iview using the i-view template.
o Select template SAP WebDynpro i-view
o Select application type as u2018WD fo Javau2019.
o Enter application name as u2018sap.com/pcui_gp~xssutils/XssMenuAreau2019, namespace as u2018XssMenuAreau2019, and application parameter
    as u2018sap.xss.menuarea=ZNEWAREA&sap.xss.menuargrp=SAPDEFAULTESS_ERP2005&sap.xss.menuhdr=SAPDEFAULTu2019
    Where,
 sap.xss.menuarea will be the name of New Area you will create in SPRO,
 sap.xss.menuargrp is the name of Area group as in SPRO and
 sap.xss.menuhdr is the name of header as given in SPRO.
o Change u2018open in new windowu2019 property of the iview to u2018Nou2019.
o Create a WD proxy page and add the iview as a delta link to the page.
    - Now create a workset, and assign the page to the workset
    - Add the pcd link of the page to the resource in spro.
I have done these settings in both our sandbox portal as well as our development portal. The link is opening correctly in the sandbox portal.
However, the link is opening in a loop that takes us to u2018Overview' page over and over again in the development portal.
We are unable to point out the cause of this difference in behaviour between the two portals inspite of the same settings.
Any pointers on how we can rectify this issue will be appreciated.
    TIA.

    Dear varkgirl:
Thank you very much for your help and valuable suggestion.
I've tried your suggestion but ran into some problems. The links I am trying to open in another window are actually PDF files that the viewer can download from my website.
Since I was having problems I decided to try something else. After publishing the website to my desktop I then opened the pages where the links are in Dreamweaver. The layout view is great and displayed the image just the way it appears on the browser's window. I first selected the "link button" to the file and then in the inspector windows (bottom of the page) I chose under target the "_blank" option. This tells the software that the linked page or file is to be opened in a new blank browser window. I then saved the page (re-saved it over the existing file) to incorporate the changes. After this I proceeded to navigate through the website and everything works great.
Thank you for your help and suggestions. I just thought I would post this here in case it may be of help to you as well as others.
    Best regards,
    Joseph Chamberlain

  • Merge documents with external links

    Hi all,
I am wondering if there is a way to automatically change external links to internal links upon merging two or more documents.
    For example:
I have a pdf document containing a table of contents with links that point to separate "section" or "chapter" pdf files within the same root directory structure.
I would like to merge all of the pdf files into a sinlge document and maintain the table of contents.  Currently, when I merge the documents, the table of contents links still point to the external files.  I would like the links to point to the location of the sections in the new, merged, master document.
Is there an easy way to do this without manually changing the links?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I don't think it's possible, at least not in any simple way.

  • Audio stops when external link clicked on?

    Hi
I have a V/O audio file which read out eveything which is shown on a slide. Some of my slides have external links to either websites or PDF downloads and if they are clicked on while the audio is still going it will stop. Is there anyway of the user to still be able to click on external links and have the audio still play?
    I am using Captivate 5.5.
    Cheers

    Hi There,
    Welcome To Adobe Forum.
Can you please try the following steps to see if that work for you.
1     Insert the video/audio file that you have on the slide
    2.    Then insert a button to the slide using which you can open a link or a file externally.
    3.    Now on the button "Action" properties use the "open URL or file" option and then check the box "Continue playing the project" as shown in the image below:
    4. Now publish the file and play it.
    Thanks
    Loveesh

  • WebHelp fine with external links, but AIR output isn't.

