External monitor hooked to laptop keeps going "dark"

The screen on my laptop cracked and so I have hooked it up to an external monitor HP 2009m via VGA.  Laptop is HP Pavillion dv6 with Win7 home premium with all current updates.  After I have been working for about 30 minutes, the monitor keeps going off and I have to hit the power button which usually brings it back, but sometimes I also have to use the source button to cycle back to an active monitor.  The "power lockout" shows up occasionally and sometimes it just refuses to stay on for more than 30 seconds.  I have used the factory reset, have held the power button for 15-30 seconds and unplugged it but it still keeps happening.  I have disabled OSD and sleep and everything else I can think of.  Starting to suspect it is something coming from the laptop, have never seen anything like this and scoured forums for simliar problems/solutions (hence the holding power and factor reset items I have already tried).  I am starting to suspect it might be Netflix, although this seems odd, but it definitely happens more often if I am listening to Netflix in the background.
Anyway, I will reboot and it will be ok for awhile.  Actually, until I start watching netflix again.  Any other ideas?  Driving me insane.  Can I just get the monitor on my laptop fixed replaced?  Thanks in advance for any ideas.

you can check in power option and monitor options too
>> start menu >> control panel >> Power options
you will see the list on the left column and you will find monitor options

My iMac (2007) keeps shutting off when in Full Screen mode (DVD, iTunes Visualizer, etc.) This only happens when I have an external monitor hooked up HDMI. Help?

Try using another connection such as VGA or DVI to see if the problem repeats itself.

  • Wht does my computer screen keeps going dark?

Why does my computer screen keep going dark?

Good. This means that, in your existing account, a setting is bad or .plist file is corrupt. As identifying the rascal may take time, my suggestion is to move data to the new account, must be with administrative privileges. As the contents of each account is unavailable to the other, there are two methods:
    - if you have a backup on an external disk, as you should (if not, consider this seriously, do not count on good behavior of hard disks), make a last backup on the existing account, and restore in the other account; when ready, delete the old (buggy) account
    - if not, save your settings unto a flash drive; this is a limited backup just to avoid putting back settings for Mail etc. I am satisfied with iBackup (grapefruit.ch), but there are other backup utilitites, Time Machine, for example; TM does not allow limited backup, it works if you have a large external disk. If backup disk is not available, move files to shared folder, which is visibile from both accounts, and from there to the new account.
May seem difficult, in fact it is not. You must just move data from one account to another. Now, take care to new apps you install or new functions you activate. When you notice something strange, that may be the cause of this behavior.

  • I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when USB.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.

  • How do I use two external monitors with my laptop?

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

  • I cannot play music from my library on either my external drive or my laptop - keep getting same message "___ song (all of them) could not be used because the original file could not be found. I have tried changing the path in prefernces many times.

I cannot play music from my libray on either my external drive or my laptop. I keep getting the same message - "___ song (all of them) could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I have changed the path several times under preferences and it still won't recognize any songs from either my laptop hard drive or my external drive. I can't play any music at all.

I think I've fixed this on my machine.  If you look in the ITunes folder there is a subfolder called Previous iTunes Libraries.  In my case for some reason this contained the one which had always worked and a new one was in the main  folder.  I closed iTunes, deleted the new one, and moved the old one back to the main folder, then opened iTunes.  It then rebuilt the library and it plays correctly.  Hope it works for you.

  • External monitor losing connection when Windows goes standby

I got an external monitor connected to a MacBook Pro, whenever Windows goes standby the monitor turns off (also goes to standby mode), I can wake up Windows but the monitor remains without connection. I can manually make it work again by going to the NVIDIA screen.
Is there any way to make this work automatically?

    Anybody still want this answered?

  • 2 External Monitors with W520 Laptop?

    I'm running Windows 7 / 64 bit on my Lenovo W520 laptop.
Is there any way to connect two external monitors to the unit and have them show independent screens from Windows?

If I'm reading the link you provided correctly, can I correctly assume that I CAN connect two external displays with just the W520 Laptop and NO docking station?
I tested this today.  You can connect two external displays (1 VGA, 1 DisplayPort) without a docking station.  The result is 3 independent displays - the ThinkPad LCD, the VGA monitor, and the DisplayPort monitor.

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • External monitor with Optimus Laptop (ASUS EeePC 1015PN) does it work?

