External Mic

Aloha,
What im trying to do is record oral interviews from my laptop. I wanted to get better reach than the internal mic (some interviews are hard enough to get without repeatedly asking the subject to speak up) so i bought a sony condenser mic. (50$, im not looking for superb quality audio just transcribable interviews) Didnt work and then read that the mac-book doesnt support external mics that dont have their own power source. Ive looked quite a bit but am confused. Was using QT Pro to record the audio. Any ideas? mahalo, ron

If the level is low, make sure that the selector switch on the iMic is set appropriately. Particularly on the older unit it's counterintuitive; the switch setting for microphone level is away from the mic input on the iMic.
Note that the Mac as it ships doesn't pass through audio from the microphone or line input directly to the speakers, so if you're expecting that to happen, it won't. You'll see input level in your recording application but won't hear anything. If you want to hear an audio passthrough, try LineIn.
Hope this helps.

  • IPhone 6 External Mic not working for Siri/Dictation

I am finding that the external mic on my iPhone 6 works for phone calls and voice memos, but does not work for Siri/Dictation.  When I plug in the earbuds, they work for everything (including Siri/Dictation).
Was chatting to Apple support who had me reset all settings.  I thought that worked, but realized that after a reset, Siri is off and I was talking to "Voice control" (which works).  When I turned Siri back on, it does not work.
I have two questions for the community to see if you can help:
1- I have been assuming this must be a software problem since the mic does work for non-Siri access.  But is that true?  Is there a hardware component that Siri depends on which could be faulty here?
2- If it is software, what action should I try to address it?  I have done a reset all settings already and that did not help.

Hi, everyone.  I talked to Apple Genius at Apple Store last week, she said it should be a software issue and I needed to reset my iphone 6 plus as a new device and I can not use the backup restore from my iCloud, it was because the microphone bug or glitch can be in the backup also. Ok, followed her advice, erased all contents and set my iphone as a new device , the microphone worked for an hour, but went bad again.  I used "voice memo" app from Apple to test the microphone. It is the best tool since it doesn't involve any provider's network and it doesn't need another person's phone to listen and test.  If you can hear your voice recording clearly, then the mic works.  I tested it 3-4 times a day for a few days now, half of the time the mic doesn't work.  So, set as a new device isn't working. The issue is intermittent and it comes and goes as it likes, so very annoying. I carry my Apple EarPods with me in these past few days ust in case I need to make important phone calls.  Will need to go back to Apple Genius this weekend for sure.  Will give update after the weekend.

  • How can I use an external mic to record meeting audio with quicktime player

I'm trying to use a SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic to record meetings at a conference I am running.
I'm using Quicktime for the recordings.
The SoundTech CM-1000 conference mic does not transmit any sound when connected to the Audio-in plug on my MacBook Pro.
Does my MacBook Pro require external mics that are also powered - connected via a usb port rather than, or at least in addition to, the audio-in plug, for instance?
    What's happening here?
    Steve

Macbook Pro does not have a microphone input
    You have two options:
1 buy a USB mic and connect to a USB port
2 buy a small very cheap sound mixer that has 3.5 mic level input and a line level out put
    something like this:

  • Trying to Live Webcast on YouTube using AME and external mic on apple computer

Hi. Im an ADOBE forum newbie Ive tried to flick through the forums to find a solution to this but cant. Basically i am trying to webcast on YouTube via my mac but using an external mic.
I have a macbook AIR. And i recently bought a behringer 302USB mixer to input my audio from the microphone i have to the computer via the USP port.
When i look in the system preferences/sounds, it recognises the USB mixer and it shows that sound is being input by the volume level indicator moving.
However, the microphone isnt recognised as an audio input in adobe media encoder (im presuming this is the same as FLME .. i couldnt find a forum for flash live media encoder) ... it seems to automatically use INTERNAL MIC ...
WHen i decide to try and see if the USB set up works in garage band, it records fine ... same for quickime .. so it seems to pick up sound and record to computer .. what i seem to be struggling to do is direct the sound to the media encoder for it to  record the sound from the USB mic .. as opposed to the internal mic ..
I tried  a little trick by attempting to redirect via SOUNDFLOWER .. then into AME via soundflower ... it recognised soundflower .. but the audio came out silent ... so it once again didnt seem to recognise (or process the audio live ...
I need to use an external mic as my internal mic picks up too much noise .. and the external mix is very directed in what sounds it picks up ...
Does anyone know a fix?? .. this is driving me mad ...
    cheers
    Billy

It's not only the files in the Programs folder which are installed by most Windows applications, but also the files in other folders (e.g. Programdata) as well as the Registry settings, which are required to run an application. Installing an application in a folder, coping it and running it from somewhere else was possible in the good old DOS times.

