External monitor shuts on and off...

Ok so stick with me, this might be hard for me to explain. Keep in mind my mouse and keyboard are plugged in via USB, not wireless. My external monitor is a Dell 2405FPW.
When my new MacBook Pro 15" is plugged into a power source, the external monitor it is connected to works just fine. Now, I ALWAYS have my MacBook Pro itself closed (meaning the lid if closed). It can go to sleep and I move my mouse and the external monitor turns back on, and we're in business. Works just as it should.
Now, if my MacBook Pro is NOT plugged into a power source, the external monitor the computer is connected to will turn on for 5 seconds and then the computer will go to sleep. I'll move the mouse, the computer turns on, after 5 seconds, it goes back to sleep. Keep in mind my computer lid is closed. IF I HAVE MY COMPUTER LID OPEN, the external monitor works just fine. It just works as a dual monitor setup.
You'd think with the computer not plugged into a power source that having to run ONE monitor would be best instead of running two. Now, if I open the lid and have things running well for a bit, I'll try and shut the lid. The computer goes to sleep for a couple seconds, I move my mouse, the external monitor turns on. Then after 5 seconds the computer sleeps again.
Now, here's where it gets weirder. In those 5 seconds the external monitor is working, I go to restart the computer very quickly. Keep in mind, the computer is not plugged into a power source still. Once the compute restarts, the external monitor works just fine UNTIL THE COMPUTER GOES BACK TO SLEEP. Then the monitor won't turn on no matter what button I press on the keyboard or the mouse. I have to open the lid to get things running again. And if I shut the lid, the computer is only on for 5 seconds and then goes back to sleep.
I'm really confused. I don't know why when I restart the computer when it's not plugged into a power source the external monitor works fine on its own, but once the computer goes to sleep, you can't get things working again unless you open the computer's lid and use it as a dual monitor setup. When the computer is plugged into a power source, all is well.
Can someone help?

  • External monitor flashes on and off randomly after wake from sleep

I have a Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz hooked up to a Samsung SyncMaster 2033 External monitor via the MiniDisplayPort-DVI connector.
After waking from sleep, the external monitor will go blank for a fraction of a second at random intervals (display on the MBP remains normal). The flickering clusters are about minutes apart, while flickers within a cluster (usually 2-3 flickers per cluster) is of order seconds apart. "Detect displays" will not make this go away. The only way I can make it go back to normal is to unplug-and re-plug the MiniDisplayPort connector on the MBP.
Anyone else got a more elegant solution to this that does not involved wearing down the displayport?

I tried this.  No change.  However, I did start playing with the Display settings.  Oddly enough, when I change the disfunctioning monitor to 720p it starts working again.  Does this mean anything to anyone?

  • Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

  • My iPad air shuts on and off on it's own?

    Hello,
I have a iPad Air that has the latest software, everything is up to date. It was purchased in December. Past few weeks it will shut on and off on it's own. I've reset it a few times, did everything that is recommended. The black apple screen comes up as it's being powered on even if I did not hit the power button. Is there a certain reason it's doing this? What are my options to fix this?

    Hey there Hollie P.,
It sounds like your iPad is going to slee and turning on without you pressing the buttons. I would use this process to reset the phone first, if this is not the reset you mentioned:
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If it is, and the issue is persisting, I would next backup your iPad to your computer:

And restore it from your backup with this article and test the issue again:

my one year old iphone 5 shuts on and off at random moments(probably a tech fault) can i get a new one/ get this one fixed?
it just suddently happend, i plugged it into the computer (right after a norton security check) and suddently my phone just dies. and now it won't stop turning on and off constantly every 3minutes, i know it sound wierd but it is true. I have changed batteryes before(sort off the same problem) at a different time off the year. it was during winter last time i got these issues.

    Hi okgames,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know it can be both concerning and frustrating if your iPhone will not turn on or shuts off randomly. In your situation, I would suggest reading over the attached article and try the troubleshooting steps provided to ensure all steps have been completed before considering a hardware repair.

Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Satellite L300 29R - Monitor flickers on and off at start up - Vista

    Hi from Bxl,
after turning the computer on, when the desktop icons are already visible and the background photo as well, the monitor blinks on and off in black for about 1 second each time.
Then it stabilizes and things 'seem' to work normal.
But then again, I am no expert. Perhaps there are other problems.
I recently bought a new camera and it seems to me that the problem started after downloading the software.
In the meantime I deleted it again but this flickering at start up remains.
What should I do? Please if any solutions, explain to me as to a 'total beginner'.
Thanks so much for your help in advance!
    Iris

It is not easy to say why this happen.
For me it looks like some component will be loaded in the background and it has something to do with graphic.
We can obviously just speculate why this happen but at the end you must check preinstalled stuff and running background processes to see what the problem can be. What you can try is to install latest display driver offered on Toshiba support page.
At least, if everything works well leave it.

