Hi Ramkuma6,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are looking for some help connecting an external monitor to your HP notebook using an HDMI connection.
A great place to start is this document, which covers several different types of video connections.
Connecting a Monitor, Projector or TV (Windows 8)
Please let me know if this helps.

  • W520 external monitor not connecting properly

    W520, Windows 7 (64 bit), NVIDIA Quadro 1000M 2GB DDR3, purchased November 2011.  External monitor: HP 2511x.
Haven't been able to find this issue in a previous thread.
In Optimus (preferred) mode, when I plug an external monitor VGA, HDMI or DVI (via displayport) cable into the laptop or mini dock, the laptop LCD goes completely dark (black).  This happens whether the external monitor is turned on or off, for the VGA and HDMI plugs.  If the external monitor is turned off when the displayport plug is inserted, nothing happens:  the laptop screen stays on, but when the external monitor is turned on, with the displayport plug in use, the laptop LCD goes dark. When the plugs are removed, the laptop LCD comes back on, except when the displayport plug is removed (then, the laptop screen stays dark).
In all cases, the external monitor is not recognized by the laptop, and if turned on at the time (the external monitor), shows a message which reads that it is going to sleep.
Device Manager shows the Intel and NVIVIA display adapters and does not show the external monitor (because I cannot hook it up without darkening the laptop screen).
A few months ago I had the Optimus arrangement working, using the NVIDIA control panel to set up a clone mode.  The external monitor worked beautifully.  Then I disconnected from the external monitor for several weeks, and now it will not work.
The external monitor was used until very recently on a separate PC, which I no longer have, and the external monitor driver was reloaded this morning.
I welcome sugestions on how to plug into the laptop without causing the laptop screen to go dark, which I think would then allow me to set up the external monitor as desired.
    Thanks,
    RR

But did you RUN the nVidia driver file that you downloaded???  It is an EXE, and you must RUN it after downloading.
The fact that your Device Manager -> Display Adapters still shows "Video Controller(VGA compatible)" specifically tells us that you have NOT YET INSTALLED THE CORRECT DRIVER FOR YOUR VIDEO CARD!!!  You are still running with the vanilla generic Microsoft VGA drivers which will work generically and support only minimal capability for EVERY SINGLE VIDEO CARD MANUFACTURED.  It doesn't support all of the capabilities of the K1000M.
YOU MUST ACTUALLY RUN THE DOWNLOADED DRIVER INSTALLATION FILE EXE, in order to perform the process of actually installing the driver for your "Video Controller(VGA compatible)" device, which of course is really the K1000M.
Once that driver is correctly installed, it will now appear as "NVIDIA QUADRO K1000M", instead of "Video Controller(VGA compatible)" as you currently show.
The reason your desktop icons are currently very big, and that everything else is currently very big/enormous, is because your desktop resolution is not set correctly... although it may be set as high as it can go for the moment.  Only when you finally install the true nVidia driver will your default resolution be presented at what the hardware monitor "recommended" resolution should be, which is likely at least 1920x1080 if not 1920x1200.  Then everything will appear "normal size", and at the very least will not appear to be ENORMOUS as you currently see.
Also, I'm expecting that once you get the correct nVidia driver installed for the K1000M that your external monitor will now work perfectly, and will not black out.
So... even while you're still using the current vanilla generic MS VGA driver (although again, your mission is to install the nvidia driver for your K1000M), just right-click on the desktop and select "screen resolution" from the popup menu, to get the "screen resolution" dialog window.
Then click in the "screen resolution" dropdown list to get a dropdown (with a slider) offering you to change resolutions.  Pull the slider up to whatever you want and click, and then push the OK button. You'll then be offered a confirmation dialog window allowing you to click OK or CANCEL within 15 seconds to accept the resoluton change. Click OK to keep what you just set.
Your desktop icons and everything else will now appear smaller (or at least "normal").  Temporarily, you've got things satisfactory at least.
But you'll do the same thing again AFTER INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVERS.  This time the dropdown "screen resolution" list will have a slider whose top value will show "recommended", and will probably be 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. Pull the slider all the way up to that value and click. Then again, push OK, and OK to the confirmation.
Again, your absolute test goal is to see  "NVIDIA QUADRO K1000M" in Device Manager.  You should NOT BE SEEING "VIDEO CONTROLLER (VGA COMPATIBLE)".
The installation of the nVidia driver will also get you "nVidia Control Panel", where you can then perform additional customizations, such as whether or not you want to use BOTH the laptop screen as well as external monitor configured in either "laptop screen only", or "clone mode" (i.e. duplicate of single desktop on both screens), or "extended mode" (i.e. double-wide desktop extending across both screens), or "external monitor only," (with laptop screen dark).
Again... YOU MUST RUN THAT DOWNLOADED NVIDIA DRIVER INSTALLATION FILE EXE. It doesn't run itself, unless that's what you have set in your browser when offered the choice of RUN or SAVE.  But if you SAVE it, then you must yourself manually run it after the download completes.
IT MUST BE RUN TO INSTALL THE DRIVER.  Then you'll see "NVIDIA QUADRO K1000M" in device manager. Until and unless you see that value, if you still see "VIDEO CONTROLLER (VGA COMPATIBLE)" then you have NOT YET DONE WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.
    Understood?

