External Midi Plugin and Midi Output Delay

This one is fairly esoteric but has anyone run into the following problem or have a workaround?
I'm trying to incorporate the External midi plugin into my setup so I can use the new midi plugins, but I cannot correctly calibrate my system when using it. My calibration technique invoolves setting delay for each synth to the slowest of the bunch and then compensating for all in the Sync > All Midi Out  > Delay preference. However, when you use the external midi plugin this control has no effect. Running the synths as standard midi does work but then you lose the option of using the new midi plugins.
If verified, does anyone know if this issue will be resolved in an update?
Thanks,
David

Pancenter,
Thanks for replying. I haven't had internet in a couple days and I'm back on now. Time Warner Cable is sometimes unstable around my area.
Logic:
I've been trying different things for the last couple days and nothing works.
I replayed and recorded a 4 bar piano part and made sure that the hits were as close to the grid as possible. It sounded fine on MIDI Recording. But on MIDI Playback Here's what I found: The Midi data is not misplaced, it's right where it should be.  But the actual sound is delayed on playback.
I have a PreSonus Monitoring Station. The outputs of the Motif go straight into the Traveler (In 5-6). The Main outputs on the Traveler go into the PreSonus Monitoring Station as well as my KRK Monitors. I control the volume from the Monitor Station.
Software Monitoring and Independent Monitoring Level are both enabled.
I don't get it...Please help.

The subject line above kind of says it all. I would like to know what type of video out port exists on these two models of MBP's: mid-2006 and mid-2007? In other words, what kind of Apple adapter would I have to buy to use these ports? Mini-DisplayPort, etc.?

Kappy, thank you for your fast reply. But, I am puzzled by it. A standard DVI port is rather Large and has many pins and the crosswise electrical flat pin. Are you saying that this large type of standard DVI port is present and physically fits on the edge of a Mac Book Pro?

  • Varify Plugin and GRM Tool Delay

    Hi all,
I'm from a Pro Tools back ground, but sold my system and I'm using Logic now. I really miss 2 plugins. Varify and the very specific GRM Tools Delay. I can't afford to buy the whole GRM Tools package and Logic doesn't have a Varify
plugin. Are there other plugins out there that I can use to get the same effect. I also have vst to AU adapter, so that's not a problem.

  • External mic inputs and speaker outputs for CP-7937G Conf Phone

Has any tried to connect the Polycom® SoundStation IP Multi-Interface to the Cisco Conference Station CP-7937G Phone, it appears to be the only way to get eextra mic inputs and line level outputs for enhancing conference call?  See attached Quick Start Guide.

Here's where I am on interfacing external mikes, PCs, speakers, etc. with the Cisco 7937. It seems this I/O port is quite a mystery to both Cisco and the manufacturer (Polycom). There are virtually no technical specs for it anywhere on line. So, I bought a variety of cables and connectors and tried exploring. I could never get anything but input into the 7937 to work. I could never get any output from it despite the output symbol next to the port. Here are the input test results:
3 pole 2.5mm to dual stereo 3.5mm breakout cable didn't work at all
4 pole 2.5mm to stereo 3.5mm for input worked only on one pole (red connection). Half volume?
3 pole 2.5mm to stereo 3.5mm for input works only on white connector (louder?)
3 pole 2.5mm to mono 3.5mm for input, works (louder?)
2 pole 2.5mm to stereo 3.5mm for input, works
2 pole 2.5mm to mono 3.5mm for input ,works, and is simplest.
So, if you want to feed an external audio source into the Cisco 7937, almost any type of 2.5mm male connector cable at the 7937 will work
I could never find any mention of successful use online, and could not find an output signal myself, so I suspect the 7937 was just mislabeled.

