External monitor randomly loses signal

Hello,
I have a external monitor connected via a DVI-D/Mini Displayport cable, and maybe once or twice a week the monitor will all of a sudden lose signal. The only way to regain the signal to the monitor is to unplug the cable from my MacbookPro.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Is there any recommended solution? Is it a faulty DVI-D/Mini Displayport cable I am using?
Macbook Pro - Late 2009
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:          2.53 GHz
OSX 10.6.7

Goobey - you have your monitor set up in extended mode. This gives you the effect of having an extended desktop. You can drag applications to the monitor and have multiple apps on screen at once.
If you prefer to have the same screen display on both monitors then you must select mirror mode. This can be selected in System Preferences - Displays.
If you would prefer to use your external monitor along with an external keyboard you can then run in closed clamshell mode. You would have to attach an external keyboard, mouse and your monitor. Then you close the lid to your MB allowing it to go to sleep. Once it is asleep, you can wake it to the external monitor by pushing the shift key on the external keyboard. This will wake the MB to the external monitor/keyboard/mouse. There is one caveat to this mode. You must be connected to power to run in closed clamshell mode.
Hope this solves your question!

I could be *very* wrong but did not know you could output from HDMI into displayport consistently with no issues.
Try a mDP to DP cable like this (the mDP end will go directly into the thunderbolt port of your laptop)

    Hi Walter,
I'm not sure this'll fix your problem, & it's info from earlier OSX versions, but I'll toss it out...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
    Trash these files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost /com.apple.windowserver.<12digitHex#>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.<12digitHex#>. plist
There may be more than one of each of the above, then trash...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Reboot
You could test it by first, depending on OS version...
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

  • External monitor reporting no signal despite detection in xrandr

I've installed Arch and xfce4 on my Macbook Pro retina 10,1 (2012). I'm trying to set it up with my Asus PB278Q external monitor.
When I run xrandr, I get this output:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 4800 x 1800, maximum 16384 x 16384

DP-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
So the external monitor is being detected by HDMI-0, but my external monitor is reporting no signal (and yes input is set to HDMI on the monitor). Also strange that xrandr is reporting it as 1080p but it's actually 1440p.
The wiki on multihead tells me to use the xrandr command along these lines:
    xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --right-of DP-2
And this does move the external screen around, as in my mouse can move off my laptop screen where I've positioned the external screen, but there's no signal.
My graphics card is GeForce GT 650M; I have the nvidia package installed. I tried looking this up, but I couldn't find anyone talking about the monitor being detected in xrandr but there being no signal back to the monitor. Also in the xfce display settings, it has grayed out the option to mirror the displays, not sure if it's that indicative of whatever I'm missing.

I have some new information. I tested it on a Viewsonic 1080p monitor I had with a VGA-to-Thunderbolt adapter. This worked perfectly straight away. So I tried the same connection for the Asus monitor and it too worked perfectly.
So I know I'm lacking something with HDMI. I'd still like to solve this because the VGA connection is capping my resolution at 1080p.

Am I missing some sort of HDMI compatible controller for my graphics card? I installed the nvidia package as the wiki tells me to do, and I'm not sure what else is needed.

  • External monitor says no signal and retina display is not working

my retina display stopped working, then i got an external monitor to view my desktop. I then set my laptop back to its factory settings. but now i can't view anything no matter how many monitors I try. I tried the dvi the hdmi and nothing.

    Have you tried

    2.connecting power
    3. connecting external monitor; waiting for it to 'wake up';

  • External monitor loses signal to macbook pro through DVI cable and Mini DisplayPort Adapter

    Hello,
So I had my external monitor connected to my MBP with a DVI cable and a Mini DisplayPort Adapter, for a while already. But sometimes, the monitor would lose signal from the laptop and gives me a white noise screen. Now, the monitor can't receive signal at all, even after I got a new Mini Displayport Adapter. When the monitor and the MBP is connected by the cable and the adapter, the monitor would say "no signal" and the MBP screen would flicker (I think it's trying to connect to the monitor, but can't). The new Mini Display Port Adapter also makes the screen flicker, so I'm not sure if it's the problem is at the adapter or the DVI cable. I'm pretty sure it's not the monitor.
What do you think? Have you ever have a screen flickering problem when your MBP is connected to an external monitor?

I have had the same problem.  By following your suggestions I got to arrangements.  I could not send them off to the side.  When I hit the mirro disply key everyting worked.  I got it solved by clicking in arrangements and setting displays to mirror display.
I am still have a problem of no sound coming through my tv.

  • IMAC als externer Monitor

    Hi,
i will use my iMAC 27'' (Model: Middle 2011) as an external monitor.
The signal should come from an Laptop Dell Latitude E6230 over an "HDMI to thunderbold"  cable.
The cable is from my apple shop and named "Mini displayPort HDMI Cable".
After reading many different articel to TDM mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924?viewlocale=de_DE ) I'am not sure that this will work properly.
    Current I have no success.
Thanks in advance for your support.
    Greetings Klaus

    Hello Klaus.
As the article points out, TDM works only Mac-to-Mac. Screen sharing could be possible for your situation. Requires software. This is for the Mac side:
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html
It can share a PC screen, but I don't know if similar software must be installed on the PC.,

