External monitor for MBP retina 13 inch

hi,
i am an undergrad student and i bought mbp retina 13 inch in dec'13.
now i want to use an external monitor for my work which is mostly coding and stuff .i dont know much about display monitors and their ports or pins : vga ,dvi or displayport.
please help me with suggestions as which one is better monitor to have and some info about the ports or pins is also needed ( as i already have apple's mini displayport to vga adapter ,which i bought to connect my mac to projector although its done rarely )
i do have a budget for this , its about $ 150 to 200 .

Using a PC laptop as external monitor for MBP

Hi!
I just purchased my first mac. I want to have a dual monitor setup so I can have a bigger workspace when I design graphics on my Macbook Pro.
Can I use my other laptop, which is a Toshiba, as an external monitor? The guy at Radioshack was worried that both the MBP and the PC laptop would try to send output signals and end up frying both video cards.

ScreenRecycler works very well. Contrary to what others have said on these boards, it is possible to use a second laptop as an external display.

You will need a fast network connection between the two machines. Gigabit ethernet would be best, but performance is very good with 100 Mb. I wouldn't try using wireless to connect the machines - too much lag.

No, sorry, you can't. Pre-Thunderbolt iMacs could to this, but with Thunderbolt-equpped iMacs they can only be used as a screen for other Thunderbolt-equipped computers. No company has yet to come up with a converter that works with Thunderbolt Macs. The only way you could get video from a game console into your Mac would be via a video capture device and the inherent lag in such capture would, I think, make most if not all games unplayable.

Hi, I am thinking to buy an external monitor for my Macbook. Can anybody suggest me what should be the right size monitor for my laptop? What other properties should I consider? I want a smooth display like my Macbook.

I use the Hanns-G 22" widescreen monitor with the mini-dvi -> VGA. It looks pretty good as an external monitor, not great, but pretty good.
The upside to this monitor, besides being totally huge and satisfying, is that it comes with HDMI input. So we got a DVD player with HDMI and now we have upconverted 1080p movies for $400 total investment, plus a nice external monitor that works perfectly with both macbook and macbook pro.
The Samsung will be a nicer monitor, but $200 for a 22" with HDMI was too good to pass up.

External monitor for Retina Macbook Pro

Hello,i want to buy an external monitor for my late 2013 rMBP.I tried two models (Dell U2414H and LG 23MPQ65-P),none of them worked perfectly.On both monitors colors were washed, without contrast, the font was blurry.So i decided to return the monitors and also I sent the laptop in service for several diagnoses to see if there's something wrong with my Macbook.
I see that there are many models of external monitors that do not work correctly with rMBP.
I want an 23-27", FullHD, IPS monitor that would cost around 400$.
Can you tell me some suggestions?

External monitor for 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13"?

I'm going to get a 13" Macbook Pro Retina 2013 model soon, and I was wondering if anybody knew of any good external displays that are under $300 I could use with the laptop? Preferably in the $100-200 range. I've been doing a little research, and it seems that a lot of people have problems with blurry text while using an external monitor with the retina macbook? I don't know much about external monitors, so I'd also like to know about the ports/adaptors I should use.

Recommend anti-glare LCD monitor for MBP 13

Hello, I need a decent quality antiglare type monitor to be the external monitor for graphics work with my MacBook Pro 13 inch unibody. I just tried an HP ZR24w but was not able to get it working. The monitor would light up for one second and my desktop showed, then it would immediately go dark. Apple support could not help, HP support kept me on hold for 45 min. and then dropped my call.
Unfortunately Apple no longer makes antiglare monitors for its graphics professional community. If they did I would buy an Apple monitor. I am currently using an old Apple Cinema Display but it has a bad case of creeping screen defects and looks terrible.
Is anyone out there sucessfully using an external monitor with MBP that has an antiglare screen, does 1920 x 1200 res and has an IPS LCD?
The usual suspects that people recommend for graphics work in the mid-range are Dell ultra-sharp and HP LP2475w. Since I do less graphics work than I used to I thought the ZR24w would be a good affordable option, however since I could not get it to work I am concerned that none of these other monitors will be compatible either. Buying and returning vis mail order is expensive... would really appreciate hearing what other people are using.
Please let me know what connector you are using. I tried the ZR24w with both DVI and displayPort but neither of these options work for me. Apple tech support was stumped and blamed it on HP.
Any thoughts?

There should be a anti-glare option on ALL Mac's, however the 13" is certainly the next prime candidate for one given that they rolled out anti-glare for the 17" first, then the 15" next.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

I need a good monitor for the retina macbook pro

What is a good monitor for the retina macbook pro. Im looking for 27 inch that is around the price of the thunderbolt display. The only thing putting me off the thunderbolt display is that i wouldnt be able to watch stuff on my xbox on it due to no hdmi.
Im going to university so it would be useful to be able to watch tv and play games on the monitor too but Im more interested in a monitor that will work great on the rmbp and on photoshop. I need to be able to calibrate it perfectly.

