External Monitor Producing Black Sides

Hey,
I just got a new LG monitor and I am using it as an external display to my 2011 macbook pro 15". I am not using the option "best for display" because every time I do it switches the resolution to 800 x 600 when it should be 1920 x 1080, 60 Hz. The problem is that every time I do this I get a black side. I have changed the settings inside the monitor itself but I cannot change them anymore to fit the screen. If anyone has any solutions please help.

  • Satellite A100-646 and external monitor shows black screen

    Hello to everybody,
I have a similar problem with A100-646 (bought in Italy). Laptop's LCD and external monitor shows black screen but system boots without other problem. When laptop is not used for a long time (half a year) it work for one week without any problem.
Unfortunately, there is no proper service in a place where I live. Perhaps, there is a problem with power supply.
Is there other idea? Does anybody have a service manual? ([email protected])

It is not easy to find shop where you can order original and new hardware components.
Best source for such parts is definitely eBay where you can buy used but well working components.
Upgrade? You must know that upgrade on mobile computers is not the same as on desktops. Cooling possibilities are not the best and each notebook model has optimized cooling system for original parts. So new graphic card can be more powerful and produce more heat and it is definitely not good for your notebook. So best thing you can do is to replace it with original part.

  • Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

  • External monitor goes black when macbook pro has magsafe connected

    Hi,
I have bought an external monitor about 1 week ago, and I have it connected with a minidisplay to dvi cable, and a dvi cable to the monitor.
It was working OK -well, it had some sudden flash to black screen that lasted about 1 second, but nothing else- until thir morning when it just started showing a black screen. Mac OS sees the monitor, and I can move windows over there, etc. It's "alive". But I only see a black screen on the monitor.
I tested with other computer, and it works OK. The cables work too.
What I discovered is that if I unplug the power adaptor from the MBP the monitor screen shows correctly.
It works OK only if the magsafe adaptor is unplugged from the MBP, it doesn't care if the magsafe adaptor is plugged to the power or not; only if it's connected to the mac book pro.
It seems like some magnet stuff is making a mess there. What could it be? I can't work on the monitor only in battery power...
I tried resetting nvram and the other stuffs that I found here, but nothing works.
    Thanks!

  • External monitor shows black screen

    Hey fella's,
I have an early 2011, 11'' Macbook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1, which I've been hooking up to an IPS226 LG Flatron external monitor.
It did a number on me last week: the external monitor decided to show only a completely black screen. Like it's in power saving mode, except it isn't: the Mac recognises its existence, the laptop's monitor becomes a secondary screen. When I unplug the external monitor, it says "switching to power saving mode" and then goes black again...
Here's the kicker: I tried hooking it up to other laptops using different cables (mine is HDMI, so I tried VGA to another laptop) - worked like a charm. Then, when I plugged mine back in, also worked! Until today. Now it's happened again. What sorcery is this?
    Thanks!

    Hi Polindrom,
To troubleshoot this issue where the external display you're using with your Mac appears blank, please follow the directions outlined below.
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • HT3131 Clamshell mode not working even after powering off and reconnecting display; external monitor goes black anyway

After connecting an external monitor (non-Mac) to my MacBook (Mac OSX 10.6.6) w/proper adaptor, setting up to use clamshell mode as per manual, the external still goes black even after putting MacBook to sleep, disconnecting and reconnecting external and powering up again as suggested in Support. Displays are set to Mirror. Also, when I open Displays in System preferences, 2 different windows for Resolution settings appear. Where have I gone wrong? This monitor (Viewsonic) came with it's own software for setup on a Windows PC, but of course it is not being used on the MacBook.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi Mike,
Yes I followed all the procedueres....except for waking the computer using a keyboard click. For obvious reasons one is just inclined to open the top of the MacBook to wake it when the external goes dark...I did that twice, until I realized that very last step was needed to 'wake' it. It worked. Something so simple, easy to overlook I guess.
I did leave the monitors mirrored, fyi, if I don't then all I can access from the external are the resolution settings. This Viewsonic comes pre-loaded with Windows software of it's own and doesn't quite behanve the way my previous external did, but I got it figured out.
    Thanks for your response, tho!

