External Monitor dims as I bring stuff on screen...

My desktop is bight and crisp.
I open my finder and my monitor goes dimmer.
I drag my finder low as to hide it and my desktop it bright and crisp.
I drag the finder back up and my monitor goes dim..... You get the point.
I just moved from a PBg4 and had no problem with the monitor till I bought the macbook.
Wassup?

This is a monitor based on a CRT, correct? It sounds like the auto beam limiting circuit is triggering. What I don't understand is why it wasn't doing that with the PB G4. Have you gone back and tried the PB again? It could just be coincidence that the monitor started having this problem at the same time you got the MB.

Does the iPad3 support external monitors, allowing you to scan across two screens?

Some apps, such as Keynote, support different displays on the iPad screen and an external display. The iPad does not span it's "desktop" across screens, though; it only mirrors.

  • Is there a way to have an external monitor dim like the main screen on an iMac?

i have an apple 24 inch external monitor attached to a 27 inch imac. the main screen dims according to the energy saver settings but the external monitor stays bright. there seem to be no settings in the energy saver pane in system settings to control the dim function, any suggestions?

could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.

  • External monitor dims sporadically

I have my Macbook Pro running clamshelled and connected to a 23" LG monitor via HDMI and always running under AC power. Frequently the external monitor will dim briefly and then return to the normal brightness level. It seems to happen most frequently when navigating web pages.
I did not have this problem earlier with OS 1.8 and a different, but identical, LG monitor, although I usually ran non clamshelled with the laptop monitor on.
    Any ideas?

    The stop running it closed.
It may be getting too hot and slowing down and dimming to slow heat generation.

  • 27" iMac Powers Up - Black Display - Able To Use External Monitor

I have a strange problem, but I believe it's a software problem and maybe could get some help here before lugging it over to the apple store for the second time in 3 months.
    - Today when I turned on my 2010 27" iMac it booted up, gave me the start up sound, my external hard drive turned on, fans were going, but the monitor remained off which never happens. The night before I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary like changing settings or installing anything.
    - I tried turning up the brightness on the keyboard and that didn't work.
    - I shined a flashlight into the screen to see if I could see a faint desktop as if the backlight had gone out, but saw nothing.
    - I turned on my external Acer monitor and to my surprise my entire desktop was on that external monitor which I've never seen happen. It's almost like the computer knew the screen was dead and shifted everything over onto that monitor.
    HERE'S WHERE IT GETS WEIRD....
    - I put the computer to sleep. When I went to awake it from sleep I turned on the external monitor and to my surpise the iMac screen turned on as well, but my desktop was still located on the external monitor. It remains on. It doesn't flicker or turn off after 10 minutes, it remains on.
    - I turned off the computer and did an SMC restart which I know is mostly BS for any of the other times I've had problems with the iMac. I figured it would not work and it didn't.
    - I can get the iMac screen to come on, but ONLY after it wakes up from sleep, but it's still situating everything on the external monitor. It's as if the iMac is treating it's own screen as an external monitor.
So it's not that my graphics card is dead or my backlight burned out. It's just a matter of telling the computer to turn on the display.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it!
    - Joe

Tried to Safe Boot, didn't work.
Did one PRAM reset it didn't work. I'll try your suggestion of 3 in a row and see if that works.
I have a temporary solution on how to get the iMac display to work after freak luck:
    1) Turn the computer on from being shut down. iMac display is dead. Ext. monitor works with my desktop on it.
    2) Put the computer to sleep.
    3) Wake the computer up from sleep, but make sure the external monitor is turned off. The iMac's monitor turns on, but the iMacs monitor is treated as an external monitor with nothing on it. I can only slide things over from the external monitor onto the iMac screen.
    4) Restart the computer
    5) Desktop and everything goes back and gets situated on the iMac display.
I can put it to sleep, but once I shut it down I have to start all over again. At this point my guess is a boot up issue. Because after the iMac screen does turn on from sleep and I restart it everything works fine. It's just getting the screen to come on when it boots up from shut down is the problem.
I will most likely be taking the iMac to the Apple Store. In some misplaced, weird way I get a kick out of it because everytime I bring a problem to them, they've never seen such a problem before, so with my luck they've probably never seen this before.
Thanks again for your help BDAqua!

  • I connected an external monitor to my MacBook Pro, but it doesn't open any programs. It Just sits there with a blank screen.  How do I get it to open programs and act like a monitor?

I connected an external monitor to my MacBook Pro, but it doesn't open any programs. It Just sits there with a blank screen.  How do I get it to open programs and act like a monitor?