  • External monitor not detected

I just got a Samsung SyncMaster 2033 SW Plus monitor and tried connecting through the DVI port of my MacBook Pro, but its not getting detected. I'm using the mini display port to DVI adapter to connect. The monitor seems to work perfectly when I connected to the VGA port of my PC, but its not even been detected on the mac. I checked system profiler and it says no external monitor connected. Please help!!

I have a similar problem with my new MBP. I have tried to connect it to my ViewSonic VP920b via the Mini DisplayPort to DVI, but get no video on the external monitor. The system profile shows it as connected, and if I turn mirroring on/off, my MBP monitor changes resolution to mirror (or not) the external, but there's no picture, just black screen.
    I've tried
•closing the lid, connecting the external Mini DisplayPort, then waking without opening the lid,
•changing the energy saver preferences to each of the 2 graphics card (Graphics Card: better battery life/better performance),
•changing the external monitor resolution through all the possibilities,
•restart with the external monitor connected
•restart without the external monitor, then connect.

Since the System Profile software can contact the monitor, and since the MBP screen changes in response to connecting or disconnecting the external monitor, I believe it's safe to assume there is no problem with the DVI cable or the MiniPort Display dongle. I just have no video displayed on the external monitor
    Any suggestions?

  • MacBook Air is getting hot when external monitor is connected - restart solves the problem

I have a two weeks old Mac Book Air 11" (128GB / 4GB / i5). Sometimes when I connect it to my external monitor, the FAN is getting loud and the MacBook becomes very warm on the surface near the "F3 button". The activity monitor says CPU is at 0-1% and there's no process that causes any CPU load (I switched to "show all processes" of course). Nevertheless something makes the Mac becoming hot. A simple restart while the external monitor is connected solves the issue completely, temperature and fan speed are instantly decreasing. Is this a issue related to the graphics driver? For me it seems the behavior is caused by the graphics processor rather than by the i5 CPU as activity monitor does not show any process causing high CPU load.
    Known issue?
    Thanks!

I was runnig into the same problem. Plugging in to the apple 23" display at work worked well, but when I plugged in my Dell 23" at home the fan started being noisy...
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION: it seems to me that putting the air to into SLEEP MODE and back solves it as well!!
    I will confirm later on.

Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • External monitor USB connected NOT HDMI - xperia neo

Could anybody share details of external monitor tried with usb with xperia neo?
I have seen some monitors like AOS e1649Fwu which can connect with USB.
I don't have any HDMI ported monitor.
Also I want to use USB OTG capability to connect external devices. I was able to access mouse and keyboard.
If anybody able to access other devices like pen drive etc.. please share the steps how you have achieved with xperia neo.
All these queries are for "xperia neo" only"

As I understand this requires root access.
I will therefore move this tread to the correct forum.

