External Monitor on an iBook?

Hello,
I have an iBook G3 700 mzh. The monitor no longer work on the computer. It starts up and if I hold a flashlight behind the Apple, I can see that the computer is working. Trying to replace the monitor or inverter is just way to beyond me.
I have a 20" Dell monitor, is it possible to hook it up to the iBook so I can use it again?
The Dell monitor is currently hooked up to my PM G5, but am considering getting a larger monitor.
Thanks

Most often this is a break in the inverter cable, usually near the hinge point. It can be diagnosed by manipulating the cable while the computer is running. The iBook has to be taken apart. BTW I do this repair.

Yes you need thee mini VGA to VGA adapter. It's the second one here:

  • External monitor for 12" iBook G4 800MHz

My iBook G4 800MHz has recently been promoted to being my main desktop computer. I am in the market for an external monitor that will work well with it. Does anyone who has direct experience with attaching external monitors to the iBook G4 have any advice?
So far, I have learned that it will not support any more than 1024x768. However, most of the monitors I've seen are listed at higher than that. Will these monitors work with it, albeit at the lower resolution? This ViewSonic, in particular, has caught my eye. I use a ViewSonic at work (with a Windows PC) and I'm very happy with it so I was leaning in that direction.
I also understand about the video mirroring issue, and have discovered that I could use ScreenSpanningDoctor to overcome it. But unless I get a monitor that works, I'm being premature to worry about that at this point.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

LCD screens have a "native" resolution. This is the resolution they're designed to run at. While you can usually lower the resolution of an LCD screen from its native resolution, the results will not be very good. You can see this if you change the resolution of your iBook's LCD screen to 800 x 600 for a little while. The display in your link has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024. So, it may be capable of stepping down to 1024 x 768, but the result may be a fuzzy image. Without the Screen Spanning Doctor, this display might not be a very good choice.
CRT screens are much more capable of changing resolutions. A 17" CRT screen might be a better choice whether you decide to use the SSD or not.
Someone else may have to comment on that screen's performance, though.

  • External monitor flicker with ibook G3

I plugged in an external monitor into my iBook G3. At the highest resolution it flickers/ shakes. Is there anything I can do to resolve this?
    Thanks,
    Jacob

Is the monitor set at the same resolution as the iBook?

  • External monitor only with iBook

Is there a way to use the iBook as a desktop having the display on an external monitor? I know I can connect via the video out port, but can I put the iBook lid down and use a USB keyboard? For some reason I remember being able to use the laptop like this back in the OS 8 days, but recall how to do it. TIA. CS.

You should not operate your iBook (Dual USB) computer with the lid closed.
Outside of that, you should be able to use it with an external monitor and a USB keyboard just fine.

  • Can iMac G5 be used as an external monitor for an iBook G4

Is it possible to connect an iBook G4 to an iMac G5 so as to use the G5 as an external monitor? (Not spanning necessarily, just using it as a monitor.)

Yes, if you are willing to live with the limited dimension of the iBook G4. You can use a VNC client, such as Chicken of the VNC, on the iMac G5, and after configuring remote administration on your G4, and hooking the two up with an ethernet cable (or IP over firewire) you can connect and get the screen echoed to your G5. It will only be at the max resolution of your G4 (1024x768) though.

  • External Monitor, iBook, and SwitchResX

I recently got a 19" external monitor for my ibook this Christmas. The screen image is blurred and stretched. I called both the monitor company and apple, but neither one was helpful.
I saw some discussions about SwitchResX. I downloaded it and have been tinkering with it, but am very confused. Can anyone help me?

The best connection is DisplayPort.  DP 1 and 2 are no different.  DVI is also a digital connection and high quality.  VGA is fine for most people but is not able to display some of the high end resolutions.
You can only use one connection in each of the numbered connection blocks.  For instance, you can use DP1 and DP2 at the same time.  You cannot use DP1 and DVI1 at the same time.  Nor can you use DP2 and DVI2 at the same time.