    Dear Jean:
It sounds like you are trying to get your external monitor to act as the primary viewing screen. For example it would have your Doc, Icons, Etc. In order to make the external monitor the primary screen you have to:
    Open System Preferences.
    Choose the Displays Icon
There will be several tabs to choose from pick Arrangement
Drag the toolbar to desired display
Let me know if this helps at all!

  • 1680 x1050 external monitor on T500 does not work

Dear all, I have a T500 running XP professional and a Philips external monitor 220BW8plus, but when I set the screen resolution to the screen's native resolution my screen gets compressed with 2 black areas on the side. I've tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked. Now I'm forced to work at 1400 by 1050.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Cheers,
    Erik
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for that suggestion, but I've tried that and as soon as I apply that change, the screen gets compressed with big black bars on the side.
It doesn't matter if I switch to single display, dual clone, dual extended, without or with docking station. I've updated to the latest software drivers etc, etc.
Is it a problem of the T500 with this brand and type of screen (Philips 220BW8CS1/00)?
Even our IT department is not able to solve the problem. They suggest I'd buy a different screen

  • 2010 Macbook Pro 17 display on external monitor only after power on

THis has happened a few times over the past 6 weeks - I power on first thing in the morning and the primary screen is black, and the login screen appears on the external monitor. Shutting it down and starting up again does the same thing. When it happened before I'd power off, remove the external display, power on and then I'd get the primary display back agin but it's not working this time and I've only got the external display working.
Is there a utility to 'kick' the graphics into the correct mode, or is this some type of hardware problem?
    Thanks,
    Graham

The primary laptop monitor starts blank, and only the external monitor is working.
If I shutdown, unplug the external monitor and power back on the laptop screen stays blank. If I plug the external monitor in the screen that would normally have been on the primary laptop screen is on the external monitor, and the laptop screen remains blank. At this point I can only work with an external monitor plugged in, and that limits my portability a bit

  • New iMac won't recognize my external monitor.

I just upgraded my workplace computer to a late-2012 iMac (with the thin edges) from the previous older model.
I have an external monitor that I use as a secondary screen - a Samsung SyncMaster BX2440 - that worked great on my older machine using the DVI adapter.
When I plug the same adapter into my newer machine, it won't recongize the external monitor.
I tried resetting the PRAM, but no dice.
Is this a Thunderbolt issue, and if so, how easy is it to resolve? Do I just need to get a newer DVI adapter?

Loner: I looked at that and it only shows the main iMac display. Doesn't show the other device.
The model I'm using is a Thunderbolt machine (has the lightning bolt arrow icon).  The previous machine was a DisplayPort model.
The adapter is the Apple-issued DVI adapter, but I'm guessing that even though TB and DP use the same physical plug interface, the adapters are not compatible?
(The adapter has the standard monitor icons on it - box with vertical lines on either side).

  • New Macbook Pro Retina is pixelated on external monitor

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro Retina Display 13" and when I connect it to my external monitor (Samsung) with a HDMI cable the screen is blurry and pixelated. I have connected my old macbook to this monitor with no problems. I tried adjusting the settings etc and some other tips I found online but nothing has worked. Has anyone else had any luck rectifying this problem?
It's a massive pain as I the monitor is reasonably new and I need it in order to study comfortably.

I have an HP 2311x as well. I'm using an HDMI cable and am not having any issues getting the screen to display. I know you said the cable works with a PC but have you tried a different HDMI cable just in case. It might be worth a try. Other than that, I'm not much help.
The issue I had when plugging this monitor into my MBP retina was that the image was very blurry on the HP 2311x. I almost gave up on using it and was going to just buy a Thunderbolt display but after much research I found a custom firmware update that fixed the underscan/blurriness issue. So be prepared for that if you get the screen to display.
If I can find that resource, I will post it here.
    Good luck!

  • External Monitor not displaying correct resolution.

I just hooked up my Viewsonic 19" widescreen display (1440x900) to my MacBook Pro. Ive closed the lid of my laptop and set the resolution to 1440x900 (60hz) in System Preferences yet the external display is still fuzzy. I looked in the monitors menus and it says its currently displaying 1152x864!!!!
When i tried mirror mode it looks like it thinks the external monitor is a different size but both screens have the same native resolution.
I've tried a bunch of different resolutions but none of them seem to use my monitors native resolution. I'm using the included DVI to VGA adaptor into the monitor. The monitor works fine if I plug it into my old Dell XP Laptop or XP desktop.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same "fuzzy" picture on external LCD attached to MacBook Pro here (2GHz, 2GB RAM, 10.4.11). Been using a mediocre NEC LCD72vx for along time and figured that was the reason, but I tried a stellar ViewSonic VG191b that I use with my Windows desktop for layout and found the same slightly fuzzy picture, despite also noting that the resolution setting was the native one. Note, I use the external display rotated 90, but I saw no change at 0 rotation. Straight DVI on both.
Half of the fun of having DVI out is its usefulness for layout in publishing. Powerful MBP, poor external display quality. I think some sort of fix is indicated here.

