External monitor recognized but blank

Trying to hook my Dell U2410 up as the main monitor. It sees it just fine and I can mess wit the settings, but the screen is blank. It does this in OSX and Win7 on the bootcamp side.
I'm running out of the display port to dvi.
I know the monitor is good as it is my primary desktop display.
Any ideas?

In the external monitor preference panel have you set it to NTSC at 60Hz ?
If you switch back and forth between Mirror and Extended Desktop does it flash at all ?

The both screens always worked fine but now the power book doesn't show anything on the screen.  I didn't drop it or even move it.  Where is the brightness button?  Could I have hit it by mistake?
Thanks so much for your help.
F2 is the up-brightness button, F1 is the down-brightness button, usually, on PowerBooks.  If for some reason the F1 button got held down for a couple of seconds, the display would go completely dark.
That being said, if the backlight does not come up (easily determined by seeing if the Apple outline on the cover is lit up) then the most likely suspect would be the inverter board, or the connection to the inverter board.  If this is a Titanium PG G4, the inverter board is easy and relatively inexpensive to replace.  For the Aluminum models, I don't know if that is quite so true.

  • PB G4 1GHz - External Monitor flashing but eventually works

Something weird is going on with my Powerbook when I connect it to an external monitor.
When I plug in the monitor the Powerbook will detect the external display, but the external monitor will flash on and off, intermittently displaying the screen, but then cutting out.
With enough switching between mirrored and extended mode, the monitor will external will eventually work and the image will stay put. But if the computer goes to sleep, the whole thing happens again.
Is this just my video card acting up (no solution possible) or are there monitor 'drivers' out there?
    Thanks!

Check if the connections are loose or get a new cable.
Do you use DVI-D (Stable) or VGA (Don't know) or VGA w/VGA to DVI-D transformer(Unstable: I use it for connecting my TV to my PowerBook)

  • PB screen broken-using external monitor now-but can't see hardware test

Hi. I have a 15" PB (1.33GHz) that was recently dropped. The screen was decimated... unusable and can see maybe the far left 1" of the screen... the rest is 100% unusable. So currently I am using a 19" monitor. I was wondering a few things... Is it possible to somehow disable the screen in the computer? I removed it, but the PB nows thinks there are two VGA monitors hooked up (?)... so I put the screen back in and I just sleep it everytime I start up and wake it with an external mouse so I can set my resolution on my external 19" monitor. It's not a huge deal if there's no way to disable it so that I can just remove the thing and the powerbook can be my keyboard
Anyway, I also can not run the hardware test because the F7 key (to mirror) wont work with it. Anyone have an idea what I can do about this? Somehow force the G4 to recognize the external monitor in the hardware test mode?? I suspect some other problems with the G4... such as a bad ram slot (the lower one) - it doesn't recognize any ram sticks that I put in there. I've read that lots of others had this problem... and even though I have applecare, I suspect that Apple won't recognize this since it has been dropped.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I assume this is due to the fact that system detects your internal monitor as default one, and that is there where system sends main data. In order to force system send data to the external monitor, get a mouse and physical keyboard, close MB lid, and then press any key on the external keyboard.
when you get there, go to system preferences/display, and manually move the Apple upper bar to the external monitor, then choose mirror; ultimately, set optimal resolution.

  • External Monitor - detected but nothing showing

    Hello
I have recently bought a miniDisplayPort-to-VGA adaptor so I could set up an external monitor.
Whilst in Display settings the second monitor is being detected, I just have a black screen/no signal.
My MB Pro obviously thinks its there, as the mouse travels off the side of the screen to the extended desktop, its just that nothing is showing...
I have tried a lot of things like restarts, altering resolutions, tried another monitor, tried other cables - and nothing seems to let me have an external monitor running.
Is there something I am missing here?
    Thanks for any help

If two monitors have been tried and neither worked, that casts a lot of doubt on the adapter. Even though it is new, it could be defective. I recommend taking it back where it was purchased for an exchange.

  • External display recognized but not working?

So, I've got kind of a weird problem.
Whenever I connect my iMac (through the Thunderbolt port) to my 32" RCA HDTV via a displayport to HDMI adapter, it shows on my iMac that there is a display connected (TTE HDTV), but my TV isn't recognizing it. I have tested the port/TV using my Windows laptop with a (native) HDMI port and there have been no problems.
I would think it was the cord I bought, except that my iMac recognizes an external display. It doesn't seem to be the TV's fault, and I've tried every resolution setting.

