External Monitor - Mirror Only ... OR is Extended Desktop possible ?

If I connect a monitor to my new Intel iMac must it mirror the built-in monitor or can it be set to extend the Desktop ??
I have seen a bit of software called Desktop Spanning or something like that to make extending the desktop accross a second monitor connected to an earlier type of iMac. Will that work or is that necessary with the new iMcs ???

All the intel macs support extended desktop, no hack needed.

  • External Monitor Problem-Only shows Background

First off, I am a new mac user and just got a macbook last week. So far the only problem I have occurs when I try to connect it to my PC's Monitor (yes, I have the adaptor). The problem is only the background appears on the Monitor when I plug it in (ya know, the blue wavy thing). Sometimes I get the mouse cursor, but no desktop or dock. The macbook recognizes that there is an external monitor, but it doesn't do anything about it.
Has anyone had this problem before?

It sounds to me like normal behavior when the system is set for "extended desktop". In that mode, the second monitor shows a completely different screen then the internal monitor; no menu bars or Dock will appear (that's all still on the primary monitor). That way you can drag windows, pallettes, etc. to the second monitor and clear the internal monitor for other uses.
If you want both screens to show the same picture, go to the Arrangement tab in the Displays system preference and check the box that says "mirror displays". You can also in that same screen arrange the monitors so that they correct reflect the physical orientation (if you wish); for instance, setting it so that if the external monitor is on the right, you get to it by moving the cursor off the right edge of the main screen.
    Regards.

  • External monitor revolution only goes up to 1080p

    Hi everyone,
I just get my new monitor Dell U2713hm today, but I am so disappointed that the resolution of the new monitor only goes up to 1080p. The font looks blurry, so I want to adjust it to higher resolution. I have tried to use Dual link + MDP, HDMI + MDP, and MDP to HDMI cable(CONNECT, by Belkin, and it's labelled "4k" on it box). Still, none of them works...
It's so annoying for see blurry things on the screen, please help... Thank you so much!!!
I attach the screen shot to provide more details.
The above picture is showing the profile of my external monitor.

  • Presentation plays in mirror mode but not extended desktop

My presentation plays in mirror mode flawlessly.
But when played in extended desktop has only one life. After 'escaping' out of a playing slideshow, I am then unable to play the slideshow again in extended desktop and must either quit out of Keynote or switch to mirror mode.
My computer is connected with a Sanyo PLC-XU74 data projector at our church. The problem also exists when I test it connected to my Panasonic LCD TV at home.
The problem is not specific to any particular file.
My older version of Keynote 3.0.0 works without this issue on both secondary displays (church & home) but will not play the file created in Keynote 09 (error message 'Keynote cannot open the file .... because it is damaged.')
My wife's MacBook plays the same files without issue in extended desktop mode on the same secondary displays.
Files created in her identical version of Keynote 09 (5.0.1) misbehave when I attempt to play them on my MacBook Pro - just a slightly different error message ... ('Keynote cannot play your slideshow because an error occurred.' )
Again the file will play initially, but when I exit out of the playing presentation there is no way to resurrect it without quitting and restarting the application.
My head is spinning ... should I reinstall iWork 09?

    Kyn (et al)
Thanks for your input. Problem solved with software update to Keynote 5.0.3!!
Seems that the original iteration of Keynote 09 did not like the hardware in my fancy new MacBook Pro. Whereas it was quite content with my wife's older MacBook. It would appear this bug is fixed ...
(Should have done this first - downloaded software update ... that's what you get for being stingy, or living in a remote part of Australia with a dribble of an excuse for broadband internet via satellite!!)
Cheers to everyone who poked their head in ...

  • External Monitor Shows Only Black Screen ??