  • Getting external software to trigger midi notes in a logic project

    Happy new years guys,
I've recently figured out how to use a 3rd party software (e.g. ableton live) to input midi notes into logic.
so i can set up an ES2 in logic, and use the software (ableton) as the source of midi info. great.
however, when i press the "spacebar" (i.e. play) to kick off my logic project, ableton is not playing as well.
ableton would play synced if logic was opened 1st, and ableton was the re-wire slave. but in re-wire slave mode, ableton has no midi outs !!
so on the 1 hand, i can open ableton 1st, then logic - which would give me the ability to use midi events in ableton to trigger ES2, but then I can't sync the playback of logic + ableton.
on the 2nd hand, i can open logic 1st, then ableton - which would let me press spacebar in logic, and ableton would then run synced as the slave. but this way, ableton has no midi outs, as its runnin in re-wire slave mode !!
what i really want to do is just use ableton as the midi sequencer / trigger, and use logic for everything else (mixing, effects, ES2 synth, ESM etc.)
i just want to use ableton to edit / create my midi info etc.
anybody have suggestions on how I can achieve this?
i appreciate your time / responses. this forum has been a great help for me.
    ian

There's a couple of things to try...
If you're only using Ableton as the MIDI sequencer...
See if Ableton has the ability to sync to "MIDI Clock" and MIDI Song Pointer if possible.
Go into Logic's synchronization and enable MIDI Clock Out.
I don't know if the current IAC bus will do ot if you have to crteate a second.
The second way would invlove MTC (Midi Time Code) over a second IAC bus.

  • Alignment of external MIDI events and audio

    Hi,
I've been doing some careful measurements of the timing of MIDI events under Logic 8.0.2. I record a lot of external MIDI hardware, so the timing of external MIDI events and its relation to recorded audio is very important to me.
My setup is OS X 10.5.5, Logic 8.0.2., all relevant patches and updates. I'm using an RME fireface 800 as both the audio and MIDI interface in these examples.
I've created a project in which there is no plug-in of any kind: neither instrument nor effect. Even the klopgeist is gone.
    My preferences settings:
    Audio/Devices:
    buffer=1024 samples
    sw monitoring=off
    indep mon level=off
    I/O safety buffer=off
    Audio/General:
PDC=Off (I also measured with PDC=all, to verify that it has no effect)
    low latency mode=off
I create an external MIDI track of quantized whole notes: C3, playing on the first tick of each bar. BPM is 120.
I then create another external MIDI track, cable MIDI OUT to MIDI IN on the Fireface, and record the first MIDI track onto the second (i.e., loopback test). The note data is right on the money; within one tick of the original values. I set PDC to all, repeat the test, same result.
I then cable MIDI out on the Fireface to a hardware synth, and call up a patch with a sharp attack. I route the audio output of the synth to an audio input of the Fireface. I create an audio track with this input selected, and record the output of the synth. The recorded audio is early by 20ms or so -- roughly equivalent to the buffer size.
I repeat the test with PDC set to All, same result. PDC has no effect, as you would expect, as there are no plug-ins in this project.
I then set Preferences/MIDI/Sync/All MIDI Output delay to 21ms. I repeat the audio recording test, and now the recorded events are on the money.
Here are my questions. First, am I doing something wrong, or does Logic have a fundamental bug concerning the linkage between MIDI timing and audio timing?
It seems clear to me that this timing error has nothing to do with PDC. There is no "P". Right?
I thought that the RME has timestamped MIDI. The RME manual speaks of very accurate MIDI timing, and I can verify that the MIDI jitter of the Fireface is indeed low, in the 1ms neighborhood. This is borne out by the MIDI loopback test I did above. But MIDI timestamps don't mean anything if they are not correlated to the time code of the audio, haha! What am I missing here?
If timestamping the MIDI data can't work for some reason, could this problem not be solved by having Logic automatically delay the transmission of external MIDI data by an amount equal to the audio buffer size? Put differently, my solution to this problem is to set a MIDI output delay in preferences equal to the audio buffer size, i.e., 21.3ms. And this seems to work. Is that a proper solution, and if so, why does Logic not do such a thing automatically?
    Thanks,
    -Luddy

