External Moniter Won't let my Powerbook Shutdown

i have a 15-inch 1.67 GHz powerbook. 1.5GB of RAM, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700: 128 VRAM and an 80GB HD. I'm running 10.4.6 and am up to date on all of my software updates. My problem is that i plugged in an older Sony flat-screen monitor using the DVI-VGA adaptor that came with my powerbook. It worked fine until i tried to shutdown my computer. The computer shutdown then re-booted as if i had clicked on the restart button, i tried again no luck. I unplugged the monitor and it shut down. I then booted up again and plugged the monitor in and i couldn't shutdown. I then was able to shut it down by holding down the power-button for several seconds. This worked, however i tried to turn the computer on, and no luck until i unplugged the monitor. If anyone can help me with this that would be great. The only thing i've installed in the last couple days in Garage band Jam pack Symphony Orchestra thats it. If anyone has any idea's they would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak for the PowerBook, but it is probably due to the fact that most computers built recently have the ability to boot from a USB drive. Essentially, the computer sees the shuffle as a USB drive and tries (and fails) to boot from it.
I had the same problem with my USB thumb drive and my computer. Set the BIOS to not try to boot from USB drives and fixed the problem.

Lots of people are having this issue with no real good answers. I hope apple devs are reading the blogs and get us a fix for this quick. I had this problem after upgrading to mavericks, then I did a clean install to mavericks and still have the same issue. I already miss Steve.

  • Trying to move my music to external hd, won't let me.  What is the problem?

I'm trying to move my music to an external hd to back up.  Won't let me do it.  I've tried moving the folder, won't let me.  Help, please!

You don't explain how you're attempting to do it teresa so here are the instructions from Apple:

  • External drive won't mount w/o shutdown/startup

I have about a two year old LaCie Firewire 400 external drive (w/two partitions) that I've run about three hours per week for backups (via SuperDuper). I have retired my old G3 iMac (Panther) and am now running a 3.06 iMac w/Snow Leopard. I am connecting the LaCie to the iMac using a 400/800 adapter. When my iMac is on, and I turn on the drive or plug it into the iMac after the LaCie is on, it will not mount in the Finder, nor is it visible via Disk Utility. (I have "Show External Disks" checked in Finder Prefs.) I can disconnect it or turn it off w/o a warning showing up. Once I tried do do a "Restart" after the drive was on and connected (but not showing in Finder), and the restart locked up at the initial white screen. However, if I shut down the computer, turn on the LaCie, and then start up the computer, the two partitions will mount and they appear to be fully functional. (I haven't attempted to backup to the drive yet.) From reading other threads it appears there may be a problem w/Snow Leopard on this one. Any input?

Power down and disconnect the ext HD. Zap the PRAM as detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 Connect the ext HD and power it up. That should do it.

  • Mail Won't Quit, and won't let me restart/shutdown...

Mail --> Quit Mail gives me no response. Using the red "x" in the upper left corner, removes it from my screen (but of course doesn't close mail). When I click on the Mail icon in my Dock, nothing reappears. I have to do a File --> New Viewer Menu, turn on the toobar, etc. to use Mail.
Mail cancels efforts at Restart and Shutdown of the computer. If I turn off the power, it starts right back where I am now? (Mail version 1.3.11, OS X version 10.3.9)
    Suggestions?

Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this is if you have a .Mac account which will be entered automatic and/or any email account you created as part of the original computer setup assistant when first turning on the computer when new.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
Test if this resolves the problem.

  • .DS_store won't let me move files from one external drive to another

I am trying to move some music files from one external harddrive to another.  They are both connected to my mac mini.
In the "from" harddrive I have a folder with a bunch of music files in it and it also has a new file in it called DS_store. When I open this folder and select all, it naturally selects all of my music files and this DS_store file.  When I try to drag all of this to the "destination" harddrive I open the folder that I want to drag them to which already has some music and it has the DS_store file too, it won't let me drag the files to it   It says something like there is already a DS_store file there.  So I tried deleting that file from each external drive and it just reappears.
If I create an empty folder in the destination drive, I can drag all of the files to it.  The problem is I want the new files to be in the same folder with the older files.
In addition there are a few other ghost type files that have shown up too.
Any suggestions would be welcome.  Thanks.

If you're copying from a FAT-formatted volume, do as below.
    Back up all data.
Select the text on the line below by dragging across it. Don't include the blank space at the end of the line. Only the text should be highlighted.
    dot_clean -m
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Now switch to the Finder and and select the icon of the FAT volume. Drag into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.
Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. Then quit Terminal and try the copy again.

  • I accidentally updated iPhoto on my (now) external hard drive and now it won't let me access any of my photos. What can I do?

I accidentally updated iPhoto on my (now) external hard drive and now it won't let me access any of my photos. What can I do?

So, you have two versions of iphoto? One from the old machine and one from the new?
If so, forget about opening with the older version of iPhoto.
    For the newer version:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I think I know what I did....my external hard drive has been used to back up my PC.  I was trying to back up my iTunes on my Mac.  I forgot that the formats mattered.  Thanks.

  • My computer is authorized but won't let me play movies from external drive

Before the most recent update, I was backing up my movies and music to an external drive to save room on my hard drive. I would then play those movies in QT from the external drive. I didn't import into iTunes bc I wanted to save room. Now, however, it won't let me play those movies unless I import into iTunes. I get a please authorize field. I authorize and it says that this computer is already authorized but it still won't play the movie.

SO FAR THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME!

How to open older version of iPhoto from an external drive. It won't let me open or upgrade to the latest version?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
how is the EHD where the library is located formatted?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

How much is "plenty of storage"? Go to Settings>General>About>Available
The GB size of the download file is the compressed size (like .zip or .dmg). When the file is installed/uncompressed it can be 2-3 times larger.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select Mail, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

    Welcome to Discussions, 67siia
    (0) Because is worked once, you must change the password back to the one that worked initially.
The only alternative is to create a new iD and password and replacing the one that does not work with a fresh activation of FaceTime using the new info. If you need help, see this article:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40
    (1) Test to see whether the problem is the same when your "kids" invite you to FaceTime.
    (2) Does "log in" mean you initiate a FaceTime call?
If so, you should not need to change anything because it worked before.
Try restarting (turning off and back on) your iPod. If you need help, see this article:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
Then test again. If the problem remains, try from another location that offers known FaceTime-friendly wi-fi. Examples include Apple Stores or VARs and Starbucks. If it works for you at other locations but fails at home, restart your modem and router/wireless. If they are separate devices, wait for the modem self-test to finish before starting the next device. Then test again. If restarting does not help, you will need to troubleshoot your wi-fi. If you need help, see this article:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
    (3) If your problem remains, try "Restoring your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a previous backup." If you need help, see this article:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
You might even want to consider restoring your iPod to "new" condition and then starting over on setting up your "new" iPod.
    (4) If everything fails, and if you want to continue to try to resolve this yourself, post back all the new information you found while trying these suggestions. We will try to offer other suggestions based on the details in your reply.
    (5) Alternatively, seek help in person from the "kids" or an Apple retailer.