Recently, my PowerBook G4 12" stopped working properly with my external monitor. My external monitor is a Dell 2005FPW that is connected to my laptop via a mini-DVI adapter, a VGA cable to the VGA port on the 2005FPW. When connected to the laptop, the 2005FPW goes black; otherwise, the monitor shows it's "rest" screen which is a bouncing color bar.
This system has worked without problems for years. I changed nothing in the configuration and (possible red herring) the only "event" prior to the problem developing was that I installed the "Security Update 2008-005 (PowerPC) v 1.0".
I have confirmed that the monitor and VGA cable are working with my wife's laptop.
Today, I replaced the mini-DVI to VGA adapter, and the problem hasn't gone away.
    Any suggestions?
    Michael

Did it develop around the same time, after you downloaded the security update?

  • External monitor works only works when laptop screen displays

Hi there, I just connected a different (newer, but not brand new) external monitor to my T61.  When I toggle screens (fn-f7) the external display gets no signal in the 'external display only' position, but displays beautifully in the 'both' position.  This never happened with my old monitor.  I would like to use the external display and not have the laptop screen display.  Any ideas? Many thanks, Ellen

  • Can't detect external monitor, shows only 640x480

    Hi,
I'm using a Macbook Pro Unibody 13" 2.53GHz to connect to a Dell 2408WFP external monitor. It worked FLAWLESSLY with my old Macbook Pro using a DVI cable.
    1) I first bought the infamous mini-Displayport to DVI adaptor. It didn't work (red static etc. check the page of this product on Apple's store website : you'll see it's a known issue). Cost me 35$
    2) I then bought a mini-Displayport to Displayport cable. Thought it should work perfectly. It DOES NOT. The Macbook is apparently UNABLE TO DETECT my Dell and gives it a default resolution of 640x480. Which is ridiculous knowing that the Dell 2408WFP is capable of displaying 1900x1200.
It's really a pain. Does anyone know about this problem or have an idea how to solve it?
    Thanks,
    P.

    Ok,
It was neither the cable nor the computer (thanks Apple). It was the monitor's EDID profile. Dell's problem.
There's two ways to fix this. 1) It is possible (I did it) to create a custom profile using SwitchResX. You'll need to hook up your computer to the monitor using a working connexion (I used DVI) and then use the "export" function in SwitchResX. It will give you a text file. In it you'll have enough data to fill SwitchResX' form to setup a custom profile. You'll then need to restart the computer, hook it with the Displayport cable and try to use this custom EDID profile. It worked for me.
For example (and hoping it will help others) here are the data you need to setup a custom profile for the Dell 2408WFP :
    Descriptor #0 - Timing definition:
    Mode = 1920 x 1200 @ 59,950Hz
    Pixel Clock............. 154,00 MHz Non-Interlaced
    Horizontal Vertical
    Active.................. 1920 pixels 1200 lines
Front Porch............. 48 pixels 3 lines
Sync Width.............. 32 pixels 6 lines
Back Porch.............. 80 pixels 26 lines
    Blanking................ 160 pixels 35 lines
    Total................... 2080 pixels 1235 lines
Scan Rate............... 74,038 kHz 59,950 Hz
Image Size.............. 519 mm 324 mm
    Border.................. 0 pixels 0 lines
    Sync: Digital separate with
    * Negative vertical polarity
    * Positive horizontal polarity
    2) Of course, you can call Dell and tell them about it. They are sending me a THIRD replacement monitor for this. Be prepared when you call them : I spoke with two representative (and among them a "senior technician") who DIDN'T know what was a Displayport. They even tried to sell me the idea that 640x480 is the native resolution for Displayport. It was hilarious. Really. I got them to look it up on Wikipedia.
    Case solved. Apple 1 - Dell 0.