  • Widescreen external monitor

Dear all, I was thinking to buy a Samsung 19" 16:9 (max 1440x900) external monitor for my iBook but after a visit in this forum I realized that the max res of my iBook G3 is stuck on 1024x768. Is it true? There is no way to up it, even with a 16:9? Thanks for your help, Marco

Some have used a hack to enable higher resolution, I believe, but it is not a recommended thing to do.

  • Using external monitor with a bad logic board???

Can you use an external monitor on your ibook, if you have a bad logic board, to use it? Or is the only solution to use the shim, or get it fixed. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
If the graphics chip on the logic board has come loose, it won't drive the graphics to an external display, either. Sorry.

  • External monitor green

I have a 12" G4 iBook with a broken screen. Before replacing it I plugged it into an external monitor. The iBook booted up just fine, but the monitor was green! I fiddled with the iBook display settings and the monitor's settings to no avail. Does anybody have an idea what is going on here? Many thanks.
    John

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test? If there is some sort of problem with your video RAM, it should show up in the form of an error code.
Is the problem just with this particular display? It might be worth trying another external display if you could find one to borrow or use, just to isolate the problem either to the iBook or to the display.
    Good luck!

  • External monitor hookup

I'm not sure how to hook up an external monitor to my ibook G4. What do I need to do this?

You need an Apple VGA Display Adapter to connect a device with a VGA port, or an Apple Video Adapter to connect to a device such as a TV or VCR.

  • Connecting a 2007 external monitor to a 2001 ibook

My new external monitor has a DVI connector and my ibook has a mini-vga port. I ordered a mini-VGA to standard-VGA cable from Apple and I ordered a DVI-to-VGA cable from Apple. However, the DVI connector has a male configuration and the monitor has a male DVI configuration. The mini-VGA plugs in nicely to the ibook but it ends in a female configuration. The DVI connector also has a female configuration on the VGA end.
Simply, Is it possible to get a cable or a combination of adaptors and cables to connect a DVI monitor plug to the mini-VGA port of my aged ibook?

fishhead, Welcome to the discussion area!
As you discovered the "DVI-to-VGA cable" from Apple isn't going to work.
To convert from VGA-to-DVI requires an active device and all of the ones I have seen cost several hundreds of dollars.
Don't be fooled by DVI-to-VGA adapters which are common and inexpensive. They won't work converting in the opposite direction.

  • External monitor with ibook as desktop

Is there a way to close the lid of my ibook and use it as a desktop when I'm at home connected to an external monitor? Does that make sense?

I found the iBook G4 manual and could find nothing referring to the question you have. About the only info I could find sent me to the Mac's built in Help function. Below is the quote from the manual.
For More Information on Using an External Monitor or TV
Additional information on using and configuring an external monitor is available in
Mac OS Help. Choose Help > Mac Help from the menu bar and search for “monitor.”

  • Ibook G3/300mhz - external monitor

Hello Everyone and salutations from the world of Medieval Mac!
Well I finally broke down and bought an OSX machine. Since I have a 3 and 1 year old I was limited to a purchase price of 70 dollars so I got a clamshell G3/300mhz ibook off of ebay. Lo and behold there is not external monitor port. I just recently discovered plate armour and regular hygiene (** plague) so..."Who knew?!?"
Anyhoo is there any way to run an external monitor off of the lonely USB port on this sucker? If so can it go through a USB hub so I can also use a keyboard designed for typing with normal sized hands (maybe I should take off the gauntlets)?

    Christian,
There was no video out in the early iBooks. Starting with the 366 and 466 MHz Clamshells there was a composite video out. After that they all had VGA outputs.
You can plug any standard Apple or PC keyboard into that USB port as well as an external mouse.

  • Arranging External Monitor on iBook G4 Running 10.4.11?

I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.11. I hooked up an external monitor and it came on no problem. However, I can only get it to mirror the laptop monitor. How do I get it so that it I can "Arrange" it? Is it not possible with this computer?
It has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9550...
    Thanks,
    R~

The iBooks only have the ability to mirror the internal display to an external display.

You may want to try posting in the iBook (colors) Forum.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum (the forum for the first all-white iBooks).
    Good luck.