  • Satellite U500 - Black edges on external monitor

    Hello,
I have problems with HDMI connection to TV.
At FULL HD resolution is in 42" FULL HD TV about 4 cm black edges all around display.
I tried with 3 different HDMI cables, 2 different FULL HD TV and one LCD screen, but everywhere were black edges. Black edges appears when you start computer (at first Toshiba screen and BIOS too).
With same cables and monitors but other laptop is picture without edges.
When I was tryed with HDMI cable (stl.U500) which have got on the other side DVI output (LCD FULL HD screen) was picture without black edges. With normal VGA - VGA cable is FULL HD picture also without edges.
    Where could be a problem?
System is Windows 7 64bit with latest ATI display driver and latest BIOS (2.20).
    Greetings

    Hi Mathew,
Im not a Satellite U500 owner but I assume there must be something wrong with the settings. I never had any problem with the HDMI connection to my external monitor or TV. Its always working fine.
Anyway, what screen resolution you are using on external monitor? You should use the native screen resolution on external monitor. Then you should be able to use fullscreen mode there.
    Check this!!!

  • External monitor issues with new OS

Since switching to the new OS Lion I can't get my external monitor to work through my Toshiba docking station.  It used to work??

I have to use an external monitor with my macbook pro because the screen stopped working a couple months ago. I think the problem with the screen is just a loose connection for the light source because the computer works fine otherwise.  The repair people in town say that it's a bad logic board which will cost 700 euros to fix so I've been using it closed with the monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad.  I installed 10.9.2 the other day because I had been using 10.6.8 and there was some software I wanted to use but it needed 10.7 or later. I just assumed 10.9 was safe or better than 10.7 or 10.8 and I didn't do any research or even try to buy or DL them because the links on the apple site led me to 10.9 and I just blindly followed.  So NOW when I open the lid to my macbook pro, the menu at the top of the monitor goes gray and the monitor flicks off for a second, and when it comes back all the running applications have vanished from the desktop, (all the open windows) and I can't type, scroll, mouse.  When I close the lid it works ok, but I really like the isight camera and I think the microphone is better than the one on my external camera, so it was nice to still be able to use them.
I chatted with someone at apple for a while and he told me to erase my HD and install it again. He said the problems were because I installed it on top of an old OS and that a fresh install will fix all the problems.  I have an empty partition on my mbp and I'm about to try to install on that drive and see if it makes a difference, but I don't totally trust that guy.  I read the transcript of the chat and he gave me a lot of conflicting info.  Does anyone know if it makes a difference to install os 10.9.2 on a totally blank drive, or will the problems on the other partition corrupt everything else?

  • External Monitor on MBP (Invalid format error)

I searched the forums and couldn't find a similar issue so here goes. I have a late 2008 MBP with Snow Leopard connected to a Vizio(MODEL#VM230XVT)LCD 1080P HDTV. I'm trying to use this in "closed lid" mode and using Apple Bluetooth mouse/KB. Because, I didn't want to buy another HDMI cable I currently have it connected via VGA with Apple adapter (DVI>VGA) and a separate audio cable running to TV I have the Bluetooth settings set to wake the device. when I shut the lid the screen goes black either states "No Signal" or "Invalid Format". I have to disconnect the external monitor in order to see the MBP screen again I have tried using several different types of Resolution without success. I notice under the resolution settings it has a "useable screen size underneath it with certain dimensions" so if I set my MBP to max resolution I believe 1400x900 (guesstimate) and set my HDTV to 1920x1080 I think underneath the resolution box I get the "useable screen dimensions which are usually the laptops screen dimension" not sure if this plays apart in anything just wanted to mention it. The TV will display if I leave the lid open on the MBP and have a resolution that exceeds 1024x768 so I'm not sure why it won't display with lid closed as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Then I'd…
    1) Try reinstalling WoW and try to keep as few preference/game files as you can. Granted you need to keep your character and game play files etc etc so just backup the lot and restore as required.
    2) Contact Blizzard and check their forums and see if they know anything about this.