Be very careful what you buy, and if at all possible test it with the computer before you buy it. A few times. These things just stop detecting external monitors for no reason sometimes, as well as just refusing to ever detect certain monitors.
Maybe someone here has a set-up that's working for them, that's your safest option.

Yes, it's possible to run an external monitor — all MBPs can do that. You can use any monitor and almost any widely available USB or Bluetooth mouse or trackpad, though I highly recommend Apple's own Magic Trackpad.

External monitor for MacBook 4,1

I understand that I can run a 1920 x 1080 monitor via my machine.
However, I don't know the upper size of monitor that goes to.
I have plugged it into a 40" screen, and the image was not sharp.
I plugged it into a 23" screen, and the image was sharp.
I am wanting to know the largest screen I can run, and still have a sharp image

The inch dimensions of the screen don't matter. The pixel dimensions, 1920 x 1080, can be sharp enough depending on the viewing distance. What matters is if the number of pixels and screen size are properly coordinated with the viewing distance.
On a 23" diagonal screen, 1920 x 1080 is about 96 ppi. On a 40" screen, 1920 x 1080 is about 48 ppi, or about half the resolution. The 40 inch screen should look half as sharp as the 23 inch screen, because the same number of pixels (1920 x 1080) is being spread over twice the area.
If the 23 inch is a desktop monitor, it is meant to be viewed at about desk distance, or about 2 feet. If the 40 inch is a TV, it is meant to be viewed at sofa distance, or about 10-12 feet. If you are viewing a 40-inch TV only a couple feet away, it will seem unsharp because it is not intended to be seen so close. At a normal TV viewing distance, 1920 x 1080 at 10 feet should look sharp enough.
If you want the 40 inch to be as sharp as the 23 inch than the 40 inch must display more pixels. That's why 4K screens are becoming popular. But the MacBook is at its limit already.
The reason I originally said the inch dimensions don't matter is that a screen of any screen will look sharp at its intended distance. Your MacBook could drive a 100-foot screen at a stadium at 1920 x 1080 pixels and it would look sharp enough, from the seats. If you're 2 feet from that stadium screen every dot will look coarse and huge, but that's not how close you're supposed to view it.

Best external monitor for text editing

Hi all - I have a 2011 MBP and want to connect it to an external monitor (+ mouse and keyboard) for text editing and web browsing. Text clarity is very important to me. First I've tried to connect a mainstream Acer monitor, and then Lenovo ThinkVision eIPS LT2452pwc at work, and in both cases Mac fonts looked somewhat "fuzzy" where Windows and Linux fonts looked nice and sharp. In all cases I've used native screen resolution. There is nothing wrong with Laptop either (I tried a couple), and it has probably to do with different antialiasing algorithm that Apple is using, which looks good on higher pixel density laptop panels, but not that great on exteranal monitors.
So... any advice from those using Macs with external monitor for text tasks? Obviously there are Mac displays, but I have some concerns about the glare. Then I heard good feedback about Dell UltraSharp and NEC IPS monitors. Trully appreciate your input for somebody new to Mac.

Yes, I did get Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM. I am happy with it with one caviat (which would be the same for 27 Apple monitor). The picture quality is absolutely amazing - the text is very shart and clear, I can't imagine it to be better. The color is very good and natural, plenty of brigtness and contrast to produce a good picture in any light conditions, plus *no glare* screen surface, arguably making this monitor better than the Apple monitor.
The somewhat unexpected caviat is that since this monitor packs pretty high resolution in a 27" screen, the text appears smaller than on most other monitors (but would be the same as on Apple 27" monitor). It even *appears* smaller than on my 13" Macbook Pro, however at closer examination, that turned out to be not true. The text on the monitor is actually bigger than on laptop, but looks smaller since typically the external monitor is farther away from the eyes than a laptop monitor.
At first I wanted to return the monitor and exchange for smaller and lower DPI (read bigger text) 24" Ultrasharp, but then got used to my 27" monitor and decided to keep it. Hope this helps.

Am about to purchase a new MBP and I believe I will be able to get a new Dell 24" monitor.
question, I have read that many monitors periodically require Firmware upgrade to work at their best.
For instance, there is a new update for the line of Dell monitors in which I am interested,. However, the firmware update (software) is only available in a ".exe" version which is Windows software,.
How do Mac folks upgrade their non -Apple monitors? I know plenty of y'all use third party monitors.
any tips on installing/using a third party monitor with MacBookPro will be will be appreciated, as well.

Lots of posts here assure me that using third party monitors can be done without too much hassled. (I just can't afford the Apple monitors otherwise would purchase)
My concern came from stuff I have read (CNET) and In Dell forums where Dell concedes that the line of monitors I am considering DO have some difficulty with "banding" (Dell was getting numerous troubleshooting calls and exchanging monitors).Apparently the new Firmware, just published, fixes the problem.
I guess I can run the firmware once I have Windows running (Parallels) in my new MacBookPro. And maybe companies will start releasing their software in Mac-usable format now that so many more Macs (especially laptops) are being sold.