  • External monitor on windows side

so i have the new macbook pro and the external monitor works fine for mirroring. However when i switch to my windows side. I want to be able to use my external display to play my game. The only option it gives me is to extend my desktop and this part i can see my wallpaper on the external monitor.but when i launch the game it only launches on my laptop and not the monitor...the only option is to extend and not to mirror it...does anyone know what the problem is?
I also cant get internet on my window side either

Hi, I have had similar issues in the past.
Here is what I did to fix.
In Windows (I have XP SP-3) right-click on desktop, go down half-way to 'Graphics Properties' (Please note - this is NOT 'Properties' at the bottom), you will get the advanced settings for the Displays.
From here you can configure your displays under the Settings tab. You will see the option for mirroring or extending.
I have found that it is NECESSARY to create a Scheme (Click on Scheme Options in the upper right-hand corner) because Windows does not keep the settings after rebooting (sometimes it does - go figure)
ALSO - check the box to Show Tray Icon for the Graphic accelerator. To do this - right click on desktop, go to bottom and select 'Properties', Settings tab, Advanced button, select the Intel Graphics Media....tab, check box is at the bottom/left.
By doing this you can then click on the tray icon and go up to 'Schemes' and select your scheme and Windows will automatically switch to the configuration you created.
    I hope this helps,
    Kevin

  • External monitor showing black screen

I just got an LG external monitor with DVI cable and the mini-DVI to DVI adapter. When I plug it in, my MacBook sees the display but nothing shows up on the display. Any ideas as to what the issue might be? Could it be the port on my MacBook? This is the second display I've tried and am having the same issue, so I'm thinking it's my computer. Help!!!

I have been having similar problems with an LG monitor too but it is resolution dependent. Could there be some issue with LG monitors and Macs? I could go the VGA route too but isn't that inferior picture quality?

  • Thinkpad T60p with Win XP - Lost color on external monitor (only black & white)

Hi, I have a ThinkPad T60P, and a couple of weeks ago, I lost color on my external monitor (connected by VGA cable)
I have done a lot of testing, and found a couple of strange things around this:
    *  when using docking station with two monitors, only monitor nr "1" inCatalyst Control Center shows colors, but not "2".
    * When using external monitor (or projector) I don't get color
    * When showing video on the external monitor, color works(!) This is only on some type of videos, I think. Flash videos (ie. YouTube does not show colors)
    * When getting a bluescreen, the external monitor displays bluescreen with colors. When rebooting after bluescreen, colors were working while booting (windows logo with colors), but as soon as XP was up, colors were gone(!)
    * I have tried updating to the latest graphics driver (79d533ww.exe), and all the settings in Catalyst Control Center /  Control Panel
As a result of these findings, I beleive it must be a software problem, but since upgrading the drivers didn't work, I don't know what to try next.
I see also that there are other people experiencing the same problems, but I can't find any solution to this problem.

Cats seem to have a strong affinity for that display mode — remarkably often we hear that they've typed in the correct keystroke combo for it, and yet they never seem to set it back to normal after using the computer. Not very considerate, but you know cats: consideration isn't part of the package.

I just bought a new external monitor (ASUS), and it have DVI and VGA plugs. I bought the DVI adapter to connect with my macbook pro laptop. But the external monitor remain black… so I turn it off then turn it back on, it said "No VGA signal". Does it means I have to use VGA adapter instead? I am not sure how it work, I am very new to it… I hope you can help me out!

  • Betreff: T440s - Only 1024x768 on external monitor (DVI, Ultra Dock, Win8.1/Win7)

EDIT NOTE: This message was moved to the top of the thread in order to assist us with an escalation. For all future post and commments please continue posting in this thread.
One more victim here.  T440s (fully patched, UltraDock, lid closed, external TrackPoint keyboard), Win8.1 (fully patched), HDMI, Acer T232HL touchscreen monitor.
Volcomtx85's posting (over 50% failure rate in a corporate setting) should warrant some attention.
Since there is a mix of Win7, Win8 and Win8.1 in the thread (presumably with different drivers), and different modes of monitor connectivity, the two points of commonality in the reports would seem to be BIOS and motherboard hardware.  If so, let's hope it's the BIOS.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello,
I have a T440s sitting in the Ultra Dock and a Samsung 2343bw hooked up by DVI.
On both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 I can only set the resolution of the external screen to 1024x768. When I select  a higher resolution, both internal and external monitor go black for a couple of seconds and when the desktop comes back it's still 1024x768 on the external monitor. I tried the following three drivers:
    1) Deinstall display driver manually and let Win 8.1 pick a driver automatically, version 10.18.10.3318 (03-Oct-2013) gets installed. With this driver, both displays can be set to their native resolution. Unfortunately, the external display goes black once in a while and switches back on after 3 sec. The monitor itself is unlikely to be faulty, since it works well on my T400(+Dock).
    2) Install driver from Lenovo driver matrix, you'll get 10.18.10.3282. With this driver, the external monitor only displays 1024x768 as described above.
    3) Get the driver for HD 4400 from Intel website. It doesn't install voluntarily, but there is a workaround: http://www.intel.com/support/graphic...hd+4400+driver
I tried it and only get 1024x768 on the external display, just as with driver (2). If I connect the monitor by VGA, I get the blinking-error described in (1).
Hence, the external monitor is not usable, what is highly unsatisfying.
Can anyone confirm the Issue/problem? Is there a solution?
    thanks,
    niclas
    PS:
    - Bios of T440s is updated
    - I installed the monitor driver from Samsung
    - (1) is not an option in Win 7, only on Win8.1, since Win 7 doesn't find any driver for this card
    - I am happy to provide further information when needed
    - Edit: The screen works finde (DVI&VGA) on my T400 with dock.
    - Edit: If I connect the screen via VGA, no