OK, so I just retested and here is the best part... I recorded a loop from my drum machine, cut the first note nicely to the 1 on the first bar... using a count in etc.
I played it back and looped outs 3-4 back into 1-2 on my Ensemble. I also played back the same kick on my drum machine just to check this reverse latency issue. I was not concerned with hit for hit layering accuracy. What I got back astounds me!
The "loopback" recording was spot on to the original being played out... totally locked. BUT, the one that was midi clocked by Logic and play from my drum machine came in ahead of the 1??? How is this possible when I am hearing it when monitoring this recording and it is slightly behind? RIDICULOUS! What does this mean?
Logic is NOT recording what I am hearing, but rather recording some timewarped version of it in which it places events ahead of when they happened, but ONLY on midi clocked or midi sent notes!
I have lurked here a long time and I know that there is not much known here about this issue, so before anyone tells me the typical solution I will say as I did in my last post:
I have done a ton of tests like this, I also followed the loopback testing as described on Logicprohelp.com.
Yes I tried it with all PDC modes, SW monitoring on AND off.
I am truly beginning to think that this is a major bug of some sort.
Anyone else out there with hardware that reports latency to Logic (RME, Metric Halo, and Apogee stuff are ones I know that do this) experiencing this abberation?
    thanks

is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

A Fusion Drive is not a RAID; it's a CoreStorage logical volume group. While it's technically possible to do as you suggest, there would be little or no benefit from it.

  • Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device.

Sometimes, while playing back my software instrument songs, I get an intermittent pop-up error message, saying "Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device."
(Sometimes the five digit number is different, but remains a five-digit number beginning with "4".)
Simultaneously, the song stops until I press the "Okay" button in the pop-up window.
When I continue to play the song, the sound is jerky and clipped, and the playhead doesn't keep up with the song, and then suddenly jumps to the part of the song currently being played.
There's also a sound of static.
The issue seems to occur whether or not I have my MIDI controller turned on and plugged into my desktop Imac.

  • ITunes and Audio Midi settings for digital output sampling frequency

Most of my music is sampled at the CD standard of 44.1 kHz, but some is 48 kHz.
I have Audio Midi set to output 48 kHz with 24-bit depth.
I've been told that to avoid having iTunes up-sample when playing 44.1 kHz music, that I need to quit iTunes, manually reset the setting in Audio Midi to the lower, matching, number, and then re-start iTunes.
This strikes me as odd. Is it true? If so, is there any less cumbersome way to deal with this?

Wheat I agree entirely with your last sentiments.
I had a similar problem to 'Luckydog'.
I have a Roland HP3 digital piano which itself is a standalone musical instrument (synthesiser if you like) but also has midi in/out and audio in/out.
I made the mistake of connecting my Mac PBG4/GB2 setup to my HP3 via the Edirol UM2 USB interface, expecting to hear my piano's sounds recorded in GB2. Of course GB2 did not record anything when I selected real instrument track beacuse the Roland, I think, was sending audio not midi data to GB2. What I have since realised is that to record a real instrument whether it be a digital piano (or acoustic piano via microphone) is to set the GB2 input to audio and feed the signal from the Roland via its audio outputs to my Mac via audio interface. (I have a USB Grifin iMic).
Of course I could use the Roland purely as a midi controler and select a software instrument track in GB2, but I also have a Radium 49 simple midi controller keyboard for that.
One thing that does puzzle me though is, that if I hook up my Roland via the UM2 to a WindowsXP laptop running an app. called Cakewalk Music Creator, the Roland sounds are recorded in the timeline and can be viewed, edited and printed as conventional music scores(great for composers!!) Also the Roland track recorded in CMC can be played back through the Roland's on-board sound generator.
In this scenario there is no audio feed between the Roland and the PC only two way midi via the UM2 USB/midi interface.
This is seems to be a fundamental difference between GB2 and the Cakewalk product. Can you explain what's going on hear Wheat?.
Sorrry such a long post !!