  • External Monitor Not Working With Macbook Pro

My computer was working fine with an external monitor, then my computer froze, and I had to hold down the power button. When I turned it back on, my computer would not work with an external monitor. I've tried different cables, so it's not the cable. The monitor is being detected by the computer, but nothing is showen on the external monitor. When connecting the monitor to the computer, the computer's screen goes blue, then turns back to normal. I cannot reset the SMC by removing the battery, I do not have the confidence to remove my battery, and do not have the time to send the computer to someone else to do it.
I also tried updating my OS from 10.7.4 (Might've been 10.7.3) to 10.7.5.
My computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010), running OS X 10.7.5 Lion.
I need to get this problem fixed ASAP, any help is appreciated.
    Kind Regards,

I forgot to mention, I'm connecting the monitor via MiniDisplay -> HDMI. I've also tried USB -> HDMI and USB -> DVI -> HDMI but none of them seem to work.

  • External Monitor Not Working after 10.9.3

I have two Macs which are not working with an external monitor anymore through the thunerbolt port. I have tried different types of connections (HDMI and DVI) and two different external monitors in an attempt to determine the issue. The only common denominator to the issue is the update to 10.9.3 OS X. I have also reset PRAM and changed between mirroring and non mirroring to no avail.
    Mac #1:
    MacBook Pro8,1
    Intel Core i5
    2.4ghz
    Intel HD Graphics 3000 512MG
    External Monitor: Resolution 1920X1080 @60hz
    32 Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Rotatino: Supported
    Mac#2:
    MacBookAir6,2
    Intel Core i5
    1.3ghz
    Intel HD Graphics 5000
External Monitor: No information as it's not connected at this time.

Well low and behold I tried clearing PRAM again and I reset my monitor to factory defaults. Reconnected my monitor and the thing works now. Very strange but I'm Happy that it's working again. *WHEW*

  • Ultra dock + three external monitors not working

    Hardware:
    W540 + Ultra Dock (170W)
    2x 24" LCDs @ 1920X1200 (DVI only)
    1x 30" LCD @ 2560x1600 (DVI only)
1x Display Port to DVI Active Converter (for the 30" LCD)
What I want to have is four displays: W540 LCD + 3 external monitors as described above. However, I can only get two of the external displays to turn on regardless of how many chickens I sacrifice. Note: I've searched extensively to see if others have had this problem, which they obviously have, but none of the solutions worked.
I think the issue is the 'advanced' mode, but I already turned it on in the BIOS. The laptop LCD works correctly (2880x1620), the 30" LCD works correctly with the display port to DVI active adapter (2560x1600), and one of the 24" LCDs works correctly (1920x1200). However, the other 24" LCD isn't available in Windows as a detected display unless I start swapping cables, which will then enable it while disabling the other 24" LCD.
For reference, the connections are as follows:
    Laptop LCD (built-in)
30" LCD: DisplayPort to DVI (active); Ultra Dock DisplayPort 0
24" LCD number 1: DisplayPort to DVI cable (passive); Ultra Dock DisplayPort 1
24" LCD number 2: DVI to DVI; Ultra Dock DVI Port 0
It's my understanding that the K1100M discrete graphics card should be driving all three of the external displays, but that isn't the case right now. I see one 24" and the 30" displays in the Nvidia Control Panel and I see all three working monitors (including the laptop LCD) in botht he Nvidia Control Panel and the Windows Display area.
    Things I've tried:
Uninstalled + reinstalled Nvidia Quadro drivers
Uninstalled + reinstalled Intel 4600 drivers
    Enabled Advanced mode in BIOS
    Restarted 5,000 times
Swapped cables until my fingers started to bleed
Updated the firmware of the Ultra Dock (it was already fully updated)
According to this page, I should be able to connect six displays including the built-in LCD. When I first looked at it, I thought I could use both Ultra Dock DisplayPort ports as well as the Ultra Dock DVI port, but it's very unclear if that's actually the case. What does it mean by DP or HDMI and DP or DVI? Does that mean I can use both DisplayPorts (which I'm currently doing and it works) only? Does it mean I can use both DisplayPorts as well as HDMI and DVI? Does it mean if I want to use HDMI and DVI that I can't use either DisplayPort? Does it mean DVI and HDMI both share an output with one of the DisplayPorts so only one of each can be used at a time? TERRIBLE DOCUMENTATION.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been extremely frustrating. I have a feeing the solution is going to be a disappointment as well because it's probably going to involve buying yet another adapter and/or using the Mini-DP output on the laptop instead of, you know, actually being able to use the expensive Ultra Dock...
    [rant]
I have no idea how to tell if everything is working because the graphics card situation is extremely confusing. I didn't realize when I bought the laptop that the discrete card couldn't drive the laptop's built-in LCD, which is very annoying. Or, maybe that's not true, but the documentation is so confusing that I can't be sure either way. Also, and this really pissed me off, the Ultra Dock DVI connector can't drive a dual link display. What the hell??? Why was this not clearly annotated somewhere? I really hated needing to purchase a DisplayPort to DVI active adapter to make my brand new laptop dock work as advertised. UGH.
    [/rant]