  • External monitor shuts down laptop

    Hey All,
I've got a weird problem that just came up. I've got a 17" external Apple flat screen monitor that I got off of eBay about 4 months ago. I bought the Apple DVI to ACD display adaptor and have been using the external as a second screen when I'm editing video and authoring DVDs. Everything was great until two nights ago when I plugged it in and all of a sudden it caused my laptop to shut down almost immediately after I connected it to my PowerBook (17" - about 1 year old). I checked it on my older 15" PowerBook and the same thing - shuts down right after plugging it in. I finally checked it on my even older G4 desk top and there were no problems - stayed on and didn't shut down. I've tried just about every variable - plug it in when I boot, plug it in after it's warmed up, charger plugged in - not plugged in, you name it, all of a sudden after 4 months it just stopped working with my laptops. Any suggestions would be grateful as I do alot of editing and the external monitor has made my life much easier because of the added real estate. Thanks in advance-
    17 Powerbook & G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

either you could try different adapter with your monitor - if it does not work, it's the display.
or you could take laptop and adapter to the store and ask them to connect it to different monitor - if it works like that, adapter is probably ok.

  • External Display flashes on and off will not stay on.

When I turn on my Samsung external LCD display which is connected to the iMac, it flickers on and off and will not stay on. What could cause this problem. I tried different resolution settings to no effect. I had been using the display without problems until recently. I wonder if it was a system software update.

Are you using some sort of adapter to hook it to the Mac? I know on my iMac that I use an external monitor on I use a mini DVI to VGA connector. If you are using something like that it could be the adaptor.
I would think if it was software there would be more posts on it. Yours is the only one I have read on this subject.

  • Monitor cycles on and off many times before settling and staying on

When I turn my mac mini on or revive it from sleep, the monitor wakes up for a short time, then goes black for 30 seconds then revives itself for about 23 seconds in a cycle (on, off, on, off) that lasts about 30 minutes, maybe longer.  After which, the monitor stays on indefinitely.
...until the computer goes back to sleep or is turned off...  then the whole cycle starts over.
I do not have to touch anything for the cycles to happen.
The computer is running fine, in fact I can continue to type... I just cant see what I am doing.
This problem is a recent development and was not triggered by anything I am aware of.
After 6-8 times of going through this, I have not yet noticed any change in duration of cycles or of the length of time before it settles out.
    I have a Mac Mini (Mid 2011)
External DELL monitor connected via Thunderbolt port mini display port to VGA.
I have tried reseting the SMC and PRAM with no correction to the problem.

    Hello slodave,
Since you are not hearing the hard drives or anything kick on for a while it sounds like the issue may be with your power supply.
You may want to look at the power supply there should be a light on it. See if it shows it is starting properly before the computer actually turns on (so this is during the 6+ times it is turning on and off).
If the power supply is going then you may just need to replace it to continue normal operation.

  • My external monitor flickers intermittently and wont function when connected to macbook pro

    Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a cable to convert the thunderbolt/miniport to the VGA input on an external monitor I have had laying around for a few years. I am currently running osx 10.7.5 on a macbook pro.
When I plugged the cable to connect my macbook to the monitor, the monitor certainly recognized the cable, but the display would not do more than flicker in and out intermittently when connected to my macbook.
I have searched the forums for a solution to this, but haven't been able to find one that works. I tried resetting the SMC and restarting while holding cmd+P+R but none of these "fixes" seemed to help.

Simplest thing to try is a PRAM reset.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Using External Monitor as display, and laptop for keyboard and track pad

    Hi,
I have an aluminum Powerboook that is about two years old and I have it attached to a Samsung Syncmaster 203B external monitor. I have been looking for a set of instructions so that I can set the displays (I have been scouting around the preferences window and display options) to have the highest quality. At the present the words on my external monitor are a little fuzzy and I bet could be improved. Also, I've got the monitor and the computer set to be mirrored, but I really don't need the laptop window to be active. I'm just using it for it's keyboard and trackpad and it's sitting on my lap.
    Thanks so much,
    Rob Collins

Turn off mirroring if you don't need it. Set each display to it's native resolution. Your Powerbook is likely 1280x854, your Samsung is 1400x1050. Use the DVI interface.
Personally, I just dim my laptop when using the external display, although technically it's still active. Confuses the heck outta me sometimes when an app throws a window onto the laptop.

  • Connect laptop to a external monitor with laptop screen off

I need to connect my laptop to an external monitor but i need my laptop screen off.
Is it possible? I use an hdmi or vga connection, gnome as DE and ati 5700 graphic card

    mm...
    try on a terminal "xrandr"
first type xrandr to know the name of the two displays... then
xrandr --output laptopdisplayname --off --output monitorname --preferred
That will turn of the laptop display and turn on the monitor....
But I don't know if that command runs on gnome..  if it runs try to download "arandr" gui app of xrandr from yaourt

  • External Video flickering on and off

About a week ago, the external video from FCP to my firewire deck began to turn off and on and I would play through a timeline. All on it's own. First I changed out the firewire cable thinking I had a short in it. The problem still persists. I also tried deleting preference files and such with no affect.
Basically as I play through a timeline - doesn't matter what video format (8bit, DVCPro HD, DV/NTSC) and about every 5-10 seconds the external video will flicker and turn off - then sometimes come back on.
Anyone know if this is an FCP issue, Firewire issue, or Video Card issue?

So you have firewire out of your computer into a deck and then from the deck into a monitor?
I would start at the cables connected to the monitor and then work my way back to the computer.
Does the video cut in and out when you play a tape back from the deck without the computer involved?
Does the deck record ths intermitant signal (maybe some sort of record inhibit?)
Does it playback OK in FCP when external video is turned off and no deck connected?