  • Mixing Wave and MIDI output for recording - Windows Record Control limitatio

I am using a SoundBlaster Li've! card with Magix MIDI Studio 2005. When I create a score that combines MIDI tracks with Wave tracks, I cannot record the combined audio stream using an internal recording program like Magix Audio Studio. It all sounds fine over the speakers, but I cannot record what I am hearing.
MIDI Studio and Audio Studio are not aware of each other directly - they appear to use the Windows Play Control and Record Control to set which channel should be used to provide audio to the recording program.
Unfortunately, Windows Record Control does not allow more than one channel to be used as the recording source. If I select MIDI, then Wave is deselected. If I select Wave then MIDI is deselected. I can record each separately, but I cannot sync them, since they don't send SMPTE or anything other than audio across the channel.
Is this reflecting a limitation of the sound card or is there some utility I need to use to override the Windows Record Control? Or is there some program or some hardware feature I need to make sure that the audio output from MIDI and from the Wave source are mixed down to the Wave recording channel?
I have already seen some recommendations to patch the audio out of the sound card to the line in. I am not interested in a solution such as this, since two conversions between digital and analog are bound to degrade the result significantly.
If I need a higher level sound, that's fine, just point me to the right one.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Solution for "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI" and "System Overload" messages

Article for those who hate Logic error windows
Seen in Logic Pro 9.1.7 on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
and Logic Pro 9.0.0 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5
    Logic Pro:
    System Overload.
The audio engine was not able to process all required data in time.
    (-10011)
Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI.
    Sample Rate xxxxx recognized.
Check conflict between Logic Pro and external device.
The search in the help given as follows: overload occurs when you use a lot of tracks and a lot of effects on them, and the synchronization is lost when the selected MIDI track for recording or playback. Yes, this is all that is written in the resources. And here are useful tips that have been found:
The Bounce function allows the entire instrument track to be recorded as an audio file. This bounced audio file can then be used (as an audio region) on a standard audio track, allowing you to reassign the available processing power for further software instrument tracks. For more details, see "Bouncing Your Project."
You can also make use of the Freeze function to capture the output of a software instrument track, again saving processing power. For details, see "Freezing Tracks in the Arrange Area."
These tips - about the timing. About overload - there are no tips, except as "reducing the number of plug-ins" and "increasing latency". Zero useful tips - I got two errors in the test project with a blank audio track with no effects, MIDI drums and standard synthesizer, it was no aux buses, and the entire project was only a single plugin in the master track.
Here is the configuration of my computer:
    iMac12, 2
CPU: Intel Core i5 3,1 GHz
    Memory: 4 GB
And here's a project that almost immediately stops Logic, all instruments and plug-ins with the init-patch, ie not the most demanding settings:
    It's sad.
When this happened the first time, I could start the project only if the empty audio track has been selected, a track specially designed so that you can at least start the project. Then, this problem has evaporated along with the changing conditions of work and I forgot about it until the last case.
I was looking for the cause of the problem in the console and the system monitor for two days, and finally I found that Logic ping to the network frequently. I remembered the exact time of occurrence of the problem, and system logs revealed that the problems began immediately, as soon as I deactivate the service of the Internet.
Solution: enable the Internet, or add a new network service on a computer with no Internet. I just created the Ethernet connection to the ip address 1.0.0.0
    Logic immediately began to sing.

    Hi gabaghoul
Yes, it worked for me on four different OS and Logic versions (10.6 - 10.8 and 9.0 - 9.1.6)
It does not work in some cases, hard enough to tell in which one, but you can try, it very easy: go to the net settings and create new Ethernet connection to the ip address 1.0.0.0 and connect LAN cable to the port.
Also you can try to figure out what happens in your system while Logic error occured - fot that you just start Console and search "logicpro"
Pay attention to repetitive events in a console and events with suitable timing, not so far from error
The problem may be related to the GUI or system memory, sometimes turning off Safari (or Chrome, others browsers) might help.
