External monitor not displaying full quality

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 15.4" Retina. I hooked it up to my Acer External Monitor via the HDMI out on the Macbook. My display settings are set to 1080p, however the display seems very blury and pixelated. I used to have a Late 2007 Macbook that I hooked up via mini display to HDMI and that displayed in perfect, crisp 1080p HD. Hopefully someone can help me figure out how to clear things up.

Have you had any luck fixing this issue Marcello? I had the same problem and found that the following fix worked for me somewhat:

  • External monitor not displaying full 1920x1080 (black bars around desktop), Pavilion g6

I have a Pavilion g6 notebook running Windows 8.1. I have an external Acer S232HL display hooked up via an HDMI cable. The resolution is set to 1920x1080 in Windows, and I'm only outputting to the external monitor.
Windows thinks the resolution is set to 1920x1080, but for some reason on the monitor it is scaled to something like 1734x980 with black borders (unused pixels) all around.
All drivers and OS are up to date. Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7640G via an AMD A8-4500M APU.
Somebody posted what looks to be the same problem for this AMD chipset, though for a different manufacturer:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/G505S-doesn-t-full-screen-my-External-Monitor...

    (Workaround)
Since I don't expect to find a fix for this, I've resigned myself to setting the resultion to 1776x1000 and setting the monitor in a 1-for-1 pixel mode (called "Aspect" in the options). I still end up with the borders, but the graphics are nice and sharp because it isn't trying to scale 1920x1080 into a smaller resolution.

  • External Monitor not displaying correct resolution.

I just hooked up my Viewsonic 19" widescreen display (1440x900) to my MacBook Pro. Ive closed the lid of my laptop and set the resolution to 1440x900 (60hz) in System Preferences yet the external display is still fuzzy. I looked in the monitors menus and it says its currently displaying 1152x864!!!!
When i tried mirror mode it looks like it thinks the external monitor is a different size but both screens have the same native resolution.
I've tried a bunch of different resolutions but none of them seem to use my monitors native resolution. I'm using the included DVI to VGA adaptor into the monitor. The monitor works fine if I plug it into my old Dell XP Laptop or XP desktop.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same "fuzzy" picture on external LCD attached to MacBook Pro here (2GHz, 2GB RAM, 10.4.11). Been using a mediocre NEC LCD72vx for along time and figured that was the reason, but I tried a stellar ViewSonic VG191b that I use with my Windows desktop for layout and found the same slightly fuzzy picture, despite also noting that the resolution setting was the native one. Note, I use the external display rotated 90, but I saw no change at 0 rotation. Straight DVI on both.
Half of the fun of having DVI out is its usefulness for layout in publishing. Powerful MBP, poor external display quality. I think some sort of fix is indicated here.

  • External monitor not going full resolution on extended desktop

    Hello,
I have a Gateway widescreen 1680x1050 resolution monitor plugged into my 13" Macbook Aluminum computer. When I have both my external and built in display turned on extended mode, my external monitor only goes up to 1600x1000 resolution, which is obviously lower than full-res. When I close the lid of my Macbook (and run the external display only), the external display goes up to full 1680x1050 resolution. Could someone please help me solve the problem of my Gateway external display going to less than full res on extended display mode.
    Thanks a lot!
    Adrian

There is a clue here in what might be going on. Note that the MacBook's 1280x800 display is a 16:10 aspect ratio (exactly). Now, the external resolution that is reported by shmootz is 1600x1000 which is also a 16:10 ratio. It looks to me that the system is running as if it is in the mirrored mode. The video driver will force the displays to the same aspect ratio when running as mirrored displays.
I'd try a few things to see if you can reset the display options. First, try toggling the "Mirror Displays" option in System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement. Second, you may want to try a reset of your PRAM and the SMC.

  • External Monitor will not display full view MS apps.

I have a HDMI monitor that was previously working fine.  The other day I went to use Word and Excel and the applications would only appear in the lower toolbar.  When I would select them they would not enlarge.  They remained in a thumbnail view.  My email and Internet work as expected.  Any ideas what's causing this?

  • [Solved] Can't get external monitor to display correct resolution

I have a laptop with 1280x800 resolution, I hooked up a spare monitor we had sitting around that has a native resolution of 1280x1024 to my laptop. When I hook it up the external monitor displays a resolution of 1024x768. I use KDE 4.5, so I tried to change the resolution for the external monitor in System Settings but 1024x768 is the highest resolution listed.
I've tried messing around with xrandr through the command line (somewhat anyway) but I'm at a loss in trying to get the external monitor to display its native resolution. I'd like to get the external monitor to possibly replace my laptop monitor as it would add another 224 vertical pixels. Anyone have any ideas?

You had said the native resolution is 1280x1024 -- I therefore assume this is an LCD monitor.
I would not generally expect LCDs to flicker.  At what vertical frequency are you driving the display? Most LCDs operate at 60Hz.  This is regardless of the local power line frequency or television standard.
Many CRT monitors are driven at 75 Hz to keep them from flickering or from "beating" with ambient lighting that is flickering at the local power line frequency (50 or 60 Hz).  Again, this is not the correct thing to do with LCDs.
Bottom Line: Make sure your vertical frame rate is 60 Hz.

