External Monitor Setup Help

I was wondering if anyone knew a way that I could connect my laptop to another monitor, and then connect the laptop to my Macbook Pro, and use both the laptop's monitor, and the monitor it's connected to, as external monitors. I was also thinking I could possibly throw in my 2nd Gen iPod Touch and my iPad as even more visual space. This would be an amazing setup and a huge accomplishment for me, and I could amaze everyone I know when they come over. Just in case it's useful, the Macbook Pro is a (I think it's refurbished) 2007 version. If anyone needs more info about ANYTHING, I will gladly provide it.

Never mind. I posted this on another website and got a little bit of help from there, but I did most of it on my own. I'm using ScreenRecycler trial version (NEVER BUY IT, THERES NO POINT) to connect to my Macbook Pro to my laptop, iPad, or iPod touch, whichever I choose. I can only do one at a time and I didn't have to spend any money at all! I can also connect my laptop to my monitor or TV and add another screen into the play! The only downside is that the TV stays as Windows while the laptop is connected with my Mac, unless I drag the window to the TV and then the laptop stays as windows. It's almost like having 2 Macs and 1 PC! Thanks to anyone who even considered helping me.

    What have you bought?
What model Mac are you running?
What input sources are available on the display you are connecting it to?

  • [openbox] External monitor setup

    Hi guys,
I'm curious to know how you handle a second monitor. Coming from Gnome I was used to have some more comfort with that.
    How it should be
    1. I plug in the monitor and nothing happens automatically. Can this be done automatically?
    2. Anyway, not a problem, I can use arandr to activate the external monitor. But how can I for example map the second desktop of openbox to that screen? That is, the first desktop should be mapped to my laptop screen, the second to the external monitor.
    3. When I plug off the external monitor all previous settings should be restored, showing all my windows on only my laptop screen.
    Regards

orschiro wrote:1. The list of windows opened through ALT+TAB is only visible on the second screen. However I want it to have on my laptop screen.
You should be able to fix this with the "<monitor>" option in the "<placement>" section. If you want the ALT+TAB dialog on the active screen, use "<monitor>Active</monitor>". If you always want it on one particular screen, try a specific number. (If "<monitor>1</monitor>" does not work, try "<monitor>2</monitor>".)
orschiro wrote:2. I'm using adeskbar as a panel bar. Does anyone know how to restrict the size of the bar only to the left/laptop screen?
I'm not familiar with adeskbar, but it is certainly possible that adeskbar does not support multi-head setups.
orschiro wrote:3. Viewing flash video in fullscreen over the second monitor does not cover the whole screen but only the resolution of my native screen (1280x800 px). How can I run flash files in fullscreen (it's a monitor with ~1600 x... px) over the second screen?
    I found this and this.
Otherwise, I get this problem too. It seems like some people believe it's a problem with the player or flash itself rather than the window manager. (Think about it---the window manager isn't going to choose the resolution at which flash displays video.) I've simply resigned to live with it and watch full screen flash on the monitor that it shows correctly on.
Also, since you're using Openbox with multiple monitors, check out Openbox Multihead.

  • Dual external monitor setup?

I'd like to use dual external monitors, ideally also plus the laptop screen for a total of 3 monitors, with my new 5th gen 17" MBP. I hear that USB-to-DVI options out there due have very poor poor refresh rates and picture quality. I'd like to use the ViDock2 expresscard/34 setup, which is a full fledged external video card, http://www.villagetronic.com/vidock2/index.html, but I understand it only works with MBP gens 1-4. Anybody know any other multi-monitor solutions that work with gen 5, other than poor quality USB options? Anybody know why the ViDock2 doesn't work with the MBP 5th gen?

Check out the Matrox dual head and triple head units, marc.

My suspicion is that you will need the more expensive "DP" versions to operate effectively with the new model.