Sorry for the repost, but I did not get any eyeballs by posting this in the Adobe AIR or Other Single Source layouts forums. Hoping to get some experts' opinions here.
I have this problem with using the AIR packager for RH7 as well as RH8. Please advise.
My RoboHelp project has a bunch of links to external files such as XMLs, HTMLs, JAVA, etc.(some are local files that I add later to the WebHelp output while others are HTTP links). When I generate the AIR output, these links do not work. The link is clickable, but when clicked, the content of the external file just does not load. I checked that the files do exist, so it's not an issue about missing files.
The generated WebHelp output works absolutely fine.
How do I resolve this? It seems the AIR packager was designed to ignore external links. Is it absolutely uncommon to have external links in a RoboHelp project?
    Thanks,
    K

    Hi Kutra
Have you tried using a Redirect topic for these? I'm curious if that may be a workaround for you.
    To create a Redirect Topic:
Create a new topic in RoboHelp.
    Edit the HTML code.
In the HTML code are a few tags that begin with the word META.
You want to insert a new line that looks like this:
    <meta HTTP-EQUIV=refresh CONTENT="0;URL=Path/FileName.DOC">
    <meta HTTP-EQUIV=refresh CONTENT="0;URL=Path/FileName.XLS">
    <meta HTTP-EQUIV=refresh CONTENT="0;URL=Path/FileName.PDF">
Note that you would only insert a single line. I listed what it might look like for three different files.
The position of the tag shouldn't be important. However, sometimes I find that I do have to play a bit with exactly where I insert it in order to coax RoboHelp into accepting it. I've never noted a "magick" position that works every tiime through. I really wish RoboHelp offered an option that says "leave this code alone!".
Please try that and see if it is successful or if it fails miserably.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Getting exception in log - Invalid external link base url

    Hi,
I am using BI-Publisher Release 10.1.3.4 and I see that for all the reports I have in it, the below line is coming in my bi-publisher log.
[092010_053617793][][EXCEPTION] Invalid external link base url: 'http://10.177.219.162:9704/xmlpserver/' -- the ip is my machine ip address.
This line comes for every executing of the report. This is not causing any unwanted behavior but having an exception in log is always a concern from field.
Can any one let me know what could be the reason for that exception?

    Hi,
I come across the issue when I tried to view the BI Publisher report, the pdf report didnt load up and throws "[072811_123101921][][EXCEPTION] Invalid external link base url:" on the server console.
with some the Acrobat error like "there is no page to display"
Then I checked if the data was there or not in database table to which i had connected through the jdbc conection. I found that no data was present in the database tables. So i run the ETL process again setting some flags in the source database and then the data came up in the BI Publisher connected database.
Then when I started Bi Publisher server and viewed the reports, it worked.

  • Help With Movie That Continues to play when an External Link text button is clicked

    I'm using Captivate 3.
I have a movie with Various Text Buttons one of my buttons in this particular module i'm creating when clicked opens an external PDF file for viewing.
However, my movie in the background keeps playing when i need it to stay on that Menu Screen with the various buttons.
Ideally so the user when done viewing the External PDF can then click another button to continue to the section in the movie where they need to go for the Software Demonstration.
Any Ideas on how to get it to stop???   I thought i had it working yesterday but today its not.. Its possible i removed a duplicate Pause or something?
*UPDATE - just went in to check the pause settings.. It PAUSES CORRECTLY if i Click the external Link button Once.. but if i click it again.. it reopens the link and then the demonstration starts playing in the background..
    Please help

  • Linking to another PDF file

Obviously in Acrobat you can setup links to another PDF file. And I understand you can do that in Designer but as I can see, the only way is to do it via a URL/browser. Importing a PDF into Designer doesn't preserve the link. Looked in the documentation but I didn't find anything so far. Is this where one would use subforms? I just want a button to open another PDF file in Reader basically.
    Thanks
    Jzach

The "Open File" action is limited in its ability to actually
kick off external applications. As a rule of thumb it is best used
to redirect the user to HTML documents - and of course, opening any
file can be problematic if the end-user's computer has no valid
"association" to the linked file-type in his/her machine's system
    registry.
For instance, if an AVI file is targeted, it will be a
crap-shoot what application will be used to display it (if any). On
one machine, Windows Media Player might be opened to play the AVI,
and on another, perhaps a DiVX player or maybe even Flash (though
    not likely).