  • HT5019 MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Can I have more than one application displayed at a time?

I would like to have my MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Question, how can I have more than one application displayed at a time? IE: I would like email on one monitor, Finder on my laptop, and iTunes on the other. Possible?
With extended desktop, it appears that I can only have one application presenting at a time. Sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple displays.
I am using the HDMI and the mini HDMI connectors.

  • Safari does not display full URL

Safari 6.0.5 will not display full URL until I click in the URL Location bar.  For example, the full URL of this page is:

Is this new behavior a featue or a bug?  Is there any way to make it display the full URL as it has since the beginning of time?
    Thanks!

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • External Monitor not showing.

    Good Day All,
I seem to be having problems with setting up my external monitor...
I have a JVC tape deck, I forgot the model, and a SONY TV(forgot the model).
What I did was I used a firewire plugged it to the back of my g5 then onto my tape deck. From my tape deck to my TV.
Then I set my stuff all up in FCP.
    1. VIEW> Using FIREWIRED DV PAL
(As a note my FCP recognizes the FIREWIRE becoz when I unplug the firewire the FCP notices and gives a warning)
    2. VIEW> Set to ALL FRAMES.
    3. Mirrored on Desktop.
And when I Log and Capture I see the footage on the TV and on my monitor and yes I closed the Log and Capture window before i do anything.
I also turned on the tv and the tape deck then i turn on the FCP and it recognizes it.
These equipment I've used before and WAS working, but the office moved so the stuff was moved. But now, nothing i do works...PLS I NEED HELP. I'm Making a presentation so I need my monitor.
    Pls and TNX!!!
If it helps... I also have 2 CPU monitors attached to my G5(my secondary and primary). When I set my playback to Digital Main/Secondary they work. I've also tried disconnecting the other monitor incase that hampers the process.
    Thank you very much!

Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/Monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

  • HDMI output to monitor not displaying all colors

I am trying to use a second monitor on my Satellite S55t-b5152 and am able to get 1920x1080 output from the HDMI port through an adapter to either VGA or DVI into my external monitor, but with either adapter the colors look washed-out and not all the colors that are displayed on the internal monitor show up on the external monitor.  For example the position indicator in scroll bar on some apps shows up on the internal monitor, but disappears when I drag that window onto the external monitor.  I've tried multiple monitors and they all have the same symptom. I've investigated this some on external forums and it seems to be that the HDMI output under some conditions assumes that it is connected to a TV instead of a monitor and it limits the output color range.  On some graphics drivers it is possible to override that assumption and get the full range output from the HDMI port.  I haven't found a way to do that for the graphics driver on the S55t-b5152. Has anyone figured this out?

    Satellite S55T-B5152
through an adapter to either VGA or DVI...
Just want to comment that I'm not at all surprised that an adapter does not produce true colors. I'm sometimes amazed they work at all.
Yours is HDMI 2.0 which complicates things still further.

  • External monitor not working after ML upgrade

I have a late 2008 Unibody Macbook and normally use it in clamshell mode with a Samsung 2043NW monitor if I'm in the office. Previously working fine in 10.5.8 through mini display port adapter. Upgraded via fresh install of 10.6.8 to ML, and the monitor flickered on occasionally but otherwise would not work - when it did display it showed the same resolution as the macbook screen i.e. 1280 X 800 instead of 1680 X 1050.
There's a thread here related to this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2387462?start=15&tstart=0  but this software was not the answer. I can now view the screen, but it is still being sent a resolution of 1280X800, rather than 1680X1050 (i.e. a fuzzy mess). It also will not work in clamshell mode at all, and just goes to sleep when the case is shut.
Anyone have a solution for this, or have I been 'obsolesced'? Does anyone have a unibody Macbook that DOES work with an external monitor?

OK, now here's an interesting thing - the macbook has begun to work in clamshell mode. This is REALLY weird. Tried again this morning in the hope of getting back the monitor control icon in the toolbar and it booted straight into clamshell mode with the lid shut.
When I first had this running 10.5 it would only work in clamshell mode if you pressed the power button and immediately closed the lid before the screen lit up grey. More recently it has been perfectly happy to enter clamshell mode after a period of use normally, just plugging in the monitor and shutting the lid. It would be nice if this behaviour were to start again soon.

  • External monitor not working

    Hello all,
I have a PB G3 Series (Wallstreet), running OS 10.2.8. Having trouble running an external monitor. When I start up the computer, I get (on the external display) the Apple logo and the ticking dial for about 15 seconds, but everything after that is displayed on the PB display, and I can't find a way to switch the display in the Preferences.
I'm sure I'm overlooking something obvious, so be kind, please! Any ideas?
    Thank you!
    Brad

    Brad,
When you open up the System Preferences do you see a Displays pane?
I hooked an external monitor to my Wallstreet running 10.3.9. When I opened the Displays preference I had settings for simulcast (mirroring), external and the laptop display in the resolutions window. After unhooking the monitor the only settings that remained where 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 resolutions for the laptop.
Hope this is something new and not something you already know.
    Shane
