External Microphone Recommendations For Canon Vixia HF M50

Hello:
I have reviewed the microphone options for the mini-advanced shoe, and they don't work for my application.  I need an external condenser microphone that can be on a wire 50 feet away from the camera.  I tried a dynamic microphone but voices were much too soft.
Does anyone have a recommendation on what will work on a 50 foot wire, but provide good sound from an external microphone?
Regards,
Rich Locus

Nevermind, I got tired of waiting for some help and found one that will work perfect for what I need at campbell cameras..
Pretty neat wrap around alum. mount that will work perfect..

What is the Highest Quality Recording Setting for Canon Vixia HF R500?
    Is it AVCHD 60P 28 Mbps or MP4 60P 35 Mbps?
Does the higher bit rate of the MP4 format mean that it is a higher quality recording or not?

    Hi Greg_Jay!
    Thank you for posting.
The highest quality is MP4 60P 35 Mbps.  Generally speaking, the higher the bit rate, the better the quality.

  • Camcorder external microphone recommendations?

I'm shooting video with a little Canon Elura 100 mini-DV camcorder, which has a jack for an external microphone. I'd like to interview people and capture their voices up close better than the built-in mike is doing from a few to several feet away.
Maybe a wireless lapel mike or something of that sort would be the best way to go, although if those are too expensive I wouldn't mind hanging a mike on a stick connected to the camera by a long wire. I know next to nothing about microphones so don't know what to look for.
Anyone have any recommendations on where to get a good external microphone that would serve this purpose?
    Thanks,
    Tom

I guess you were right, Ian; a little wired lavalier mic turned out to work just fine. I bought this little Audio Technica one <http://tinyurl.com/ywo6av> for just $20 and the recorded sound is amazingly good--although it's almost too sensitive if you get it too near your mouth, so it works best held out a ways or clipped to your shirt front. The wire eliminates all the problems I was reading about with wireless mics. There is still the battery to worry about so I'll get some spares to keep handy.
I still wish I could figure out how to power the fancy old stereo shotgun mic off my ancient Hi-8 Canon L-1 to use on the little Elura videocam for outdoor recording. It plugs right into the Elura's mic jack, but it has a second wire that plugs into the L-1 for power. The Elura has no second jack, so the mic would need some sort of external battery, maybe like those on the Rode mics you other fellows mentioned. Perhaps one of the local electronic stores can figure out what kind of power it needs. This old L-1 mic, being stereo and with its adjustable angle of sensitivity, is actually fancier than this Rode stereo mic that looks similar to it and costs $250 on Amazon <http://tinyurl.com/23qw63>. There is also the cheaper Rode mono mic <http://tinyurl.com/yqalew>, which takes a 9V battery inside. Maybe the old L-1 mic would work with a 9v like that.
Anyway, at least I'm all set now with this lavalier mic for indoor voice recording. You were right about the improved quality of an external microphone. My daughter even played a banjo into this lavalier mic and the recorded music and her voice sound very realistic, even heard through the cheap external Altec speakers connected to this Mac. This little Audio Technica lavalier mic has top user ratings on Amazon, but only four people reviewed it (maybe it's a new product) so I still had reservations after ordering it. But it turned out very well.
The mono sound is a minor drawback, but at least I can copy and paste the single audio track onto a second audio track in Final Cut to get the sound to come out of two speakers.
Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

  • Best setting for Canon VIXIA HF R21 for YouTube

I am looking for the best or most optimal setting for shooting video with my Canon VIXIA HF R21 camera.
I am using a MacBook Pro laptop and Adobe Premiere Elements 10.
My goal is to produce the best quality videos for a "YouTube" channel. The videos will be for a teenage car show shot outdoors and narrated.
    The current DEFAULT settings are:
    Recording Mode = SP, 1440x1080
    Bitrate = 7Mbps
    Codec = MPEG4-AVC/H.264
    Frame Rate = 60i
    Digital Image stabilization = standard
Here are possible "alternative selections" - please let me know if any of these settings are better than the Default settings for YouTube.
    Change Recording Mode to
    1. MXP = 1920x1080 @ 24Mbps
    2. FXP = 1920x1080 @ 17Mbps
    3. XP+ = 1440x1080 @ 12 Mbps
    Change Frame Rate to
    1. PF30
    Digital image stabilization
    1. Dynamic
    2. Standard
    3. Off
I will use Adobe Premiere Elemebnts 10 to upload the final edited video - what setting are the best upload compression settings if I want to upload for the ebst quality?