  • Laggy window performance with external monitor and USB hub after 8.1 -- possible cause found

I have the Yoga 11s which I've been using in conjunction with a Plugable UD-3900 for a few weeks now. Everything has worked very well, especially with external display, keyboard, mouse, and ethernet plugged into the hub.
After upgrading to 8.1 the other day, I began getting very noticeable window and mouse lag on the external monitor. Dragging windows would jump around, aero peek renders were slow, and the 'ribbon' screen saver would pixelate and was slow to wake up.
I installed the updated DisplayLink drivers, and also all the updated Lenovo drivers, but the problem remained. This morning I was trying different ideas and found something very interesting:
The configuration I use when attached to the UD-3900 is to have the keyboard flipped under and the display flipped up in the "stand" so I can use it as a second monitor. Of course when you do that, the Yoga turns off the keyboard & touchpad so they don't get accidentally pressed.
Just for kicks, I decided to flip the keyboard back around and try using the touchpad to move windows around on the extended monitor. Surprise: the laggy window dragging and rendering was gone. And then even more surprising, when going back to the wireless mouse while still in 'laptop' configuration, everything continued to work well -- no lag.
I thought maybe it was an incompatibility with the Logitech wireless USB keyboard/mouse itself, so I disconnected it. However, I also have a bluetooth Microsoft mouse, and it does the exact same thing: With laptop keyboard flipped back & disabled, window drags & aero peek renders lag. As soon as I activate the touchpad, lag is gone, and the BT mouse behaves normally.
So, it seems to be some kind of interaction between the automatic disabling of the Yoga's keyboard/touchpad and any external mouse. Has anyone else seen anything similar? Any ideas on how to solve so I can use the Yoga in the stand configuration?

Just to close the loop on this, I've determined that the cause of my issue is the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework software/driver. I've disabled in the BIOS for now, and the machine is working very well. Will look for an update from Lenovo to address more definitively.

  • Is it possible to mirror only one display/space/desktop?

I've searched everywhere for an answer, but I just need to know if I'm "googling" the wrong combination of phrases (or if what I'm asking isn't possible).
My set-up is simple.  Macbook pro connected to a projector via VGA.  I've created another desktop (i.e. added a "space"), dubbed "Desktop 2.  Is there a way that I can have my Desktop 2 constantly being mirrored and routed to the projector, while I still work within Desktop 1?
For clarification, here's the scenario: I'm a teacher, and I want the student's "warm-up" to be showing on the projector screen from my computer's Desktop 2. While that's happening, I want to be able to be working on things like taking attendance on Desktop 1 without the students seeing (they'd still see Desktop 2's warm-up).
Thanks in advance for the good or bad news.

Thank you Mr. Bob Harris.  That would definitely work, but I failed to mention that I'd like to be able to avoid having to turn my head to look back/to the side towards the projector screen while using my computer (cursor, keyboard, etc.).  In other words, I'd like to mirror that second display so that what I'm seeing on "Desktop 2" is the same thing that's happening on the projector screen.  I know it sounds silly, but I'm a teacher who doesn't like to divert my attention away from the students in front of me (you'd be amazed at what can happen in 3-5 seconds....).

  • T430s 2352CTO 2 external monitors and laptop's LCD - is it possible?

    Hello,
I'm new to this forum, actually this is my first post, but I've been reading it for a while. I searched and searched and read till I'm blue in my face plus ran bunch of experiments and still can't figure out the issue.
this article clearly states it is possible to run triple display setup (assuming 1 of them is laptop's LCD) and 2 others are on Display Ports. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074304
But in my experience it is impossible.
I have 2 identical ViewSonic monitors (VG2236) connected to a Mini Dock Plus (433815U) via Display Port to DVI cables. In this configuration I can only use these two monitors or one of them in conjunction with laptop's LCD.
Windows display utility recognises all three displays but will shut the third one down if I try to extend the desktop to more than 2.
Please confirm that this configuration is possible or what am I doing wrong.
I really need to be able to use laptop's LCD and 2 external dispays for my work, that's the reason I bought the i7 version with descrete graphics
    Thanks,
    Sergei

  • Toggle from extended desktop to desktop mirroring.

The LCD went out on my milky white iMac. Everything else is fine on the computer so I figured I would simply use the mini-DVI port and hook it up to an external monitor.
    Only one problem....
It appears that by default, it extends your desktop which leaves me with a beautiful wallpaper but no way to access System Preferences to change to desktop mirroring. I'm thinking there must be some sort of keyboard shortcut but I can't seem to figure it out.
    Help!