  • External Mic on MacBook Pro 13 inch

I've tried doing what is recommended in the troubleshooting section, but I still can't get an external mic to work on my MacBook Pro. When I change the settings to 'Use audio port for sound input' nothing new comes up, it stays on 'Internal Microphone' and 'Built-in input'
It would be great if you can help me sort this!

    Mmm.
Assuming you have the microphone actually plugged in when this occurs there is clearly something up, cjday.
While the comments from others about low level inputs and the like might become relevant later (depending on what sort of microphone you are trying to use), you should still see the option change to "Line In / Built in Input" " if you have selected "Use audio port for sound input" and have clicked the "Input" tab in the upper part of the sound preferences window, and have the mic plugged in. In fact if you have these settings it should change to "Line In" regardless of what you actually have plugged in there - even a pair of headphones or a plain 3.5mm plug with no wires attached!
Does the socket work normally in "output" mode? (ie if you plug in a pair of headphones and deselect 'Use audio port for sound input' can you hear anything through them when playing any audio?)
Assuming the plug on the microphone fits properly in the socket (to activate the sensor indicating that there is something actually in it!) the first thing to try in your case might be a PRAM reset.
Another possible issue could involve it being "stuck" on optical input/output, perhaps? No sign of a reddish light emanating from the port?
    Cheers

  • I want to use an external mic, on my DV6. But the on-board mic remains on. How can I switch it off?

On every other piece of kit I've ever used, plugging in an external mic (or headphones for that matter) automatically disables the on-board microphone (either side of the webcam on this notebook).  I have managed to turn off the on-board mic but doing so disables the external mic input too. I'm running Windows 7.
Please help - it's driving me nuts!

  • I'm using the note taking view of Word 2011 for Mac so I can record a meeting as well as take notes. The audio of the internal microphone is so low - can I attach an external mic and have it work with note taking view?

Can I attach an external mic to my Macbook Air to enhance sound input for the note taking view of Word 2011 for Mac? I've tried preferences to up the volume of my sound, but I still cannot hear the recording. Any suggestions? I need to record a meeting as well as take notes so I'd like to use this tool, but the audio is not good enough.

A USB microphone can work with the Air, and I've used them before with my 11" Air.  Griffin also made a product (the iMic) that will add a standard computer microphone port, connecting to your USB port.  It's heyday was the time of the old iBook laptops (which also lacked a microphone in jack) but I think it's still around.
The single sound port on the 2011 models, as I recall, supports iPhone style headphone/microphone but I don't believe it will support a standard microphone input.
The built in microphone sits on the left side of the computer and I suspect wouldn't work well for picking up a lecture unless you were sitting just right in position vs. the speaker (preferably having the speaker positioned to the left and sitting really close).  By design most laptop microphones presume they are going to be mainly used to record a sound coming from the person sitting at the keyboard, while for a lecture you normally would prefer it concentrate on sound coming from behind the screen.

  • Can I use an external mic such as the Tascam iM2 while using FaceTime?

HHi all. I want to improve my audio quality while using FaceTime with a small group. I can't seem to make the Tascam iM2 to work. does FaceTime support external mics? I'm using it on an iPad 2 using iOS 8.

Troy, I beg to disagree.  I've just done a test and find that I can record video from my external USB microphone (A logitech AK5370).  Here is the menu:
I can also select the system (line) input or an input from an app which captures sound from applications

  • I am trying to use an external mic while in Windows 7 through bootcamp.

I have been trying to get an external mic to work on my Macbook Pro while I'm in bootcamp.  Any suggestions?

First, the pad 2 does not have the hotspot feature.  That is on the pad 3.
If you want to print from your pad to a printer you either need an AirPrint printer, or an app to route the print job through your computer, which will not be of any help to you on the road.
I don't think the envy is AirPrint compatible.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
There is an hp app that will let you print to a web address, and that may be what you are trying to do.  If so, you will need a way to get the printer a web connection.   The pad 2 won't, but a hotspot from an I phone, or other smart phone, or a my fi device might.
You can look into those solutions.  Also, take a look at the link below from another thread about printing on the road.
See if there is some application there for you.

How to conect extern mic (Shure sm58)and use it with prologic ?

You could use a small mixer with appropriate cabling, or an actual Audio Interface that's designed for what you want to do. The SM58 is a low impedance Mic and needs a mixer or audio interface.

  • 3G crashing every week.  I lose the external mic

Thanks for taking time to read this
My first 3G iphone was great, it worked wonderfully till 18 months, then the home button wore out. I have received 2 replacements since that time and both of them of them lose the external mic for the telephone. It worked up till the phone tried to upload new mail or syn via wireless then it wouldnt work. I end up having to use a plug in mic in the headset port to use the phone. Anyone have any ideas? I use a iMac at home. Thanks for your time
    Tony

Sure that NTFS 3G system that allows you to write Windows NTFS formatted drives is broken or corrupted something and is stopping you from reading either Windows or Mac formatted drives.
Try uninstalling that 3G program and Reboot and see what happens.