I am thinking about buying an additional monitor to use as an external display for my EeePC 1015PN. At the moment I use my laptop with a script that deactivates the Nvidia card at booting (not Bumblebee, but basically the same). Now I have read that the HDMI port only works when the Nvidia card is activated, at least in Windows. So I was wondering if it is the same for Linux, anybody here using a system like this?
I guess in the worst case I have to use the VGA port, since I am guessing it is working with the Intel graphics. But I want to be sure before I buy a new monitor and then find out that there is no support for it (yet?).
The only other topic I have found about this was this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=125207
But the topic starter only mentiones VGA and DVI port, which both seem to work, but no HDMI. At least it is an indication that I possibly can use the VGA port with the Intel graphics card.

JonathanArcher wrote:Now I read through the bumblebee article on the wiki and it seems like you can really use the Nvidia card with bumblebee, did I get that right?
    That is correct.
JonathanArcher wrote:So if I manage to get bumblebee running, I should be able to connect a monitor via HDMI?
Unfortunately, no. You see, the way Bumblebee works is it sets up a second X server for the nvidia card and then VirtualGL is used to copy whatever the nvidia card draws there to the first X server which runs on the intel card. While it's possible to configure that second server to use the HDMI output, your mouse and keyboard are bound to the first X server.
Does your machine have a mini-DisplayPort? The asus 1215n does, and it's mini-DisplayPort is connected to the intel card, so one can use that for the external monitor.
JonathanArcher wrote:I am just asking since from my search for a suitable monitor I found out that very few and only older models come with DVI-ports where you can use a VGA to DVI adapter (DVI-I, if I remember correctly).
That doesn't work actually. What works is the other way around - DVI-I output on the card into a VGA monitor. It's because DVI-I can output either an analog VGA or a digital DVI signal. But a VGA output is always only analog, not possible to convert to digital. Not with an adapter. There are converter boxes, but they have their price.
Don't modern monitors have VGA inputs anymore? It's not ideal, but it is a picture.

  • My backlight keeps going dark....

My backlight keeps going off and my screen goes dark. You can still make out all of the features...but everything is really dark. It will just go on and go off. Sometimes when I close my computer and just open it up again, the backlight comes on again. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?

Unchecking "Automatically reduce brightness..." in the Energy Saver Preferences fixed this problem for me.
    Original Symptoms:
Turn on Macbook, screen becomes fully lit through the apple screen, then dims completely when the OS begins to load. The display can be seen slightly using ambient light, but the backlight is completely off.
    Temporary Fix:
The temporary fix was to dim the screen using the function key, then brighten one or two levels. Brightening any more would cause the backlight to go off.
    The Cure:
After unchecking the "Automatically reduce brightness..." boxes (in both Battery and Power Adapter mode), I was able the turn the brightness up completely without any other changes or need for a restart.

  • After 10.9.6 update, laptop keeps going to sleep

After doing the 10.9.6 updates last night, my computer keeps going to sleep, even right in the middle of typing, the screen goes black and the lights on the keyboard go off.  I have to hit a key on the keyboard or tap the touchpad to wake it back up, and re-enter my password.  I am also running os x server installed on this laptop and did that update, along with xcode 6

  • External monitor shuts down laptop

    Hey All,
I've got a weird problem that just came up. I've got a 17" external Apple flat screen monitor that I got off of eBay about 4 months ago. I bought the Apple DVI to ACD display adaptor and have been using the external as a second screen when I'm editing video and authoring DVDs. Everything was great until two nights ago when I plugged it in and all of a sudden it caused my laptop to shut down almost immediately after I connected it to my PowerBook (17" - about 1 year old). I checked it on my older 15" PowerBook and the same thing - shuts down right after plugging it in. I finally checked it on my even older G4 desk top and there were no problems - stayed on and didn't shut down. I've tried just about every variable - plug it in when I boot, plug it in after it's warmed up, charger plugged in - not plugged in, you name it, all of a sudden after 4 months it just stopped working with my laptops. Any suggestions would be grateful as I do alot of editing and the external monitor has made my life much easier because of the added real estate. Thanks in advance-

either you could try different adapter with your monitor - if it does not work, it's the display.
or you could take laptop and adapter to the store and ask them to connect it to different monitor - if it works like that, adapter is probably ok.