BillFlorida, I'm not sure what you're not getting here. Have you tried any of the things we've suggested?
There are two settings you need to worry about. One is your PROJECT setting. That must match your original footage, as I've indicated. If it doesn't, you're going to get poor performance and video quality.
The second setting is your OUTPUT setting. That's the only setting YouTube is interested in. If you use the output settings I linked you to above -- working from a project that's been set up properly -- you will get excellent YouTube results.
    Try it. You'll see.
You'll also see, if you experiment a bit, that there's virtually no difference in the quality of FXP and MXP -- especially if you're going to display your video online. The important thing is that your PROJECT settings match that 1920x1080 AVCHD footage and that you use the YouTube output settings recommended in the FAQs.
    Try it. You will see.

  • FCE HD Easy Setup for Canon Vixia HFS21?

Dear ones, I have FCE HD v 3.5.1 installed on Powerbook G4 Mac OSX 10.4.11
Is FCE HD v 3.5.1 compatible with Canon HD Vixia HFS21?
If so, what is the appropriate Easy Setup for Canon HD Vixia HFS21?    Thxs kindly!
Do I need an Intel based laptop to use this Canon Vixia HD HFS21?  I believe my Powerbook G4 is not Intel based! Or is it?
    Thanks kindly!
    Nestor

    Bad news:
I'm pretty sure this Canon shoots AVCHD video for which you need both FCE4 and an Intel Mac to edit.  (Your G4 was the next-to-last of the Motorola processors before Apple switched to Intel chips.)

  • What is the premiere sequence preset for canon vixia hf r400?

Yes that is the correct sequence setting.

  • External Storage recommended for use with FCPX

    Hi everyone,
I want to improve FCPX performance and work with my events and projects on one or two external HDDs.
I am an amateur editor and mostly work with    720p, 120 fps, h.264 optimized to ProRes 422 footage on mostly single camera projects.
Can anyone recommend a portable product that will work for my purposes?  Preferably one that I don't have to spend $1000+ on (like drobo or promise).
Is an external USB3 Drive powerful enough? Do I need thunderbolt?
Thanks so much for your answers and help!
    Mike
    P.s. Working with a MBP 15" Retina, 2,6 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 750GB SSD.

120fps?  What camera did this media come from?
FW800 minimum, Thunderbolt is best.  You're budget will determine your limits.  Will USB 3.0 be enough?  It all depends on what format you're editing.  If you transcode everything to ProRes, just about anything will work. Firewire 800 will work, unless you're doing a lot of compositing and/or very long projects.
Get the format you can afford.  Be sure spinning disk drives (your price range) are 7200rpm!  Vital!
Minimum would be FW800, next up would be USB 3.0, next up would be Thunderbolt, as far as speed.  Avoid SSD drives as you'll not get much storage space for the amount you sound like you have to spend.

  • External HD recommendations for a B&W G3

I use a PowerMac G3 400 MHz running OS 9.2.2 to record and mix audio with Pro Tools LE using a Digi 001 interface. I currently store all of my audio files on a 120GB Glyph X-Project FireWire external HD, which is now nearing capacity.
I’d like to add a second FireWire external HD to my set-up. The Glyph X-Project series has been out of production for several years now, so I’m looking for another drive that will hopefully be compatible with Pro Tools (Digidesign’s specifications call for a FireWire 400 drive operating at 7200 RPM using the Oxford 911 chip set).
Understanding the 128GB limitation inherent to Rev. 2 G3s, can anyone recommend an external FireWire drive that might work in this steup? I’m willing to take the risk that the drive might not be 100 percent compatible with Pro Tools, in which case I’d simply use the drive for secondary storage, keeping the Glyph X-Project drive as my primary Pro Tools drive.
    Thanks for your assistance.

Hi, I think the 128GB Limit only applies to the IDE/ATA drives, not Firewire Drives, just not 100% certain on that.
You can add your own IDE/ATA drive to this enclosure...

Or a newer case & 500 GB SATA drive...

    They use Oxford chipsets.

  • Microphone recommendations for recording into Captivate 4?