Yeah I have been having the same problem. When I'm looking at the Display Settings, it comes up with Samsung 1080 when its connected, however the tv doesnt recognize it. And if i unplug the HDMI cable from the adapter, the Tv options go away. There must be some sort of TV setting maybe? I am also using a passive adapter.

  • Tecra M5 - External monitor detected but no picture

    Hello,
I've just purchased Tecra M5 to use it with my external NEC monitor. However, whichever setting I try I get no picture on that monitor. The LED on the monitor indicates that it gets signal from the laptop but the monitor stays pitch black. The monitor obviously works fine, I've just disconnected it from another laptop.
I tried all possible settings in the nVidia control panel but no success. I also changed "Power On Display" in BIOS to "LCD + Analog RGB" but no luck either.
I have BIOS v.3.70 and graphic adapter drivers v.7.15.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Mike
P.S. When I press Fn + F5 I have no options to choose from, unlike with other Fn + ... combinations. I don't know wheter there should be any but maybe it is worth mentioning.
Also when I select "Only use one display" from the nVidia control panel and select my NEC monitor from the list, the monitor lights up and the LED changes to green, but the display is still black. As I cannot accept the changes the output switches back to the laptop display after several seconds.

    Hi,
Thank you for a prompt reply and new ideas. I tried with Samsung monitor and used a different cable but the behaviour was similar - you could see the monitor reacting to changes (self-adjusting etc.) and there even were options to choose from when pressing Fn + F5 combination but the monitor remained either black (no signal) or blackish (sort of receiving signal).
I use Vista Business and I have that Value Added Package installed.

  • External monitor detected but no picture

I recently tried hooking up my 17 inch LCD gateway monitor to my 13 inch mac. My mac detects it and lists it under display properties however it does not actually have a picture on the monitor. The gateway just stays black or powers on and then goes black after saying no signal. I have a mini dvi to dvi adapter and then a dvi to vga adapter hooked up, which is then plugged into the monitor. My monitor has a dvi hookup along with the vga input but i unfortunately realized this after I bought the adapter. I figure if my mac sees it I should be able to get it working without buying another expensive cable.
    Can anyone help?

I had the exact same problem with my 50" LG TV. I'll be looking forward to a reply.

  • Powerbook G4 15" screen blank, can't connect to external monitor

    Hi,
I've had a 15" Powerbook G4 for about 2 years now, but about a year ago, I switched it on and the display was white. I could hear the startup chime, and everything seemed to be working fine underneath, but the screen was just white.
So, recently I took it to an Apple store and in the end, they told me that the LCD was broken and that they would have to replace it for the Powerbook to work properly. As this would cost over £400, which I can't afford, I just decided to try and use an external monitor with it, as they had done in the store to check it.
So, I bought a DVI-VGA adapter from eBay, received it this morning, and tried to connect the Powerbook to my CRT monitor using the adapter.
Basically, I plugged the VGA cable from the monitor into the adapter, and plugged that into the Powerbook.
However, the external monitor just stays blank, as if it isn't connected to the Powerbook.
Please, can you tell me if I'm doing anything wrong, and if not, suggest why it might not be working.
    Thanks,

hi i did this as posted by yan pb15 i had everything back internal and external monitor it is a wonderful trick!!!
    thanks yan pb15
This "last" solution worked for my PB15 osx 10.4.11 (somebody can help you; it is at your own risk!)
    1. set in Quartz Debug: a) Quartz 2D extreme disabled; b) Automatic Beam Synchronization
    2. turn off PB and unplug everything
    3. remove battery
    4. remove all memory modules (your 1GB RAM)
    5. plug AC power
    6. turn on PB ( beeps; white LED blinks)
    7. turn off PB
    8. reset PMU (my PB model: shiftctrl+altpower)
    9. turn off PB
    10. unplug AC power
    11. install all memory modules
    12. install battery
    13. plug AC power
    14. turn on PB and pray
    Good luck.

  • External vga, monitor recognized, still no display

    I have a L R60 9461-DXG, with Win7 (32bit) running very fine.
Now trying to use an external monitor (L171p) but nothing works.
While in boot and in combination with Fn+F7 the display doesn't come up (staying in power saving mode).
In Win7 the external connected monitor is recognized and displayed as a L171p, enabling the monitor is possible but again the display doesn't come up.
Is this a driver error or could there be a hardware malfunction?
Installing (Vista) Ati Mobility Radeon X1400 drivers from the L site didn't solve the problem.
    Please help.

Not necessarily, but the probability of receiving a solution from other members, who are also using a similar setup, is most likely better here.