  • GE70 2PE - Issue with an external monitor

    Hello there,
First of all I want to apologize for my english language, since Iam from non-English speaking country.
Few days ago I just got new MSI Laptot GE70-2PE series. Iam not so experienced with using a laptops at all, I was using a desktop pc whole time.
When I actualy tried to plug in my external monitor(via HDMI), nothin happened, not even a display flashed or anythin else and monitor just show that it got no signal. So I have tried almost everythin what I found on the internet and nothing work...
While I was trying to solve the problem I have disabled a driver for Intel HD graphic and then turned it back on(while I had still plugged monitor into laptop) and suddenly my external monitor get the signal and turned on. In my humble opinion something is wrong with driver for Intel HD graphic ?
If any1 could help me I would be really happy.
    Thanks

Kind of looks like it's a problem with the Intel Driver by the looks of that thread.....    I'm not sure there is much else we can do other than the workaround that you found and the ones posted in that thread.

  • Why does the external monitor on my MBPR constantly lose its signal?

I have a Macbook Pro Retina, manufactured in August of 2012 (mid 2012). The laptop seems to be incapable of continuously driving an external display. On some monitors it will lose the signal once or twice a day; on my home monitor it will lose the signal many times an hour, sometimes taking minutes to "settle down". The effect is as if I had un-plugged and re-plugged in the HDMI cable. However I see this happen on three different monitors, two of which come in through HDMI and one through Thunderbolt. I even bought an apple monitor for $1000 that I returned, because on that one every now and then the MBPR just wouldn't detect it at all (and I would still see it quickly drop and re-establish the signal a few times an hour).
Here is a video of what that looks like, as it flashes to blue repeatedly: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19671563/IMG_1363.MOV
I tried gfxCardStatus and using Discreet Only, no luck.
The apple store guys were no help. They claim they have never heard of this issue even though I repro it *daily*. When I check the Console, this is the first message I always see during an incident (for the worst-performing monitor, at least):
8/24/13 4:30:01.312 PM WindowServer[82]: Received display connect changed for display 0x3f003d
I have tried every conceivable Display setting (Best for Retina display, Best for External display), and I am mirroring. I never had even a single problem on my older Macbook Pro; I have had problems since day 1 on my MBPR and they are getting worse (i.e., the external monitor is losing its signal more frequently every day).
Can anyone recommend a solution or suggest a cause?
    Thanks,
    -Eric

I have the same problem with my MacBook Retina 13... my LG monitor loose signal. Please help!

  • External monitor "No Signal" message

MacBookPro mid 2010 with 250GB solid state drive. W80183G9AGZ
Two problems, they may be related
Randomly for some time the computer restarts with the message “Your computer has restarted because of a problem”
This generates a crash report which I always send to Apple.
(Unfortunately this computer does not support Apple Hardware Test nor Apple Diagnostics).
Today the computer will not send a signal to the external monitor, ( a Samsung TV).
I have carried out the following fault finding.
DVI-HDMI cable plugged and unplugged several times in different order before and after -
    Restart
    Shutdown and then Restart
    Reset PRAM
    Reset SMC
The same when using a VGA cable.
With HDMI there is a “No Signal” message, with VGA the screen just stays black.
Both HDMI and VGA previously worked flawlessly.
Checked that the GPUs are switching correctly from the integrated Intel HD graphics to the NVIDEA GForce 330M. Previously, as soon as this happened, the external monitor desktop image would appear immediately.
The presence of the external monitor is not being sensed, in “Displays” in System preferences no second display options are present.
    Questions
Is the video problem definitely the NVIDEA GPU or could it be the computer crashing problem just getting worse?
Is it possible to replace the NVIDEA GPU if it is faulty?
Although the problem seems to be the same with both HDMI and VGA could it still be a problem with the HDMI cable?

  • Mini Displayport to vga adapter on MacBook pro 13" late 2011. No signal on external monitor

    Hi
Connecting a Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" to an external monitor, trough mini Dispalyport to vga adapter, i see "no signal" messagge on external monitor, even if i get it as secondary monitor on Preferences > Monitor of my MacBook it's visible (i can change resolution, position, clone screen, ecc.).
Any suggestion? somebody found the same problem?

    Hi
i did what you said and tried with other resolution/refresh rate combinations, also with anoter external monitor (and vga cable) but its still the same: monitor is detected but there's no signal.
Now I will try to chek if the adapter works on other pc and monitor.
    Thanks

How do i run an external monitor with my macbook and change settings so that when i close the lid the signal to the monitor is not lost and i can continue using the mac with a mouse and a wireless keyboard?

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

  • How do I get a video signal to an external monitor via the mini-display port on my Mac Book Air?

I can't get a video signal out through my mini-display port on my Mac Book Air (version 1).  Thus I can't feed BBC iPlayer to an external monitor.  There is some connectivity - the MAC wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible and sound is transferred.  Is it likely to be a cable connection problem (though the cable works with a Windows operating laptop)?

First, what you said is contradictory. You say "can't get a video signal", then say"the Mac wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible". "No video signal" means an absolutely black, blank screen. It sounds like you have plenty of signal.
I am supposing what you are seeing is actually a blank desktop, which is to be expected if your settings are such that you are extending the desktop, instead of mirroring it.
Within the preference panes is a setting that allows you to change this. Open System Preferences, click Displays, and then click Arrangement. You will see that you are extending the desktop. Change that setting.