  • T43 w/ Port Rep II - Dual External Monitor Setup

    Hi,
I have a T43 with the ATI chipset.  I am running it in a dual monitor configuration with the laptop LCD and an external monitor connected to the docking station.  I would like to use 2 external monitors via the docking station's VGA and DVI connectors but I can't figure out how to get the system to switch from the laptop LCD to the DVI.  Is this possible?  If so, how do I do it?
    I'm running XP.

  • Multipule Monitor setup Help

I have a hp laptop with windows 7, and i want to set up 2 monitors to it and still have my laptop screen on. I do not know how to set it up and i want to have 3 monitors for gaming. help please.

    Dylan, welcome to the forum.
When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.
If you have enough video ports on the laptop, here is how you can connect two monitors to it:
How to Connect Two Monitors to a Laptop
     Step 1
Plug in the first monitor into the power outlet. Connect the VGA cable from the monitor to the VGA input on the laptop.
Step 2Power on the VGA monitor. Enter the system configuration preferences. On a PC, enter the system preferences by clicking the Start button, then "Control Panel" and "Display." On a Mac, enter by clicking the apple icon. Once in the display settings screen, click "Detect" to have the laptop find the first external monitor.
Step 3Power off the second monitor. Connect the monitor to the computer through an available HDMI port. Power on the monitor. Enter the display preferences panel and detect the second external monitor.
Step 4Connect the second monitor to a USB slot, if no HDMI slot is available. Repeat the process of entering the display preferences screen to detect the monitor.
Step 5Install an extra monitor PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) card into a free PCMCIA slot on your computer. Power off the monitor, connect to the card and turn the computer on again. Detect the external monitor through the display program.
Step 6Connect a dual monitor expansion box to a USB port on your laptop. Install any additional software as required by the manufacturer. Connect the two external monitors to the expansion box and turn on the power. Run through the device detection, if needed, to have your laptop locate the external displays.

  • X201 vs X201s and external monitor, please help

    Hello
I am about to order my first thinkpad and have 2 questions and would greatly appreciate your thoughts
I need a machine that is fast enough to handle huge data files quickly.
    1. Not sure whether to go for:
    X201 with i7-620M processor 2.66GHz, 8Gb RAM and 128Gb SSD
    or the slower but lighter
    X201s with i7-640LM processor 2.13GHz again with 8Gb RAM and 128Gb SSD
    2. When working at home and work i hope to connect to a ~24" monitor (1920 x 1080)
I have been informed by lenovo sales people today
    "the x201 will only support a maximum resolutionof 1280 x 800"
Is this the case, how will it effect my use of a large external monitor?
I do note that the x201s seems to support 1440 x 900 and would be happy to buy an ultra base for work and home if that helps?
Look forward to hearing from you
    cheers
    Dan

I had  the same concerns when trying to decide between the two models.
In the end I went with the X201  -with the i7-620M proc.
My reasoning is that, sure the performance difference between the two processors may not be that big, but I'm future-proofing the machine just a little bit more at only a marginal additional cost.
As for battery-life - my laptop spends most of the day plugged in, so the benefits of the lower voltage processor and lower power consumption wouldn't be that great.
I bike in to work every day with the laptop on my back, so weight and size were important issues for me.  The laptops are the same size.  With the 6 cell battery they're both 1.1" thick.  Only if you slap on the 4cell does the x201s become thinner.  The x201 does weigh about a quarter pound more when configured with the 6 cell. (3.1 lbs as opposed to 2.8 or so)  I was willing to make that tradeoff for better performance.
As for the video output - I haven't plugged the x201 into my home monitor: 24" , but its performing beautifully on my 20" office monitor @ 1680x1050.

  • Best External Sata Setup - HELP

Okay... I know there's already a lot of discussion around external SATA setups... My head is spinning. Just looking for some basic recommendations for people who have done this.
I'm looking for a case that will hold up to 4 drives... I will probably only use 2 at first, but want the ability to scale. What is the best sata case and controller card? Are some Cases/Controllers better than others?