  • FCP through to External monitor....Sound fine but video is still frames

    Hi everybody
In January of this year this problem was posted by Andy D.....
+No matter what combination of settings I choose I cannot get video to play on my HD monitor only a still of the last frame shows up. When I hit play the audio is loud and clear and then when I hit stop the final frame appears on the screen.+
I have this problem but only when the material in my FCP viewer, canvas or sequence is ProRes422 (I'd converted H264s to this before importing into project)! If the project is DV or H264 material that has been rendered by FCP, it plays on the external monitor fine but it seems if we start looking at the high end stuff like ProRes, back to sound but still picture.
I might add here that the path to my external Full HD monitor is through firewire to an ADVC100 converter and then composite cables to the input of the monitor. By the way the same thing happens with an SD monitor.
I haven't tried using my video camera as the link through to the monitor instead of the ADVC100. Would this make a difference? I'd be pretty happy if someone had a solution for this.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Peter L

Unless the camera is a DVCPRO HD camera...like the HPX-170...this won't work. Not via HDV or AVCHD. Playout isn't as simple as it was with DV. There are far cheaper capture cards...Decklink Intensity Pro, Matrox MXO2 mini...but you need a MacPro for those (or with the MXO2 MIni, a laptop with an Express34 slot). An iMac is severely limited in what it can do.
    Sorry.
    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • How to make Lenovo recognize external monitor as default at boot time?

    Hello,
I suspect this is a rather simple fundamental Windows operation procedure, but I am going bald - tearing my hair out - trying to get this to work!!  I use Windows XP on a Lenovo 3000 V100, with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver (Intel 945W chipset).  Whenever I plug into an external monitor, I always have to manually switch the display from the laptop to the external monitor.  Here's the sequence of what happens.
    1) connect external monitor & turn on laptop
    2) Lenovo banner appears on the external monitor
    3) Windows banner appears on the external monitor
    4) but then Windows GUI (log-on screen) switches back to laptop monitor.
    5) must use hot keys to toggle the display from laptop to external monitor.
    6) must then reselect resolution settings of the external monitor (none of previously saved settings were recognized!!!)
I must repeat these steps once I logged of my computer session; and reconnect with the external monitor later.  I would appreciate any help or suggestions.  Thank you.

I don't have an V100 to check the following but, if you go into BIOS (F1 at boot) there should hopefully be an entry in the Config > Display menu allowing you to select default boot display as VGA rather than intern.

  • T61 External Monitor Port Failure Question

I have a Lenovo T61 8897-cto (purchased 4/2008) with what I believe is a failing backlight.  In dim environments I can still see the screen.  I've  been temporarily using an external monitor, but the external monitor just went blank and I can't get it back, (the external monitor works fine with another laptop which I'm using now).  My question is, does this new fault point to a system board failure?   I suppose it could be a connector but I don't move the system often and not recently.  The only other things that comes to mind is that the battery is dying and only has 50% of its capacity left, (but I always run it with the AC cable plugged in).
I'm just wonder if it is worth putting any money into this laptop or to parts it out.  I've already ordered a replacement W510 which I should get in under 2 weeks. I was thinking about using the T61 as a backup or dedicated to Ubuntu, but I can buy a used one for under $600 so I don't want to dump $400 into to have it repaired.
Any suggestions/prior experience with failing LCD displays and external video port?

1400x1050 is the highest screen resolution, so I guess that is SXGA+ No, I've never spilled anything on the laptop. I'm running Windows Vista Pro latest Service Pack. I rebooted the system this morning and the external display was detected and used during the boot process. It started to work again under Windows. I'm starting to think that it was some sort of power saving mode that failed to re-initialize. The main laptop screen is still dim, but readable in a dark room. It does have a bit of a tint to it, which I've read is an indicator of a failing backlight. I've checked the warranty on the Lenovo website and they've indicated that it has expired.

  • 1680 x1050 external monitor on T500 does not work

Dear all, I have a T500 running XP professional and a Philips external monitor 220BW8plus, but when I set the screen resolution to the screen's native resolution my screen gets compressed with 2 black areas on the side. I've tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked. Now I'm forced to work at 1400 by 1050.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Cheers,
    Erik
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for that suggestion, but I've tried that and as soon as I apply that change, the screen gets compressed with big black bars on the side.
It doesn't matter if I switch to single display, dual clone, dual extended, without or with docking station. I've updated to the latest software drivers etc, etc.
Is it a problem of the T500 with this brand and type of screen (Philips 220BW8CS1/00)?
Even our IT department is not able to solve the problem. They suggest I'd buy a different screen