Hello. Can you tell me what microphone you use to record directly into Captivate 4 (on Windows XP) that works properly and plays back as it should? I am having audio issues with C4 using a Rode Podcaster. I know it's not the microphone as it works with other applications. I know it is something with C4 and I have tried several workarounds to no avail (such as the one found http://bdld.blogspot.com/2009/03/fixing-sound-in-adobe-captivate.html[L=Link). If you have a microphone you've used with C4 that works, please reply to this post as I would like to see if I will have success with a different mic. Please do not respond here if you have an audio workaround, a .dll fix, or anything else to troubleshoot audio.
    Thanks,
    Casey

    Hi Casey
I use a Microsft LifeChat headset microphone and it seems to work well.
However, I will also toss out a note about something I encountered a few weeks ago in a Captivate class. We were using Intel based Macintosh PCs. Captivate seemed to refuse to record until we first clicked Audio > Settings and specifically yselected the microphone.
Probably won't be that easy in your case but thought I'd mention it. Who knows?
    Cheers... Rick

  • External Drive Recommendations for iMovie '09 and iMac Intel Core Duo

I just got a new iMac Intel Core Duo, and loading up on 4 gig of Ram. Going to get an external drive to house video footage, and wondering if this model might be ok. I understand firewire is usually better than usb drives, but am looking at one that is USB 2.0 with of speeds up to 480 Mbps and transfer rates up to 1.5 Gbps. Claims it's almost twice as fast as FireWire 800.
Would this work well for iMovie, editing HD footage?

  • Very low external microphone level for podcast?

I'm using GB '09, v.5.1, on a MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo running OS 10.6.4.
I want to start podcasting, but the level on my microphone is extremely low. It's a Sony ECM-MS907, a battery-powered mic with a miniplug connector.
When I test it, the levels are barely visible in the editor, and that's holding the mic up to my mouth. From six inches way, my recorded voice is barely audible.
Inside GB, I try to set the input source to Line In, but I never get that option on the Input Source pulldown menu, so I use Stereo 1/2 (Built-in Input). I've tried forcing the option through Preferences to Line In. That doesn't seem to influence the GB settings.
Any thoughts? I have Input Volume at max in Preferences and Recording Level at max in GB, but nothing seems to make the recorded level anywhere near as loud as, say, the effects samples. Thanks for your help.

it's often hard to get a consensus on anything, but my opinion is that it's a mixture of comfort-level, flexibility, and quality.
    • i've heard lots of good things about the Snowball, and it's simple
    • a mixer and good mic would offer greater flexibility for recording different things while adding a level of complexity (if you're not familiar with using consoles, etc) and possibly lowering quality if you use cheap gear.
a lot depends on what you want to do, and what you expect from your final product.
and after saying all that, i remembered that you're talking about strictly voice for a podcast. i think for the simplicity alone i might lean toward the USB mic, it would provide excellent quality for podcasting, and not put more things in your signal chain to deal with when recording.

  • Canon 6D External microphone hiss

When I attached a Sennheiser MKE400 external Shotgun Microphone designed for noise reduction and DSLR video use, I get a lot of hiss both in Manual and Auto Audio settings on the camera.
I plug the smae microphone in to my Zoom H4N external recorder and it's fine, so something is going on with the Canon 6D I feel but I can't find anyything to fix this, any ideas?

So what has been your experience of using external microphones with the Canon 6D, are you getting hiss too?

  • External Microphone won't work!

I had recently JUST bought a headset.
I was excited to use it... I was positive that it was Mac compatible cause it said that it was ipod compatible.. my mistake I guess. Plus I needed to buy a mic under $30 cause that's all I had... and the cheapest one they had was the one I have on now.
Sooo I get it all ready.
There are 2 plug ins. One for the audio head phones... then one for the mic.
Oddly there is NO hole for a mic.. since mac already has a built in mic.. but i hate using that.
Sooo I just plug it into the next available hole.. which looks like this "|>o<|"
    The mic doesn't work....
So I go to System Prefrences on my computer and it says:
    +Changing your computer's sound input device+
+You can input sound into your computer using your computer's internal microphone or an external microphone. For example, you may want to use an external microphone to record your voice, or use the internal microphone to give spoken commands to your computer.+
+Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sound.+
+Click Input, and then select the device you want to use for sound coming into your computer.+
    So I do that..
    Here were the choices:
    Internal Microphone- Built In
    Line In- Audio line-in port
    so I click "Line In"
and my mic still doesn't work.
does this mean I have to get a new headset?
The thing is I called the place and it said that this headset IS mac compatible. Soo I dunno what's going on.
My guess that this isn't mac compatible even though the guy said it was...
    Also,
Any good headsets I can get for the mac UNDER $30?

Hanners, Welcome to the discussion area!
This discussion area is for the G3 iMacs which look like this:
It sounds like you do not have a G3 iMac. It sounds like you have a G4 iMac which looks like this:
The iMac you have does NOT have an audio input port. The plug you have attached the microphone to is the output port for the Apple Pro speakers. By doing that you may have damaged your microphone AND the output port for the Apple Pro speakers.
The only way to use a microphone with your iMac is to either get a USB microphone OR use an iMic along with a standard microphone.