    Hello svjesser
There are no keyboard short cuts for Displays or other Preferences. I could not test this (I currently only have one iMac), but you might be able to gain access to the Preferences in [Target Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] or [Remote Access|http://www.google.com/custom?q=intel+imac%20remote%20access&sa=Search&cl ient=pub-6263300333013957&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT:%23008000 ;GL:1;DIV:%23336699;VLC:663399;AH:center;BGC:FFFFFF;LBGC:336699;ALC:0000FF;LC:00 00FF;T:000000;GFNT:0000FF;GIMP:0000FF;FORID:1;&hl=en] with another iMac.
Sorry for not having anything more concrete!

  • Can the 2nd monitor be an extended desktop?

i know its a silly and simple question but im new to hooking up a second monitor. So if i get the right connector from the apple store and hook up a second monitor can it be an extended desktop or will it only be a mirrored image?

Can the 2nd monitor be an extended desktop?

  • Beyond 2560 x 1440 with External Monitors - is W540 the only Option?

    Hello Everyone,
I went through great efforts to upgrade my x201 to a T430s (NVIDIA) in order to drive 3 external monitors from a dock which I finally got to work.
I do this because I like to travel between home and the office, but have equally elaborate set ups with external video and external audio, yet while being able to travel with the same laptop.
I am now experimenting with 2, not 3 monitors, using the new LG 34" curved monitors, which are a bit bigger and display at 3440 x 1440.
The good news is using my T430s I am able to get both monitors to display at 3440 x 1440 and they look great!
The bad news is that if I open up just one too many windows, or drag something across the extended desktop, they are crashing.
When they crash, I lose the signal (DisplayPort) and get error messages from the monitors.
    I have already spoken to
    1) Lenovo sales
    2) Lenovo tech support
    3) Lenovo tech support in Atlanta
and no one seems to have any idea what I am talking about.
I am guessing I may need to upgrade from my T430s, which I would rather not do.
I am also guessing that the W540 would have enough graphics / video horsepower to drive at least 2 of these higher resolution monitors?
In an ideal world, I would not have the extra weight or features of the W540, but first and foremost, I want multiple and dazzling high resolution displays from a dock.
Given that I am going from 3 screens down to 2, also wondering if say, an X1 Carbon might drive 2 using a dock?
Or it is only able to drive 2 screens at 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440 best case.
    In summary, any advice please:
    1) W540 using LG "ultrawide" screens as described above
    2) Any other Lenovo laptop not as big or heavy as the W540 which would still have high end, high powered graphics capabilities when docked?
    Thank you and best regards,

Thank you for replies so far.
Re Lenovo tech "support" I am a die hard Lenovo fan (4 laptops so far...) but find Lenovo's website confusing and their tech support terrible.
For my T430s, I paid for at least an hour of support to no avail, before discovering that it was a simple Windows update that was the key to driving 3 external monitors, with better information generally coming from this forum.  Supposedly, even the T430s with the NVIDIA upgrade can handle 3 external monitors at 2560 x 1440.
Now, however, I would like to use bigger and higher resolution screens, even if it means going from 3 external monitors to only 2.
I have used the T430s and dock, driving 2 of the new Samsung 28" 4K monitors up to 2560 x 1440 without any issues.  But moving up to the LG 34 ultrawide screens with 3440 x 1440, I can only run one.  With 2 it becomes unstable.
I hope more Lenovo fans tune into the resolution and display quality  - it would only enhance the brand.
Even for business only users, with data and text, everything is cleaner, crisper and less fatiguing at the higher resolutions.
ColonelONeill thanks for suggestion but hoping to find an integrated, on board, plug and play, drop into the dock and be done with it solution.
So again, hoping that worst case, the W540 with the highest spec video card could drive 2 of the LG ultrawide monitors without struggling?
Or one of the other newer machines?