  • T440 external monitor turns off

I have two T440s that will turn off the external monitor(s) while you are using them. The 440 is docked and using a 22" external monitor, mopuse and keyboard. I installed Windows 7 ENT and used the lenovo TVSU to update all the drivers and the power management. You can be sitting there working alond and suddenly the external monitor goes black. If you move the mouse to laptop LCD and change the refresh rate, it will turn the external monitor back on. Nothing else seems to make it come back on. I have another T440 that works fine in the same dock. the only difference is that the one that works correctly, still has the original Lenovo image on it. No drivers are missing. Any ideas what I need to install or update to get this working correctly?

If it is a permanent solution, than great job, but doing it on over 10 000 laptops it is not practical solution.
Fortunately there was patch released for solving this problem of hardware compatibility bettwen laptop and docking station.
    http://speedy.sh/dRhJw/fwdphb01.exe
To make it work laptop must be in docking station before running this softwate.
Hope this will help anyone who still have this problem.

  • SNOW LEOPARD - macbook pro with external monitor

My external monitor (Formac DVI) is giving me problems since snow leopard - if I start up and close the lid the external monitor goes black with thin grey lines. I have to keep the lid of the laptop open until start up is complete and the desktop appears on both monitors, then close the lid, let the comp go to sleep then wake with my bluetooth keyboard that's very annoying.
What are the chances this issue will be fixed soon?? I may go back to Leopard for a bit.....

I found the solution to this problem on another website, tried it and it worked!!!
10.6: Re-enable LCD font smoothing for some monitors
Mon, Aug 31 2009 at 7:30AM PDT • Submitted by astrosmash
There is a bug in Snow Leopard that disables LCD (sub-pixel) font smoothing on many third party LCD displays, including models from Dell, Samsung, LG, HP, EIZO, and Lenovo. Here are the details:
Snow Leopard introduces simplified Font Smoothing options under the Appearance pane in System Preferences. Prior to Snow Leopard, the available options were:
Automatic - Best for Main Display
    Standard - Best for CRT
    Light
Medium - Best for Flat Panel
    Strong
In Snow Leopard, you can only choose between Automatic and Standard CRT. Since few people use CRTs these days, most users now have only one option: Automatic. The problem with the Automatic option is that OS X incorrectly detects many third party LCD monitors as CRTs, and consequently, disables LCD font smoothing.
You can force OS X to use LCD font smoothing on all displays with this Terminal command:
defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2
The number 2 here corresponds to Medium - Best for Flat Panel. You may also use 1 for light smoothing, and 3 for strong smoothing, as per the original OS X font smoothing options.

  • I've connected my external monitor (LG) to my new Macbook Pro 15" laptop, using the adaptor for VGA...the display now has a large black bar along the left side.  No adjustment on the monitor will fix it, no "options" on System Prefs either...any ideas?

I've just purchased a new Macbook Pro, and connected it ot my external monitor (24" LG HD) using an Apple VGA adaptor.  The only resolution that looks good is the 1920 x 1080, but the image does not entirely fill the screen.  There is a large black gap on the left side of the screen now.  It worked fine with my "last generation" Macbook Pro...no adjustment on the monitor will help, and cannot find any System Setting in displays such as "options" or widescreen setting.  I've gone to the LG site, but no "Mac" related tech support issues come up...no forum here seems to deal with this particular issue either...any ideas?

I have the same thing but with a 23 inch HP, worked fine with my MBP 13 from 2009 but the 2011 2.4 i5 does the exact same thing as yours!
Very confused and hoping that some one else can help.