  • I have a MacBook Pro Version 10.6.8 and would like to connect it to an external monitor. Help!

The external monitor is a 19-inch Dell E196FPb LCD Monitor, which has a female 15-pin VGA. What cord do I need to connect the two?

10.6.8 is the version of OS X, not the model of your Mac. If it has a minidisplayport connector (next to the USB connectors, about half the size), then this is what you want.

  • Monitor Setup Help

OK I have a decent budget for a Mac Pro setup and need help with the displays. The system will be used for video and photo editing. I'm torn between 3 23" displays and 2 30" displays. I really like the look and feel of that central display with flanking monitors. One of the things I will be doing is taking simultaneous video from 3 sources and pulling it together into one video. The final product will alternate between all three clips onscreen at once and transitions between the clips. If you had your druthers what would you choose?
    Thanks.
PS I'm looking to buy after the next rev of the MP processors and am looking at the NEC line or Cinema Display (if they upgrade with the new MP line as I don't like the refresh rates).

  • 2 external Monitor setup

    Hello all.
Is it possible to have (2) Apple Cinema monitors connected to the latest MacBook Pro at the same time using the new mini connection?
    -TIA

As you know, with multiple monitors, most gains in productivity result in using apps that allow you to have multiple windows open, so you can drag specific windows to different monitors. Logic, for example, does this nicely.
While you can use MainStage with two monitors, MainStage doesn't do much with multiple windows (other than those little keyboard windows, or channel strip plug-in/virtual instrument windows), and you can only have a single layout, setup, or perform window open at one time, so your choices are limited. It would be nice to be able to do a separate window for, say, lyrics, or separate keyboards, etc.

    Hi,
I have an Alesis DM5pro drum kit and was thinking about getting Logic Pro (or Express if it works) to use with it. Can someone tell me how to get the the drum kit to work with Logic? I'm a fish-out-of-water with this audio stuff. Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Would this external monitor setup work?

I have purchased this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152744) 23 inch samsung with a resolution of 2048x1152 and am waiting for it to arrive.
Will it work using the mini display port to DVI adapter at that resolution? Or will i have to purchase that stupid dual link (i hope not >.<)
Any ideas or help will be appreciated, thanks.

    Thankyou mate
Also, do you have any idea how it would look at 1920x1080?
Because i know that resolution looks good at 23" anyway, (think of the 23 inch ACD) but reckon itd look okay because its not the native res?
Many thanks for your previous answer.

  • External NTSC monitor setup

When I use an external NTSC monitor connected to an Apple DVI to video adaptor then to a Radeon 800XT video card I have many crashes. It seems like these are caused by the External monitor setup. I would to know what sort step up others are using for external video. And what kind of success you are having with them.
    Thanks
    Ken

I to have had the same problem, in fact, I just posted about it a few days ago. Hopefully Apple's monitoring this forum and looking at the issue. The only solution I've found is to disable the external preview, which is quite frustrating. Just a question have your crashed happened while you're working or when you perform application switching. I've only had problems when I apple-tab to another program and then do the same to get back into Motion.

  • Accessibility zoom unusable on multi-monitor setup

The accessibility zoom feature (ctrl-scoll when enabled) that always worked so well and fluidily in previous versions of OSX is now broken in Yosemite.
It works fine on my macbook pro retina's main display when there are no monitor connected, but on my usual dual external monitor setup the frame rate is so slow it makes is useless.
Does anyone have the same issue?

I just found a great workaround for the zoom and it works better than before.
The zoom defaults to fullscreen zoom and when you have multiple monitors it zooms all of them. Normally I don't need to zoom all just the one monitor that I'm working on.
Go to  "system preferences " ,"accessibility ", set zoom style to "picture in picture" and then click   "more options"  and then click "adjust size and location"  then you can set the zoom window to the size of a monitor. then when you zoom only the monitor you are on gets zoomed and is fast.
Works for me. Hopefully helps others as well.