    I'm struggling with a very similar problem. (Thinkpad W540, K2100, Ultradock 170W)
I am using 2 external monitors right now in bios display standard mode - it's the only way they work at all for me right now. I have tried uninstalling graphics drivers, enabling advanced mode, and restarting, but none of the external displays are detected. I've also tried updating the dock's firmware, but it doesn't seem to be updating (this may have already been updated).
    Current working setup:
    - 2 x 22" external LCDs connected to Ultradock via DP -> DVI cables
    - Laptop integrated LCD
Related but not quite as equally frustrating, the integrated LCD does not resume when waking the computer from a sleep state. Only a reboot brings the display back.
I'd like to connect another 24" display over HDMI, but don't have any confidence of it working since advanced mode is utterly worthless for me at the moment. I'm quite dissatisfied especially since I purchased an extended warranty and last time I called for support Lenovo tried to sell me an additional support plan claiming that software was not covered under my current warranty.

  • External monitor not showing up

    Hi,
I recently bought a Macbook pro 2.4 gHz  OS 10.6.4. I am trying to use an external monitor with it. I bought a Mini display to dvi connector.  When I connect it, it sees the monitor as my Dell ST2010, but won't display. I now about mirroring and stuff. I'm thinking it might be a bad mini display adaptor, but it sees the monitor name as the Dell. So not sure.
    any suggestions?
    thanks, Jason

    Hi Jason,
First, run all the updates in Software Update and repair permissions.
If that doesn't do it, try an SMC reset:

  • External Monitor not showing.

    Good Day All,
I seem to be having problems with setting up my external monitor...
I have a JVC tape deck, I forgot the model, and a SONY TV(forgot the model).
What I did was I used a firewire plugged it to the back of my g5 then onto my tape deck. From my tape deck to my TV.
Then I set my stuff all up in FCP.
    1. VIEW> Using FIREWIRED DV PAL
(As a note my FCP recognizes the FIREWIRE becoz when I unplug the firewire the FCP notices and gives a warning)
    2. VIEW> Set to ALL FRAMES.
    3. Mirrored on Desktop.
And when I Log and Capture I see the footage on the TV and on my monitor and yes I closed the Log and Capture window before i do anything.
I also turned on the tv and the tape deck then i turn on the FCP and it recognizes it.
These equipment I've used before and WAS working, but the office moved so the stuff was moved. But now, nothing i do works...PLS I NEED HELP. I'm Making a presentation so I need my monitor.
    Pls and TNX!!!
If it helps... I also have 2 CPU monitors attached to my G5(my secondary and primary). When I set my playback to Digital Main/Secondary they work. I've also tried disconnecting the other monitor incase that hampers the process.
    Thank you very much!

Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/Monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

I have a 27", mid 2011 iMac OSX 10.9.1 and a ViewSonic monitor. I purchased a Thunderbolt to VGA video adapter cable and connected the external monitor. I'm getting nothing. It's not being recognized at all.

  • External monitor not recognized (X200)

    Hi,
I have an X200 with Vista
When I connect an external monitor (or projector) it is not recognized.  Shift-F7 results in a message that no external monitor is detected.  However, if I leave the monitor connected, put the system in standby and then resume, it recognizes the external display.
Any thoughts to how I can get it to recognize without this work-around? Thanks

I had the same problem.  I think it's a vista device driver issue.  Try this-
Power down your laptop.  Plug in the external monitor.  Boot the computer - it should default to the external monitor, and Windows should recognize it.  Then, shut down normally.
Pull the monitor cable, boot your laptop regularly, reattach the cable, and give it a try.
    It worked for me.
